Seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in household domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) in Spain, 2019-2023

SARS-CoV-2 is the causal agent of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in humans that emerged in late 2019. This virus is able to infect humans and different animal species. Among pets, cats and ferrets are more susceptible to be infected by the SARS-CoV-2. Epidemiological studies are an important tool to provide information under natural conditions of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 virus. In comparison to cats, limited epidemiological studies have been performed in domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) reporting the presence of antibodies in this species. This study analysed the presence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in 432 cliend-owned ferrets from different geographical areas of Spain during the different waves of COVID-19 outbreaks from December 2019 to May 2023 (42 months). For this purpose, anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were detected by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent method (ELISA) using the receptor binding domain (RBD) of Spike antigen and confirmed by serum virus neutralization assay. Eighteen of the 432 ferrets included were seroreactive by the in-house ELISA (4.17%, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 2.65-6.49). In this sense, the wave of COVID-19 with the higher number of seropositive ferrets occurred during the seventh wave when the different Omicron subvariants were the dominant virus variants. Our results suggest that the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission in domestic ferrets in natural conditions is low. Further research is need to evaluate the potential risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from human to pets.

Use of chin sling for conservative treatment of mandibular fracture in a guinea pig (Cavia porcellus)

OBJECTIVE

To describe a treatment for a mandibular fracture in a guinea pig (Cavia porcellus).

ANIMAL

A 6-month-old sexually intact male guinea pig referred for a 24-hour history of hyporexia.

CLINICAL PRESENTATION, PROGRESSION, AND PROCEDURES

Physical examination showed lateral displacement of the incisors and inflammation and crepitation during mandible lateralization. Imaging tests revealed a minimally displaced complete oblique fracture of the left mandible with fracture of the left mandibular first premolar tooth and incisor tooth.

TREATMENT AND OUTCOME

Conservative treatment was established by placing a chin sling (CS) to immobilize the jaw and a nasogastric tube for nutritional support. Imaging tests repeated 3 weeks later showed initial callus formation, and the conservative treatment was discontinued. Follow-up examinations showed appetite and progressive weight gain. Five months later, the clinical crown of the left mandibular incisor was absent and a resorptive lesion on the left mandibular first premolar tooth was detected. Complete ossification of the fracture without premolar and moler teeth elongation was observed on control imaging tests. Ten months after initial examination, the patient was reportedly healthy with no signs of pain or dental disease.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Jaw fracture treatments in guinea pigs are poorly described in the literature. Surgical treatment can be challenging in this species due to its skull and dental anatomy. Although CS was originally employed to increase the congruency of premolar and molar teeth after coronal reduction, this device yielded satisfactory results as a noninvasive, inexpensive treatment of a mandibular fracture in this guinea pig. Alopecia on the back of the head was the only undesired adverse effect associated with the CS.

The use of endoscopy-assisted nephrolithotomy for unilateral nephrolith removal in a rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)

A 3-year-old spayed female rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was referred with mineralizations in the left kidney. Despite medical management, 8 months after the initial examination, a 5.3-mm obstructive nephrolith with dilatation of the renal diverticuli was observed with abdominal ultrasonography. Surgical removal by endoscopy-assisted nephrolithotomy was completed. A flexible endoscope was introduced into the renal pelvis through a puncture incision in the lateral aspect of the kidney. The nephrolith was removed with endoscopic grasping forceps through the same orifice and the renal pelvis and diverticula were flushed to extract the smaller mineralized particles. The nephrotomy site was closed and the kidney was sutured to the abdominal wall. The rabbit recovered uneventfully. Six months after surgery, a non-obstructive stone was identified; however, 2 years later the rabbit remains asymptomatic. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report on the use of endoscopy-assisted nephrolithotomy to extract a complicated nephrolith in a rabbit.

Computed Tomography-Guided Fine Needle Biopsies of Vertebral and Paravertebral Lesions in Small Animals

Fine needle biopsy (FNB) is an effective, minimally invasive and inexpensive diagnostic technique. Under computed tomography (CT)-guidance, lesions that have a difficult approach can be sampled to reach a diagnosis. The aim of this study is to describe the use of CT-guidance to obtain FNB from vertebral and paravertebral lesions in small animals. Ten dogs and one ferret that had undergone CT-guided FNB of vertebral and paravertebral lesions and had a cytological or a histological diagnosis were included in this retrospective study. The FNB samples were taken in four cases from the vertebra, in two cases from the intervertebral disc and in five cases from the intervertebral foramen. Two infectious and nine neoplastic lesions were diagnosed. The percentage of successful FNB was 91%. The percentage of samples with a cytological diagnosis was 80%. The percentage of complications was 9%. Limitations were the small number of animals in the study, the lacking complementary percutaneous biopsies for comparison, the lacking final histological diagnoses in some cases and the intervention of multiple operators. Computed tomography-guided FNB is a useful and safe technique for the diagnosis of vertebral and paravertebral lesions in small animals. However, a degree of expertise is important.

Environmental comparison of indoor floor coverings

Appropriate selection of construction materials plays a major role in a building's sustainable profile. The study sets out a comparative life cycle assessment of indoor flooring systems of different nature. The flooring systems consisted of coverings and, where required, bonding material and/or impact soundproofing material. The following coverings were assessed: inorganic (natural stone and ceramic tiles), polymer (carpeting and PVC), and wood-based (laminate and parquet) coverings. The life cycle assessment scope was defined cradle to cradle, i.e. product stage, transport to the construction site, installation of all construction elements, use, and valorisation by recycling, as end-of-life transition scenario towards a circular economy. In the use stage, three scenarios were defined as a function of pedestrian traffic intensity, which determined maintenance, repair, and replacement operations and frequencies. The environmental impacts of the coverings product stage were taken from previously assessed and selected Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), as these are standardised public documents devised to provide environmental life cycle information. The method adopted in the study suggests that, though the use of EPDs as information source is interesting, erroneous conclusions may be drawn if the EPDs are not comparable and/or if the comparison is not made in the building context. The results indicate that the flooring systems with inorganic coverings performed best in the global warming, acidification, eutrophication, photochemical ozone creation, and abiotic depletion for fossil resources impact categories, whereas laminates performed best in the abiotic depletion for non-fossil resources and ozone layer depletion impact categories. The carpet flooring system performed worst in every impact category except photochemical ozone creation potential.
