Abstract
UNLABELLED A novel nano-packing material with lower relative humidity, oxygen transmission rate and high longitudinal strength was synthesized by blending polyethylene with nano-powder (nano-Ag, kaolin, anatase TiO(2), rutile TiO(2)), and its effect on preservation quality of strawberry fruits (Fragaria ananassa Duch. cv Fengxiang) was investigated during storage at 4 degrees C. Results showed that nano-packaging was able to maintain the sensory, physicochemical, and physiological quality of strawberry fruits at a higher level compared with the normal packing (polyethylene bags). After a 12-d storage, decreases in the contents of total soluble solids, titratable acidity, and ascorbic acid of nano-packing were significantly inhibited. Meanwhile, decay rate, anthocyanin, and malondialdehyde contents were decreased to 16.7%, 26.3 mg/100g, 66.3 micromol/g for nano-packing and 26.8%, 31.9 mg/100g, 75.4 micromol/g for normal packing; polyphenoloxidase (PPO) and pyrogallol peroxidase (POD) activities were significantly lower in nano-packing than the control. These data indicated that the nano-packaging might provide an attractive alternative to improve preservation quality of the strawberry fruits during extended storage. PRACTICAL APPLICATION Nano-packing exhibited identified quality benefits applicable to the preservation of fresh strawberry. Furthermore, nano-packing has the advantages of simple processing and feasibility to be industrialized in contrast with other storages. Thus, the utilization of nano-packing will likely assist commercial producers and retailers in extending the shelf life of products over a broader range in the future.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the most effective hypoglycemic component of polysaccharides from Opuntia dillenii Haw. by preliminary screening and to specifically study the antidiabetic effects of O. dillenii polysaccharide (ODP)-Ia in mice with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes. Three kinds of ODPs - ODP-Ia, ODP-Ib, and ODP-II' - were isolated by using an ultrasonic extraction method and diethylaminoethyl (DEAE)-Sepharose fast-flow column chromatography. The mice were administered ODPs for 3 weeks. Gavage administration of ODP-Ia significantly decreased (P<0.05) their intake of food and water; the fasting levels of blood glucose (BG), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), plasma urea nitrogen (PUN), and malondialdehyde (MDA); and the activity of glucose-6-phosphatase (G-6-Pase). In contrast, it significantly increased (P<0.05) the body weights, hepatic glycogen (HG) levels, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, and the hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in diabetic mice. However, ODP-Ia did not significantly increase insulin levels in the mice with STZ-induced diabetes. We propose that ODP-Ia exerts its antihyperglycemic effect by protecting the liver from peroxidation damage and by maintaining tissue function, thereby improving the sensitivity and response of target cells in diabetic mice to insulin.

Abstract
Methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) is involved in the carcinogenesis and progression of multiple types of cancer. However, its precise role in gastric cancer (GC) and the relevant molecular mechanism remain unknown. In the present study, we found that miR-638 levels were lower in GC tissues and GC cell lines than in adjacent normal tissues and normal gastric epithelial cell lines, respectively. Low miR-638 levels were associated with poor tumor differentiation, tumor size and lymph node metastasis. MeCP2 expression levels were higher in GC tissues than in adjacent normal tissues. It was found that miR-638 inhibited GC cell proliferation, colony formation, G1–S transition and tumor growth, and induced cell apoptosis by directly targeting MeCP2. MeCP2 promoted GC cell proliferation, colony formation and G1–S cell-cycle transition, and suppressed apoptosis. Molecular mechanistic investigations were performed using an integrated approach with a combination of microarray analysis, chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing and a reporter gene assay. The results showed that MeCP2 bound to the methylated CpG islands of G-protein-coupled receptor kinase-interacting protein 1 (GIT1) promoter and upregulated its expression, thereby activating the MEK1/2–ERK1/2 signaling pathway and promoting GC cell proliferation. Taken together, our study demonstrates that MeCP2, a target of miR-638, facilitates GC cell proliferation and induces cell-cycle progression through activation of the MEK1/2–ERK1/2 signaling pathway by upregulating GIT1. The findings suggest that MeCP2 plays a significant role in GC progression, and may serve as a potential target for GC therapy.

Abstract
AIMS To carry out a meta-analysis on the relationship between smoking and p53 gene mutation in lung cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS PubMed, Web of Science, ProQest and Medline were searched by using the key words: 'lung cancer or lung neoplasm or lung carcinoma', 'p53 mutation' and 'smoking'. According to the selection criteria, 15 articles were identified and methodologically analysed by stata 12.0 software package. Crude odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals calculated using the fixed-effects model were used to assess the strength of association between smoking and p53 mutation in lung cancer. RESULTS In total, 15 articles with 1770 lung cancer patients were identified; 69.6% of the patients were smokers, 30.4% were non-smokers. Overall, smokers with lung cancer had a 2.70-fold (95% confidence interval 2.04-3.59) higher risk for mutation than the non-smokers with lung cancer. In subgroup analyses, the increased risk of p53 mutation in smokers than in non-smokers was found in the non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) group (odds ratio = 2.38, 95% confidence interval = 1.71-3.32) and in the NSCLC and SCLC group (odds ratio = 3.82, 95% confidence interval = 2.19-6.69). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis strongly suggests that p53 mutation is associated with smoking-induced lung cancer. Smokers with lung cancer had a higher risk for p53 mutation than non-smokers.

Abstract
In view of its role in tumor promotion and signal transduction, protein kinase C (PKC) has proven to be an exciting target for cancer therapy. With the aid of molecular modeling, we rationally designed and stereoselectively synthesized a new class of rigidified pyrrolidone-based PKC activators. Pyrrolidone 15 was found to exhibit reasonable affinity for PKCdelta, with lower affinity for the other isozymes tested. Pyrrolidone 2 causes the dose-dependent induction of apoptosis in LNCaP prostate cancer cells. This apoptotic effect could be markedly potentiated by the use of LNCaP cells overexpressing the PKCalpha or delta isozymes.

Abstract
Carboxyl-group functionalized mesoporous silica (CFMS) prepared by one-pot co-condensation method was employed for the solid phase extraction (SPE) of chromium species for the first time. A new approach of SPE coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was thus established for the speciation of chromium in environmental water samples. The influences of pH, volume of sample, extraction time, amount of adsorbent, elution conditions, co-existing ions and adsorption capacity were investigated on adsorption or elution of chromium species. Cr(VI) was not retained on the CFMS material in the pH range of 1.0-9.0, while Cr(III) was quantitatively adsorbed at pH 5.0-9.0. The captured Cr(III) was enriched by using 1.5 mol L-1 HNO3 as elution solvent and detected by ICP-MS. Under the optimized SPE conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity of the CFMS for Cr(III) was 57.67 mg g-1 and the enrichment factor was 25, with the detection limit (LOD) of 0.02 μg L-1. The proposed protocol has been successfully applied to chromium speciation in rain, lake and river water samples, which exhibited a prospect in field separation and enrichment of chromium species in environmental waters.

Abstract
Background MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play key roles in tumorigenesis and progression of gastric cancer (GC). miR-1269 has been reported to be upregulated in several cancers and plays a crucial role in carcinogenesis and cancer progression. However, the biological function of miR-1269 in human GC and its mechanism remain unclear and need to be further elucidated. Methods The expression of miR-1269 in GC tissues and cell lines was detected by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Target prediction programs (TargetScanHuman 7.2 and miRBase) and a dual-luciferase reporter assay were used to confirm that Ras-association domain family 9 (RASSF9) is a target gene of miR-1269. The expression of RASSF9 was measured by qRT-PCR and Western blotting in GC tissues. MTT and cell counting assays were used to explore the effect of miR-1269 on GC cell proliferation. The cell cycle and apoptosis were measured by flow cytometry. RASSF9 knockdown and overexpression were used to further verify the function of the target gene. Results We found that miR-1269 expression was upregulated in human GC tissues and cell lines. The overexpression of miR-1269 promoted GC cell proliferation and cell cycle G1-S transition and suppressed apoptosis. The inhibition of miR-1269 inhibited cell growth and G1-S transition and induced apoptosis. miR-1269 expression was inversely correlated with RASSF9 expression in GC tissues. RASSF9 was verified to be a direct target of miR-1269 by using a luciferase reporter assay. The overexpression of miR-1269 decreased RASSF9 expression at both the mRNA and protein levels, and the inhibition of miR-1269 increased RASSF9 expression. Importantly, silencing RASSF9 resulted in the same biological effects in GC cells as those induced by overexpression of miR-1269. Overexpression of RASSF9 reversed the effects of miR-1269 overexpression on GC cells. Both miR-1269 overexpression and RASSF9 silencing activated the AKT signaling pathway, which modulated cell cycle regulators (Cyclin D1 and CDK2). In contrast, inhibition of miR-1269 and RASSF9 overexpression inhibited the AKT signaling pathway. Moreover, miR-1269 and RASSF9 also regulated the Bax/Bcl-2 signaling pathway. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that miR-1269 promotes GC cell proliferation and cell cycle G1-S transition by activating the AKT signaling pathway and inhibiting cell apoptosis via regulation of the Bax/Bcl-2 signaling pathway by targeting RASSF9. Our findings indicate an oncogenic role of miR-1269 in GC pathogenesis and the potential use of miR-1269 in GC therapy.

Abstract
Background Gastric cancer is a common and highly lethal malignancy in the world, but its pathogenesis remains elusive. In this study, we focus on the biological functions of CDK-associated Cullin1 (CAC1), a novel gene of the cullin family, in gastric cancer, which may help us to further understand the origin of this malignancy. Methods The AGS and MGC803 gastric cancer cell lines and the GES-1 gastric mucosa cell line were selected for study. At first, CAC1 expressions of those cell lines were examined by quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blot examinations, then CAC1 small interfering RNA (CAC1-siRNA) were designed and transfected into the AGS cell line with a relatively high level of CAC1. Once CAC1 was silenced, a series of biological characteristics of AGS cells such as cell proliferation, cell cycle, apoptosis, and expressions of apoptosis-related genes (P53, BCL2 and BAX) were determined by MTT, flow cytometry, qRT-PCR and western blot, respectively. Results CAC1 expression of AGS or MGC803 was much higher than that of GES-1. After CAC1 expression was effectively depressed by RNA interference in AGS cells, significant cell growth inhibition occurred. Furthermore, the proportion of cells treated with CAC1-siRNA increased in the G1 phase and decreased in the S phase, indicative of G1 cell cycle arrest. More importantly, the proportions of early/late apoptosis in AGS cells were enhanced with cis-diaminedichloroplatinum (cisplatin, CDDP) treatment, but to a higher extent with cisplatin plus CAC1-siRNA. Interestingly, BCL2 mRNA copies showed about a 30% decrease in the cisplatin group, but dropped by around 60% in the cisplatin plus CAC1-siRNA group. Conversely, the P53 mRNA expressions obtained nearly a two-fold increase in the cisplatin group, in addition to a five-fold increase in the cisplatin plus CAC1-siRNA group, and the BAX mRNA levels had almost a two- and four-fold augmentation, respectively. Meanwhile, P53, BAX and BCL2 showed the same alteration patterns in western blot examinations. Conclusions CAC1 can promote cell proliferation in the AGS gastric cancer cell line. Moreover, it can prevent AGS cells from experiencing cisplatin-induced apoptosis via modulating expressions of P53, BCL2 and BAX.

Abstract
In this work, a novel amino functionalized Cu(II) ion-imprinted organic-inorganic hybrid monolithic column (Cu(II)-IIHMC) was prepared via one-pot co-condensation and the combination of sol-gel and ion-imprinting techniques in a fused capillary. The Cu(II)-IIHMC was used as solid phase microextraction (SPME) matrix followed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the analysis of trace Cu(II). The prepared Cu(II)-IIHMC has good mechanical strength, stable imprinting sites and homogeneous structure of network skeleton with large flow-through pores by optimizing the synthesis process. Under the optimized conditions, the Cu(II)-IIHMC can selectively adsorb Cu(II) with the adsorption capacity of 3.13 mg g-1. With enrichment factor of 10-fold, the calibration curve was established in the range of 0.05-50 μg L-1 with r2 of 0.9992 and the detection limit was 0.008 μg L-1 for Cu(II). Compared with the non-imprinted hybrid monolithic column (Cu(II)-NIHMC), the Cu(II)-IIHMC possesses better selectivity, anti-interference ability and adsorption capacity. The Cu(II)-IIHMC can specifically capture the target ion in the presence of competitive ions, with the selectivity coefficients exceeding 39.4. The protocol was validated by analyzing Certified Reference Materials of standard sediment, soil and iron ore, and the results were in good agreement with certified values. Moreover, the proposed in-tube SPME procedure can not only preconcentrate trace Cu(II), but also effectively reduce the matrix effect and powerfully eliminate the interference from the main metals in real samples. Therefore, the developed SPME-ICP-MS method with facile preparation, specific selectivity, high sensitivity and efficient analysis, was applied in the determination of trace Cu(II) in environmental and mineral samples with the recoveries of 89.8-111.8% in all spiked samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was designed to assess the neuroprotective effect of xenon-induced delayed postconditioning on spinal cord ischaemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) and to determine the time of administration for best neuroprotection in a rat model of spinal cord IRI. METHODS Fifty male rats were randomly divided equally into a sham group, control group, and three xenon postconditioning groups (n=10 per group). The control group underwent spinal cord IRI and immediately inhaled 50% nitrogen/50% oxygen for 3 h at the initiation of reperfusion. The three xenon postconditioning groups underwent the same surgical procedure and immediately inhaled 50% xenon/50% oxygen for 3 h at the initiation of reperfusion or 1 and 2 h after reperfusion. The sham operation group underwent the same surgical procedure without aortic occlusion, and inhaled 50% nitrogen/50% oxygen. Neurological function was assessed using the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan score at 4, 24, and 48 h of reperfusion. Histological examination was performed using Nissl staining and immunohistochemistry, and apoptosis was detected by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick end-labelling staining. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the three xenon postconditioning groups showed improvements in neurological outcomes, and had more morphologically normal neurones at 48 h of reperfusion. Apoptotic cell death was reduced and the ratio of Bcl-2/Bax immunoreactivity increased in xenon-treated rats compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS Xenon postconditioning up to 2 h after reperfusion provided protection against spinal cord IRI in rats, but the greatest neuroprotection occurred with administration of xenon for 1 h at reperfusion.

Abstract
Iron (Fe) is one of the essential nutrient elements for plant growth and development. However, the potential roles of iron nanomaterials in regulating growth and nitrogen fixation and modulating rhizomicrobiome in legume plants are poorly known. In this study, we reported that 10 mg L-1 is the optimal concentration for the application of iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) and seed soaking plus leaf spraying is the optimal application method of FeNPs in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.); FeNPs had more positive effects on the growth and nitrogen fixation capability in alfalfa than FeCl2; FeNPs enhanced the intensity of corporations and competitions among rhizosphere fungal taxa of alfalfa. This work provides insights into the regulation mechanism of FeNPs on growth, nitrogen fixation, and the composition and function of rhizosphere microbial community in legume plants as well as the potential application value of FeNPs in agriculture system.

Abstract
This study evaluates the performance of AERMOD, the current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulatory model, in simulating particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) dispersion from a poultry pullet facility. At the source, the daily mean PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations with strong diurnal patterns were estimated to be 436.01 ± 166.77 μg m⁻³ and 291.09 ± 105.81 μg m⁻³, respectively. This corresponded to daily mean emission rates of PM10 and PM2.5 as 0.067-0.073 g sec⁻¹ and 0.044-0.047 g sec⁻¹,respectively. The modeled hourly PM concentration showed acceptable accuracy relative to the measured PM concentrations downwind of the source. Increasing the averaging period from hourly to daily resulted in improved prediction. The simulations revealed that PM concentrations at and beyond the property line of the poultry facility were within the National Ambient Air Quality Standards. This study suggested that AERMOD is effective in predicting and assessing the impacts of PM downwind of poultry facilities.

Abstract
Background MicroRNAs play crucial roles in tumorigenesis and tumor progression. miR-770 has been reported to be downregulated in several cancers and affects cancer cell proliferation, apoptosis, metastasis and drug resistance. However, the role and underlying molecular mechanism of miR-770 in human glioma remain unknown and need to be further elucidated. Methods The expression of miR-770 in glioma tissues and cell lines was measured by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) to explore the association of miR-770 expression with clinicopathological characteristics. The expression of CDK8 was detected by qRT-PCR and Western blotting in glioma tissues. A target prediction program and a dual-luciferase reporter assay were used to confirm that CDK8 is a target gene of miR-770. MTT and cell counting assays were used to assess the effect of miR-770 on glioma cell proliferation. The cell cycle distribution and apoptosis were examined by flow cytometry. CDK8 siRNA and overexpression were used to further confirm the function of the target gene. Results We demonstrated that miR-770 expression was downregulated in human glioma tissues and cell lines. The overexpression of miR-770 inhibited glioma cell proliferation and cell cycle G1-S transition and induced apoptosis. The inhibition of miR-770 facilitated cell proliferation and G1-S transition and suppressed apoptosis. miR-770 expression was inversely correlated with CDK8 expression in glioma tissues. CDK8 was confirmed to be a direct target of miR-770 by using a luciferase reporter assay. The overexpression of miR-770 decreased CDK8 expression at both the mRNA and protein levels, and the suppression of miR-770 increased CDK8 expression. Importantly, CDK8 silencing recapitulated the cellular and molecular effects observed upon miR-770 overexpression, and CDK8 overexpression eliminated the effects of miR-770 overexpression on glioma cells. Moreover, both exogenous expression of miR-770 and silencing of CDK8 resulted in suppression of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Conclusions Our study demonstrates that miR-770 inhibits glioma cell proliferation and G1-S transition and induces apoptosis through suppression of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway by targeting CDK8. These findings suggest that miR-770 plays a significant role in glioma progression and serves as a potential therapeutic target for glioma.

Abstract
AIM To reveal the serum proteomic profiling of intraductal carcinoma (IDC) patients in China, establish a serum proteome fractionation technique for choosing magnetic beads for proteomic analysis in breast cancer research; and identify differentially expressed peptides (m/z; P < 0.0001) as potential biomarkers of early IDCs. METHODS We used two different kinds of magnetic beads (magnetic bead-based weak cation exchange chromatography (MB-WCX) and immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography (MB-IMAC-Cu)) to analyze 32 patients with early stage (stages I-II) IDC and 32 healthy control serum samples for proteomic profiling by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis. The mass spectra, analyzed using ClinProTools software, distinguished between IDC patients and healthy individuals based on k-nearest neighbor genetic algorithm. RESULTS The serum samples purified in the MB-WCX group provided better proteomic patterns than the MB-IMAC-Cu group. The samples purified by MB-WCX had better average peak numbers, higher peak intensities, and better capturing ability of low abundance proteins or peptides in serum samples. In addition, the MB-WCX and MB-IMAC-Cu purification methods, followed MALDI-TOF MS identification and use of ClinProTools software accurately distinguished patients with early stage IDC from healthy individuals. CONCLUSION Serum proteomic profiling by MALDI-TOF MS is a novel potential tool for the clinical diagnosis of patients with IDC in China.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the drinking status and associated factors in adults in China. Methods: Based on the 2010-2012 China National Nutrition and Health Survey (CNNHS), a total of 135 824 participants aged ≥18 were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to investigate the associated factors for drinking status. Results: The overall drinking rate was 30.5% in Chinese adults, 53.8% in men, and 12.2% in women. The excessive drinking rate was 14.0% in men and 1.1% in women. The daily drinking rate was 25.7% in men and 10.9% in women. Men mainly consumed multi-type wines, but women preferred beer. The overall harmful drinking rate was 7.1%. The excessive drinking rate, daily drinking rate, and harmful drinking rate increased first but then declined with age. All the four rates were positively related with physical activity. Conclusions: The drinking rate, excessive drinking rate, daily drinking rate and harmful drinking rate were high in adults in China. Drinking status was associated with age, sex, marital status, education level, smoking status and physical activity.

Abstract
Myocardial Ca2+ handling during excitation-contraction coupling has been modelled mathematically to gain a better insight into the expectation that Ca2+ sensitization of contractile machinery may save myocardial energy utilization for Ca2+ handling. The basic model of myocardial Ca2+ kinetics and mechanoenergetics involved the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), sarcoplasm, troponin C (Tn) and crossbridges (CB). The relations among the released Ca2+ ions from the SR, peak concentrations of sarcoplasmic free Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) and Ca(2+)-bound troponin ([TnCa]) and peak contractile force were computed, based upon the assumptions that the released Ca2+ ions diffuse as free Ca2+ in sarcoplasm, bind kinetically with Tn with an association rate constant of k1, dissociate from TnCa with a dissociation rate constant of k2, and are sequestered into the SR with consumption of ATP. TnCa was associated with CB cycling to develop force with a set of given on and off rate constants. The association constant Ka (= k1/k2) of TnCa as an index of Ca2+ sensitivity of Tn was varied 32-fold from 0.25 to 8/microM. Results showed that Ca2+ sensitization from a lower Ka level could most sharply decrease the total Ca2+ release required to develop the same contractile force. Thus, it would reduce the total Ca2+ handling energy that the SR uses to maintain the same contractility.

Abstract
We made acute cardiac failure in excised cross-circulated canine hearts by a new coronary perfusion protocol consisting of Ca2+ free Tyrode perfusion for the first 10 min, high Ca2+ (16 mmol/l) Tyrode perfusion for the next 5 min, and normal Tyrode perfusion for the last 5 min interrupting blood cross circulation. After 50 min from the blood recirculation, left ventricular contractility was stably depressed to 60% of control. We studied mechanoenergetics of these acute failing hearts for the next 1-3 h. Then, we prepared mitochondria from these excised failing hearts and the support dogs' normal hearts to examine their mitochondrial respiratory function by the respiratory control index (RCI) and the oxygen consumption rate in state III (State III O2). RCI and State III O2 were significantly smaller in the failing hearts than in the normal hearts. However, sham protocol consisting of normal Tyrode coronary perfusion for 20 min did not affect RCI and State III O2. These results revealed that the mitochondrial respiratory function was moderately impaired in these acute failing hearts made by the new short-term Ca2+ intervention. However, no ultrastructural injuries of mitochondria were detected in these failing hearts.

Abstract
Gastric cancer (GC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, but the mechanisms remain unknown. Here we report that family with sequence similarity 196 member B (FAM196B) is highly expressed in primary GC tissues and the expression level is correlated with the clinicopathologic characteristics of GC. In this experiment, knockdown of FAM196B suppressed GC cell proliferation and induced G1/G0 to S phase cell cycle arrest by regulating Cyclin D1, Cyclin A and CDK2 expressions. Furthermore, we investigated the molecular mechanism of FAM196B action in GC. The results showed that knockdown of FAM196B inhibited the activation of AKT signaling pathway. We further revealed that activating of AKT rescued the effect of FAM196B knockdown on cell proliferation and drove cell re-enter into the S phase of the cell cycle with SC79 (a AKT activator). Our findings demonstrated that FAM196B may promote GC cell proliferation by activating AKT signaling pathway. Taken together, this study provides a new evidence that FAM196B functions as a novel oncogene and could be a potential therapeutic target in therapy of GC.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of waist circumference (WC) and abdominal obesity (AO) among Chinese adults aged 18 and above. Methods: Data were collected from China National Nutrition and Health Surveillance in 2010-2012. Multi-stage stratifies proportion to the population cluster random sampling method was conducted to determine 120 265 subjects aged 18 and above at 150 counties in 31 provinces in China mainland. WC was determined for all subjects, and AO was judged according to the "Healthy Adult Weight Determination" (WS/T 428-2013). Using the demographic data published by the National Bureau of Statistics of China in 2009, we performed complex sampling weighted treatment to calculate the WC, AO rate and 95%CI. Results: The mean WC of Chinese men aged 18 and above was 82.8 cm, which of urban men (84.1 cm) was higher than that of rural men (81.4 cm) (P<0.001). The average WC of women was 78.5 cm. There was no statistical difference between urban (78.7 cm) and rural women (78.4 cm) (P=0.965). With the increase of education level, the mean WC of male increased gradually from 81.2 cm to 84.3 cm (P<0.001), and the mean WC of female decreased from 80.3 cm to 74.3 cm (P<0.001). With the family income rose, the mean WC of men increased gradually from 81.9 cm to 84.7 cm (P<0.001), and the mean of WC of women decreased from 78.8 cm to 77.6 cm (P<0.001). The AO rate was 25.7% (95% CI: 23.7%-27.7%) in adults aged 18 years and older. The AO rate in urban males (29.8% (95%CI: 26.5%-33.1%)) was significantly higher than that of rural males (22.3% (95%CI: 19.3%-25.2%)) (P=0.001). There was no significant difference in the female AO rate between urban (25.6% (95%CI: 22.8%-28.4%)) and rural areas (25.1% (95%CI: 22.2%-27.9%)) (P=0.772). With the increase of the educational level, the AO rate of men increased from 20.1% (95%CI: 18.0%-22.1%) to 32.6% (95%CI: 28.6%-36.6%) (P<0.001), the rate of women decreased gradually from 31.3% (95%CI: 28.7%-33.9%) to 13.5% (95%CI: 10.9%-16.1%) (P<0.001). With the increase of family income, the AO rate of male increased gradually from 23.3% (95%CI: 20.7%-25.9%) to 31.8% (95%CI: 27.6%-36.1%) (P<0.001), the rate of female decreased from 26.5% (95% CI: 24.2%-28.7%) to 20.0% (95% CI: 17.2%-22.8%) (P<0.001). Conclusion: The prevalence of AO among Chinese residents aged 18 years and above was high, and there were significant differences in WC and AO rate between men and women under different age, region, educational level and family income level.

Abstract
Acute abdomen, abdominal trauma, gastrointestinal bleeding and gastrointestinal tumors are the main conditions that are routinely treated in gastrointestinal surgery department with high incidence and critical condition. These conditions need emergency or selective operations. During the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it's a great challenge for us to meet the patients' requirement under the situation. As the COVID-19 was brought under control in China, the Department of General Surgery in Nanfang Hospital resumed regular medical services gradually. Based on our clinical practice, the four major measures of strengthening pre-hospital screening, perioperative prevention and control, medical staff protection, and ward management were adopted. These main measures include the strict implementation of the appointment system and triage system before admission; the conduction of epidemiological and preliminary screening of viral nucleic acids; the chest CT examination during the perioperative period to re-screen COVID-19; the reduction of the risk of droplets and aerosol transmission; the minimally invasive surgery combined with enhanced recovery program in order to reduce patient's susceptibility and shorten the length of postoperative hospital stay; the reinforcement of specific infection control training for medical staff; the strict implementation of hierarchical protection; the establishment of gastrointestinal surgery prevention and control system; the rehearsal of emergency exercise; the installation of quarantine wards; the screening and management of family care-givers; the strict disinfection of environment and materials. Our preliminary practice shows that following the work guidelines issued by the Guangdong Province COVID-19 Prevention and Control Office and adopting precise management strategies in combination with the specific clinical features of gastrointestinal surgery, it is possible to safely resume regular care for the patients and comply to epidemic control at the same time.

Abstract
Objective: To assess the dietary intake status of Chinese lactating women during the first month postpartum. Methods: Data were extracted from Chinese National Nutrition and Health Surveillance, children aged 0-5 years and lactating women (2013). A total of 55 counties from 30 provinces in China (excluding the Tibet Autonomous Region) were selected using a multi-stage stratified cluster randomization sampling method. A group of 3 623 lactating women, at 1-6 months after delivery, were investigated in the study. The semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to collect information on frequencies and amounts of food consumed. Differences in food consumption rates and dietary intake in lactating women having different characteristics were analyzed and compared. Results: To eliminate abnormal values, 3 300 lactating women were included in the study. During the first month postpartum, food types with higher consumption rates were animal products (98.2%, 3 239) and vegetables (90.7%, 2 987), in addition to cereals (100%) and liquids (100%). The consumption rate of fruits was 67.4% (2 222) and the lowest consumption rate was for dairy products (38.3%, 1 262). The median intake of cereals, vegetables, fruits and animal products were 247.8, 150.0, 40.0 and 178.6 g/d, respectively. The daily median intake of dairy products and soybean/nut products was 0.0 g/d. Overall, the lactating women consumed 895.7 ml/d liquids. About 49.3% (1 627) of the subjects consumed less than the recommended intake for animal products in Chinese Dietary Guideline (2016). More than 50% of the lactating women consumed less than the recommended intakes for the other types of food, especially dairy, soybean/nut and liquids. The consumption rates for dairy products were 26.9%, 29.4%, 31.8% and 33.8% and those for soybean/nut products were 33.9% , 35.8% , 37.5% and 41.7% for the lactating women living in rural areas, with educations at junior high school level and below, with average family incomes under 15 000 yuan per capita in 2012 and who work as household mothers, respectively. These consumption rates for dairy and soybean/nuts were significantly lower than those in women living in cities (48.4%, 55.0%), with an education level of senior high school or above (48.8%, 55.7%), with average family income over 15 000 yuan per capita in 2012 (45.5%, 52.8%) and who work outside the home (43.7%, 49.4%). P values were <0.05 for all comparisons. Conclusion: The daily intake of all foods by lactating women during the first month postpartum was lower than the levels recommended in Chinese Dietary Guideline (2016). The consumption rate of dairy and soybean/nut products during this time period was low, especially for those living in rural areas, with education levels of junior high school and below, with average family incomes less than 15 000 yuan per capita in 2012 and who are housemothers.

Abstract
The present study was performed to further clarify the influences of vasectomy on functions of testis and to disclose the possible mechanisms of infertility after vasovasostomy (VV). Thirty-one rabbits were divided into sham-operated control group (C), vasectomy control group (V), VV fertility group (VaF) and VV infertility group (VaI). Serum testosterone (ST) level, testicular cAMP, androgen binding protein (ABP), nuclear androgen receptor (NAR) concentrations, testis cell membrane Na(+)-, K(+)-ATPase, Mg(2+)-ATPase activities, sperm density and testis weight were measured. Vasectomy resulted in significantly reduced cAMP, Na(+)-, K(+)-ATPase, Mg(2+)-ATPase, testis weight and increased ABP; VV completely restore testis weight in VaF and VaI, Na(+)-, K(+)-ATPase, Mg(2+)-ATPase in VaF, partly cAMP in VaF and VaI, Na(+)-, K(+)-ATPase, Mg(2+)-ATPase in VaI, but did not restore ABP. The NAR content in VaI was significantly lower than those in C, VaF and V. No statistical differences among 4 groups were seen in Kd values for [3H]-T. ST levels in VaF, VaI and V were insignificantly different compared with C, but the value in VaF was higher than that in VaI (p < 0.05). Sperm density after VV reached 122 +/- 62 x 10(6)/ml in VaF and 10 +/- 24 x 10(6)/ml in VaI, both in VaF and VaI were significantly low compared with C (p < 0.001), and the value in VaI was remarkedly lower than that in VaF (p < 0.001). It was shown that sperm density was positively correlated with cAMP content, Na(+)-, K(+)-ATPase, Mg(2+)-ATPase activities, but negatively with ABP. These results suggest that vasectomy gives rise to damage to the testis, and vasovasostomy does not appear completely effective in reversing testicular changes.
