Abstract
BACKGROUND In patients with high cholesterol levels, lowering the cholesterol level reduces the risk of coronary events, but the effect of lowering cholesterol levels in the majority of patients with coronary disease, who have average levels, is less clear. METHODS In a double-blind trial lasting five years we administered either 40 mg of pravastatin per day or placebo to 4159 patients (3583 men and 576 women) with myocardial infarction who had plasma total cholesterol levels below 240 mg per deciliter (mean, 209) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels of 115 to 174 mg per deciliter (mean, 139). The primary end point was a fatal coronary event or a nonfatal myocardial infarction. RESULTS The frequency of the primary end point was 10.2 percent in the pravastatin group and 13.2 percent in the placebo group, an absolute difference of 3 percentage points and a 24 percent reduction in risk (95 percent confidence interval, 9 to 36 percent; P = 0.003). Coronary bypass surgery was needed in 7.5 percent of the patients in the pravastatin group and 10 percent of those in the placebo group, a 26 percent reduction (P=0.005), and coronary angioplasty was needed in 8.3 percent of the pravastatin group and 10.5 percent of the placebo group, a 23 percent reduction (P=0.01). The frequency of stroke was reduced by 31 percent (P=0.03). There were no significant differences in overall mortality or mortality from noncardiovascular causes. Pravastatin lowered the rate of coronary events more among women than among men. The reduction in coronary events was also greater in patients with higher pretreatment levels of LDL cholesterol. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate that the benefit of cholesterol-lowering therapy extends to the majority of patients with coronary disease who have average cholesterol levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of dietary soluble fibers on blood cholesterol are uncertain. OBJECTIVE This meta-analysis of 67 controlled trials was performed to quantify the cholesterol-lowering effect of major dietary fibers. DESIGN Least-squares regression analyses were used to test the effect on blood lipids of pectin, oat bran, guar gum, and psyllium. Independent variables were type and amount of soluble fiber, initial cholesterol concentration, and other important study characteristics. RESULTS Soluble fiber, 2-10 g/d, was associated with small but significant decreases in total cholesterol [-0.045 mmol L(-1).g soluble fiber(-1) (95% CI: -0.054, -0.035)] and LDL cholesterol [-0.057 mmol.L(-1).g(-1) (95% CI: -0.070, -0.044)]. The effects on plasma lipids of soluble fiber from oat, psyllium, or pectin were not significantly different. We were unable to compare effects of guar because of the limited number of studies using 2-10 g/d. Triacylglycerols and HDL cholesterol were not significantly influenced by soluble fiber. Lipid changes were independent of study design, treatment length, and background dietary fat content. CONCLUSIONS Various soluble fibers reduce total and LDL cholesterol by similar amounts. The effect is small within the practical range of intake. For example, 3 g soluble fiber from oats (3 servings of oatmeal, 28 g each) can decrease total and LDL cholesterol by approximately 0.13 mmol/L. Increasing soluble fiber can make only a small contribution to dietary therapy to lower cholesterol.

Abstract
INDEPTH geophysical and geological observations imply that a partially molten midcrustal layer exists beneath southern Tibet. This partially molten layer has been produced by crustal thickening and behaves as a fluid on the time scale of Himalayan deformation. It is confined on the south by the structurally imbricated Indian crust underlying the Tethyan and High Himalaya and is underlain, apparently, by a stiff Indian mantle lid. The results suggest that during Neogene time the underthrusting Indian crust has acted as a plunger, displacing the molten middle crust to the north while at the same time contributing to this layer by melting and ductile flow. Viewed broadly, the Neogene evolution of the Himalaya is essentially a record of the southward extrusion of the partially molten middle crust underlying southern Tibet.

Abstract
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are produced by all domains of life. In Gram-negative bacteria, EVs are produced by the pinching off of the outer membrane; however, how EVs escape the thick cell walls of Gram-positive bacteria, mycobacteria and fungi is still unknown. Nonetheless, EVs have been described in a variety of cell-walled organisms, including Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Cryptococcus neoformans. These EVs contain varied cargo, including nucleic acids, toxins, lipoproteins and enzymes, and have important roles in microbial physiology and pathogenesis. In this Review, we describe the current status of vesiculogenesis research in thick-walled microorganisms and discuss the cargo and functions associated with EVs in these species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although inactivated hepatitis A vaccine is known to be well tolerated and immunogenic in healthy children and adults, its efficacy has yet to be established. METHODS To evaluate the efficacy of the hepatitis A vaccine in protecting against clinically apparent disease, we conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in an Hasidic Jewish community in upstate New York that has had recurrent outbreaks of hepatitis A. At the beginning of a summer outbreak, 1037 healthy seronegative children 2 to 16 years of age were randomly assigned to receive one intramuscular injection of a highly purified, formalin-inactivated hepatitis A vaccine or placebo. A case was defined by the presence of typical signs and symptoms, a diagnostic increase in IgM antibody to hepatitis A, and a serum concentration of alanine aminotransferase at least twice the upper limit of normal. Cases occurring greater than or equal to 50 days after the injection were included in the evaluation of efficacy. The children were followed for a mean of 103 days. RESULTS A total of 519 children received vaccine, and 518 received placebo. The vaccine was well tolerated, with no serious adverse reactions. From day 50 after the injection, 25 cases of clinically apparent hepatitis A occurred in the placebo group and none in the vaccine group (P less than 0.001), confirming that the vaccine had 100 percent protective efficacy. Before day 21, seven cases occurred in the vaccine group and three cases in the placebo group. After that time, there were no cases among vaccine recipients and 34 cases among placebo recipients. CONCLUSIONS The inactivated purified hepatitis A vaccine that we tested is well tolerated, and a single dose is highly protective against clinically apparent hepatitis A.

Abstract
INDEPTH seismic reflection profiling shows that the decollement beneath which Indian lithosphere underthrusts the Himalaya extends at least 225 kilometers north of the Himalayan deformation front to a depth of approximately 50 kilometers. Prominent reflections appear at depths of 15 to 18 kilometers near where the decollement reflector apparently terminates. These reflections extend north of the Zangbo suture to the Damxung graben of the Tibet Plateau. Some of these reflections have locally anomalous amplitudes (bright spots) and coincident negative polarities implying that they are produced by fluids in the crust. The presence of geothermal activity and high heat flow in the regions of these reflections and the tectonic setting suggest that the bright spots mark granitic magmas derived by partial melting of the tectonically thickened crust.

Abstract
Apoptosis is an evolutionarily conserved 'suicide' programme present in all metazoan cells. Despite its highly conserved nature, it is only recently that any of the molecular mechanisms underlying apoptosis have been identified. Several lines of reasoning indicate that apoptosis and cell proliferation coincide to some degree: many oncogenes that promote cell cycle progression also induce apoptosis; damage to the cell cycle or to DNA integrity is a potent trigger of apoptosis; and the key tumour suppressor proteins, p105rb and p53, exert direct effects both on cell viability and on cell cycle progression. There is less evidence, however, to indicate that apoptosis and the cell cycle share common molecular mechanisms. Moreover, the interleukin-1 beta converting enzyme (ICE) family of cysteine proteases is now known to play a key role in apoptosis but has no discernible role in the cell cycle, arguing that the two processes are discrete.

Abstract
"Natural" Igs, mainly IgM, comprise part of the innate immune system present in healthy individuals, including antigen-free mice. These Igs are thought to delay pathogenicity of infecting agents until antigen-induced high affinity Igs of all isotypes are produced. Previous studies suggested that the acquired humoral response arises directly from the innate response, i.e., that B cells expressing natural IgM, upon antigen encounter, differentiate to give rise both to cells that secrete high amounts of IgM and to cells that undergo affinity maturation and isotype switching. However, by using a murine model of influenza virus infection, we demonstrate here that the B cells that produce natural antiviral IgM neither increase their IgM production nor undergo isotype switching to IgG2a in response to the infection. These cells are distinct from the B cells that produce the antiviral response after encounter with the pathogen. Our data therefore demonstrate that the innate and the acquired humoral immunities to influenza virus are separate effector arms of the immune system and that antigen exposure per se is not sufficient to increase natural antibody production.

Abstract
The use of aluminum for plasmonic nanostructures opens up new possibilities, such as access to short-wavelength regions of the spectrum, complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatibility, and the possibility of low-cost, sustainable, mass-producible plasmonic materials. Here we examine the properties of individual Al nanorod antennas with cathodoluminescence (CL). This approach allows us to image the local density of optical states (LDOS) of Al nanorod antennas with a spatial resolution less than 20 nm and to identify the radiative modes of these nanostructures across the visible and into the UV spectral range. The results, which agree well with finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations, lay the groundwork for precise Al plasmonic nanostructure design for a variety of applications.

Abstract
This Quick Reference Guide for Clinicians contains recommendations on the care of patients with unstable angina based on a combination of evidence obtained through extensive literature reviews and consensus among members of an expert panel. Principal conclusions include the following. (1) Many patients suspected of having unstable angina can be discharged home after adequate initial evaluation. (2) Further outpatient evaluation may be scheduled for up to 72 hours after initial presentation for patients with clinical symptoms of unstable angina judged at initial evaluation to be at low risk for complications. (3) Patients with acute ischemic heart disease judged to be at intermediate or high risk of complications should be hospitalized for careful monitoring of their clinical course. (4) Intravenous thrombolytic therapy should not be administered to patients without evidence of ST segment elevation and acute myocardial infarction. (5) Assessment of prognosis by noninvasive testing often aids selection of appropriate therapy. (6) Coronary angiography is appropriate for patients judged to be at high risk for cardiac complications or death based on their clinical course or results of noninvasive testing. (7) Coronary artery bypass surgery should be recommended for almost all patients with left main disease and many patients with three-vessel disease, especially those with left ventricular dysfunction. (8) The discharge care plan should include continued monitoring of symptoms; appropriate drug therapy, including aspirin; risk-factor modification; and counseling.

Abstract
Anatomical structures demonstrating increased glucose uptake during the various stages of amygdaloid kindling in rats were identified by the 14C-2-deoxyglucose (DG) autoradiographic technique. Partial (stages 1 and 2) seizures were correlated with increased DG uptake in the ipsilateral amygdala and its direct projection fields. The appearance of generalized motor (stages 3,4, and 5) seizures was accompanied by less limbic involvement and recruitment of a bilateral system including substantia nigra, specific and nonspecific thalamic nuclei, globus pallidus, and neocortex. Increased hippocampal DG uptake was correlated with prolonged amygdaloid after discharge duration but not with the behavioral seizure stage. This study does not reveal which of these structures are responsible for the observed behavioral and electrical events and which are activated by them. It does suggest, however, that three discrete anatomical systems underlie the generation of partial seizures, generalized motor seizures, and local after discharge.

Abstract
The origin recognition complex (ORC) binds to origins of replication in budding yeast. We have cloned a Xenopus homolog of the largest ORC polypeptide (XORC1). Immunodepletion of XOrc1 from Xenopus egg extracts blocks the initiation of DNA replication. We have purified Xenopus ORC, consisting of a protein complex similar to yeast ORC. In Xenopus egg extracts, ORC associates with chromatin throughout G1 and S phases. RLF-M, a component of the replication licensing system, also associates with chromatin early in the cell cycle but dissociates during S phase. We show that the assembly of RLF-M onto chromatin is dependent on the presence of chromatin-bound ORC, leading to sequential assembly of initiation proteins onto replication origins during the cell cycle.

Abstract
A novel human protein serine/threonine phosphatase, PP5, and a structurally related phosphatase in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, PPT1, have been identified from their cDNA and gene respectively. Their predicted molecular mass is 58 kDa and they comprise a C-terminal phosphatase catalytic domain and an N-terminal domain, which has four repeats of 34 amino acids, three of which are tandemly arranged. The phosphatase domain possesses all the invariant motifs of the PP1/PP2A/PP2B gene family, but is not closely related to any other known member (< or = 40% identity). Thus PP5 and PPT1 comprise a new subfamily. The repeats in the N-terminal domain are similar to the tetratricopeptide repeat (TPR) motifs which have been found in several proteins that are required for mitosis, transcription and RNA splicing. Bacterially expressed PP5 is able to dephosphorylate serine residues in proteins and is more sensitive than PP1 to the tumour promoter okadaic acid. A 2.3 kb mRNA encoding PP5 is present in all human tissues examined. Investigation of the intracellular distribution of PP5 by immunofluorescence, using two different antibodies raised against the TPR and phosphatase domains, localizes PP5 predominantly to the nucleus. This suggests that, like other nuclear TPR-containing proteins, it may play a role in the regulation of RNA biogenesis and/or mitosis.

Abstract
We report a comprehensive electron crystallographic analysis of conformational changes in the photocycle of wild-type bacteriorhodopsin and in a variety of mutant proteins with kinetic defects in the photocycle. Specific intermediates that accumulate in the late stages of the photocycle of wild-type bacteriorhodopsin, the single mutants D38R, D96N, D96G, T46V, L93A and F219L, and the triple mutant D96G/F171C/F219L were trapped by freezing two-dimensional crystals in liquid ethane at varying times after illumination with a light flash. Electron diffraction patterns recorded from these crystals were used to construct projection difference Fourier maps at 3.5 A resolution to define light-driven changes in protein conformation. Our experiments demonstrate that in wild-type bacteriorhodopsin, a large protein conformational change occurs within approximately 1 ms after illumination. Analysis of structural changes in wild-type and mutant bacteriorhodopsins under conditions when either the M or the N intermediate is preferentially accumulated reveals that there are only small differences in structure between M and N intermediates trapped in the same protein. However, a considerably larger variation is observed when the same optical intermediate is trapped in different mutants. In some of the mutants, a partial conformational change is present even prior to illumination, with additional changes occurring upon illumination. Selected mutations, such as those in the D96G/F171C/F219L triple mutant, can sufficiently destabilize the wild-type structure to generate almost the full extent of the conformational change in the dark, with minimal additional light-induced changes. We conclude that the differences in structural changes observed in mutants that display long-lived M, N or O intermediates are best described as variations of one fundamental type of conformational change, rather than representing structural changes that are unique to the optical intermediate that is accumulated. Our observations thus support a simplified view of the photocycle of wild-type bacteriorhodopsin in which the structures of the initial state and the early intermediates (K, L and M1) are well approximated by one protein conformation, while the structures of the later intermediates (M2, N and O) are well approximated by the other protein conformation. We propose that in wild-type bacteriorhodopsin and in most mutants, this conformational change between the M1 and M2 states is likely to make an important contribution towards efficiently switching proton accessibility of the Schiff base from the extracellular side to the cytoplasmic side of the membrane.

Abstract
Prostate cancer, the most frequent solid cancer in older men, is a leading cause of cancer deaths. Although proliferation and differentiation of normal prostate epithelia and the initial growth of prostate cancer cells are androgen-dependent, prostate cancers ultimately become androgen-independent and refractory to hormone therapy. The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) gene has been widely used as a diagnostic indicator for androgen-dependent and -independent prostate cancer. Androgen-induced and prostate epithelium-specific PSA expression is regulated by a proximal promoter and an upstream enhancer via several androgen receptor binding sites. However, little progress has been made in identifying androgen-independent regulatory elements involved in PSA gene regulation. We report the isolation of a novel, prostate epithelium-specific Ets transcription factor, PDEF (prostate-derived Ets factor), that among the Ets family uniquely prefers binding to a GGAT rather than a GGAA core. PDEF acts as an androgen-independent transcriptional activator of the PSA promoter. PDEF also directly interacts with the DNA binding domain of androgen receptor and enhances androgen-mediated activation of the PSA promoter. Our results, as well as the critical roles of other Ets factors in cellular differentiation and tumorigenesis, strongly suggest that PDEF is an important regulator of prostate gland and/or prostate cancer development.

Abstract
The tal-1 gene is altered as a consequence of the t(1;14) (p32;q11) chromosome translocation observed in 3% of patients with T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). tal-1 encodes a helix-loop-helix (HLH) domain, a DNA binding and dimerization motif found in a number of proteins involved in cell growth and differentiation. We now report that an additional 25% of T-ALL patients bear tal-1 gene rearrangements that are not detected by karyotype analysis. These rearrangements result from a precise 90 kb deletion (designated tald) that arises independently in different patients by site-specific DNA recombination. Since the deletion junctions resemble the coding joints of assembled immunoglobulin genes, tald rearrangements are likely to be mediated by aberrant activity of the immunoglobulin recombinase. Moreover, t(1;14)(p32;q11) translocations and tald rearrangements disrupt the coding potential of tal-1 in an equivalent manner, and thereby generate a common genetic lesion shared by a significant proportion of T-ALL patients.

Abstract
We report here the isolation of a novel, highly tissue-restricted member of the ets transcription factor/oncogene family, ESE-1 (for epithelium-specific Ets), which has features distinct from those of any other ets-related factor. ESE-1 contains two putative DNA binding domains: an ETS domain, which is unique in that the 5' half shows relatively weak homology to known ets factors, and an A/T hook domain, found in HMG proteins and various other nuclear factors. In contrast to any known ets factors, ESE-1 is expressed exclusively in epithelial cells. ESE-1 expression is induced during terminal differentiation of the epidermis and in a primary human keratinocyte differentiation system. The keratinocyte terminal differentiation marker gene, SPRR2A, is a putative target for ESE-1, since SPRR2A expression during keratinocyte differentiation correlates with induction of ESE-1 expression, and ESE-1 binds with high affinity to and transactivates the ets binding site in the SPRR2A promoter. ESE-1 also binds to and transactivates the enhancer of the Endo A gene, a potential target for ESE-1 in simple epithelia. Due to the important role that other ets factors play in cellular differentiation, ESE-1 is expected to be a critical regulator of epithelial cell differentiation.

Abstract
Since 2003, highly pathogenic A(H5N1) influenza viruses have been the cause of large-scale death in poultry and the subsequent infection and death of over 140 humans. A group of 55 influenza A(H5N1) viruses isolated from various regions of South East Asia between 2004 and 2006 were tested for their susceptibility to the anti-influenza drugs the neuraminidase inhibitors and adamantanes. The majority of strains were found to be fully sensitive to the neuraminidase inhibitors oseltamivir carboxylate, zanamivir and peramivir; however two strains demonstrated increased IC50 values. Sequence analysis of these strains revealed mutations in the normally highly conserved residues 116 and 117 of the N1 neuraminidase. Sequence analysis of the M2 gene showed that all of the A(H5N1) viruses from Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia contained mutations (L26I and S31N) associated with resistance to the adamantane drugs (rimantadine and amantadine), while strains from Indonesia were found to be a mix of both adamantane resistant (S31N) and sensitive viruses. None of the A(H5N1) viruses from Myanmar contained mutations known to confer adamantane resistance. These results support the use of neuraminidase inhibitors as the most appropriate class of antiviral drug to prevent or treat human A(H5N1) virus infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary antioxidants, including carotenoids, are hypothesized to decrease the risk of age-related cataracts by preventing oxidation of proteins or lipids within the lens. However, prospective epidemiologic data concerning this phenomenon are limited. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to examine prospectively the association between carotenoid and vitamin A intakes and cataract extraction in men. DESIGN US male health professionals (n = 36644) who were 45-75 y of age in 1986 were included in this prospective cohort study. Others were subsequently included as they became 45 y of age. A detailed dietary questionnaire was used to assess intake of carotenoids and other nutrients. During 8 y of follow-up, 840 cases of senile cataract extraction were documented. RESULTS We observed a modestly lower risk of cataract extraction in men with higher intakes of lutein and zeaxanthin but not of other carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lycopene, and beta-cryptoxanthin) or vitamin A after other potential risk factors, including age and smoking, were controlled for. Men in the highest fifth of lutein and zeaxanthin intake had a 19% lower risk of cataract relative to men in the lowest fifth (relative risk: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.65, 1.01; P for trend = 0.03). Among specific foods high in carotenoids, broccoli and spinach were most consistently associated with a lower risk of cataract. CONCLUSIONS Lutein and zeaxanthin may decrease the risk of cataracts severe enough to require extraction, although this relation appears modest in magnitude. The present findings add support for recommendations to consume vegetables and fruit high in carotenoids daily.

Abstract
The RpoS transcription factor (also called sigma Sor sigma 38) is required for the expression of a number of stationary-phase and osmotically inducible genes in Escherichia coli. RpoS is also a virulence factor for several pathogenic bacteria, including Salmonella typhimurium. The activity of RpoS is regulated in response to several different signals, at the transcriptional and translational levels as well as by proteolysis. Here we report that host factor I (HF-I), the product of the hfq gene, is required for efficient expression of rpoS in S. typhimurium. HF-I is a small, heat-stable, site-specific RNA-binding protein originally characterized for its role in replication of the RNA bacteriophage Q beta of E. coli. Its role in the uninfected bacterial cell has previously been unknown. Assays of Beta-galactosidase in strains with rpoS-lac fusions, Western blot (immunoblot) analysis, and pulse-labeling and immunoprecipitation of both fusion proteins and native RpoS show that an S. typhimurium hfq mutant has a four- to sevenfold reduction in expression of rpoS that is attributable primarily to a defect in translation. These results add a new level of complexity to the regulation of RpoS activity.

Abstract
Cardiac beta-adrenoceptors and the positive inotropic effects of adenylate cyclase-dependent (dobutamine, histamine, forskolin) and adenylate cyclase-independent agents (isobutylmethylxanthine (IBMX), dibutyryl-cAMP (db-cAMP), digoxin, digitoxin and calcium were measured in papillary muscle strips from severely failing (NYHA IV), moderately failing (NYHA II-III) and non-failing (NYHA I) human hearts. The density of beta-adrenoceptors in three NYHA I patients were 40.0, 42.0 and 42.9 fmol mg-1 protein. The density of cardiac beta-adrenoceptors was significantly reduced in NYHA II-III to 18.0 +/- 1.1 fmol mg-1 protein (n = 16) and further reduced in NYHA IV to 9.5 +/- 1.6 fmol mg-1 protein (n = 7). The KD values did not differ between the groups. Correspondingly, the positive inotropic effect of dobutamine was significantly reduced in NYHA II-III and almost lost in NYHA IV. The positive inotropic effect of histamine was similar in non-failing and moderately failing myocardium but reduced in preparations from severely failing hearts (NYHA IV). The positive inotropic effect of IBMX was diminished in moderately and severely failing myocardium depending on the functional class of heart failure. In contrast, the effects of forskolin, db-cAMP, digoxin and digitoxin were not impaired in NYHA IV when compared with the maximal positive inotropic effect of calcium. It is concluded that in the failing human heart (a) the number of cardiac beta-adrenoceptors is reduced proportional to the severity of heart failure; (b) the receptor coupling of H2-receptors to adenylate cyclase may be impaired, but only in severe heart failure; (c) the basal cAMP formation may be diminished; and that (d) the catalytic subunit of the adenylate cyclase and the cAMP-dependent protein kinases may be promising targets for drugs to restore force of contraction in human heart failure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Observational studies have suggested that Helicobacter pylori may protect against gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), but these results could be due to bias or confounding factors. We addressed this in a prospective, double blind, randomized, controlled trial. METHODS H. pylori-positive patients with at least a 1-year history of heartburn with a normal endoscopy or grade A esophagitis were recruited. Patients were randomized to 20 mg omeprazole, 250 mg clarithromycin, and 500 mg tinidazole twice a day for 1 week or 20 mg omeprazole twice a day and identical placebos. A second concurrently recruited control group of H. pylori-negative patients were given open label 20 mg omeprazole twice a day for 1 week. All patients received 20 mg omeprazole twice a day for the following 3 weeks and 20 mg omeprazole once daily for a further 4 weeks. Omeprazole was discontinued at 8 weeks and patients were followed up for a further 10 months. A relapse was defined as moderate or severe reflux symptoms. H. pylori eradication was determined by 13C-urea breath test. RESULTS The H. pylori-positive cases were randomized to antibiotics (n = 93) or placebo (n = 97). Relapse of GERD occurred in 83% of each of the antibiotic, placebo, and H. pylori-negative groups during the 12-month study period. Life tables revealed no statistical difference between the 2 H. pylori-positive groups (log rank test, P = 0.84) or between the 3 groups (log rank test, P = 0.94) in the time to first relapse. Two patients in each group developed grade B esophagitis at 12 months. CONCLUSIONS H. pylori eradication therapy does not seem to influence relapse rates in GERD patients.

Abstract
The 'E test' is a method for measuring MICs of antimicrobial agents against bacteria and is based on diffusion of a pre-formed antibiotic gradient from a plastic strip. The performance of the E test was evaluated by comparison with a conventional agar dilution MIC method in tests with ten agents and a variety of organisms. Correlation between MICs by the agar dilution and E test methods was good, 98.85% results were within 2 log2 dilution steps in a total of 1304 tests. The E test is technically straightforward as tests are set up in the same way as the disc diffusion method. The versatility and ease of use of the E test make the method an attractive alternative to conventional dilution tests.
