Abstract
OBJECTIVE The principal aim of this research is to investigate the variables that exert a discernible impact on the overall survival (OS) of individuals afflicted with colorectal cancer (CRC) harboring pathologic stages 2-3, as delineated within the TNM staging schema tailored to CRC, an established framework governed by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with preoperative stages 1 and 4, patients with a history of other organ malignancy, patients who could not undergo curative resection, patients with systemic malignant diseases (leukemia, lymphoma, etc.), patients with synchronous tumors, and patients with positive surgical margins were excluded from the study. Notable pathological parameters, including tumor grade, perforation status, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, the presence of mucinous components, and tumor size, were ascertained through pathological examination of resected specimens. RESULTS Curative resection was performed on 241 patients. The mean age of all patients was calculated to be 65.67±16.04. The average tumor size was measured as 5.03±2.22 cm. The 1-year survival rate of the patients was found to be 84.3%, 3-year survival rate was 69.0%, and 5-year survival rate was 52.9%. According to the COX regression analysis, the categorical variables that were found to be significantly associated with OS were grade (p=0.046), emergency surgery (p<0.001), and tumor localization (p=0.015). CONCLUSIONS The initial patient and tumor characteristics at baseline have demonstrated substantial predictive capacity regarding patient outcomes following disease recurrence. Survival analyses showed that undergoing emergency surgery, having the tumor located in the rectum, and having a "poor" tumor grade adversely affected survival.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is recommended for patients over 60 years old with dyspeptic complaints, treatment-resistant dyspepsia, and alarming symptoms such as vomiting, weight loss, and dysphagia. However, colonoscopy is recommended for patients with abnormal colonic loops in their imaging, lower gastrointestinal bleeding-iron deficiency anemia, or patients with symptoms related to the lower gastrointestinal tract. This study aimed to analyze the possibility of performing concurrent colonoscopy when it is indicated and whether this may affect endoscopic and histological findings. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred and two patients who underwent EGD and colonoscopy (Group CC) at the same time due to dyspeptic symptoms and 146 patients who underwent EGD alone (Group EA) at SBU Kartal City Hospital between December 2020 and December 2021 were included in the study. All gastric biopsies were taken by the Sydney system. The specimens were assessed in terms of helicobacter pylori positivity, inflammation, neutrophilic activity, intestinal metaplasia, and lymphoid aggregate. RESULTS Helicobacter pylori positivity was 46.5% and 50.7% (p=0.521), inflammation was 93.1% and 98.6% (p=0.023), neutrophilic activity was 50.0% and 65.8% (p=0.013), intestinal metaplasia was 20.6% and 24.0% (p=0.531), and the presence of lymphoid aggregate was 46.1% and 58.9% (p=0.046) in Group CC and Group EA, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The present study comparatively evaluated the histopathological findings of patients who underwent EGD due to dyspeptic symptoms and those who underwent bidirectional endoscopy. Notably, no false positive results were observed that would necessitate a change in the treatment applied to the patients.

Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the mid-term results of patients who underwent medial pivot total knee arthroplasty at a single center. A total of 304 knees of 236 patients (40 males, 196 females; mean operation age and standard deviation : 66,64 ±7,09 years; range, 45 to 82 years) treated with medial pivot total knee prosthesis in our center between January 2010 and December 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. The American Knee Society Score, Oxford Knee Score, and especially flexion angles were recorded during pre- and postoperative follow-up. Of the operated knees, 71.2% were unilateral and 28.8% were bilateral. The mean follow-up was 79.30±14.76 months. The postoperative results with the Functional Score, Knee Score, Oxford Score, Total Knee Society Score, and flexion angles were significantly higher compared to baseline (p<0.01). All postoperative scores were significantly lower inpatients aged ≥65years, compared to those aged <65 years (p<0.01). In patients who underwent resection of anterior and posterior the cruciate ligaments, only the mean flexion angles were found to increase (p<0.01). Our study results suggest that medial pivot knee prostheses are reliable in the mid-term and provide favorable results in terms of function and patient satisfaction. Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the retina by optic coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in patients with migraine with aura (MA) in comparison with healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 60 patients with MA and 56 control subjects who applied to the Ophthalmology Clinic of Dicle University between January 2020 and February 2020 were included in this study. In all patients, the vascular density (VD) of the radial peripapillary capillaries (RPCs) and optic nerve head (ONH), the VD of deep and superficial macular vascular networks, and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) were measured. RESULTS Patients with MA showed reduced VD measurements of the nasal and inferotemporal ONH, inferonasal RPCs, and deep macular plexus. No statistically significant difference was observed in the superficial macular VD values between the study groups. The majority of patients with MA showed hypertrophy in the deep FAZ. CONCLUSION There was a decrease in VD measurements in the deep macular capillary plexus, ONH, and peripapillary capillaries and hypertrophy in the deep FAZ in patients with MA. According to these results, patients with MA may have an increased risk of developing ocular and systemic vascular complications. Therefore, OCTA can be used to evaluate systemic and ocular hypoperfusion in patients with MA.

Abstract
AIM To analyse the effect of systemic inflammatory status in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) by calculating platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). METHODS This retrospective case-control study included 200 patients with POAG, 22 patients with PACG and 100 healthy subjects. The participants' white-blood-cell, lymphocyte, neutrophil, and platelet counts were recorded from previous blood assays. NLR and PLR were calculated manually. Results were compared among the groups. RESULTS Both the POAG and PACG groups had higher platelet counts and PLR values than the control group (p=0.001 and p=0.001; respectively). The difference in NLR between POAG, PACG and control groups was not statistically significant (p=0.076). The POAG group had higher NLR values than the control (p=0.035). CONCLUSION Both the POAG and the PACG groups exhibited higher platelet and PLR levels than the control. These results indicate a potential role of systemic inflammation in the pathogenesis of POAG and PACG (Tab. 4, Fig. 1, Ref. 35).

Abstract
OBJECTıVE: The goal of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of oral spironolactone in patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). MATERıALS AND METHODS: In our study, acute CSC patients were divided into two groups: those who received spironolactone 25mg twice a day as the study group, and those who were not treated as the control group. Fundus fluorescein angiography was performed in all patients. Subretinal fluid (SRF) height and central macular thickness (CMT) spectral area were measured by optical coherence tomography as well as subfoveal choroid thickness (CT) in enhanced depth imaging (EDI) mode. The best-corrected visual acuity (BVCA) was measured with the Snellen chart. Side effects of spironolactone were evaluated. RESULTS: There were 31 eyes in the study group and 28 eyes in the control group. The mean follow-up was 2.4±0.5 months. The average SRF height of 240.26±92.89μm in the study group decreased to 26.77±39.52μm (P<0.05) at the last follow-up. SRF height was completely improved in 18 eyes (58.06%). On the first evaluation, the mean CMT of 453.26±147.73 was reduced to 276.19±109.29μm at the last follow-up. (P<0.05). While the initial mean subfoveal CT was 482.10±86.36μm, it decreased to 427.10±83.32μm at the last follow-up (P<0.01). The mean baseline BCVA of 0.5±0.23 was increased to 0.9±0.16 (P<0.01) at the last follow-up. At the last follow-up, BCVA was 10/10 (1.0) in 21 eyes (67.74%). In the control group, the mean SRF height of 277.71±108.83μm was 172.96±93.88μm (P<0.05) at the last follow-up. The mean CMT in the control group was 464.5±131.14μm at the first evaluation and 349.82±111.45μm (P<0.05) at the last follow-up. The initial mean subfoveal CT was 487.93±88.9μm; at the last follow-up, it was 447.71±71.32μm (P<0.01). While the mean BCVA of the control group was initially 0.53±0.19, it was found to be 0.64±0.19 (P<0.01) at the final control. The decrease in SRF height in the 3rd month was significantly greater in the study group compared to the control group (P<0.01). However, the decrease in CMT at 3 months and an increase in BCVA were also significant in the study group compared to the control group (P<0.01). CT decreased significantly in the third month in both groups compared to the first month, but there was no difference between the two groups. In a patient who developed palpitations and nausea, treatment was discontinued because he could not tolerate oral spironolactone. CONCLUSıON: In our series, effective visual improvement and subretinal fluid resorption were achieved in acute CSC patients who were given spironolactone. Side effects are rare.

Abstract
Introduction Many factors could affect the supraspinatus (SSP) muscle after tendon rupture. We aimed to determine how infraspinatus and subscapularis tendon problems affect supraspinatus muscle atrophy associated with tears, in a retrospective cohort study conducted in a tertiary-level centre. Material and Methods Fifty-eight patients with a full-thickness SSP tendon tear who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study. They were evaluated for tear retraction, fatty degeneration, and other rotator cuff tendon pathologies. Supraspinatus muscle was assessed using the Goutallier classification, and its average area was also measured. Accompanying lesions of the subscapularis and infraspinatus tendons and degree of supraspinatus muscle atrophy were evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging. Results Our results showed that supraspinatus tendon tears ranged between 3mm and 41mm, and the estimated average cross-sectional area of the SSP muscle was 247.6mm2. Any degree of infraspinatus tendon pathology, ranging from tendinosis to full-thickness tears, was significantly correlated with the SSP muscle area (P < 0.05). The subscapularis tendon pathologies did not show a similar correlation. The interobserver and intraobserver reliabilities of the measurements were graded as excellent. Conclusion Impairment of any of the rotator cuff muscles may affect the other muscles inversely. Our study showed that all infraspinatus tendon pathologies and partial subscapularis tears affect and alter the SSP muscle belly. We suggest early intervention for supraspinatus tears to avoid further fatty degeneration, as muscle atrophy and fatty degeneration progress in combination with the accompanying lesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-term consequences of donor nephrectomy might be reduced kidney function, increased risk for cardiovascular disease, and impaired quality of life. The purpose of the current cross-sectional study was to evaluate the relationship between clinical, laboratory, and donation-specific outcomes of living kidney donors and systemic oxidative DNA damage. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study and assessed retrospectively pre- and postdonation data from 60 donors who donated between 2010 and 2015. Plasma malondialdehyde levels and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine/deoxyguanosine ratio (8-OHdG/dG ratio) were determined as oxidative stress markers. Catalase, carbonic anhydrase, and paraoxonase (PON) activities were measured as antioxidants. RESULTS Approximately 3 years after donation, the hypertensive donor ratio was 12%, and 11% of the donors had glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Mean serum urea (P = .001) and serum creatinine levels (P = .001) were increased; creatinine clearance level (126.2 ± 35.5 vs 94.6 ± 26.8, P = .001) was decreased in the postdonation period. There was a significant positive correlation between predonation serum urea and 8-0HdG/dG ratio (r = 0.338, P = .016) and predonation serum creatinine and 8-0HdG/dG ratio (r = 0.442, P = .001), while there was a significant negative correlation between serum creatinine and PON activity (r = -0.545, P < .001). CONCLUSION Our data have demonstrated that kidney donors exhibit increased oxidative DNA damage and decreased antioxidant activity. We propose that predonation serum creatinine is positively correlated with 8-0HdG/dG ratio and negatively correlated with antioxidant PON activity. This is the first study to demonstrate that plasma oxidative DNA damage increases in healthy kidney donors.

Abstract
To improve arthroscopic skills, the preferred means of training is cadaveric tissue, because this gives the most realistic scenario. A drawback of cadaveric training is that objective performance tracking and accompanied feedback cannot be provided due to the absence of a suitable system. The main criteria were that the system should be compatible with any cadaveric joint, be used with any type of instrument, easy to set up, and measure two critical parameters that reflect the task efficiency (task time) and safety (forces due to instrument–tissue interaction). This resulted in the development of a force measurement system which consists of a custom-made universal vice, a custom-designed six degree-of-freedom (DOF) force measurement table (FMT) coupled to a computer equipped with customized software to record the time and forces in all directions. The FMT was calibrated and able to measure forces in the range of 0–750 N, with an accuracy of 0.1 N. During two cadaveric training courses, measurements were performed with the FMT. It was observed that the acquired force data could discriminate between novices and experts or reflect a certain phase of a navigation task performed in a cadaveric cow and human knee. A distinct phase highlighted from the force measurements is the insufficient joint stressing of novices during navigation. This results in too small a joint space for inspection and forces the novices to readjust the stressing. As forces cannot be seen, the FMT can contribute to more efficient training by providing explicit cues on the exerted loads during training. This enables a more precise supervision of the trainees.

Abstract
The clinical diagnosis of a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is still subject to debate. Little is known about the contribution of each ACL bundle during the Lachman test. We investigated this using six fresh-frozen cadaveric lower limbs. Screws were placed in the femora and tibiae as fixed landmarks for digitisation of the bone positions. The femur was secured horizontally in a clamp. A metal hook was screwed to the tibial tubercle and used to apply a load of 150 N directed anteroposteriorly to the tibia to simulate the Lachman test. The knees then received constant axial compression and 3D knee kinematic data were collected by digitising the screw head positions in 30° flexion under each test condition. Measurements of tibial translation and rotation were made, first with the ACL intact, then after sequential cutting of the ACL bundles, and finally after complete division of the ACL. Two-way analysis of variance analysis was performed. During the Lachman test, in all knees and in all test conditions, lateral tibial translation exceeded that on the medial side. With an intact ACL, both anterior and lateral tibial landmarks translated significantly more than those on the medial side (p < 0.001). With sequential division of the ACL bundles, selective cutting of the posterolateral bundle (PLB) did not increase translation of any landmark compared with when the ACL remained intact. Cutting the anteromedial bundle (AMB) resulted in an increased anterior translation of all landmarks. Compared to the intact ACL, when the ACL was fully transected a significant increase in anterior translation of all landmarks occurred (p < 0.001). However, anterior tibial translation was almost identical after AMB or complete ACL division. We found that the AMB confers its most significant contribution to tibial translation during the Lachman test, whereas the PLB has a negligible effect on anterior translation. Section of the PLB had a greater effect on increasing the internal rotation of the tibia than the AMB. However, its contribution of a mean of 2.8° amplitude remains low. The clinical relevance of our investigation suggests that, based on anterior tibial translation only, one cannot distinguish between a full ACL and an isolated AMB tear. Isolated PLB tears cannot be detected solely by the Lachman test, as this bundle probably contributes more resistance to the pivot shift.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of mitomycin-C on the reduction of the formation of peritendinous fibrous adhesions after tendon repair. In 20 Wistar albino rats the tendo Achillis was cut and repaired using a modified Kessler technique. The rats were divided into two equal groups. In group 1, an injection of mitomycin-C was placed between the tendon and skin of the right leg. In group 2, an identical volume of sterile normal saline was injected on the left side in a similar fashion. All the rats received mitomycin-C or saline for four weeks starting from the day of operation. The animals were killed after 30 days. The formation of peritendinous fibrous tissue, the inflammatory reaction and tendon healing were evaluated. The tensile strength of the repaired tendons was measured biomechanically. Microscopic evidence of the formation of adhesions and inflammation was less in group 1. There was no significant difference in the tensile load required to rupture the repaired tendons in the two groups. Mitomycin-C may therefore provide a simple and inexpensive means of preventing of post-operative adhesions.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the presence of pathogenic mycoplasma species in the turkey population of Turkey. Tracheal samples randomly collected from a total of 624 apparently healthy meat-type turkeys at a commercial abattoir located in the north of the country were examined by culture and genus- and species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for mycoplasma. In the direct plating onto solid specific media, mycoplasma growth was observed from 1.4% (9/624) of the samples, which were confirmed to belong to the Mycoplasma genus by genus-specific PCR. Mycoplasma iowae (MI) and M. meleagridis (MM) were identified by the species-specific PCR from eight and one of the samples, respectively. However, genus-specific PCR amplification was obtained from 2.6% (16/624) of the samples which produced turbidity in the liquid media. Interestingly, these positive samples were different from those obtained from solid agar and mycoplasma growth was not observed when the broth samples were inoculated onto solid media. In the species-specific PCR analysis of the broth samples, MI, MM and M. gallisepticum were identified from twelve, two and two samples, respectively. The inconsistency between the results obtained from liquid and solid media raises questions about the efficiency of isolation procedures for mycoplasma and this warrants further investigation.

Abstract
The current study was carried out to assess the use of immunomagnetic separation-polymerase chain reaction (IMS-PCR) in direct detection of Brucella abortus and B. melitensis from soft cheese and to examine a relatively small number of field samples for the presence of these species. Two methodologies, one with IMS and the other without IMS, were employed for recovery of the Brucella species from cheese samples. IMS in conjunction with the PCR assay was determined to detect as low as 3x10(2) bacteria/mL, while the limit of detection with the other extraction procedure was 3x10(3) bacteria/mL. In the analysis of 40 cheese samples collected from various markets, only B. abortus was detected by PCR using both DNA extraction procedures in two (5%) samples. No positive results were obtained by culture and B. melitensis was not found in any cheese samples examined. The results suggest that this technique is promising owing to its pace and high sensitivity and should aid in direct detection of Brucella species from complex food samples.

Abstract
Traumatic false aneurysm of the femoral vein has never been reported in the English literature. The case is here reported of a footballer with a traumatic false aneurysm of the common femoral vein which was initially misdiagnosed as an arterial pseudoaneurysm. This is a very rare clinical condition, but this diagnosis should be among those considered for post-traumatic unexplained thigh pain after trauma.

Abstract
This study was carried out to determine the prevalence and distribution of tropical theileriosis in cattle in eastern Turkey by microscopical, serological and molecular methods. A total of 1561 whole blood, 1505 serum and 1483 blood smear samples were collected from cattle of various breeds and ages in 11 towns of Eastern Turkey. Theileria annulata piroplasm DNA extracted from cattle blood was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using species-specific primers. Serum antibodies against T. annulata were investigated by indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT). Blood smears were examined for Theileria piroplasms by microscopical examination (ME). In the examination of DNA extracted from 1561 blood samples, an amplicon with the size of 721bp was obtained in 37.8% (590/1561) of these samples. Serum antibodies against T. annulata and piroplasm of Theileria spp. were detected in 34.9% (526/1505) and 19.7% (293/1483) of the samples, respectively. The differences between ME and PCR results and between ME and IFAT results were statistically significant (P < 0.05). In contrast, there was no significant difference between the PCR and IFAT results. A total of 179 ticks (136 female; 43 male) belonging to Hyalomma spp. were collected from cattle from three towns. Ticks were identified to be Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum on the basis of morphological features.

Abstract
The present study was carried out to investigate the presence of Chlamydophila abortus, the causative agent of ovine enzootic abortion, in milk samples collected from sheep flocks with and without the history of abortion in Eastern Turkey by means of immunomagnetic separation (IMS) in conjunction with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A total number of 201 milk samples collected from 10 flocks with abortion and four flocks without abortion were tested. In the analysis of the milk samples by IMS-PCR, correct amplification was obtained with three (1.5%) samples originating from one flock with abortion. In the digestion of PCR positive products by AluI, restriction profiles observed in all three samples were determined to be the same as C. abortus S26/3.

Abstract
Blood samples collected from 945 cattle at four local abattoirs in Turkey were examined for contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) by the complement fixation test (CFT) and competitive ELISA (cELISA). In addition, the carcases of the animals were examined macroscopically at the abattoirs and 62 lung samples which had lesions suggestive of CBPP were collected for bacteriological culture. To identify suspicious isolates the PCR was used in addition to the routine biochemical tests. By the CFT, two of the 945 serum samples were seropositive, and by the cELISA, four of them were seropositive. In the bacteriological culture of the lungs, growth was observed in 18 (29 per cent) of the samples by the observation of turbidity in the broths. However, when these broths were inoculated into an agar base, growth was observed in only three (4.8 per cent) samples. These isolates were identified as Mycoplasma species on the basis of biochemical tests. In the PCR analysis of DNA extracted from the broths, none of the isolates was identified as Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies mycoides small colony or one of the members of the M mycoides cluster, but amplification was obtained in only eight (44.4 per cent) of 18 samples, using Mycoplasma-genus specific primers. These DNA samples were examined further with primers specific to 16S rRNA and were then sequenced and compared with the databanks; DNA homologies at different levels were observed in five samples, with Mycoplasma alkalescens, Mycoplasma canadense, Mycoplasma bovis and Mycoplasma bovigenitalium.

Abstract
Nosocomial infections are one of the most feared complications after open heart surgery. A large retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the nature and scope of the problem. Between 1992 and 1998, 9352 patients who had undergone open heart surgery were evaluated. Bloodstream infections, pneumonia, and deep sternal wound infections were included. Univariate and logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the high-risk patients that were likely to become infected. Three hundred forty-six infections in 276 patients were diagnosed. Age, preoperative albumin level, banked blood requirement, duration of operation, diabetes mellitus, previous open heart surgery, moderate or severe pericardial adhesions, obesity, postoperative low cardiac output, and postoperative cerebrovascular accident were found to be significant in univariate and logistic regression analyses for infectious outcome. Univariate analysis also revealed additional significant factors: fresh frozen plasma requirement, duration of cardiopulmonary bypass and cross-clamp, preoperative high levels of blood urea and glucose, presence of occlusive peripheral arterial disease, preoperative history of hypertension, and nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus. Methicillin resistant S. aureus was involved in 58.4% of the infections. Risk factors should be individualized for patients and every effort should be carried out to minimize infectious outcome.

Abstract
The SF-36 Health Survey is a patient self-administered general health status evaluation designed to measure the impact of disease on an individual's perception of his or her health. Five hundred forty-four patients with five common shoulder conditions (anterior glenohumeral instability (149 patients), complete reparable rotator cuff tear (111 patients), adhesive capsulitis (100 patients), glenohumeral osteoarthritis (67 patients), and impingement (117 patients)) completed the SF-36 Health Survey before undergoing treatment. When compared with U.S. general population norms, the patients with each of these shoulder conditions had statistically significant decreases in their health for Physical Functioning, Role-Physical, Bodily Pain, Social Functioning, Role-Emotional, and the Physical Component Summary as measured by the SF-36 Health Survey. Comparison with published data demonstrated that these shoulder conditions rank in severity (in terms of affecting a patient's perception of his or her general health) with five major medical conditions (hypertension, congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, diabetes mellitus, and clinical depression). The data presented in this study should serve as a baseline to document the impact of shoulder musculoskeletal conditions and possibly to allow comparison among various methods of operative and nonoperative treatment.

Abstract
The reusability of disposable plastic trocars after high-level disinfection by alkalinized 2% glutaraldehyde solution was examined in a prospective study from the point of view of infection risk in order to determine the safety and economic benefits. For this purpose, 45 laparoscopic cholecystectomy cases were analyzed microbiologically and clinically. In 30 cases, trocars subjected to 15 min of disinfection by glutaraldehyde were used. In the remaining 15 cases, new trocars were used and a control group was established. In total, eight culture samples were taken from trocars, laparoscope (as it is disinfected by the same method), glutaraldehyde solution and umbilicus of the patients preoperatively; and from the bile in the gallbladder, peritoneal lavage fluid, and epigastric and umbilical incisions postoperatively. Only one of the disinfected trocars yielded a culture-positive result. No culture-positive results were found in the samples taken from laparoscope, glutaraldehyde, and epigastric incisions. Culture-positive results were obtained in 11 cases at the umbilicus, in one case at the peritoneal lavage and in one case at the umbilical incision. None of the patients had infection at the wound site or intra-abdominally. In conclusion, we have shown that disposable plastic trocars subjected to high-level disinfection can be reused safely without infection risk and that cost can be reduced.

Abstract
The treatment of Pott's disease remains controversial. The authors present two cases of spinal tuberculosis treated with posterior stabilization and supplementary abscess evacuation via the pedicular route with subsequent chemotherapy. The aim of this procedure was to increase the healing rate. Radiographic evidence of bone healing without any sequelae was demonstrated at 13 and 14 months.

Abstract
The accuracy of screw placement was assessed with postoperative computed tomography (CT) scans in 75 consecutive patients treated with transpedicular screw fixation. The pedicular screws (n = 379) were inserted at levels ranging from thoracal (T-8) to sacral (S-2) vertebrae using different systems. Most of the screws (90%) were correctly placed in the pedicle. Ten screws (3%) were inserted medially into the spinal canal. Only 1 screw caused root compression symptoms. Screw misplacement lateral to the pedicle occurred in 18 cases (5%), 9 screws (2%) were inserted superior to the pedicle. No important complications developed that were related to the misplaced screws.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN The authors employed a new mode of treatment for spinal tuberculosis consisting of single stage posterior instrumentation and fusion without anterior debridement. Ten patients were operated upon in this manner. Chemotherapy was instituted 2 weeks preoperatively and continued for a mean period of 11 months. Cotrel-Dubousset or a comparable system was used for fixation. OBJECTIVES Patients were followed for 3 monthly intervals with serial anteroposterior and lateral x-rays, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, physical examination, and patients' self reports. The mean follow up period was 24.2 months (range, 17-36 months). METHODS Measurement of kyphosis angle in the lateral x-ray view was used to evaluate treatment. RESULTS Only a 3.4 degrees mean loss of correction was observed over the follow-up period. All patients were satisfied. CONCLUSION Our results show that posterior rigid fixation and chemotherapy provide satisfactory stabilization, reduce surgical morbidity, and prevent development of late kyphosis in selected patients with Pott's disease of the thoracolumbar spine.

Abstract
36 patients with 157 inserted pedicular screws are presented. The patients are evaluated in 5 different groups; group I: fractures, group II: spinal tuberculosis, group III: spinal tumours, group IV: spondylolisthesis and group V: scoliosis. The mean age and the mean follow-up of the groups are respectively 42 years and 10.8 months. Cotrel-Dubousset instrumentation (CD), Alici Instrumentation, Fixateur Interne (Dick) or Steffee plate are used to stabilize the spine. The low complication rate of pedicular screw insertion is related to the used technique.

Abstract
This study was done on the outpatients and hospitalized patients who were suffering from urinary tract infections in Türkiye Yüksek Ihtisas Hospital. 500 positive cultures were evaluated. E. coli was the predominant organism and it is followed by Klebsiella and Coliform bacteria. The sensitivity of the isolated bacteria were tested against various antibiotic discs using disc diffusion method. The sensitivity of the bacteria to the used antibiotics were as follows: Ceftazidime 96%, ofloxacin 95.6%, piperacillin 56.4%, amoxycillin + clavulanic acid 81.2%, amikacin 82.2%.
