Impact of medium-distance pollution sources in a Galician suburban site (NW Iberian peninsula)

This work studies airborne quality in a geographical area that has not been investigated broadly: a suburban site nearby A Coruña (Galicia, NW Iberian Peninsula). In contrast to major Spanish cities, the site has Atlantic characteristics: rainy, scarce calm weather and infrequent prolonged sunny periods. The relationships between several gaseous pollutants (NO, NO2, NOx, CO, O3, PM10, PM2.5 and PM1) and their temporal trends (daily, monthly and seasonal) were evaluated. The aim was to unravel whether medium- and long-distance sources were impacting upon the site. Univariate studies focused on factorizing the pollutants according to a codifying factor (wind direction, hour of the day, season and month). Multivariate studies (Varimax-rotated factorial analysis) were done separately on both weekdays and weekends. The intensity of the daily maxima for NO, NO2, NOx and CO was lower during the weekends, with O3 behaving opposite. PM average values agreed with previous historical reports for a rural background station relatively close to the site and they decreased daily between 11:00 and 19:00 h, likely because of the marine breeze. With moderate wind speeds the pollutants were associated to medium-distance pollution sources, mainly the city of A Coruña and a combination of industrial pollution sources (a power plant, a solid waste incinerator and a regional airport).

Development of a web-based support system for both homogeneous and heterogeneous air quality control networks: process and product

The Environmental Laboratories Automation Software System or PALMA (Spanish abbreviation) was developed by a multidisciplinary team in order to support the main tasks of heterogeneous air quality control networks. The software process for PALMA development, which can be perfectly applied to similar multidisciplinary projects, was (a) well-defined, (b) arranged between environmental technicians and informatics, (c) based on quality guides, and (d) clearly user-centred. Moreover, it introduces some interesting advantages with regard to the classical step-by-step approaches. PALMA is a web-based system that allows 'off-line' and automated telematic data acquisition from distributed inmission stations belonging not only to homogeneous but also to heterogeneous air quality control networks. It provides graphic and tabular representations for a comprehensive and centralised analysis of acquired data, and considers the daily work that is associated with such networks: validation of the acquired data, alerts with regard to (periodical) tasks (e.g., analysers verification), downloading of files with environmental information (e.g., dust forecasts), etc. The implantation of PALMA has provided qualitative and quantitative improvements in the work performed by the people in charge of the considered control network.

Assessment of methodologies for airborne BaP analysis

Very sensitive analytical methods will be required to assess airborne contaminants with the implementation of new EC Directives. In this work, Soxhlet, ultrasonic and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) were applied to two airborne standard reference materials (SRM) 1648 "Urban Particulate Matter" and SRM 1649a "Urban Dust". All three techniques afforded satisfactory results, but MAE was preferred due to its low solvent requirement and speed of analysis. In addition, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet and fluorescence detection was compared to gas chromatography (GC)-flame ionisation detection (FID) with programmed split-splitless injection (PSS) and GC-mass spectrometry (MS) with programmed temperature vaporiser (PTV) injection. The HPLC method proved far more sensitive than the GC techniques (four and three orders of magnitude, respectively). Real atmospheric particulate samples were taken at A Coruna (Spain). Different sampling devices were used to collect PM(10), PM(2.5), PM(1), cascade impactor and TSP/gas phase samples. BaP concentrations quantified in the samples are similar to those reported for other cities.

Microwave assisted extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from atmospheric particulate samples

For several years, microwave assisted extraction (MAE) was applied to extract organic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls, etc., from soils, sediments and standard reference materials. Very few authors applied this methodology for the extraction of PAHs from atmospheric particulate matter. In the present study, MAE of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with hexane/acetone (1:1) from real atmospheric particulate samples was investigated and the effect of microwave energy and irradiation time studied. The yields of extracted compounds obtained by microwave irradiation were compared with those obtained using traditional Soxhlet extraction. MAE was evaluated using spiked real atmospheric particulate samples and two standard reference materials. Analytical determinations of PAHs were carried out by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet and fluorescence detection. The best recoveries were achieved with a microwave energy of 400 W and an irradiation time of 20 min.
