Competition between Polar and Nonpolar Lattice Distortions in Oxide Quantum Wells: New Critical Thickness at Polar Interfaces

Two basic lattice distortions permeate the structural phase diagram of oxide perovskites: antiferrodistortive (AFD) rotations and tilts of the oxygen octahedral network and polar ferroelectric modes. With some notable exceptions, these two order parameters rarely coexist in a bulk crystal, and understanding their competition is a lively area of active research. Here we demonstrate, by using the LaAlO_{3}/SrTiO_{3} system as a test case, that quantum confinement can be a viable tool to shift the balance between AFD and polar modes and selectively stabilize one of the two phases. By combining scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and first-principles-based models, we find a crossover between a bulklike LaAlO_{3} structure where AFD rotations prevail, to a strongly polar state with no AFD tilts at a thickness of approximately three unit cells; therefore, in addition to the celebrated electronic reconstruction, our work unveils a second critical thickness, related not to the electronic properties but to the structural ones. We discuss the implications of these findings, both for the specifics of the LaAlO_{3}/SrTiO_{3} system and for the general quest towards nanoscale control of material properties.

Functional electronic inversion layers at ferroelectric domain walls

Ferroelectric domain walls hold great promise as functional two-dimensional materials because of their unusual electronic properties. Particularly intriguing are the so-called charged walls where a polarity mismatch causes local, diverging electrostatic potentials requiring charge compensation and hence a change in the electronic structure. These walls can exhibit significantly enhanced conductivity and serve as a circuit path. The development of all-domain-wall devices, however, also requires walls with controllable output to emulate electronic nano-components such as diodes and transistors. Here we demonstrate electric-field control of the electronic transport at ferroelectric domain walls. We reversibly switch from resistive to conductive behaviour at charged walls in semiconducting ErMnO₃. We relate the transition to the formation-and eventual activation-of an inversion layer that acts as the channel for the charge transport. The findings provide new insight into the domain-wall physics in ferroelectrics and foreshadow the possibility to design elementary digital devices for all-domain-wall circuitry.

Electrostriction at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface

We present a direct comparison between experimental data and ab initio calculations for the electrostrictive effect in the polar LaAlO(3) layer grown on SrTiO(3) substrates. From the structural data, a complete screening of the LaAlO(3) dipole field is observed for film thicknesses between 6 and 20 uc. For thinner films, an expansion of the c axis of 2% matching the theoretical predictions for an electrostrictive effect is observed experimentally.

Endothelial dysfunction in cold type complex regional pain syndrome

The authors examined endothelial function in cold type chronic complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) I using acetylcholine- and sodium nitroprusside-induced vasodilation combined with laser Doppler flowmetry in 14 patients and 10 controls. On the affected side, acetylcholine-induced vasodilation was significantly reduced in comparison to controls and the unaffected extremity. No significant differences were found after application of sodium nitroprusside. The results demonstrate impaired endothelial function in chronic CRPS I.

Adatom-vacancy mechanisms for the C6)/Al111-(6 x 6) reconstruction

The irreversible (6x6) reconstruction of the C(60)/Al(111) system from the (2sqrt[3]x2sqrt[3])R30 degrees phase is studied by first-principles techniques. We find that C60 binds optimally to the surface if an Al vacancy is created directly underneath. The removed Al atoms form a (6x6) array of ad-dimers in the interstices below the C60 overlayer, to which they strongly bind. This spontaneous local process, rather than the compression state of the unreconstructed C60 overlayer, explains why one molecule out of three protrudes from the surface upon reconstruction.

Insulator at the ultrathin limit: MgO on Ag(001)

The electronic structure and morphology of ultrathin MgO films epitaxially grown on Ag(001) were investigated using low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. Layer-resolved differential conductance (dI/dU) measurements reveal that, even at a film thickness of three monolayers, a band gap of about 6 eV is formed corresponding to that of the MgO(001) single-crystal surface. This finding is confirmed by layer-resolved calculations of the local density of states based on density functional theory.

[Sudden infant death. An analysis of psychosocial conditions]

The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has been studied mainly in a medical-biological view. In this paper emphasis is put on the fact that SIDS is also a psychosocial phenomenon: As the infant exists in a continuous exchange with his environment, his death can be considered a reaction to extreme stress load including psychosocial factors. In proceeding from that concept, the social and psychological conditions of 94 mothers of SIDS cases have been analyzed and compared with 68 mothers of healthy infants of similar age, urban/rural relation, and social class distribution. Both groups differed considerably. The SIDS group was more "jeopardized" in any aspect. Probability to die seems to increase with the number of accumulated risk factors. The conclusions drawn can be utilized for prevention.

Liver tissue characterization using computerized echography

A digital echographic data acquisition and evaluation system was used in a clinical study including more than 100 patients with various local or diffuse liver tissue alterations. For diagnosis two decision methods are applied: first linear discriminant analysis and second a Bayesian method. Each A-scan is represented by a set of various numerical parameters from which only the most signal-distinctive ones are used for evaluation. The diagnostic results which will be presented and discussed have proved the method to be very sensitive and specific.

[Inlays as support for removable cast partial dentures]

On the basis of follow-up examinations in patients with removable cast partial prostheses, the author emphasizes the necessity of placing inlays as interlocks on abutment teeth, and he gives advice on inlay designs which are in conformity with prosthetic therapy.
