Vapour pressure of a fragrance ingredient during evaporation in a simple emulsion

The phase diagram water, phenethyl alcohol and laureth 4 was determined and the variation of the vapour pressure of the alcohol was determined during evaporation using gas chromatographic head-space analysis. The phase changes during evaporation were estimated from the phase diagram and compared to the appearance of the emulsion using optical microscopy. The transfer of the fragrance ingredient between different phases during the process was estimated and its measured vapour pressures compared to those calculated from values of earlier determination in different phases in the system. The agreement was good.

A study of molecular complex formation between propyl gallate and ascorbic acid in the microemulsion phase of sodium dodecyl sulfate, pentanol and water system

The association between two water-soluble antioxidants, i.e. ascorbic acid and propyl gallate have been studied by absorption spectroscopy in microemulsion formed in sodium dodecyl sulfate/pentanol/water micellar system. It has been shown that propyl gallate forms 1:1 molecular complex with ascorbic acid in every solution. Evolution of the absorption spectra during the study of molecular complex formation goes through well-defined isosbestic points. The association constants were calculated using curve-fitting procedure. The observed interactions are stronger in the less polar solvents.

Investigation of atmospheric oxidation of propyl gallate in an anionic surfactant system in the absence and presence of ascorbic acid

The antioxidant efficiency of two hydrophilic species, ascorbic acid (AA) and propyl gallate (PG), in an anionic surfactant system are studied. Ascorbic acid and propyl gallate are dissolved/solubilized in a microemulsion formed by water, pentanol, and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The determination of propyl gallate decomposition/oxidation kinetics shows enhanced oxidation of PG with increasing pentanol concentration in the system. When ascorbic acid and propyl gallate are both present in water, in surfactant aqueous solution, and in the studied microemulsion systems, the molecular complex AAPG is formed. After some time the complex decomposes.

Preliminary indoor radon investigations in Lublin region, Poland

Indoor air radon concentrations in all kindergartens and play schools in Lublin, Poland, were determined in grab samples by using alpha scintillation cells. In addition, some public buildings and homes in Lublin and several places in Eastern Poland were surveyed for radon. For kindergartens and play schools, the geometric mean was 23 Bq m-3 with a standard deviation of 1.4 Bq m-3, while in public buildings and homes, these values were 26 and 1.6 Bq m-3, respectively.
