Reversible metamorphosis from Fe 3O 4 to FeO of epitaxial iron oxide films grown on the Fe-p(1 × 1)O surface. RSC Adv 2021; 11:11513-11518. Abstract
The reduction and oxidation of epitaxial Fe3O4 films grown by reactive deposition on a Fe-p(1 × 1)O surface have been investigated by means of Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microcopy (STM). The as-grown iron oxide samples display a square LEED pattern with a lattice constant compatible with a p(1 × 1) bulk terminated Fe3O4(001) surface. STM topographic images of Fe3O4 are characterized by atomically flat terraces separated by highly oriented steps running along the (010) and (100) crystallographic directions of the substrate. Upon annealing at 800 K in an ultra-high vacuum, AES reveals that magnetite transforms to FeO. The sample exposes the (001) surface of the rock salt structure, with a lattice parameter close to that of bulk wüstite. The Fe3O4 phase can be recovered by oxidation at 10−6 mbar of molecular oxygen. The reduction and oxidation of epitaxial Fe3O4 films grown by reactive deposition on a Fe-p(1 × 1)O surface have been investigated by means of surface science techniques.![]()

Spin-Hall Voltage over a Large Length Scale in Bulk Germanium. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2017; 118:167402. Abstract
We exploit the spin-Hall effect to generate a uniform pure spin current in an epitaxial n-doped Ge channel, and we detect the electrically induced spin accumulation, transverse to the injected charge current density, with polar magneto-optical Kerr microscopy at a low temperature. We show that a large spin density up to 400 μm^{-3} can be achieved at the edges of the 100-μm-wide Ge channel for an applied electric field lower than 5 mV/μm. We find that the spin density linearly decreases toward the center of the Ge bar, due to the large spin diffusion length, and such a decay is much slower than the exponential one observed in III-V semiconductors, allowing very large spin accumulations over a length scale of tens of micrometers. This lays the foundation for multiterminal spintronic devices, where different spin voltages can be exploited as inputs for magnetologic gates on the same Ge platform.

Abstract
We review recent achievements in the field of nanoscale nonlinear AlGaAs photonics based on all-dielectric optical antennas. After discussing the motivation and main technological challenges for the development of an AlGaAs monolithic platform for χ (2) nonlinear nanophotonics, we present numerical and experimental investigations of the second-order nonlinear response and physical reasons for high efficiency of second-order nonlinear interactions in the AlGaAs nano-antennas. In particular, we emphasize the role of the dipolar resonances at the fundamental frequency and the multipolar resonances at the second harmonic wavelength. We also discuss second-harmonic generation directionality and show possible strategies to engineer the radiation pattern of nonlinear antennas.

Abstract
Manipulating light at the nanoscale by means of dielectric nanoantennas recently received renewed attention thanks to the development of key enabling fabrication tools in semiconductor technology, combined with the extremely low losses exhibited by dielectrics in the optical regime. Nanostructures based on III-V type semiconductors, characterized by an intrinsic broken symmetry down to a single elementary cell, has already demonstrated remarkable nonlinear conversion efficiencies at scales well below the operating wavelength. In this Letter, we thoroughly investigate the emission properties of second-harmonic generation (SHG) in AlGaAs monolithic nanoantennas. Our findings point toward the pivotal role of volume susceptibility in SHG, further unraveling the physics behind the nonlinear processes in these systems. The extremely high SHG efficiency attained, together with the control over the polarized emission in these nanoantennas, constitute key ingredients for the development of tunable nonlinear metasurfaces.

We demonstrate monolithic aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) optical nanoantennas. Using a selective oxidation technique, we fabricated epitaxial semiconductor nanocylinders on an aluminum oxide substrate. Second harmonic generation from AlGaAs nanocylinders of 400 nm height and varying radius pumped with femtosecond pulses delivered at 1554-nm wavelength has been measured, revealing a peak conversion efficiency exceeding 10-5 for nanocylinders with an optimized geometry.

Abstract
The spin features of surface resonance bands in single layer Bi on Ge(1 1 1) are studied by means of spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and inverse photoemission spectroscopy. We characterize the occupied and empty surface states of Ge(1 1 1) and show that the deposition of one monolayer of Bi on Ge(1 1 1) leads to the appearance of spin-polarized surface resonance bands. In particular, the C 3v symmetry, which Bi adatoms adopt on Ge(1 1 1), allows for the presence of Rashba-like occupied and unoccupied electronic states around the [Formula: see text] point of the Bi surface Brillouin zone with a giant spin-orbit constant [Formula: see text] eV · Å.

Abstract
We investigated the room temperature oxidation of ultra-thin Ni and Cr films grown on Fe(0 0 1). In particular, we characterized the degree of crystallinity and the stoichiometry of the oxide layers and addressed the chemical stability of the interface with the highly reactive Fe substrate by means of low-energy electron diffraction and x-ray and UV photoemission spectroscopy. In the Ni case we detected, upon oxidation, the formation of a Fe(3)O(4) layer covering the Ni oxide, due to the diffusion of Fe cations towards the surface. At high temperature and in ultra-high vacuum conditions, the Ni oxide dissolved and the Fe oxide layer was reduced to FeO. In the Cr case, we observed the formation of a thin Cr(2)O(3) oxide layer, showing a diffraction pattern compatible with a defective γ-Cr(2)O(3) phase. A thicker Cr oxide layer could be produced by oxidizing the sample at 300 °C, at the expense of the incorporation of trace amounts of Fe cations.

Abstract
A remarkable enhancement of atomic diffusion is highlighted by scanning tunneling microscopy performed on ultrathin metastable body-centered tetragonal Co films grown on Fe(001). The films follow a nearly perfect layer-by-layer growth mode with a saturation island density strongly dependent on the layer on which the nucleation occurs, indicating a lowering of the diffusion barrier. Density functional theory calculations reveal that this phenomenon is driven by the increasing capability of the film to accommodate large deformations as the thickness approaches the limit at which a structural transition occurs. These results disclose the possibility of tuning surface diffusion dynamics and controlling cluster nucleation and self-organization.

Abstract
In polymer-metal oxide hybrid solar cells, an extremely careful engineering of the interface is required to ensure good device performances. Recently, very promising results have been obtained by functionalizing titanium dioxide (TiO2) by means of 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPy) molecules, showing the beneficial effect of these molecules on the interface morphology. This study investigates the nature of the interaction of 4-MPy molecules with the TiO2 surface by means of X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. In order to mimic the device processing conditions, our analysis is carried out on molecules adsorbed from solution on a nanocrystalline surface. According to our analysis, 4-MPy molecules (C5H5NS) are likely bound with the oxide through the nitrogen atom. The bonding precedes either via a covalent interaction with Lewis surface sites, or via hydrogen mediation, possibly in the form of hydrogen bonds. Interestingly, in the latter case, we also observe strong changes in the spectroscopic features attributed to the thiol group.

Abstract
We report the creation and real-space observation of magnetic structures with well-defined topological properties and a lateral size as low as about 150 nm. They are generated in a thin ferrimagnetic film by ultrashort single optical laser pulses. Thanks to their topological properties, such structures can be classified as Skyrmions of a particular type that does not require an externally applied magnetic field for stabilization. Besides Skyrmions, we are able to generate magnetic features with topological characteristics that can be tuned by changing the laser fluence. The stability of such features is accounted for by an analytical model based on the interplay between the exchange and the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions.

We present a confocal microscopy setup that is able to record magneto-optical hysteresis cycles separating the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetization components. This apparatus is based on a modified commercial microscope, where the light beam has been deviated from the cylindrical symmetry axis of the objective lenses by inserting a translating plate in the optical path. The instrument allows for the magneto-optical imaging with a lateral resolution of 600 nm at λ = 635 nm light wavelength.

Abstract
We demonstrate that a high degree of circular polarization can be delivered to the near field (NF) of an aperture at the apex of hollow-pyramid probes for scanning optical microscopy. This result is achieved by analyzing the dichroic properties of an annealed thin polymer film containing a chiral polyfluorene derivative, placed in close proximity to the optical probe. We also prove that the degree of circular polarization in the probe NF does not depend in a significant way on the shape of the aperture, at variance with the far-field behavior. These results demonstrate the feasibility of nano-optics applications exploiting circularly polarized NFs.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to characterize the expression of the KIT protein (CD117) in normal and neoplastic canine testes. Archival samples of normal testis (n=5), interstitial cell tumours (ICTs; n=10), Sertoli cell tumours (SCTs; n=10) and seminomas (n=10) were selected. Seminomas were subclassified on the basis of expression of placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP) as classical seminoma (SE; PLAP positive; n=5) or spermatocytic seminoma (SS; PLAP negative; n=5). In normal testes, KIT expression was observed in Leydig cells and in spermatogonia. All ICTs expressed KIT, but no SCT was positively labelled. Seven of 10 seminomas expressed KIT and these tumours were reclassified on this basis as SS (KIT negative) or SE (KIT positive). These findings are consistent with observations of SE in man where many of the neoplastic cells reach the stage of spermatogonia where PLAP expression is lost and that of KIT is maintained. It would therefore appear that immunolabelling for KIT expression is a more appropriate means of distinguishing between canine SE and SS.

Abstract
We propose a novel cross resonant optical antenna consisting of two perpendicular nanosized gold dipole antennas with a common feed gap. We demonstrate that the cross antenna is able to convert propagating fields of any polarization state into correspondingly polarized, localized, and enhanced fields and vice versa. The cross antenna structure therefore opens the road towards the control of light-matter interactions based on polarized light as well as the analysis of polarized fields on the nanometer scale.

An optical analogue of a quantum particle bouncing on a hard surface under the influence of gravity (a quantum bouncer) is experimentally demonstrated using a circularly curved optical waveguide. Spatially resolved tunneling optical microscopy measurements of multiple beam reflections at the waveguide edge clearly show the appearance of wave packet collapses and revivals (either integer and fractional), corresponding to the full quantum regime of the quantum bouncer.

Abstract
The charge density in solids is a fundamental parameter. Here we demonstrate that the charge density can be determined by the use of angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The method, which involves a Fourier-like transform from momentum space to real space, is demonstrated by utilizing soft x-ray angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to sample the complete three-dimensional Brillouin zone of copper. It is also shown that this can be done in an energy resolved way as to extract the charge density contribution from states of a particular energy.

Abstract
Human male reproductive disorders comprising testicular dysgenesis syndrome (TDS) have become more prevalent during the last 50 years. These disorders include cryptorchidism, hypospadias, decreased semen quality, and the development of seminomas. Based on experimental evidence, it has been suggested that environmental pollutants with oestrogen-like or anti-androgenic activities play a role in the pathogenesis of TDS. In humans, histological lesions associated with TDS have been well characterized; this includes seminomas as well as their precursors, carcinoma in situ (CIS) lesions. CIS are seminiferous tubules lined by gonocytes and are a sign of testicular maldevelopment. Such CIS have recently been described in canine species, and an increased frequency of testicular tumours in dogs has also been reported. In this study, we investigated the presence of TDS lesions in canine testes submitted to routine histological examination. Histological features considered typical of human TDS were observed in 8/38 dogs examined; as in humans, individual dogs presented with various TDS features with a range of severity. In all eight dogs, CIS and at least one of the histological feature of TDS was observed in combination with seminoma. These findings suggest that as in humans, TDS may predispose canines to develop testicular cancer. A larger study is needed to better evaluate the actual incidence of TDS in canines, its clinical consequences, and the possible underlying pathogenic factors.

Abstract
An experimental demonstration of a classical analogue of the quantum Zeno effect for light waves propagating in engineered arrays of tunneling-coupled optical waveguides is reported. Quantitative mapping of the flow of light, based on scanning tunneling optical microscopy, clearly demonstrates that the escape dynamics of light in an optical waveguide side-coupled to a tight-binding continuum is slowed down when projective measurements, mimicked by sequential interruptions of the decay, are performed on the system.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to provide an up-to-date estimate of the prevalence of canine testicular tumours, an earlier study (reported in 1962) having found a prevalence of 16%. Histological examination of both testes collected at necropsy from 232 dogs revealed that 62 (27%) had one or more testicular tumours, the total number of tumours identified being 110. Of these, 55 were interstitial cell tumours, 46 were seminomas, and nine were Sertoli cell tumours. The results suggest that, as reported in man, testicular tumours in dogs have increased during the past 40 years. Further studies should investigate the possible causative role of environmental pollutants.

Abstract
In the light of earlier human studies, 43 canine tumours diagnosed as seminoma were examined histologically with haematoxylin and eosin and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stains, and immunohistochemically with a monoclonal antibody against human placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP). Twenty tumours were positive for both PAS and PLAP and were therefore diagnosed as classical seminoma (SE). The other 23 tumours were negative for both PAS and PLAP and were therefore diagnosed as spermatocytic seminoma (SS). Tubules with carcinoma in situ (CIS) were present in the testicular parenchyma surrounding 15 SEs and nine SSs.

Abstract
We report experimental evidence for a transition in the interface coupling between an antiferromagnetic film and a ferromagnetic substrate. The transition is observed in a thin epitaxial NiO film grown on top of Fe(001) as the film thickness is increased. Photoemission electron microscopy excited with linearly polarized x rays shows that the NiO film is antiferromagnetic at room temperature with in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. The anisotropy axis is perpendicular to the Fe substrate magnetization when the NiO thickness is less than about 15 A, but rapidly becomes parallel to the Fe magnetization for a NiO coverage higher than 25 A.

Abstract
The role of oestrogens and their receptors (ERs) in prostatic growth and differentiation and in the progression of prostatic carcinoma has been well investigated in human medicine. In dogs, however, available reports on the expression of ERs in normal, hyperplastic or neoplastic prostates are few and controversial, or completely lacking. Three normal, three hyperplastic and nine neoplastic canine prostates were examined histologically, and immunohistochemically with a polyclonal antibody directed against human ERs. Evaluation of the percentage of immunolabelled cells was performed by digital image analysis. The study showed that ERs were expressed in the nuclei of epithelial and stromal cells in normal, hyperplastic and neoplastic prostates. All nuclei in normal and hyperplastic prostates were strongly and homogeneously immunolabelled by the antibody used. However, the percentages of immunolabelled nuclei in the nine prostatic carcinomas were greatly reduced, ranging from 36.34% to 66.73%. The severe loss of ER expression in canine prostatic carcinomas may account for the relative lack of differentiation of these tumours in the dog.

Abstract
Both canine and human seminomas are typically associated with leucocytic infiltration, the role of which remains poorly understood. In this study, leucocytes infiltrating 10 canine seminomas were characterized. Monoclonal antibodies directed against CD18, CD11a, CD11b, CD11c, CD21, CD3, CD4, CD8 and Major Histocompatibility Complex class I and II (MHC I and MHC II) were also employed. Infiltrating leucocytes were located around vessels, adjacent to the thin fibrous septa between neoplastic lobules, and were also scattered singly amongst neoplastic cells. The more profuse infiltrates often had the appearance of follicular aggregates. Immunohistochemically, all the samples showed generally similar results. Most of the infiltrating cells were positive for CD18 and CD11a. Infiltrating cells were mainly T lymphocytes (CD3+), particularly of the CD8+ subset. B lymphocytes (CD21+) were detectable in almost all infiltrates; in the follicular aggregates they were centrally located, whereas T lymphocytes (CD3+) lined the periphery. CD11c+ cells were always more numerous than CD11b+ cells, demonstrating that if macrophages and antigen-presenting cells (APCs) were well represented, monocytes and granulocytes were practically absent. Almost all of the infiltrating cells were positive for both MHC I and MHC II antigens and, in nine samples, a large number of neoplastic cells expressing MHC I were detected. A few neoplastic cells expressing MHC II were observed in seven cases. The presence of CD8+ lymphocytes, together with the large number of both infiltrating and neoplastic cells expressing MHC I, suggests that the lymphocytes mediate a cytotoxic reaction against the neoplastic cells. This hypothesis may underlie the favourable prognosis frequently associated with canine seminomas.

Magnetic dichroism and spin structure of antiferromagnetic NiO(001) films. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2003; 91:137201. Abstract
We find that Ni L2 edge x-ray magnetic linear dichroism is fully reversed for NiO(001) films on materials with reversed lattice mismatch. We relate this phenomenon to a preferential stabilization of magnetic S domains with main spin component either in or out of the plane, via dipolar interactions. This suggests a way to selectively control spin structures in 3d systems with small spin-orbit coupling.

Abstract
Intermediate filament expression in the canine prostate, unlike that in human prostate, is represented in the literature by only a few reports. In this study, the expression of cytokeratin (CK) and vimentin was examined in three normal canine prostates and 11 canine prostatic carcinomas. Monoclonal antibodies directed against vimentin, CK AE1/AE3, CK 18-8 (for luminal epithelial cells), CK 5, CK clone 8.12 and CK 14 (for basal cells) were employed. As in man, normal canine prostatic luminal cells were positive for CK 8-18. Basal cells were positive for CK 5 and CK clone 8.12 but, in contrast to findings in man, were negative for CK 14. Luminal cells were vimentin-negative, whereas in man they have been reported as vimentin-positive. The majority of carcinomas showed an undifferentiated histological pattern and all were positive for CK AE1/AE3 and for vimentin. Ten tumours were positive for CK 8-12, but six of them showed many cells co-expressing CK 14. Moreover, in two of these six cases a large number of neoplastic cells also reacted with CK clone 8.12 antibody, and in one of them co-expression of CK 5 was detectable. This co-expression, of luminal and basal cytokeratins, suggests a possible origin of the tumours from prostatic epithelial stem cells. Vimentin expression is an inconstant finding in human prostatic carcinomas; its almost uniform occurrence in canine carcinomas suggests a lesser degree of differentiation than in the human neoplasm.

Abstract
Between 1990 and 1993, 61 outbreaks of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) were reported in Lombardy, Northern Italy. In this study, gross pathological examination was carried out on 3129 slaughtered cattle, 716 of which (22.9%) showed typical CBPP pulmonary lesions. Single or multiple renal infarcts at different stages of development were observed in 88 (12.2%) of these 716 cattle. The kidneys of 77 cattle whose lungs showed typical CBPP lesions and were bacteriologically and immunohistochemically positive for the small colony type of Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies mycoides (M. m. mycoides SC) were selected and submitted to histological, immunohistochemical and bacteriological examination. Histologically, in chronic CBPP cases, infarcts were characterized by fibrosis, calcification of cortical tubules and tubular atrophy, accompanied by the presence of interstitial inflammatory infiltrates composed of lymphocytes, plasma cells and histiocytes. M. m. mycoides SC antigen was detected immunohistochemically in 65 (84.4%) of the 77 kidneys examined. The antigen was detected in the lumen of blood vessels and in glomerular cells. Immunolabelled interstitial cells and tubular epithelial cells were seen in chronic cases only. M. m. mycoides SC was isolated from the kidneys of 12 animals (15.6%) and more frequently in cases with renal infarcts. This study confirms previous observations that demonstrated a renal involvement in cases of CBPP. Moreover, the immunohistochemical results indicated that M. m. mycoides SC antigen was frequently detectable in different renal structures and cells in spontaneous cases of CBPP.

Plasma levels of GH and PRL and concentrations in the fluids of bovine ovarian cysts and follicles. Theriogenology 1998; 49:1377-87. Abstract
Prolactin and GH have been detected within the ovary, and it has become increasingly evident that they have a role as intrafollicular regulatory factors. The aim of the present work was to gain an insight into the elements influencing intraovarian GH and PRL in bovine species and to see whether cystic degeneration was accompanied by abnormal bovine GH (bGH) and PRL (bPRL) plasma patterns. We followed the relationships between plasma and ovarian fluid bGH and bPRL concentrations over an entire year in Friesian cows whose ovaries showed distinct types of structures. To assess the presence of bGH and bPRL within ovarian cells, we assayed selected ovarian structures by immunohistochemistry. The results demonstrated that: 1) plasma and ovarian fluid hormonal concentrations were independent, and their ratio was independent of the ovarian structure classes, subclasses and period of the year; 2) in the majority of the cows the concentration of bGH in ovarian fluid was no more than 80% of the level in plasma, whereas in about half the animals bPRL concentrations were higher in the ovary than in peripheral plasma; 3) mean bPRL concentrations in ovarian fluids were significantly higher in summer than in winter; 4) immunoreactive bGH and bPRL were present within granulosa and luteal cells. Thus, it is suggested that in the cow bGH and bPRL levels in the ovary might be regulated in some way independently of the pituitary.

Abstract
This paper describes four cases of canine rhinosporidiosis which occurred in Italy in 1994 and 1995. Four dogs with a history of exposure to the muddy environment of rice fields, developed respiratory signs. Rhinoscopy revealed nasal polypoid lesions with a characteristic gross appearance due to the presence of multiple, tiny, white-yellowish spots representing sporangia filled with spores. In cytological samples obtained by brushing, many spores were present in an inflammatory background. Histologically, the polyps consisted of fibrovascular tissue embedding sporangia in different developmental stages, and free spores which elicited a severe pyogranulomatous inflammation. All the dogs were treated surgically and the condition did not recur in two cases during a year's follow-up and in the other two cases during two years.

Growth hormone but not prolactin concentrations in the fluid of bovine ovarian cysts are related to the cystic stage of luteinization. Theriogenology 1996; 46:481-9. Abstract
Regulation of follicular growth and ovulation as well as steroid production by the ovary depends principally on gonadotropins. However nonsteroid systemic hormones and autocrine and paracrine factors contribute to the regulation of ovarian function. The objectives of the present work were 1) to asses the presence of growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) in fluid drawn from normal bovine ovarian follicles, cysts or cystic corpora lutea; 2) to relate the stage of luteinization of the cyst with the GH and PRL concentrations in fluids; and 3) to asses the feasibility of providing a defined nonsteroid hormone marker to distinguish between normal and pathological ovarian structures. Cysts were classified according to histological and morphological appearance as follicular or luteal. Concentrations of GH, PRL, estrogens (E2), progesterone (P4) and testosterone (T) were measured in follicular and cystic fluids. On the basis of the E2 to P4 ratio, ovarian formation classes were further divided into two subclasses (E2 dominant and P4 dominant). The results provide evidence of 1) the presence of immunoreactive GH and PRL in all the follicular and cystic fluids assayed, 2) an increasing concentration of GH correlated to the stage of luteinization of the cyst and a direct correlation between GH and P4 concentrations, 3) a significant variability of intraovarian fluid PRL concentration not related to the histological class of the cyst nor to the concentrations of steroid hormones examined, and 4) the possibility of distinguishing 6 different ovarian formation classes by merely measuring GH, P4, E2 and T concentrations in fluids. These data contribute to a better understanding of the endocrine milieu of bovine ovarian cystic degeneration.

Abstract
The brains of 7 dogs aged 6 to 18 years have been histochemically and immunohistochemically investigated at the light- and electron microscopy levels for preamyloid deposits and amyloid fibrils to verify the hypothesis that the accumulation of cleavage products of amyloid precursor protein is related not only to Alzheimer's disease but also to the normal aging of the brain. Preamyloid deposits were detected in the neuropil of the cerebral cortex and neostriatum, whereas amyloid fibrils were found in the walls of parenchimal and leptomeningeal vessels. The densities of preamyloid deposits in the neuropil and of deposits of amyloid fibrils in the vessel walls were higher in the brains of the most aged dogs. These findings suggest that aging of the canine brain is characterized by an accumulation of intermediate cleavage products of the amyloid precursor protein in both the neuropil and the vessel walls, and by processing of these products to amyloid fibrils in the vessel walls.

Adenoviral fibrinous enteritis in calves. DTW. DEUTSCHE TIERARZTLICHE WOCHENSCHRIFT 1989; 96:165-8. [PMID: 2540945] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 01/01/2023]
Abstract
Two calves coming from different herds showed at post-mortem examination a fibrinous enteritis with mucosal necrosis particularly in the ileal-colonic tract. Histologically, amphophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were the main feature. They were located in the endothelial cells of the intestine and mesenteric lymph cells. Ultramicroscopic examination of the inclusion bodies revealed the presence of an adenovirus. In one case the virus was isolated on cell cultures and further classified as bovine adenovirus type 4.

Abstract
Two sublines of the ovarian reticular cell sarcoma M5 in C57BL mice respond differently to cyclophosphamide and other alkylating agents. The subline R16, which is resistant to cyclophosphamide, was obtained by treating M5 mice repeatedly with this compound and subsequently transplanting the regrowing tumor for 16 passages. The R16 subline shows biological characteristics perfectly superimposable to those of the parent line and histologically resembles an undifferentiated mesenchymal neoplasia with numerous atypical nuclei and karyokinetic figures with large necrotic areas. The cytogenetic examination of the distribution in the chromosomal number of R16 indicates that this subline may be considered a clone of the parent line with a modal class of 35 chromosomes (34-37) versus a class of 34 (31-37) in the M5 tumor line. The presence of metacentric chromosomes characterizes the modal class of the two lines, 23 in the R16, and 25 in the M5 tumor lines.

Abstract
The antitumor activity of mafosfamide (MFA), and its parent compound cyclophosphamide (CTX), was investigated against an ovarian reticular cell sarcoma growing i.m. in C57BI/6 mice (M5), which is very sensitive to CTX, and against a subline of this tumor (R16) resistant to CTX. MFA is the prototype of a class of oxazaphosphorines which do not require metabolic activation since under physiologic conditions they undergo rapid spontaneous hydrolyzation to the activated 4-hydroxyoxazaphosphorine and retain a spectrum of activity very similar to the parent compound. After a single dose (300 mg/kg × 1) or repeated low doses (100 mg/kg × 6) the antitumoral activity of MFA on the M5 tumor appeared comparable to or only slightly lower than CTX; the highest T/C value for median survival times was 167% in MFA-treated mice vs. 176% in the CTX group. MFA showed no activity against the R16 subline, thus indicating cross-resistance between the two drugs. Marked thickening of the glissonian capsule with compression of the lobular area of the liver, observed on i.p. administration of MFA, did not result in histopathologic abnormalities of the hepatic parenchyma. The therapeutic efficacy of MFA was similar with the i.p. and the i.v. route. MFA may represent a good candidate to replace CTX in cases in which a compound acting per se, and not through metabolites, is preferred.
