Abstract
The forensically important genus Thanatophilus Leach, 1815 (Coleoptera: Silphidae) is a widespread group of carrion beetles that occupies the Holarctic and Afrotropical realms. It has recently received more recognition, as its species are frequently detected on large carrion, including humans, and can be useful in estimating the time of colonization (TOC) and the post-mortem interval (PMI). The immature stages of Thanatophilus sinuatus (Fabricius, 1775) were reared on three different meat diets (pork liver, pork muscle, and chicken muscle). Diet influence on some of the essential life history traits of the species was examined for different populations. Our findings indicated an accelerated development on pork muscle followed closely by pork liver and a prolonged development on chicken muscle. The diet significantly affected the size, and the body condition (weight/ size) as both pork muscle and liver produced individuals in better physical condition (larger and heavier). The impact of two cyclic photoperiod regimes (16 h Light (L): 8 h Dark (D) and 12 h L: 12 h D) was further evaluated and indicated no significant variability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Early diagnosis of the appendiceal carcinoid during first trimester of pregnancy. DESIGN Case report. SETTING Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Merciful Brothers Hospital, Brno. METHODS Own observation, review of literature. CONCLUSION In case of unclear clinical or intraoperative finding, the appendectomy may reveal a serious disease. Thorough examination of the appendix should be a part of every gynaecological operation.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The incidence of geriatric fractures (proximal femur, distal radius, proximal humerus and thoracolumbar spine injuries) in the population increases with ageing. However, the role of weather conditions, such as icy and slippery winter, should not be overlooked. A deeper insight into this relationship may bring about a better understanding of the fracture aetiology and thus allow for improvement in the prevention of fractures in elderly people. MATERIAL AND METHODS This prospective study included 676 patients (469 women and 207 men) aged 65 and over. Relationships between the incidence of geriatric fractures in these patients and the season, weather phenomena (i.e., air temperature, atmospheric pressure, air humidity, wind speed, visibility, rain, snow, mist and storm) and global biometeorological data in the period from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2013 were investigated. Patients with high velocity trauma or those with pathological fractures were excluded. Time (day/night), the place of injury (outdoor/indoor/home environment), comorbidities and chronicuse medication were also recorded. Weather forecast records with weather health loads (biotropic indices) were obtained from the commercial service Weather Underground and the Czech Hydrometeoro-logical Institute. The results were statistically analysed using the Statistika 12 programme. RESULTS The incidence of fractures was higher in winter months but there was no statistically significant correlation between the number of fractures and various weather characteristics (temperature, atmospheric pressure, air humidity, wind speed, visibility, rainfall, snow, mist or storm). On the other hand, a relationship between the incidence of geriatric fractures and the biometeorological data (biotropic index) for that day was significant (r = 0.65, p= 0.0401). The majority of fractures occurred during the daytime (83.7%) and in the indoor environment (83.1%); of the latter fractures, 85.2% were home injuries. The most frequent comorbidities included cardiovascular disease (36.2%), obesity (31.1%) and diabetes mellitus (25.4%). DISCUSSION Studies investigating seasonal patterns in relation to the incidence of geriatric fractures are contradictory. Sixteen previous studies have examined seasonal variations and the incidence of some types of geriatric fractures in different parts of the world. The majority of them have dealt with hip fractures, three with forearm injuries and one compared the incidence of hip, distal forearm, proximal humerus and ankle fractures in the four seasons of the year. Of 13 studies in geographic areas located north of 40°latitude, eight showed no seasonal variation in the incidence of fractures, four recorded an increase in the number of fractures in winter and two showed an increased number of fractures in summer. Three of them also studied the effect of daily temperature. Only one study paid attention to biometeorological data and related the biotropic index to the number of injuries treated at the emergency department. Three studies showed that fractures occurred most frequently in the home environment and during the daytime. CONCLUSIONS This study did not prove any statistically significant relationship between the incidence of geriatric fractures and different weather phenomena. Nevertheless, it showed a higher incidence of fractures in winter, from December to February. Most fractures occurred in indoor environments and during the day. A high value of the biotropic index was significantly related to the incidence of geriatric fractures. The most frequent comorbidities included cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes mellitus. Abstract
Physiological function of a prion protein (PrP) is not known yet. Regarding the relation of PrP to heavy metals it is known that PrP is able to bind divalent ions of copper, zinc, manganese and nickel through its octarepeat region. It has been hypothesized but not yet confirmed that PrP could play a role in copper metabolism. In this study, cells expressing human full-length PrP (HuPrP1) and PrP-knockout (PrP0/0/1) cells were incubated with various concentrations of copper, zinc, manganese and nickel for 4 days and then were assayed for intracellular content of these metals and cell viability. The results showed that HuPrP1 cells accumulated less heavy metals than PrP0/0/1 cells when concentrations of heavy metals exceeded physiological level. In conclusion, HuPrP1 cells are more resistant to chronic overload with copper, manganese, zinc or nickel than PrP0/0/1 cells. The resistance to metals overload is caused solely by the presence of PrP, since HuPrP1 and PrP0/0/1 cells differ only in the expression of PrP. These results indicate that one of the functions of PrP can be the modulation of trace heavy metal concentrations in cells and protection of cells against heavy metals overload and subsequent oxidative stress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the single center experience in the treatment of patients with AAA. METHODS 586 patients undergoing open resection (OR) and EVAR (2000-2009). The average age was 72.2 +/- 7.7 years. AAA diameter was 8.3 cm (range 5.0-13.1 cm). 451 (76.9%) patients had asymptomatic AAA, 135 (23.1%) RAAA. 448 patients (76.5%) suffered from various co-morbidities. 430 (73.4 %) OR, 156 (26.6%) EVAR and 52 (8.9%) one staged procedure (for concomitant diseases) was performed. RESULTS 30 days mortality rate of elective OR and EVAR was 6.2, resp. 2.9% (n.s.) versus 36.6% of RAAA (p < 0.0001). 30 days mortality rate of one staged and single procedure was 19.5, resp. 3.6% (p < 0.0001). 30 days morbidity rate was in the whole group 52.1% (80.7% in RAAA x 43.4% in asymptomatic AAA - p < 0.0001), in one-stage procedures 60.8% x 51.1% in single procedures - n.s., 45.1% in OR x 39.0% in EVAR - n.s. Redo procedures were significantly higher in EVAR x OR in the long-term period after primary procedure. 1-, 3-, 5-, and 8 years survival of patients with asymptomatic AAA and RAAA was 91.6, 85.9, 81.1 and 73.6%, resp. 54.9, 48.9, 45.9 and 43.5 years (p < 0.0001). 1-, 3-, and 5 years patients survival with single versus one staged procedures was 85.5, 80.5 and 71.0% versus 71.1, 68.0 and 74.6% (n.s.). 1-, 3-, and 5- years patients survival after OR or EVAR was 91.2, 87.1 and 80.6%, resp. 90.7, 79.9 and 74.6 % (n.s.). The significant influence on patients long-term survival had RAAA, age of patients, postoperative complications and one stage procedures. CONCLUSION High percentage of polymorbidity was the cause of the significant 30 days postoperative mortality of patients after OR. EVAR and OR have similar long-term results. One staged procedures should be used very carefully in selected patients due to the higher mortality rate and worse long-term patients survival.

Abstract
The authors present their results on the treatment of benign liver tumors. 65 patients were operated upon in the University Hospital in Pil-sen from 2000 until July 2006. Benign liver lesions were rather rare compared to malignant tumours, for which 273 patients were treated within the same period. The most often found benign -lesions were hepatocellular adenoma, focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) and hemangioma. Sometimes, it was not possible to make a correct diagnosis preoperatively. The surgical procedures used for benign tumours were mostly enucleation and non-anatomic parenchyma-saving resection (55.4 %). Morbidity in this group was 26.5 %, mortality 0 %.

Abstract
Classical surgical therapy of dilatation disorders of the aortic arch require extracorporeal circulation, selective brain perfusion and/or deep hypothermia and it is still associated with very high mortality and morbidity. Endovascular therapy has until recently indicated only been in cases when the disease did not affect the area of the origins of the main branches within the aortic arch. We are presenting a case report of a 68 year female patient with a vascular anomaly (arteria lusoria) and 2 pseudoaneurysms of the aortic arch between the origins of arteria carotis communis on the right and arteria carotis communis on the left, respectively between a. carotis communis on the left and arteria subclavia on the left, when we took advantage of a hybrid procedure in the therapy. The patient was treated by creating a new branching of the aortal arch using a prosthesis from the ascendant aorta and subsequently by an introduction of 2 stent-grafts to the aortic arch using femoral arteries.

Abstract
The dynamic coupling between heart rate intervals (RR) and ventricular repolarization (QT) is analyzed. The analysis is based on measurements of 11 patients with pacemaker. In each measurement, there are at least 4 abrupt changes of RR preset by the pacemaker. With such a protocol, RR changes are important and well defined while disturbing factors and noise sources (such as those related with motion of patient) are minimized. The QT/RR coupling was described by 3 parameters (a1, b2, b3) transfer function (TRF) selected on the basis of a statistical analysis of performances of different TRF models. We found that our model is by far the best in its class: with more parameters (higher order models) the residuals remain almost the same while the extra parameters display variability much larger than that of our parameters. For all measurements, our TRF model describes more than 70% of QT variability. Within the patient set, we found interesting differences concerning dynamic non-linearity (response times longer with decreasing RR intervals than with increasing RR).

Abstract
The present study proposed procedure for predicting an optimal left and right ventricular pacing interval delay (V-V interval). In 16 patients (heart failure, left bundle branch block, biventricular pacing) two methods (A and B) identifying optimal V-V interval were tested. Method A: predicted optimal V-V interval A (POVV-A) = electromechanical delay of the segment paced by left ventricle lead minus electromechanical delay of the segment paced by right ventricle lead. Method B: predicted optimal V-V interval B (POVV-B) = difference in the onset of aortic and pulmonary flows. Both methods were validated using echocardiography and right-sided heart catheterization. Cardiac output during POVV-A (4.6 l.min(-1)) was significantly better than that during POVV-A minus 20 ms (4.3 l.min(-1), p<0.01) and POVV-A plus 20 ms (4.3 l.min(-1), p<0.01), and than that during POVV-B (4.4 l.min(-1), p<0.05). LV dP/dt during POVV-A (818 mm Hg.s(-1), exceeded that during POVV-A plus 20 ms (717 mm Hg.s(-1),, p<0.05) and POVV-A minus 20 ms (681 mm Hg.s(-1), p<0.05), and that during POVV-B (727 mm Hg.s(-1), p<0.01). The time difference in onsets of myocardial deformation of left ventricle segment paced by the left ventricle and right ventricle lead allows identifying the optimal V-V interval and improves left ventricle performance.

Abstract
Inflammation is a key component of the immune system. It has important functions in both defense and pathophysiological events maintaining the dynamic homeostasis of a host organism including its tissues, organs and individual cells. On the cellular level it is controlled by more than 400 currently known genes. Their polymorphisms and environmental conditions give rise to different genotypes in human population. Pro-inflammatory genotype, which dominates in the present population, may be advantageous in childhood but not in elderly people because it is characterized by an increased vulnerability to, and intensity of, inflammatory reactions. These reactions may be the possible reasons of chronic inflammatory diseases, especially in old age. Better understanding of complex molecular and cellular inflammatory mechanisms is indispensable for detailed knowledge of pathogenesis of many diseases, their prevention and directed drug therapy. Here we summarize the basic current knowledge on these mechanisms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Liver surgery for liver malignancy is recently limited not by technical possibilities but by physiological reserves of liver parenchyma. Portal vein embolization (PVE) is performed to increase future liver remnant volume (FLRV) to extend the possibilities of liver resections. The authors evaluate the cohort of patients, that underwent PVE and confront them with the cohort of patients that underwent liver resection without PVE. METHODOLOGY At the Department of Surgery and Departement of Radiology, University Hospital Pilsen there were performed successfully PVE at 24 patients between January 2001 and August 2006. The increase of FLRV was sufficient at 17 patients. The mean period between PVE and computed tomography volumetry was 29 days. The mean period between PVE and surgical procedure was 54 days. 8 patients underwent radical liver surgery (right hepatectomy, extended right hepatectomy, combination of right hepatectomy with RFA in left lobe), 3 patients underwent radiofrequency ablation, the rest of patients was explored. For comparison we used cohort of 107 patients that underwent one step radical surgery for malignancy. RESULTS 1 year survival rate after liver operation was 85.7%, 3 years survival rate 42.9%. Disease free interval (DFI) was counted only for group of radicaly operated patients. One year DFI was 40%, two year DFI was 20%. The number of leasions was not proved as statistically significant for DFI or survival rate. In non PVE group 1 year survival rate was 78.9%, 3 years survival rate was 34.0%, one year DFI was 60.2%, two years DFI was 36.6%. DISCUSSION The survival rate was higher in PVE group, the DFI was shortened in PVE group. In our cohort we could conclude, the PVE increase survival rate instead of shortened DFI. PVE spreads possibilities for liver resections at patients with small FLVR and enables radical surgical therapy for patients, that will be leaved a palliative surgery or oncological therapy.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of senile dementia. There are 24.3 million people suffering from this progressive neurodegenerative disorder worldwide. A century ago, AD was characterized with regard to the clinical manifestations and pathology for the first time. Up till now, there is a lack of full understanding of the underlying causes and molecular mechanisms leading to this progressive form of dementia. The majority of AD cases occur sporadically, what suggested that they could arise through interactions among various genetic and environmental factors. Current epidemiological investigations show that midlife hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, obesity, inflammation, and viral infections can significantly contribute to the development and progression of AD, whereas active engagement in social, mental and physical activities may delay the onset of the disease. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is considered as the main genetic risk factor in the sporadic AD that is closely connected to lipid metabolism. Other genes involved in the disease pathways related to AD pathology in addition to cholesterol metabolism, neuroinflammation, amyloid and tau cascade, neuronal signalling, and plasticity are under investigation. In spite of the significant progress achieved, it is still not clear how genetic vulnerability and environmental exposures may contribute to the susceptibility of the disease. Therefore, understanding the role of disease-related risk factors for AD pathogenesis may help to identify specific modifiable risk factors that could provide possibility for the prevention of Alzheimer's dementia.

Abstract
Three cases of dissections of the thoracic aorta involving pelvic vasculature were managed in the Plzen surgical clinic during 2004-2005, using aortic fenestration technique. In one case, the procedure was urgent due to acute ischemia of an extremity. The other two procedures were planned procedures. The outcome of the three procedures was successful and no treatment complications were recorded.

Abstract
We analyzed the prion protein (PrP) genotype based on the codons 136, 154 and 171 and assigned to five risk groups (R1-R5) in healthy and scrapie-affected sheep in Slovakia. In healthy (asymptomatic) population, 119 Merino, 106 Improved Valachian, 117 Tsigai, and 48 Suffolk breeds were tested. Among the asymptomatic sheep, the low-risk genotypes R1 and R2 were most abundant in Suffolk (94%) and Merino (84%) breeds, followed by Tsigai (58%) and Improved Valachian (40%) breeds. The medium-risk group R3 was most frequent in Improved Valachian (31%) breed, followed by Tsigai (21%), Merino (10%), and Suffolk (6%) breeds. The occurrence of high-risk groups R4 and R5 was none in Suffolk breed, followed by Merino (6%), Tsigai (21%), and Improved Valachian (30%) breeds. Since 2003, altogether 48 cases of scrapie have been confirmed in Tsigai (38), Merino (4), Improved Valachian (2), Improved Valachian x Tsigai (3), and Suffolk (1) breeds. Among sheep with scrapie, Merino breed belonged to the medium-risk group R3. The majority of scrapie-affected Tsigai sheep were classified into high-risk R5 (50%) and medium-risk R3 (42%) groups. We showed an association of scrapie with medium- and high-risk groups of PrP genotype in Slovakia. In particular, the glutamine at position 171 appears to be of major importance for the susceptibility to scrapie.

Abstract
On three unusual cases of symptomatic abdominal aortic aneurysms, the authors demonstrate the need for satisfactory erudition of a vascular surgeon, who must manage the above serious conditions. In the first case, the authors deal with a symptomatic aneurysm of the abdominal aorta and a homolateral dystopy of the right kidney co-existence. In the second case, the authors describe a rare, nevertheless a very serious communication between a vein and an adjacent aneurysm. In the third case, the authors prefer the left-sided retroperitoneal approach in the management of the juxtarenal AAA in combination with a "hostile abdomen".

Abstract
BACKGROUND The STD problem emerged in the Czech Republic as a result of geopolitical and social and economic changes in the state. Prostitution is concentrated mainly around border areas with Austria and Germany, contributing to the increase in STDs. The Czech-German project "Jana," based on a project umbrella network of the WHO, was organised. OBJECTIVES To prevent STDs, including HIV/AIDS, and assessment of STD prevalence in the target group. METHODS Prostitutes working in night clubs and in the streets and roads of three districts in the West Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic bordering on Germany were studied. Interactions included street work, venereology check up, psychology and sociology counselling, psychological preparation on possible treatment, and continuous and regular contact. RESULTS The number of "love clubs" involved in project "Jana" increased from 46 in 1997 to 72 in 2000. Of 561 street girls registered in the project during 1997-2001, there was one HIV positive, every 11th prostitute had syphilis, and one in 93 women had gonorrhoea, whereas incidence of syphilis in the Czech Republic was 10.2/100000 and that of gonorrhoea 9.5/100000 inhabitants in 2001, 31 women had Chlamydia trachomatis urinary tract and genital infection, and 25 were HBsAg positives. STD frequency revealed in project participants significantly exceeds numbers of STDs in the other inhabitants of the Czech Republic. The majority of prostitutes were foreigners, mostly Ukrainians and Russians. CONCLUSION The situation in the border areas is alarming. The priority must be to concentrate efforts on prevention of spread of venereal diseases in borders of economically disparate states.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy is caused by muscular lesions and disorders of cardial rhythm and/or by cardiomyopathy. An autosomal dominant form is related to mutations of genes, which are coding for lamins A/C. GROUP AND METHODS In the group A the authors examined 37 patients with the diagnosis of dilatation cardiomyopathy (DKMP) and the mean ejection fraction 28.4; 8.8%. In the group B of 13 patients a cardiac stimulator was implanted for a rhythm disorder. Both groups were subjected to cardiological, neurological, clinical and electromyographic (EMG) examinations. A muscle biopsy from m. vastus lateralis was made and the sample was evaluated by histology, histochemistry and immunohistochemistry. The coding sequences of genes for lamins were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and the products were analyzed by the DHPLC method (denaturing higher performance liquid chromatography). RESULTS In the group A there was a clinically myopathic picture in three patients, while EMG examination revealed a myogenic finding in 12 patients and a marginally myogenic one in five patients. The histological finding in 12 patients was evaluated as myogenic and marginally myogenic in six. In one patient the mutation analysis revealed mutation in the gene for lamin A/C. A myogenic finding in this patient was determined by EMG as well as by histological examination and the autosomal dominant form of the Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy was therefore diagnosed. In the group B one patient displayed a myopathic neurological finding and a myogenic finding during EMG. A subsequent mutation analysis revealed a mutation in the gene for lamin A/C. The case was therefore the autosomal dominant form of the Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy. In the other patients the clinically marginal myopathic finding was observed once, a marginally myogenic finding during EMG was seen five times, histology and immunochemistry revealed a myogenic finding once and a marginally myogenic finding also once. The other findings were within normal range. CONCLUSIONS A careful neurological examination including EMG determined symptoms of skeletal muscle myopathies in a surprisingly high percentage of our cardiological patients. This observation draws attention to the need of neurological examination in patients with DKMP in order to discovered disorder in this area in time. In two patients mutations in genes coding lamins A/C were detected. It would be useful to analyze also genes coding for other cytoskeletal proteins in the future.

Abstract
In a worldwide majority of sheep breeds an excessive susceptibility to scrapie associated with the PrP gene alleles coding for valine (V; at the 136 codon) and glutamine (Q; at the 171 codon) (e.g., VRQ/VRQ, VRQ/ARQ, or ARQ/ARQ) was demonstrated. Particularly the PrPVRQ allele is closely associated with the high-risk development of the disease; the PrPARQ allele can also fulfill this function but under certain limited conditions. Polymorphism in the PrP gene sequences (conclusively related to the increased susceptibility of sheep to scrapie) of improved Valachian sheep from two Slovak regions, Orava and Spis, was determined. Examination of 735 sheep showed that ARR/ARQ was the most frequent genotype (45.2%). High-risk genotypes were determined in 32.4% of sheep (ARQ/ARQ 19.3, ARR/VRQ 9.0, ARR/VRQ 3.5, VRQ/VRQ 0.3, ARR/VRR 0.3). Low-risk genotypes were found in 67.7% of sheep (ARR/ARQ 45.2, ARR/ARR 10.9, ARR/AHQ 5.7, ARQ/ARQ 4.9, AHQ/AHQ 0.7, ARR/AHR 0.3). Despite the geographically distant flocks of improved Valachian sheep investigated no difference in the occurrence of individual PrP genotypes was observed.

Abstract
Impaired wakefulness in machine operators poses a danger not only to themselves but often also to the public at large. While on duty, such persons are expected to be continuously, i.e., without interruption, on the alert. For that purpose, we designed and carried out an experimental model of continuous vigilance monitoring using electroencephalography (EEG) and reaction time measured as the latency of the proband's reaction to sound. If constructed, the set together with other logical elements and an alarm can make for an automatic detection of vigilance and, possibly, also of arousal stimuli in cases of microsleep. We found the following new facts and confirmed the validity of some of the earlier ones: Vigilance is marked by alpha activity in the EEG record (oscillation of 8-13 Hz) and reaction time (RT) of 200-400 ms (milliseconds). Sleep is characterized by theta and delta activities (4-7 and 0.5-3.5 Hz respectively) with no reaction. Between wakefulness and sleep there are at least two stages: relaxation with prolonged RT of 400 to 800 ms and increased EEG alpha, sometimes also beta activities. Then there is the hypnagogic phase with disintegrating alpha and growing theta or even delta activities and an RT of 800 up to 1200 ms. Changes in the EEG and its spectrum and their actual localization on the cranial surface exhibit individual differences; hence, no straightforward categories for the above stages can be established. As for changes in vigilance in the relaxation and hypnagogic phases as well as in the processes of mentation, the most significant are the alpha and delta, less so the theta and beta bands. The most suitable sites for the detection of those changes on the skull surface are temporo-parieto-occipital (TPO) regions, i.e., those over the posterior parts of the skull with the least muscle and oculomotor artifacts and with the most energy for alpha and delta activities. In somnolence, the cortex does not behave as a whole, which means that different areas show different spectra while getting off to sleep, a fact easy to express by means of the alpha/delta ratio, separately for each of the cranial areas. At sleep onset, the alpha/delta ratio undergoes changes; it is greater than one in wakefulness, less than one in sleep, and in the region of one as the person goes to sleep. In the course of sleep with zero reactivity, the cortex already behaves as a whole, i.e., all cranial areas have similar or the same spectrograms, with the alpha/delta coefficient being less than one all over the skull. At times, the spectrogram taken during mentation (e.g., while undergoing psychological tests) resembles that of somnolence, with the alpha/delta coefficient being greater than one. However, there are differences: in somnolence, the delta activity is increased all over its band, i.e., from 0.5 to 3.5 Hz, while during mentation it is increased solely in the slow delta activity band (0.5 to 3.5 Hz). In somnolence, theta is on the increase, but not so in mentation. In the hypnagogic phase, alpha becomes completely extinct--unlike in mentation. As follows from the above listed facts, not everyone applying for an automatic alarm detector of vigilance can be provided with one at random and expect it to go off at the first sign of slumber. Conversely, every applicant ought to be treated as a proband, i.e., tested with simultaneous EEG registration, EEG analysis, determination of the best suitable area on the cranial surface and EEG frequency, separately for vigilance, relaxation, hypnagogic phase and mentation, and--in keeping with the above rules--have individual parameters of the alarm device adjusted accordingly.

Abstract
The first confirmed evidence of scrapie in Slovakia was demonstrated in one sheep of the autochthonous Merino breed from the southeastern part of the country. The reported scrapie was diagnosed during compulsory transmissible spongiform encephalitis (TSE) screening of sheep over 9 months of age assigned for consumption. The positive ewe was 5-year-old, which did not show any clinical signs of scrapie. The presence of the proteinase-resistant prion protein (PrP) in brain was proved independently by two laboratories using two different immunochemical screening systems, namely the Prionics Check (Western blot analysis) and Enfer TSE enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In addition, the genotyping analysis of PrP gene demonstrated the presence of PrP genotype from the high risk group R4. The affected sheep was homozygous for the allele PrP(ARQ) (ARQ/ARQ) coding for alanine (A), arginine (R) and glutamine (Q) at three most relevant codons (136, 154 and 171, respectively). The healthy sister of the positive ewe was heterozygous in the PrP locus and carried alleles ARQ/ARR.

Abstract
In the submitted review the authors present electrocardiographic record of patients with atrial, ventricular and dual-chamber pacemakers. They also describe specially ECG findings in complications of cardiostimulation. Recommended procedures in these situation: changing pacemaker programme or electric cardioversion or surgical solution--reimplantation of pacemaker generator and/or lead or implantation of second lead.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The aim of the study was to evaluate the contribution of basal and modify transcutaneous oxygen tension measurement (TcpO2) to diagnosis of ischaemia and indication of angiography in non-healing diabetes foot ulcers: METHOD 69 patients with non-healing diabetic ulcers localised on 76 legs underwent angiography (DSA) and basal and modify TcpO2 measurement after 100 % O2 exposition under normo- and hyperbaric conditions. CHARACTERISTIC OF PATIENTS: mean age 66 years (42 81), diabetes duration 14.3 years (1 - 36), glycated hemoglobin 7.9 % (+/-1,35). RESULTS Clinically important angiographic findings were obtained in 80 % (61/76) all ulcers. Basal TcpO2 < or = = 30 mm Hg was detected in 82 % diabetic ulcers with positive DSA (sensitivity - SN). The specificity (SP), positive and negative predictive value (PPV, NPV), relative risk (RR) and accuracy (A) of test were 60 %, 89 %, 47 %, 1.7 and 78 % respectively. TcpO2 with hyperbaric 100 % O2 was determined as the strongest predictor of ischaemia by statistical logistic regression. SN (91%), SP (77%), PPV (94 %), NPV (67 %, RR (2.8) and A (88 %) of test were increased (cut off 270 mmHg). CONCLUSION TcpO2 measurement contributes to the diagnosis of ischaemia in non-healing diabetic ulcers. Modify TcpO2 increases the test value.

Abstract
Ovine and caprine scrapie occupies a unique place among animal transmissive spongiform encephalopathies (TSE). It is an object of intensive biomedicinal, ecological and economical studies. Its causative agents are demonstrably associated with the development of TSE in farmed minks, goats and moufflons. Ovine strains of scrapie occurring in North America (particularly in the USA) differ from strains which occur in Europe and were present at the onset of development of TSE in three species of deer living in free nature and in captivity in the USA. The studies dealing with the development of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) of the English type have indicated justifiably that its origin is associated with one (or more) heretofore unidentified ovine strain. The development of a variant form, the Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease in humans, and transmission of the BSE agent to several families of bovidae, felidae and primates, puts stress on its zoonotic potential. All this leads to the conclusion that domesticated sheep are the decisive reservoir species of animal TSE. They have been infected to an unknown extent with the causative agent of BSE probably through contaminated meat-bone meal. The occurrence of natural ovine prion isolates with properties similar to those of the BSE agent requires that scrapie should be included in the surveillance of human and animal TSE. At present, scrapie is a noticeable disease also in other than European Communities Member States. It is on the list B of the International Epizootics Office. Many countries have initiated control of ovine scrapie. It should therefore become a topical question also in Central and Eastern European countries. Elimination or even eradication of ovine scrapie (or its causative agents) from populations of small and large domestic ruminants is the prerequisite for prevention of penetration of ovine pathogenic prions into the human feed chain. Moreover, it should be ensured that these species will be able to produce foods of a new type (immunotrition and similar) or proteins with therapeutic effects in the near future. Our study established that the PrP genotype of Valachian rams, the Slovak autochthonous breed, contains also VRQ and ARQ alleles encoding the susceptibility to scrapie. Their selection is part of the improvement of Slovak Valachian sheep towards resistance to scrapie.

Abstract
In various parts of the Northern hemisphere air-borne S exhibits a seasonality, with isotopically light (i.e., 32S-rich) sulfur predominating in the warm summer months. Such seasonality has been reported from the United States, Canada, Japan, and China. Elevated biological emissions of isotopically light S in summer, a temperature-dependent isotope fractionation accompanying the oxidation of SO2, and heavy rains in winter bringing 34S-rich marine S have been suggested as the controlling mechanisms. In the atmosphere of Central Europe, one of the most severely polluted regions of the world, we have found an opposite seasonal trend: Isotopically light SO2-S predominates in the cold winter months, whereas isotopically heavy SO2-S is typical of the summer. The low delta34S values of air-borne SO2 in winter are influenced by low-delta34S emissions from local coal-burning power plants. The coal contains isotopically light S (mean delta34S of 1.6/1000). Higher demand for electricity during the heating season leads to higher anthropogenic S emission rates in winter. On a yearly basis, atmospheric sulfate S in Central Europe is isotopically heavier than atmospheric SO2-S by 4/1000. Atmospheric oxidation of SO2 is accompanied by an isotope fractionation resulting in 34S-enriched sulfate. In addition to the seasonality in air-borne delta34S(SO2), we report also an interannual trend of 1/1000 yr(-1) toward isotopically light sulfate S in atmospheric deposition. This interannual trend cannot be explained by a change in pollution sources accompanying the present massive environmental cleanup. To investigate the role of biological S emissions from the soil of heavily polluted ecosystems, we conducted a series of laboratory experiments using repacked soil columns and 34S-enriched precipitation under summer and winter temperatures. These experiments indicate that, under summer temperatures, the 34S-labeled precipitation is largely captured by the upper organic-rich soil horizons, a high proportion (53-74%) of S input is revolatilized, and the biologically reemitted S is isotopically light. Under winter temperatures more precipitation S is leached to the bottom of the soil columns. Our experiments have shown that biological emissions in Central Europe can be sizable. Yet, they cannot be singled out in the overall SO2 isotope pattern in the atmosphere. The main reason is continuous, variable (0-4/1000), open-system depletion in 34S in the residual SO2 during the isotopically selective SO2-to-SO4(2-) conversion.

Abstract
We provide data on in vivo targeting of the Thy 1.2 (CDw90) cell surface receptor expressed on neoplastic T cells, mouse EL4 T cell lymphoma. The targeting antibody and the anticancer drug, doxorubicin (DOX) were conjugated to a water-soluble copolymer based on N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA) acting as a carrier responsible for controlled intracellular release of the conjugated drug. The in vivo therapeutic efficacy of HPMA copolymer-bound DOX targeted with anti-EL4 antibody, polyclonal anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG), monoclonal anti-Thy 1.2 antibody or its F(ab')(2) fragment was compared with the efficacy of DOX conjugated to HPMA copolymer containing nonspecific IgG or bovine serum albumin (BSA). Anti-EL4 antibody-targeted conjugate caused a significant retardation of tumor growth and an extension of the life span of treated mice. The effect was comparable with that of HPMA copolymer-bound DOX targeted with ATG, anti-Thy 1.2 antibody or its F(ab')(2) fragment. However, considerable antitumor effect was seen also in conjugates targeted instead of specific antibodies with syngeneic nonspecific IgG or BSA. Patients with advanced cancer are often immunocompromised due to dysfunction of their immune system induced by cancer and cytotoxic drugs. A significant decrease of unwanted side-effects of targeted drugs against a number of vital organs was already documented. In this study we have compared immunotoxic effects of free DOX with those of its antibody-targeted form on NK cells and cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTLs) isolated from C57BL/10 mice bearing EL4 T cell lymphoma. In the same model we have tested the combination therapy with immunomodulators (beta-glucan or AM-2) injected together with targeted daunomycin. We have observed a significant protective effect of targeted DOX against NK cells and CTLs. Moreover, the data revealed that combination therapy considerably enhances antitumor efficacy of the targeted anticancer drug.

Abstract
For far too long, the immune system has been viewed in isolation from the rest of the body's organ system. But now it is clear that the immune system is an integral part of the organ and physiological systems of whole organism. Especially, the immune and endocrine systems share many ligands and receptors that result in constant and important bidirectional communication. A new and important function for the immune system is to serve as a sensory organ for noncognitive stimuli such as infectious agents and tumours. On the other hand the neuroendocrine system can perform important immunoregulatory activities. It also suggest that brain is not more an immunologically privileged site. Recent studies provide a new view of immunoreactivity to antigens from the nervous system and to immune and inflammatory responses in brain. These may be influenced both by the circulating cytokines derived from the immune system and/or those endogenously produced within the neuroendocrine system. There is a growing body of evidence that cytokines are an integral part of the central nervous system with an important neuromodulatory role in neural mechanisms regulating stress responses, hormonal changes and various kinds of behavior. The mutual informatory circuit inside of the immune, nervous and endocrine systems suggest that they all form the superinformation system with pivotal regulatory role in living organisms. Overall, the recognition of the immune system as our sixth sense may ultimately provide the new understanding of physiology required for successful diagnostic and therapeutic programs against disease and stress involving immune-neuroendocrine communication. Abstract
Prionoses are a group of human and animal neurodegenerative diseases caused by prions, infectious pathogens that differ from bacteria, fungi, parasites, viroids, and viruses. Despite intensive searches over the past three decades, no nucleic acid has been found within prions and considerable experimental data argue that prions are composed exclusively of proteins (glycoproteins). Normal prion protein (PrPC) is encoded by a gene present in all nuclear cells of humans and other mammals but is constitutively expressed mainly in neurons. PrPC is protease sensitive and nonpathogenic but it can be modified to the pathological and protease resistant form designated PrPSC which is essential for infectivity. Prion diseases are manifested as infectious, genetic, or sporadic disorders and are also named as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE). TSE culminate with a progressive and fatal degeneration of the CNS. The human prionoses include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), kuru, Gerstman-Sträussler-Scheinker syndrome (GSS), and fatal familial insomnia (FFI). In mammals, more than 15 different species have been described to suffer from prion disorders till now. Scrapie of sheep and goats is the oldest and the most studied of the prion diseases. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and transmissible mink encephalopathy are thought to result from the feeding of scrapie-infected animal products, whereas BSE has been identified in transmission to mice, domestic cats, two exotic species of ruminant, and monkey. More than 20 cases of clinically and pathologically atypical form of CJD, referred to as "new variant" CJD (vCJD) have been recognized in unusually young people in the United Kingdom. There is a strong evidence that the same prion strain is involved in both BSE and vCJD. It suggest the breaking of species barrier which results by spreading of BSE to humans, putatively by dietary exposure. Understanding the function of prion proteins and their modification to the pathological form may give new insight into the etiologic and pathogenic mechanisms also other diseases caused by aberrant proteins, including Alzheimer' disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease. Abstract
Infectious diseases of animals are the subject of continuous concern. On the one hand there are some diseases which have not yet been described and on the other hand the presence of microbial agents is proved also in diseases which have been considered non-infectious. Undoubtedly, microbes and parasites take part also in the development of malignant transformation of cells. The question of possible transfer of animal oncogenic microorganisms (retroviruses in particular) to humans remains open. The study points to the changes in the incidence of orthopoxviruses which occurred after eradication of human variola and the increasing importance of bartonelloses. Disease prevention in animals is affected to an increasing extent by DNA recombinant methods. So called "Gene farming" has developed, consisting in production of narrow-profile therapeutically important proteins via animal bioreactors. We enter a period in which the resistance of animal organism begins to affect the transfer of genes encoding non-specific and specific protective mechanisms of organisms. (Tab. 7, Ref. 39.)
