Abstract
The conductive rough surfaces act as an integral part of several electron devices and systems. Electron tunnelling through the potential barrier imposed by the rough metal-vacuum interface is an important mechanism of charge transport in vacuum electron devices. Here, we analytically derive a generalized current–voltage relationship with a fractional image potential barrier that considers the reduced space-dimensionality encountered by the tunnelling electrons at a rough interface, in an effective manner. The traditional Schottky–Nordhiem equation based on the Schottky image potential barrier is shown to be a limiting case of our model for a perfectly flat surface. The fractional-dimension parameter used in this model accounts for the barrier reduction due to the geometrical roughness and it can be determined by fitting our model to a given current–voltage measurement. It is shown that the application of this model could reduce the error between measured current–voltage response and theoretical estimates based on the conventional model. This work provides an analytical framework for efficient design and engineering of quantum tunnelling in practical electron devices.

Abstract
This research work aims to investigate the effect of the aerobic bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa on the mechanical and electrochemical properties of the 316L stainless steel and α-brass. These properties of both the alloys were determined after 7 days of exposure to the controlled and inoculated media at 37°C. The microstructural and electrochemical test results revealed the deleterious effects of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. After exposure to the inoculated medium, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed the larger pitting and formation of relatively dense biofilm on α-brass compared to 316L stainless steel. The tensile strength and hardness of 316L stainless steel were slightly affected after exposure to the controlled and inoculated media. After exposure to the controlled medium and inoculated media, the tensile strength of the α-brass was least affected but a significant decrease in the hardness (from 165 HV to 124 HV) was observed due to the severe attack induced by the Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Similarly, the open-circuit potential of the 316L stainless steel in the inoculated medium was measured to be less active (−410 mV vs Ag/AgCl) than α-brass (−550 mV vs Ag/AgCl). In the inoculated medium, potentiodynamic polarization curves confirmed the severe attack of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on α-brass (7.15 × 10−2 mm/year) compared to 316L stainless steel which registered a corrosion rate of 5.14 × 10−4 mm/year.

Abstract
ABSTRACT. The aim of medicinal chemistry is to links many scientific disciplines and allows the scientists in researching and developing new drugs with enhance and targeted properties. In this article we are exploring the preparation of four new zinc(II) carboxylate complexes based on N-[(2-methoxy-5-nitrophenyl)]-4-oxo-4-[oxy]butenamide which were characterized through FT-IR and EDX studies. The DNA binding ability and binding type of complexes were assessed by spectroscopic (UV-Visible) and viscosity measurements, exhibiting an intercalative pattern of interaction. The synthesized compounds were also assessed to know theoretically about their nature by molecular docking studies resulting also in intercalation mode. Analysis of the complexes for biological applications such as anti-microbial, anti-leishmanial, cytotoxicity and DNA damage activities showed that these complexes carries good anti-microbial, anti-leishmanial activity with no toxicity to human blood thyrocytes and DNA. The bioavailability prediction and drug likeness score has also been evaluated through Insilco studies.

Abstract
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has recently reported a 66% increase in the global number of cancer deaths since 1960. In the US alone, about one in eight women is expected to develop invasive breast cancer(s) (breast cancer) at some point in their lifetime. Traditionally, a BC diagnosis includes mammography, ultrasound, and some high-end molecular bioimaging. Unfortunately, these techniques detect BC at a later stage. So early and advanced molecular diagnostic tools are still in demand. In the past decade, various histological and immuno-molecular studies have demonstrated that BC is highly heterogeneous in nature. Its growth pattern, cytological features, and expression of key biomarkers in BC cells including hormonal receptor markers can be utilized to develop advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tools. A cancer cell's progression to malignancy exhibits various vital biomarkers, many of which are still underrepresented in BC diagnosis and treatment. Advances in genetics have also enabled the development of multigene assays to detect genetic heterogeneity in BC. However, thus far, the FDA has approved only four such biomarkers-cancer antigens (CA); CA 15-3, CA 27-29, Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and circulating tumor cells (CTC) in assessing BC in body fluids. An adequately structured portable-biosensor with its non-invasive and inexpensive point-of-care analysis can quickly detect such biomarkers without significantly compromising its specificity and selectivity. Such advanced techniques are likely to discriminate between BC and a healthy patient by accurately measuring the cell shape, structure, depth, intracellular and extracellular environment, and lipid membrane compositions. Presently, BC treatments include surgery and systemic chemo- and targeted radiation therapy. A biopsied sample is then subjected to various multigene assays to predict the heterogeneity and recurrence score, thus guiding a specific treatment by providing complete information on the BC subtype involved. Thus far, we have seven prognostic multigene signature tests for BC providing a risk profile that can avoid unnecessary treatments in low-risk patients. Many comparative studies on multigene analysis projected the importance of integrating clinicopathological information with genomic-imprint analysis. Current cohort studies such as MINDACT, TAILORx, Trans-aTTOM, and many more, are likely to provide positive impact on long-term patient outcome. This review offers consolidated information on currently available BC diagnosis and treatment options. It further describes advanced biomarkers for the development of state-of-the-art early screening and diagnostic technologies.

Abstract
The activity concentrations of natural radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in soil samples collected from Sijua Dhanbad, India were measured by using a gamma-ray spectrometer with a NaI(Tl) detector. The average activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K was found as 60.3, 64.5 and 481.0 Bq. kg−1, respectively. Average radium equivalent activity, absorbed dose rate, outdoor dose, external hazard index and internal hazard index for the area under study is determined as 189.5 Bq. kg−1, 87.2 nGy h−1, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 mSv. y−1, respectively. The annual effective dose to the general public is found 0.4 mSv. y−1. This value lies well below the limit of 1 mSv. y−1. Measured values have found safe for the environment and public health of the study area.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate effects of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and reduced glutathione (GSH) on the quality of frozen-thawed semen of Sahiwal bulls. Semen was collected twice a week for 8 weeks by artificial vagina from six Sahiwal bulls, kept at the Semen Production Unit Qadirabad, Sahiwal-Pakistan. After gross and microscopic evaluation, qualifying semen ejaculates were divided into 10 equal aliquots and diluted in extenders enriched with no antioxidants (control); or supplemented with either SOD (50, 100 and 200 IU/mL), or GSH (0.5, 1 and 2 mM) or their combinations (50 IU/mL SOD and 0.5 mM GSH, 100 IU/mL SOD and 1 mM GSH and 200 IU/mL SOD and 2 mM GSH). Samples were then frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen at -196°C for 24 h. The following parameters were evaluated for semen quality: post-thawed sperm motility, viability, acrosome and membrane integrity. According to the results, sperm motility, viability, acrosome and membrane integrity were significantly (P<0.05) higher in samples treated either with 100 IU/mL of SOD; 1 mM and 2 mM of GSH or 50 IU/mL of SOD plus 0.5 mM of GSH. In conclusion, semen quality might be improved by supplementing semen extenders with 100 IU/mL of SOD; 0.5 and 1 mM of GSH and combination of 50 IU/mL and 0.5 mM of SOD and GSH, respectively.

Abstract
In this paper, a multi-compartment 0D model of the blood flow is considered to study the vessel abnormalities (stenoses and aneurysms) in the human systemic circulation (SC). In the complete SC, different levels of stenosis and aneurysms are artificially created by decreasing and increasing the vessel diameters respectively and their effects on pressure and flow are studied using sensitivity analysis (SA). Normalized local sensitivity analysis (LSA) is used to study the impact of stenosis and aneurysms on pressure and flow wave pattern. Furthermore, global sensitivity analysis (GSA), Sobol’s method is used to quantify the overall influence of stenoses and aneurysms in the complete SC. The results of global sensitivity analysis revealed that the impact of both stenoses and aneurysms is strong within the individual structures (arm, legs, carotid bifurcation, aorta), while, aortic stenoses and aneurysms have effect on almost all downstream nodes. Moreover, the study could be useful for medical doctors, teachers and students to observe the hemodynamical changes in the SC with respect to vessel abnormalities, which could further help in making any clinical decision for patients having different levels of vessel abnormalities in any part or structure of the SC.

Abstract
Recorded videos of laparoscopic surgery can be used to audit surgical practice with a view to improve clinical practice and surgical outcomes. The objective was to audit our own practice by reviewing video recordings of laparoscopic cholecystectomies to improve our dissection in Calot's triangle and to prevent gall bladder perforation. We used recorded videos of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. In this study initially one hundred consecutive videos were reviewed for: a) establishment of critical view of safety, b) optimization of critical view of safety by division of cystic artery before cystic duct, c) perforation of gall bladder and d) use of diathermy for cystic artery. This prospective interventional audit was performed in a Civil Hospital, Karachi and Hamdard University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan from January 2008 to March 2010. Recommendations were made according to published literature to change the practice in these steps of procedures. These recommendations were implemented in practice and the following 100 videos were reviewed for the same criteria to see the impact on clinical practice. In the first group, critical view of safety was established in 91 patients compared with 99 patients in 2nd group (p=0.009), optimization of view was done in 54 and 83 patients respectively (p<001), perforation occurred in 32 and 19 patients respectively (p=0.035) and use of diathermy for cystic artery, which was the routine, was stopped completely in the 2nd group. Audit of recorded videos of laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be used as an effective tool to improve surgical practice for safer and better outcome.

Abstract
AIMS The study was planned to characterize Planomicrobium sp. MSSA-10 for plant-beneficial traits and to evaluate its inoculation impact on physiology of pea plants under different salinity levels. METHODS AND RESULTS Strain MSSA-10 was isolated from pea rhizosphere and identified by the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence. The strain demonstrated phosphate solubilization and auxin production up to 2 mol l-1 NaCl and exhibited 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase activity up to 1·5 mol l-1 salt. In an inoculation experiment under different salinity regimes, a significant increase in growth was observed associated with decreased levels of reactive oxygen species and enhanced antioxidative enzyme activities. The strain also promoted the translocation of nutrients in plants with subsequent increase in chlorophyll and protein contents as compared to noninoculated plants. It has been observed that rifampicin-resistant derivatives of MSSA-10 were able to survive for 30 days at optimum cell density with pea rhizosphere. CONCLUSION Growth-stimulating effect of MSSA-10 on pea plants may be attributed to its rhizosphere competence, nutrient mobilization and modulation of plant oxidative damage repair mechanisms under saline environment. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Planomicrobium sp. MSSA-10 might be used as potent bioinoculant to relieve pea plants from deleterious effects of salinity.

Abstract
This study was planned to determine the relationship between semen quality parameters and the levels of biochemical constituents of seminal plasma of Teddy (Capra hircus) buck semen. For this purpose, semen ejaculates were collected from five mature healthy Teddy bucks. All the experimental bucks were kept under natural environmental conditions. Semen was collected twice in a week for the duration of 6 weeks by Artificial Vagina (AV) in the breeding season (February-April). Two successive ejaculates of single buck were pooled at time of collection, and a total of 60 semen samples were processed for semen analysis. Sperm per cent motility, sperm concentration, dead sperm percentage, morphological abnormal spermatozoa, plasma membrane integrity were correlated with biochemical constituents of seminal plasma. The mean per cent motility (89.18% ± 0.37%), sperm concentration (1.86 ± 0.04 × 109 /ml), dead sperm percentage (8.08% ± 0.29%), morphological abnormal spermatozoa (6.05% ± 0.29%) and plasma membrane integrity (88.22% ± 0.34%) were recorded. The seminal plasma contained Na+ (144.12 ± 1.59 mEq/L), K+ (27.38 ± 0.49 mEq/L), Cl- (65.73 ± 0.45 mEq/L), Ca++ (9.34 ± 0.22 mg/dl), P (19.32 ± 0.97 mg/dl), aspartate aminotransferase (AST; 26.48 ± 1.30 IU/L), alanine aminotransferase (ALT; 168.47 ± 5.18 IU/L), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH; 215.98 ± 6.06 IU/L), albumin (1.90 ± 0.10 g/dl), globulins (2.08 ± 0.11 g/dl) and total protein (3.98 ± 0.20 g/dl). The collected data were analysed by applying Pearson's correlation coefficients. Dead sperm percentage had negative correlation with sodium (r = -.278, p < .05), albumin (r = -.294, p < .05), globulin (r = -.266, p < .05) and total protein (r = -.295, p < .05). Phosphorus was negatively associated with sperm concentration (r = -.262, p < .05). AST was negatively correlated with plasma membrane integrity (r = -.292, p < .05). It was concluded that most of the semen quality parameters of Teddy bucks were positively correlated with biochemical constituents, but opposite trends were found in case of dead sperm percentage. The seminal biochemical constituents dynamically interact with each other.

Abstract
Introduction Brown-Séquard syndrome is an unusual sequelae of pre-ganglionic brachial plexus injury. There have been sporadic case reports indicating that the cause of this condition is due to tethering of the cord, vascular ischaemia or direct avulsion injury of the nerve roots. This is a report of two patients with complete pre-ganglionic brachial plexus avulsion injuries who developed acute partial Brown-Séquard syndrome due to haematoma. Cases Two patients developed acute partial Brown-Séquard syndrome associated with complete pre-ganglionic brachial plexus avulsion injuries. In the first case the neurology recovered fully after the evacuation of the large subdural hematoma. Whereas, in the second case the neurology only recovered after 4 weeks closed observation in view of the compression was due to small epidural haematoma. Conclusion Acute Brown-Séquard syndrome occurring in association brachial plexus injury should be investigated with urgent magnetic resonance imaging to exclude any reversible haematoma compression.

Abstract
Different landmarks are described in laparoscopic cholecystectomy for correct identification and orientation of structures to make the procedure as safe as possible. Among these one of the important landmarks is cystic lymphnode which always lies lateral to the biliary tree and forms the medial end point of dissection. This study was done to determine frequency of identification of cystic lymph node in our population. This retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 217 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for cholelithiasis from January 2012 to December 2013 over a period of two years in Jamal Noor Hospital and Hamdard University Hospital Karachi. All procedures were recorded and reviewed. Frequency of identification of cystic lymph node was documented in different levels of difficulty and whether it was possible to keep the dissection lateral to lymph node. Difficulty was assessed per-operatively by Cuschieri's scale. During dissection cystic lymph node was identified in 170(78.34%) cases. In majority of patients i.e. 165(97.05%), it was related to cystic artery. In 78(45.88%) patient dissection was possible lateral to lymph node. Cystic lymph node can be identified in majority of patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy and this identification helps in safe dissection of Calot's triangle. Efforts should be made to remain lateral to lymph node to avoid injuries to hepatic pedicle.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify high-yielding peanut genotypes with resistance to leaf spot disease. The experiments included material from fourteen local and four exotic peanut genotypes that showed highly significant differences among morphological and disease severity parameters in all the genotypes which, in turn, suggested diversity genotypes. Disease severity analysis showed that the highest disease score and damaged leaf area were observed in the genotype Kelincer and the lowest scores and leaf damaged areas were observed in Majalaya super and BARI-2000, respectively. Based on these results, the genotypes BARI-2011, Chakori, Golden, BARI-89, Majalaya Super, BARD-699, BARI-2000, SP-1, and No. 334 can be used by breeders in peanut improvement programs for the development of new cultivars with higher disease resistance and increased yield.

Abstract
Interspecific and intraspecific hybrids show varying degrees of heterosis for yield and yield components. Yield-component traits have complex genetic relationships with each other. To determine the relationship of yield-component traits and fiber traits with seed cotton yield, six lines (Bt. CIM-599, CIM-573, MNH-786, CIM-554, BH-167, and GIZA-7) and three test lines (MNH-886, V4, and CIM-557) were crossed in a line x tester mating design. Heterosis was observed for seed cotton yield, fiber traits, and for other yield-component traits. Heterosis in interspecific hybrids for seed cotton yield was more prominent than in intraspecific hybrids. The interspecific hybrid Giza-7 x MNH-886 had the highest heterosis (114.77), while among intraspecific hybrids, CIM-554 x CIM-557 had the highest heterosis (61.29) for seed cotton yield. A major trait contributing to seed cotton yield was bolls/plant followed by boll weight. Correlation studies revealed that bolls/plant, boll weight, lint weight/boll, lint index, seed index, lint/seed, staple length, and staple strength were significantly and positively associated with seed cotton yield. Selection based on boll weight, boll number, lint weight/boll, and lint index will be helpful for improving cotton seed yield.

Abstract
Biofuel tree species are recognized as a promising alternative source of fuel to conventional forms. Additionally, these tree species are also effective in accumulating toxic heavy metals present in some industrial effluents. In developing countries such as Pakistan, the use of biofuel tree species is gaining popularity not only for harvesting economical and environmentally friendly biofuel, but also to sequester poisonous heavy metals from industrial wastewater. This study was aimed at evaluating the genetic potential of two biofuel species, namely, Jatropha curcas and Pongamia pinnata, to grow when irrigated with industrial effluent from the Pak-Arab Fertilizer Factory Multan, Southern Punjab, Pakistan. The growth performances of one-year-old seedlings of both species were compared in soil with adverse physiochemical properties. It was found that J. curcas was better able to withstand the toxicity of the heavy metals present in the fertilizer factory effluent. J. curcas showed maximum gain in height, diameter, and biomass production in soil irrigated with 75% concentrated industrial effluent. In contrast, P. pinnata showed a significant reduction in growth in soil irrigated with more than 50% concentrated industrial effluent, indicating that this species is less tolerant to higher toxicity levels of industrial effluent. This study identifies J. curcas as a promising biofuel tree species that can be grown using industrial wastewater.

Abstract
The hypo-osmotic swelling test (HOST) is widely used as a valuable test for determining sperm quality by evaluating the membrane integrity of spermatozoa of various domestic animals including cattle, horses and swine. The HOST has also been used as an indicator of the fertilising capacity of spermatozoa. This test is based on the swelling ability when functional spermatozoa submitted to hypo-osmotic solutions. This test is commonly used as an important parameter for the evaluation of semen due to its strong correlation with semen evaluation parameters. The objective of this review was to analyse its significance in semen evaluation, swelling of spermatozoa under various osmolarities and variations in swelling percentage under different seasons.

Abstract
To determine the correlation of wound morbidity especially serum drain output in on lay mesh hernioplasty with Body Mass Index (BMI). This prospective descriptive study was conducted at Hamdard University Hospital and Jamal Noor Hospital from January 2010 to December 2011. A total of 42 females with ventral hernias were included. According to BMI, patients were divided in two groups. Group 1(G-1) included patients with BMI ≤29.9 and Group 2(G-2) included patients with BMI ≥30. All patients underwent hernioplasty by conventional open method (on lay technique). Wound was closed over a vaccum drain (16 Fr). Total drain output, the number of days drain kept, clinical seroma formation & need of aspiration after removal of drain, discharge from the wound and wound infection were recorded and analyzed on SPSS version 15 by using sample 't' test. A total of 42 female patients, 21 in each group, were included with the mean age of 46.95 years. Size of hernial defect was 4.80cm in G-1 and 4.61cm in G-2. Mean drain out- put in G-1 was 134.05ml while in G-2 it was 244.29ml (p=0.008). Duration of drainage in G-1 was 3.71 days and in G-2 was 5.24 days (p=0.028). Seroma formation and serous discharge from the wound occurred in 2(4.76%) patients, both were from Group-1 and they required aspiration once only. Wound infection occurred in 4(9.52%) patients, and all were in Group 2. Post operative drain output in on lay mesh hernioplasty is directly proportional to the Body Mass Index (BMI) and these are the patients who require a longer period of drainage therefore this fact should be explained to obese patients in pre operative informed consent.

Abstract
This study was done to evaluate the frequency of iatrogenic gall bladder perforation (IGBP) in laparoscopic cholecystectomy and to determine its association with gender, adhesions in right upper quadrant and types of gall bladder. This retrospective descriptive study included 200 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for symptomatic cholelithiasis at Jamal Noor Hospital and Hamdard University Hospital, Karachi from January 2007 to January 2009. Video recording of all 200 laparoscopic cholecystectomies were analyzed for the IGBP. The different factors; sex of the patient, type of gall bladder, presence of adhesions in the right upper quadrant, timing of perforation, site of perforation, cause of perforation and spillage of stones were recorded. Data was entered and analyzed on SPSS 15. Pearson Chi Square test was applied to check the significance of these factors in IGBP where applicable. In this study there were 173 females and 27 male patients. IGBP occurred in 51 patients (25.5%) and among them 40(23.12%) were females and 11(40.74%) males. Statistical analysis failed to prove male gender a significant factor in the IGBP (p=0.051). Spillage of stones occurred in 23 patients (11.5% in total study population). In 32(18.49%) patients with chronic calculus cholecystitis IGBP occured while in other cluster of 27 patients suffering from acute cholecystitis, empyema & mucocele, 19(70.37%) had IGBP. Hence the condition of gall bladder (acute cholecystitis, empyema and mucocele) was proved statistically a significant factor in IGBP (p=0.000). Adhesiolysis in right upper quadrant was required in 109 patients in whom 31 patients (28.44%) had IGBP while in 91 patients in whom no adhesiolysis was required, 20 patients (21.98%) had IGBP. Statistically no significant difference was present regarding this factor (p=0.296). In total of 51 patients of IGBP, fundus of gall bladder was the commonest site of perforation in 21(41.18%), followed by body of gall bladder in 18(35.29%) and Hartman's pouch in 12(23.53%) patients. In 27(52.94%) patients, diathermy hook was the cause of perforation followed by grasping forceps in 24(47.06%) patients. In 33(64.71%) patients perforations occurred during dissection of gall bladder from liver bed, in 2(3.92%) during adhesiolysis and in 16(31.37%) during retraction maneuvers. Perforation of gall bladder occurred in 25.5% of patients during laparoscopic cholecystectomy and acutely inflamed and over distended gall bladders were proved significant factor for this intraoperative event.

Abstract
The phytochemical investigation of the n-butanol soluble fraction of the bark of stem of Symplocos racemosa Roxb. yielded two new phenolic glycosides of salirepin series, symplocuronic acid (1) and sympocemoside (2), while salirepin (3) was isolated for the first time from this plant. The structures of the new compounds were identified by 1D and 2D NMR techniques along with other spectral evidences and by comparison with the published data of closely related compounds.
