First report of oral angiokeratoma in a xeroderma pigmentosum

Introduction and importance

Xeroderma pigmentosum is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder with impaired ability to repair DNA damage. Detection of the intraoral benign and malignant lesion in Xeroderma pigmentosum is uncommon, and the reported few cases were in the lip and tip of the tongue which are related to ultraviolet light exposure.

Case presentation

We present a case of 20 years old male with erythematous to violet, painless and shiny papule at the right side of the tongue. The lesion was surgically excised while the histopathological examination of the lesion showed focally eroded and hyperplastic stratified squamous epithelial covering with underlying capillary sized blood vessel filled with RBCs and lined by endothelium with no atypia or malignancy.

Clinical discussion

Oral angiokeratoma is a rare disease in patient with Xeroderma pigmentosum that should be early detected and diagnosed to decrease the liability for malignant transformation.

Conclusion

Health case workers should be aware of the nature of the disease, protection of the patient from ultraviolet light as well as Frequent follow up of the patients for a better quality of life.

New nanosized Gd-Ho-Sm doped M-type strontium hexaferrite for water treatment application: experimental and theoretical investigations

In this paper, rare-earth doped M-type strontium hexaferrite magnetic nanoparticles SrHo_xGd_ySm_zFe_{(12−(x+z+y))}O₁₉ (x = y = z = 0.01) have been prepared by the sol–gel combustion method for the first time. The properties of the material were investigated using XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and VSM. X-ray analysis revealed that a magnetic single-phase was formed with a crystallite average size of 49 nm. FTIR spectra confirmed the formation of the structure of the hexaferrite phase. Raman analysis confirmed the formation of all crystallographic hexaferrite sites. A shift in the octahedral site frequencies and a significant shift were observed at site 12k and 2a, indicating that the doping elements occupied these sites. The SEM analysis showed that the particles were different in shape and slightly agglomerated. The EDS result confirmed the purity of the sample. The calculated band gap from the UV-Vis NIR spectroscopy spectra of the sample was 1.62 eV. The magnetic analysis of the sample material at room temperature revealed a coercivity of 5257.63 Oe, saturation magnetization of 67.72 emu g⁻¹, remanence ratio of 0.52, a maximum magnetic energy product of 1.06 MGOe and Curie temperature of T_c = 765 K. First-principles calculations were conducted on multiple configurations of SrFe_12−xX_xO₁₉ with x = 0, 0.5 and X = Sm, Gd, Ho. The site preference of each doping element was determined, and the effect of the doping on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the compound was studied. The magnetic properties of this rare earth (Gd, Ho, Sm) doped strontium hexaferrite indicated that this compound could be used in both permanent magnets and water treatment application.

Development of the new nanohexaferrite SrHo_0.01Gd_0.01Sm_0.01Fe_11.97O₁₉ for important applications in industry, which could be very beneficial for applications in magnetic water treatment.

Magnetic and structural properties of single-phase Gd3+-substituted Co–Mg ferrite nanoparticles

Co_0.7Mg_0.3Fe_1.98Gd_0.02O₄ nanoparticles were synthesized by coprecipitation for the first time. The nanoparticles show spinel structures with high crystalline purity and excellent magnetic properties.

Detection of intraocular Leptospira spp. by real-time polymerase chain reaction in horses with recurrent uveitis in Belgium

BACKGROUND

Equine recurrent uveitis (ERU) has been associated with Leptospira spp. infection. No information exists concerning the prevalence of Leptospira-associated ERU in Belgium and about the sensitivity of detection of Leptospira in different ocular media.

OBJECTIVES

To establish the prevalence of intraocular Leptospira spp. in ERU-affected and healthy eyes of horses examined at the Equine Clinic of the University of Liège by real-time PCR and to compare the results of the aqueous and vitreous humour of the same eye.

STUDY DESIGN

Cross-sectional.

METHODS

Sixty-six eyes from 59 client-owned horses with a diagnosis of equine recurrent uveitis (ERU-group) were studied from May 2015 to December 2017. Fifty healthy eyes from 28 euthanised horses for unrelated reasons examined during the same period were included in the control group. Intraocular fluids (aqueous and/or vitreous humours) from ERU-affected eyes were sampled and analysed by real-time PCR for Leptospira spp. Aqueous and vitreous humours from the control group were processed in the same way.

RESULTS

Both groups were comparable regarding age, sex, eye sampled (OS/OD), humours sampled (aqueous/vitreous humour) but not regarding breeds, with an over-representation of Warmbloods and Appaloosas in the ERU-group. The prevalence of Leptospira spp. was 30.3% (20/66 eyes) in the ERU-group. Leptospira spp. DNA was identified in 11 aqueous and 17 vitreous humours with eight horses testing positive in both humours, nine horses testing positive for vitreous humour alone and third horses for aqueous humour alone. The phi-correlation between aqueous and vitreous humour Leptospira-PCR results is 0.47 suggesting a low association. All the control eyes were negative.

MAIN LIMITATIONS

The diagnostic method selected for this study (lipL32 qPCR) did not allow identification of the serovars.

CONCLUSIONS

Leptospirosis is a potential cause of ERU in Belgium. Testing both intraocular media is advised whenever possible. The Summary is available in Spanish - see Supporting Information.
