Invigorating chronic wound healing by nanocomposites composed with bioactive materials: a comprehensive review

Wound healing research has revealed a plethora of data regarding various techniques for treating diverse types of wounds. It is well known that chronic wounds heal slowly and are vulnerable to infection. Also, there are numerous factors like destitute blood passage, undetermined inflammation, angiogenesis, neuropathy, and cell multiplication which overhang chronic wound healing. To eliminate the speculative features of chronic wounds, we made a consecutive survey on specific categories of biomaterials like bioglass, bioactive glass, bioceramics, biopolymers, and biocompatible metal oxide nanoparticles. In particular, the bioglass or bioactive glass which is a silica matrix composed of sodium, calcium, phosphorous, etc., is used for bone-bonding ability and easily dissolved in vivo conditions to repair damaged and wounded tissues with their peculiar physiochemical (surface area, porous nature, structural formation, mechanical stability) and biological properties (biocompatible, cytocompatible, osteoinductive, angiogenesis, hemostatic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammation). Furthermore, based on the existing literature studies, we summarized the healing of diabetes wound tendency by bioactive composite materials and offer detailed information on the method, techniques, and future technologies for wound healing.

Impact of digital boards on hand and neck muscle activity during online teaching process

Academicians across the globe due to Covid 19 shifted to online teaching as a mainstream method by replacing the chalk and talk method. The main objective of this study is to find the impact of different sizes of digital boards used for online teaching on muscle activity and muscle fatigue, and then results are compared with conventional writing. Initially, a questionnaire survey is conducted among 100 college professors about the issue they faced while using online teaching methods. Experimental analysis are then conducted using electromyography sensor (sEMG) among ten college professors and their muscle activity on the dominant hand and neck while writing on two commercially available digital boards namely Type 1 (small writing area) and Type 2 (large writing area). Four muscles namely Flexor carpi radialis, Extensor carpi radialis, Biceps brachii, and Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) are chosen for the study. The results are then compared with muscle activity while writing on conventional A4 sheets. Normalized root mean square (RMS) is used to assess the muscle activity and the trend line of MPF value is utilized to assess the muscle fatigue. The results show that SCM muscle has more muscle activation compared to other selected muscles followed by flexor carpi radialis. Subjective analysis is carried out using the Borg scale, which has reported that Type 2 digital board having larger working area was preferred by the participants as it reduces muscle fatigue.

In vitro study on α-amylase inhibitory activity of an Indian medicinal plant, Phyllanthus amarus

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to evaluate the α-amylase inhibitory activity of different extracts of Phyllanthus amarus against porcine pancreatic amylase in vitro.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The plant extracts were prepared sequentially with ethanol, chloroform, and hexane. Each extract was evaporated using rotary evaporator, under reduced pressure. Different concentrations (10, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 μg/mL) of each extract were made by using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and subjected to α-amylase inhibitory assay using starch azure as a substrate. The absorbance was read at 595 nm using spectrophotometer. Using this method, the percentage of α-amylase inhibitory activity and IC(50)values of each extract was calculated.

RESULTS

The chloroform extract failed to inhibit α-amylase activity. However, the ethanol and hexane extracts of P. amarus exhibited appreciable α-amylase inhibitory activity with an IC50 values 36.05 ± 4.01 μg/mL and 48.92 ± 3.43 μg/mL, respectively, when compared with acarbose (IC(50)value 83.33 ± 0.34 μg/mL).

CONCLUSION

This study supports the ayurvedic concept that ethanol and hexane extracts of P. amarus exhibit considerable α-amylase inhibitory activities. Further, this study supports its usage in ethnomedicines for management of diabetes.
