Abstract
As a highly anticipated technique for bottom-up nanotechnology, i.e., shape control of pure functional molecules, we here report controlled formation of two-dimensional (2D) objects such as hexagons and rhombi and their selective shape shifting into one-dimensional (1D) rods through solvent-dependent changes of crystal lattice, all from pure C(60). Uniformly shaped rhombi and hexagons were obtained at tert-butyl alcohol/toluene and i-propyl alcohol/CCl(4) interfaces, respectively. In addition, exposure of these 2D nanosheets to water induced selective transformation into 1D nanorods. Nanorhombi were converted to short nanorods upon exposure to water. This shape shift is accompanied by changes in crystalline structures from a mixed fcc/hexagonal to pure fcc lattice, the latter of which is almost identical with morphologically similar C(60) nanowhiskers. Metastable nanorhombi which possess a strained mixed crystalline structure metamorphosize into the more stable short nanowhisker (nanorods). In contrast, the stable nanohexagon of a single lattice (and so less strain) does not undergo shape shifting. These results clearly demonstrate controlled formation of 2D nanosheets with various shapes (hexagons, rhombi, etc.) and selective shape shifting to nanorods (short nanowhiskers) all from pure C(60) molecules by very simple solvent treatments.

Abstract
The supramolecular nanoarchitectures, C(60)/ferrocene nanosheets, were prepared by a simple liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation method and fully characterized by means of SEM, STEM, HRTEM, XRD, Raman and UV-vis-NIR spectra. The highly crystallized C(60)/ferrocene hexagonal nanosheets had a size of ca. 9 microm and the formulation C(60)(ferrocene)(2). A strong charge-transfer (CT) band between ferrocene and C(60) was observed at 782 nm, indicating the presence of donor-acceptor interaction in the nanosheets. Upon heating the nanosheets to 150 degrees C, the CT band disappeared due to the sublimation of ferrocene from the C(60)/ferrocene hybrid, and C(60) nanosheets with an fcc crystal structure and the same shape and size as the C(60)/ferrocene nanosheets were obtained.

Abstract
We develop a simple approach to fabricate graphene-loaded TiO(2) thin films on glass substrates by the spin-coating technique. Our graphene-loaded TiO(2) films were highly conductive and transparent and showed enhanced photocatalytic activities. More significantly, graphene/TiO(2) films displayed superhydrophilicity within a short time even under a white fluorescent light bulb, as compared to a pure TiO(2) film. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of graphene/TiO(2) films is attributed to its efficient charge separation, owing to electrons injection from the conduction band of TiO(2) to graphene. The electroconductivity of the graphene-loaded TiO(2) thin film also contributes to the self-cleaning function by its antifouling effect against particulate contaminants. The present study reveals the ability of graphene as a low cost cocatalyst instead of expensive noble metals (Pt, Pd), and further shows its capability for the application of self-cleaning coatings with transparency. The promising characteristics of (inexpensive, transparent, conductive, superhydrophilic, and highly photocatalytically active) graphene-loaded TiO(2) films may have the potential use in various indoor applications.

Abstract
A versatile method for the rapid fabrication of aligned fullerene C60 nanowhiskers (C60NWs) at the air-water interface is presented. This method is based on the vortex motion of a subphase (water), which directs floating C60NWs to align on the water surface according to the direction of rotational flow. Aligned C60NWs could be transferred onto many different flat substrates, and, in this case, aligned C60NWs on glass substrates were employed as a scaffold for cell culture. Bone forming human osteoblast MG63 cells adhered well to the C60NWs, and their growth was found to be oriented with the axis of the aligned C60NWs. Cells grown on aligned C60NWs were more highly oriented with the axis of alignment than when grown on randomly oriented nanowhiskers. A study of cell proliferation on the C60NWs revealed their low toxicity, indicating their potential for use in biomedical applications.

Abstract
Materials which possess high specific capacitance in device configuration with low cost are essential for viable application in supercapacitors. Herein, a flexible high-energy supercapacitor device was fabricated using porous activated high-surface-area carbon derived from aloe leaf (Aloe vera) as a precursor. The A. vera derived activated carbon showed mesoporous nature with high specific surface area of ∼1890 m2/g. A high specific capacitance of 410 and 306 F/g was achieved in three-electrode and symmetric two-electrode system configurations in aqueous electrolyte, respectively. The fabricated all-solid-state device showed a high specific capacitance of 244 F/g with an energy density of 8.6 Wh/kg. In an ionic liquid electrolyte, the fabricated device showed a high specific capacitance of 126 F/g and a wide potential window up to 3 V, which results in a high energy density of 40 Wh/kg. Furthermore, it was observed that the activation temperature has significant role in the electrochemical performance, as the activated sample at 700 °C showed best activity than the samples activated at 600 and 800 °C. The electron microscopic images (FE-SEM and HR-TEM) confirmed the formation of pores by the chemical activation. A fabricated supercapacitor device in ionic liquid with 3 V could power up a red LED for 30 min upon charging for 20s. Also, it is shown that the operation voltage and capacitance of flexible all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitors fabricated using aloe-derived activated carbon could be easily tuned by series and parallel combinations. The performance of fabricated supercapacitor devices using A. vera derived activated carbon in all-solid-state and ionic liquid indicates their viable applications in flexible devices and energy storage.

Abstract
Nano-size photocatalysts exhibit multifunctional properties that opened the door for improved efficiency in energy, environment, and health care applications. Among the diversity of catalyst Quantum dots are a class of nanomaterials having a particle size between 2 and 10 nm, showing unique optoelectrical properties that are limited to some of the metal, metal oxide, metal chalcogenides, and carbon-based nanostructures. These unique characteristics arise from either pristine or binary/ternary composites where noble metal/metal oxide/metal chalcogenide/carbon quantum dots are anchored on the surface of semiconductor photocatalyst. It emphasized that properties, as well as performance of photocatalytic materials, are greatly influenced by the choice of synthesis methods and experimental conditions. Among the chemical methods, photo-deposition, precipitation, and chemical reduction, are the three most influential synthesis approaches. Further, two types of quantum dots namely metal based and carbon-based materials have been highlighted. Based on the optical, electrical and surface properties, quantum dots based photocatalysts have been divided into three categories namely (a) photocatalyst (b) co-catalyst and (c) photo-sensitizer. They showed enhanced photocatalytic performance for hydrogen production under visible/UV-visible light irradiation. Often, pristine metal chalcogenides as well as metal/metal oxide/carbon quantum dots attached to a semiconductor particle exhibit enhanced the photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production through absorption of visible light. Alternatively, noble metal quantum dots, which provide plenty of defects/active sites facilitate continuous hydrogen production. For instance, production of hydrogen in the presence of sacrificial agents using metal chalcogenides, metal oxides, and coinage metals based catalysts such as CdS/MoS2 (99,000 μmol h-1g-1) TiO2-Ni(OH)2 (47,195 μmol h-1g-1) and Cu/Ag-TiO2 nanotubes (56,167 μmol h-1g-1) have been reported. Among the carbon-based nanostructures, graphitic C3N4 and carbon quantum dots composites displayed enhanced hydrogen gas (116.1 μmol h-1) production via overall water splitting. This review accounts recent findings on various chemical approaches used for quantum dots synthesis and their improved materials properties leading to enhanced hydrogen production particularly under visible light irradiation. Finally, the avenue to improve quantum efficiency further is proposed.

Supercritical fluid assisted synthesis of N-doped graphene with nitric acid showed a enhanced specific capacitance of 261 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 and 126% capacitance retention was observed after 1000 cycles at 5 A g−1 due to cycling induced surface wetting.

Abstract
Peripheral blood monocytes from polar lepromatous leprosy (LL) patients were unable to support Mycobacterium leprae-induced in vitro lymphoproliferation of HLA-D-matched T cells from tuberculoid leprosy subjects, whereas those from responder individuals were able to do so. Monocyte-rich adherent cells from untreated LL patients released de novo soluble factors which inhibited antigen-induced lymphoproliferation to a greater extent and mitogenic responses to a lesser extent. Suppressive activity varied in different LL patients. However, the degree of suppression was similar in soluble factors obtained de novo and after treatment of adherent cells with heat-killed and freshly extracted, cryopreserved M. leprae. Treated patients showed less inhibition with de novo released soluble factors (27 +/- 7.7%) as compared to parallel soluble factors obtained after antigen treatment (44 +/- 4.8%) or with de novo soluble factors from untreated LL patients (62 +/- 14.2%). Similar supernatants from tuberculoid individuals showed no or insignificant effects on antigen-induced lymphoproliferation. The suppressive activity of LL soluble factors was produced for up to 72 h, was heat stable at 56 degrees C for 30 min, was indomethacin resistant, and resided in the greater than 25,000 molecular weight fraction.

Abstract
Antigenic determinants of Mycobacterium leprae were identified by screening a lambda gt11::M. leprae genomic library with two separate pools of sera from leprosy patients. A total of 45 recombinant clones were detected with pooled sera from 21 lepromatous (LL) leprosy patients and 5 additional clones specified polypeptides that reacted with antibodies in pooled sera from 30 borderline tuberculoid or tuberculoid leprosy patients. The recombinant clones that specified antigenic determinants that reacted with sera from LL patients were condensed into eight groups on the basis of DNA hybridization experiments among the M. leprae DNA insert fragments. In addition, 11 of the 45 recombinant clones did not hybridize to members of the eight groups nor to one another; these represent unique recombinant clones. None of the recombinant clones identified by screening with sera from tuberculoid leprosy patients hybridized to each other or to any of the 45 LL recombinant clones. The polypeptides specified by the recombinant clones were usually fusion proteins with beta-galactosidase, ranging in size from 117 to 175 kilodaltons (kDa). Members of hybridization group III specified nonfusion proteins of 45 kDa. Only members of hybridization group I reacted with any of 30 monoclonal antibodies prepared against M. leprae proteins; recombinant proteins from these clones reacted with a single monoclonal antibody directed against the M. leprae 65-kDa protein. Thus, at least 22 new antigenic determinants of M. leprae have been identified on the basis of their reactivity to antibodies in sera from LL patients or sera from tuberculoid leprosy patients or both.
