Markov-modulated model for landing flow dynamics: An ordinal analysis validation

Air transportation is a complex system characterized by a plethora of interactions at multiple temporal and spatial scales; as a consequence, even simple dynamics like sequencing aircraft for landing can lead to the appearance of emergent behaviors, which are both difficult to control and detrimental to operational efficiency. We propose a model, based on a modulated Markov jitter, to represent ordinal pattern properties of real landing operations in European airports. The parameters of the model are tuned by minimizing the distance between the probability distributions of ordinal patterns generated by the real and synthetic sequences, as estimated by the Permutation Jensen-Shannon Distance. We show that the correlation between consecutive hours in the landing flow changes between airports and that it can be interpreted as a metric of efficiency. We further compare the dynamics pre and post COVID-19, showing how this has changed beyond what can be attributed to a simple reduction of traffic. We finally draw some operational conclusions and discuss the applicability of these findings in a real operational environment.

The contributing external load factors to internal load during small-sided games in professional rugby union players

Introduction

This study aimed to investigate which external load variables were associated with internal load during three small-sided games (SSG) in professional rugby union players.

Methods

Forty professional rugby union players (22 forwards, 18 backs) competing in the English Gallagher Premiership were recruited. Three different SSGs were designed: one for backs, one for forwards, and one for both backs and forwards. General linear mixed-effects models were implemented with internal load as dependent variable quantified using Stagno's training impulse, and external load as independent variables quantified using total distance, high-speed (>61% top speed) running distance, average acceleration-deceleration, PlayerLoad™, PlayerLoad™ slow (<2 m·s^-1), number of get-ups, number of first-man-to-ruck.

Results

Internal load was associated with different external load variables dependent on SSG design. When backs and forwards were included in the same SSG, internal load differed between positional groups (MLE = -121.94, SE = 29.03, t = -4.20).

Discussion

Based on the SSGs investigated, practitioners should manipulate different constraints to elicit a certain internal load in their players based on the specific SSG design. Furthermore, the potential effect of playing position on internal load should be taken into account in the process of SSG design when both backs and forwards are included.

Designing a small-sided game to elicit attacking tactical behaviour in professional rugby union forwards

This study aimed to investigate the consistency of attacking tactical and technical behaviour, and physical characteristics, over multiple bouts, and variability across days, of a specific rugby union forwards small-sided game (SSG). Data was collected from 21 professional rugby union forwards during four training sessions. The SSG, consisting of five bouts of work (150-s) interspersed by passive recovery (75-s), aimed to elicit specific attacking tactical behaviour. Tactical behaviour (i.e., regularity of attacking shape [entropy]), and technical (e.g., passes) and physical (e.g., total distance) characteristics were quantified. Results showed that technical characteristics remained consistent, whereas the regularity of width of the attacking shape and two physical characteristics (i.e., total distance, training impulse) varied across bouts. However, these effects had limited practical significance. Technical characteristics were consistent across days, but minimal variability was observed for tactical behaviour and physical characteristics, as shown by their small random effects with 95% profile likelihood confidence intervals (PLCI) including zero (e.g., SD[95%PLCI] = 0.03[0.00, 0.06]). Consequently, consistency of stimulus over bouts and days is achievable for the majority of the variables investigated, thus supporting the use of SSG to elicit consistent attacking behaviour, but also technical and physical characteristics in rugby union forwards.

Identifying the Current State and Improvement Opportunities in the Information Flows Necessary to Manage Professional Athletes: A Case Study in Rugby Union

In sporting environments, the knowledge necessary to manage athletes is built on information flows associated with player management processes. In current literature, there are limited case studies available to illustrate how such information flows are optimized. Hence, as the first step of an optimization project, this study aimed to evaluate the current state and the improvement opportunities in the player management information flow executed within the High-Performance Unit (HPU) at a professional rugby union club in England. Guided by a Business Process Management framework, elicitation of the current process architecture illustrated the existence of 18 process units and two core process value chains relating to player management. From the identified processes, the HPU management team prioritized 7 processes for optimization. In-depth details on the current state (As-Is) of the selected processes were extracted from semi-structured, interview-based process discovery and were modeled using Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) and Decision Model and Notation (DMN) standards. Results were presented for current issues in the information flow of the daily training load management process, identified through a thematic analysis conducted on the data obtained mainly from focus group discussions with the main stakeholders (physiotherapists, strength and conditioning coaches, and HPU management team) of the process. Specifically, the current state player management information flow in the HPU had issues relating to knowledge creation and process flexibility. Therefore, the results illustrate that requirements for information flow optimization within the considered environment exist in the transition from data to knowledge during the execution of player management decision-making processes.

Digitally Optimizing the Information Flows Necessary to Manage Professional Athletes: A Case Study in Rugby Union

Practical case studies elaborating end-to-end attempts to improve the quality of information flows associated with athlete management processes are scarce in the current sport literature. Therefore, guided by a Business Process Management (BPM) approach, the current study presents the outcomes from a case study to optimize the quality of strength and conditioning (S&C) information flow in the performance department of a professional rugby union club. Initially, the S&C information flow was redesigned using integral technology, activity elimination and activity automation redesign heuristics. Utilizing the Lean Startup framework, the redesigned information flow was digitally transformed by designing data collection, management and visualization systems. Statistical tests used to assess the usability of the data collection systems against industry benchmarks using the System Usability Scale (SUS) administered to 55 players highlighted that its usability (mean SUS score of 87.6 ± 10.76) was well above average industry benchmarks of similar systems (Grade A from SUS scale). In the data visualization system, 14 minor usability problems were identified from 9 cognitive walkthroughs conducted with the High-Performance Unit (HPU) staff. Pre-post optimization information quality was subjectively assessed by administering a standardized questionnaire to the HPU members. The results indicated positive improvements in all of the information quality dimensions (with major improvements to the accessibility) relating to the S&C information flow. Additionally, the methods utilized in the study would be especially beneficial for sporting environments requiring cost effective and easily adoptable information flow digitization initiatives which need to be implemented by its internal staff members.

Analyzing international events through the lens of statistical physics: The case of Ukraine

During the last few years, statistical physics has received increasing attention as a framework for the analysis of real complex systems; yet, this is less clear in the case of international political events, partly due to the complexity in securing relevant quantitative data on them. Here, we analyze a detailed dataset of violent events that took place in Ukraine since January 2021 and analyze their temporal and spatial correlations through entropy and complexity metrics and functional networks. Results depict a complex scenario with events appearing in a non-random fashion but with eastern-most regions functionally disconnected from the remainder of the country-something opposing the widespread "two Ukraines" view. We further draw some lessons and venues for future analyses.

A systematic review of small sided games within rugby: Acute and chronic effects of constraints manipulation

Small-sided games is a commonly used training method to develop technical, tactical and physical qualities concurrently. However, a review of small-sided games in rugby football codes (e.g. rugby union, rugby league) is not available. This systematic review aims to investigate the acute responses and chronic adaptations of small-sided games within rugby football codes considering the constraints applied. Four electronical databases were systematically searched until August 2020. Acute and chronic studies investigating rugby football codes small-sided games, with healthy amateur and professional athletes were included. Twenty studies were eventually included: 4 acute and 1 chronic in rugby union, 13 acute and 2 chronic in rugby league. Acute studies investigated task and individual constraints. Chronic studies showed that small-sided games would be an effective training method to improve physical performance. Current research in rugby football codes is heavily biased towards investigating how manipulating constraints can affect the physical characteristics of small-sided games, with limited literature investigating the effect on technical skills, and no studies investigating tactical behaviour. Future research is needed to evidence the effects of constraint manipulation on technical and tactical behaviour of rugby football players in small-sided games, in addition to physical characteristics.

Contrasting chaotic with stochastic dynamics via ordinal transition networks

We introduce a representation space to contrast chaotic with stochastic dynamics. Following the complex network representation of a time series through ordinal pattern transitions, we propose to assign each system a position in a two-dimensional plane defined by the permutation entropy of the network (global network quantifier) and the minimum value of the permutation entropy of the nodes (local network quantifier). The numerical analysis of representative chaotic maps and stochastic systems shows that the proposed approach is able to distinguish linear from non-linear dynamical systems by different planar locations. Additionally, we show that this characterization is robust when observational noise is considered. Experimental applications allow us to validate the numerical findings and to conclude that this approach is useful in practical contexts.

Clinical Features and Treatment of Elapidae Bites: Report of Three Cases

This report describes two accidents, involving snakes of the Micrurus corallinus species, where compromising respiratory function was not observed and the specific anti-elapidic serum was the single therapy used, and a third incident, probably involving Micrurus frontalis, where neostigmine was used to remedy respiratory failure.

The structure and dynamics of multilayer networks

In the past years, network theory has successfully characterized the interaction among the constituents of a variety of complex systems, ranging from biological to technological, and social systems. However, up until recently, attention was almost exclusively given to networks in which all components were treated on equivalent footing, while neglecting all the extra information about the temporal- or context-related properties of the interactions under study. Only in the last years, taking advantage of the enhanced resolution in real data sets, network scientists have directed their interest to the multiplex character of real-world systems, and explicitly considered the time-varying and multilayer nature of networks. We offer here a comprehensive review on both structural and dynamical organization of graphs made of diverse relationships (layers) between its constituents, and cover several relevant issues, from a full redefinition of the basic structural measures, to understanding how the multilayer nature of the network affects processes and dynamics.

Explosive transitions to synchronization in networks of phase oscillators

The emergence of dynamical abrupt transitions in the macroscopic state of a system is currently a subject of the utmost interest. The occurrence of a first-order phase transition to synchronization of an ensemble of networked phase oscillators was reported, so far, for very particular network architectures. Here, we show how a sharp, discontinuous transition can occur, instead, as a generic feature of networks of phase oscillators. Precisely, we set conditions for the transition from unsynchronized to synchronized states to be first-order, and demonstrate how these conditions can be attained in a very wide spectrum of situations. We then show how the occurrence of such transitions is always accompanied by the spontaneous setting of frequency-degree correlation features. Third, we show that the conditions for abrupt transitions can be even softened in several cases. Finally, we discuss, as a possible application, the use of this phenomenon to express magnetic-like states of synchronization.

Topological measure locating the effective crossover between segregation and integration in a modular network

We introduce an easily computable topological measure which locates the effective crossover between segregation and integration in a modular network. Segregation corresponds to the degree of network modularity, while integration is expressed in terms of the algebraic connectivity of an associated hypergraph. The rigorous treatment of the simplified case of cliques of equal size that are gradually rewired until they become completely merged, allows us to show that this topological crossover can be made to coincide with a dynamical crossover from cluster to global synchronization of a system of coupled phase oscillators. The dynamical crossover is signaled by a peak in the product of the measures of intracluster and global synchronization, which we propose as a dynamical measure of complexity. This quantity is much easier to compute than the entropy (of the average frequencies of the oscillators), and displays a behavior which closely mimics that of the dynamical complexity index based on the latter. The proposed topological measure simultaneously provides information on the dynamical behavior, sheds light on the interplay between modularity and total integration, and shows how this affects the capability of the network to perform both local and distributed dynamical tasks.

Computation as an emergent feature of adaptive synchronization

We report on the spontaneous emergence of computation from adaptive synchronization of networked dynamical systems. The fundamentals are nonlinear elements, interacting in a directed graph via a coupling that adapts itself to the synchronization level between two input signals. These units can emulate different Boolean logics, and perform any computational task in a Turing sense, each specific operation being associated with a given network's motif. The resilience of the computation against noise is proven, and the general applicability is demonstrated with regard to periodic and chaotic oscillators, and excitable systems mimicking neural dynamics.

Complex networks analysis of obstructive nephropathy data

Congenital obstructive nephropathy (ON) is one of the most frequent nephropathy observed among newborns and children, and the first cause of end-stage renal diseases treated by dialysis or transplantation. This pathology is characterized by the presence of an obstacle in the urinary tract, e.g., stenosis or abnormal implantation of the urethra in the kidney. In spite of important advances, pathological mechanisms are not yet fully understood. In this contribution, the topology of complex networks created upon vectors of features for control and ON subjects is related with the severity of the pathology. Nodes in these networks represent genetic and metabolic profiles, while connections between them indicate an abnormal relation between their expressions. Resulting topologies allow discriminating ON subjects and detecting which genetic or metabolic elements are responsible for the malfunction.

Ureterorenoscopy with a flexible instrument

Flexible ureterorenoscopy should be routinely used at the Urological Centers that deal with urinary stones. Flexible instruments should be used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, allowing a safe exploration of the whole upper urinary tract. Thanks to their flexibility and to the active and passive deflection of their distal part, these instruments allowed to successfully treat several difficult situations, such as renal caliceal calculi in the lower calices or even in some middle/upper calices or in horseshoe kidneys. The therapeutic potential of this approach is enhanced by the large availability of ancillary instrumentation, such as baskets, grasps, holmium laser fibers, etc, which is continuously growing. On the other side, a steep learning curve of the technique is usually required for the surgeon. Furthermore, the intrinsic fragility of the instrument components and a potentially lower quality, when compared to that of the rigid and semi-rigid ureteroscopes, should be considered.

Study of barrier properties and chemical resistance of recycled PET coated with amorphous carbon through a plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) process

Many studies have been carried out in order to make bottle-to-bottle recycling feasible. The problem is that residual contaminants in recycled plastic intended for food packaging could be a risk to public health. One option is to use a layer of virgin material, named functional barrier, which prevents the contaminants migration process. This paper shows the feasibility of using polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycled for food packaging employing a functional barrier made from hydrogen amorphous carbon film deposited by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition (PECVD) process. PET samples were deliberately contaminated with a series of surrogates using a FDA protocol. After that, PET samples were coated with approximately 600 and 1200 Angstrons thickness of amorphous carbon film. Then, the migration tests using as food simulants: water, 10% ethanol, 3% acetic acid, and isooctane were applied to the sample in order to check the chemical resistance of the new coated material. After the tests, the liquid extracts were analysed using a solid-phase microextraction device (SPME) coupled to GC-MS.

Sex difference in sensitization to the locomotor effects of mazindol in rats

Male and female rats were treated daily for 7 days with mazindol (5, 10, and 20 mg/kg), an anorectic drug, and tested in the open field. Mazindol developed sensitization to its locomotor stimulatory effect in both sexes on day 7 with a nondose-dependent pattern of response. However, the locomotor activity appeared to be sex dependent, female rats being more sensitive. Following a challenge dose of mazindol (10 and 20 mg/kg) on day 10, a marked enhancement of locomotion was seen in female rats. These findings indicate that repeated administration of mazindol produces sex-dependent sensitization to its effect on locomotor behavior.

Effects of age on behavioral and physiological responses to carbaryl in rats

Motor, sensory and thermoregulatory functions were examined in young (3 months) and mature (12 months) rats following PO administration of single low doses (10 and 50 mg/kg) of carbaryl, a carbamate insecticide, and these effects were related to blood cholinesterase activity. Carbaryl 50 mg/kg decreased the frequency of ambulation in the open-field arena within 30 min while it enhanced the duration of haloperidol-induced catalepsy in both young and mature rats. Administration of carbaryl also resulted in an increased nociceptive threshold to thermic stimuli mainly in mature rats. An age-related reduction in body temperature was observed at 30, 60 and 90 min after injection. Activity of blood cholinesterase was reduced in young and mature rats at 30 and 60 min following carbaryl exposure. These results indicate that carbaryl can induce an age-related impairment on some behavioral and autonomic functions in rats correlated to the inhibition of cholinesterase activity.

Maneb enhances MPTP neurotoxicity in mice

The effects of acute administration of maneb (30 mg/kg, i.p.), an agricultural fungicide, combined with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP 50 mg/kg, i.p.), a dopaminergic neurotoxin, were examined on mouse locomotor activity and catalepsy test. The pretreatment with maneb significantly exacerbated the effects of MPTP on locomotion and catalepsy in mice. These results suggest that exposure to some pesticides might enhance motor dysfunction.

[The pharmacologic action of extracts of Polygonum punctatum Elliot (= P. acre HBK)]

In vivo pharmacological studies were carried out with the aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of P. punctatum Elliot. Previously we have made a phytochemical screening and a essay of acute toxicity. The extracts exhibited an inhibition of the carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema, at doses of 300 and 600 mg.kg-1 p.o. and the hydroalcoholic extract at a dose range of 100-600 mg.kg-1 p.o. reduced significantly the increase of the vascular permeability induced by histamine. The extracts showed antipyretic activity only by i.p. administration. The gastrointestinal propulsion of a charcoal suspension was affected by both extracts, but significantly only by the aqueous extract. They elicited bradycardia and lowered the arterial blood pressure, but they do not demonstrate analgesic and diuretic activities. The pharmacological effects assayed are discussed in relation to the chemical composition of this plant and also to its popular use.

[Ergospirometric evaluation of 53 physical exercises used in cardiological rehabilitation]

Fifty-three calisthenics used in a cardiac rehabilitation program were evaluated in a group of patients who, 30-60 days after myocardial infarction, had undergone a multistage symptom-limited bicycle exercise test without S-T segment modifications or arrhythmias. The following measurements were made oxygen uptake (VO2), oxygen uptake/Kg (VO2/Kg), ventilation/m' (VE), heart rate/m' (HR), systolic blood pressure (sBP) and METS. A good correlation was observed during the physical exercises between HR and VO2 (r = 0.59; p less than 0.001) and between HR and VO2/Kg (r = 0.64; p less than 0.001). Such correlation was similar to that observed during bicycle ergometric test. Lower values were obtained for the correlations between sBP and both VO2 and VO2/Kg, but they were still statistically significant (p less than 0.001). Heart rate and sBP were lower during calisthenics than during bicycle exercise from a VO2 level of 600-800 ml up. It is therefore possible to tailor a safe training program based on calisthenics whose level of energy expenditure is known: HRxsBP reached during such physical exercises will be lower than during bicycle ergometric test, VO2 being equal.
