Flipped Classroom Formats in a Problem-Based Learning Course: Experiences of First-Year Bachelor European Public Health Students

Objectives: Students would like to see more creativity and flexibility in the performance of problem-based learning (PBL). Therefore, we applied flipped classroom formats in a course of the Bachelor European Public Health at Maastricht University to investigate the experiences of the students. The main objective was to stimulate interaction between students mutual, and between students and teachers.

Methods: 304 first-year students following the course on “Ageing in Europe” in three academic years, were asked to fill out questions focussing on prior knowledge, preparation work, and group session parameters, e.g., duration, content, extent of interaction and format group session.

Results: In-class activities, such as debate, making a mind map, giving a pitch, role-play e.g., were highly appreciated by students, especially the interactivity and discussions with the experts during these sessions. Students felt they applied knowledge.

Conclusion: Flipped classroom formats can be used to extend the Maastricht University PBL design and students do recommend this. It can be a relevant and challenging answer on the articulated request for more creativity and flexibility in the regular PBL format.

Mapping Accessibility to Fertility Preservation for Trans Masculine Individuals in the Netherlands

Purpose: Since 2014 in the Netherlands, sterilization is no longer required for legal gender affirmation. Access to fertility preservation (FP) options is indispensable to grant equal reproductive rights to this population. This study aims to map existing literature on barriers and enabling factors for trans masculine individuals to access FP in the Netherlands after 2014. Methods: A scoping review method was conducted, including a database and a hand search complemented with informal consultations. Literature between 2014 and 2021 was searched. Results: A total of 38 peer-reviewed articles and 22 complementary gray literature sources were retrieved. Thematic analysis identified seven common themes: biological, psychological, training, language, law and legislation, economic, and sociocultural. The themes were clustered as patient-, health care provider (HCP)- and environment-related. Conclusion: The Netherlands offers progressive legislation and accommodating insurance agreements that favor FP for trans masculine individuals. However, the current readiness of HCPs to provide adapted and tailored care is arguable, and the capacity to access appropriate health services for trans masculine individuals is largely nonexistent outside of highly specialized health institutions. The implementation of both formal and informal education training programs for HCPs on transgender and gender diverse health needs-as well as inclusive language use-could benefit this community at large.

Between Charcot and Bernheim: The debate on hypnotism in fin-de-siècle Italy

In the late 1870s, a small group of Italian psychiatrists became interested in hypnotism in the wake of the studies conducted by the French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. Eager to engage in hypnotic research, these physicians referred to the scientific authority of French and German scientists in order to overcome the scepticism of the Italian medical community and establish hypnotism as a research subject based on Charcot's neuropathological model. In the following years, French studies on hypnotism continued to exert a strong influence in Italy. In the mid 1880s, studies on hypnotic suggestion by the Salpêtrière and Nancy Schools of hypnotism gave further impetus to research and therapeutic experimentation and inspired the emergence of an interpretative framework that combined theories by both hypnotic schools. By the end of the decade, however, uncertainties had arisen around both hypnotic theory and the therapeutic use of hypnotism. These uncertainties, which were linked to the crisis of the neuropathological paradigm that had to a large extent framed the understanding of hypnotism in Italy and the theoretical disagreements among the psychiatrists engaged in hypnotic research, ultimately led to a decline in interest in hypnotism in Italy.

Enrico Morselli's Psychology and "Spiritism": psychiatry, psychology and psychical research in Italy in the decades around 1900

This paper traces Enrico Morselli's intellectual trajectory from the 1870s to the early 1900s. His interest in phenomena of physical mediumship is considered against the backdrop of the theoretical developments in Italian psychiatry and psychology. A leading positivist psychiatrist and a prolific academic, Morselli was actively involved in the making of Italian experimental psychology. Initially sceptical of psychical research and opposed to its association with the 'new psychology', Morselli subsequently conducted a study of the physical phenomena produced by the medium Eusapia Palladino. He concluded that her phenomena were genuine and represented them as the effects of an unknown bio-psychic force present in all human beings. By contextualizing Morselli's study of physical mediumship within contemporary theoretical and disciplinary discourse, this study elaborates shifts in the interpretations of 'supernormal' phenomena put forward by leading Italian psychiatrists and physiologists. It demonstrates that Morselli's interest in psychical research stems from his efforts to comprehend the determinants of complex psychological phenomena at a time when the dynamic theory of matter in physics, and the emergence of neo-vitalist theories influenced the theoretical debates in psychiatry, psychology and physiology.
