Distribution and in-vitro bioaccessibility of potentially toxic metals in surface soils from a mining and a non-mining community in Ghana: implications for human health

The concentration and bioaccessibility of potentially toxic metals, including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, were determined in surface soil samples from a mining community (Kenyasi) and a non-mining community (Sunyani) in Ghana, to investigate the contribution of mining activities to the environmental burden of potentially toxic metals. The study found significant differences in metal concentrations (p < 0.05) in As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn, but no significant difference (p > 0.05) in Pb and Cr between the two communities. The study found a moderate correlation between pH and metal concentrations in the mining community and a moderate positive correlation with As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn in the non-mining community. The distribution pattern revealed elevated levels of toxic metals in the southeastern corridor of the mining community, which is close to a gold mine. Most heavy metals were concentrated in the commercial community's southern zone, with more residents and private elementary schools. Metal bioaccessibility was variable, and except for Cu and Zn, the mean bioaccessibility was less than 50% for a given metal. Contamination factor, geoaccumulation index, and soil enrichment factor suggested very high contamination of Cd, and a considerable to moderate contamination of As, Ni, Zn, and Cu at both the mining and non-mining communities. The above observations and the pollution and risk indices employed in this study confirmed that the mining community was more polluted (PLI = 2.145) than the non-mining community (PLI = 1.372). The total metal hazard (HI) exceeded thresholds by three and four times at non-mining and mining sites. Regular monitoring is necessary, especially in the mining community, to prevent soil metal accumulation.

Mercury contamination of two e-waste recycling sites in Ghana: an investigation into mercury pollution at Dagomba Line (Kumasi) and Agbogbloshie (Accra)

This study investigated mercury pollution at two e-waste recycling sites in Ghana-Dagomba Line in Kumasi and Agbogbloshie in Accra. A total of 129 soil samples taken at 100 m and 50 m resolutions, respectively, for Dagomba Line and Agbogbloshie, were analysed for mercury using a Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometry. Mercury concentrations from the recycling sites (ranging from 0.11 to 7.57 mg/kg Dagomba Line, and 0.01-4.36 mg/kg at Agbogbloshie) were significantly higher than that of the surrounding areas (0.01-0.17 mg/kg in Kumasi and 0.01-2.18 mg/kg in Accra) and unpolluted control sites (0.05 mg/kg in Kumasi and 0.02 mg/kg in Accra). The dismantling sites at both locations had the highest mercury concentrations. Furthermore, the concentrations were significantly higher at the Dagomba Line site in Kumasi than at Agbogbloshie, even though the Dagomba Line site is relatively recent. The mercury concentrations at both sites exceeded the pollution prevention and abatement level of 0.1 mg/kg. However, the estimated human health risk showed no potential human health effects. Moreover, the mercury concentrations in water and sediment (0.12-7.69 ng/L and 0.02-0.28 ng/L for Dagomba Line and Agbogbloshie, respectively) were below the US EPA standards. Findings from this study show that e-waste recycling can contaminate the topsoil with mercury, irrespective of the scale of the activity.

Potential health risk and bio-accessibility of metal and minerals in saltpetre (a food additive)

Food additives are used to enhance freshness, safety, appearance, flavour, and texture of food. Depending on the absorbed dose, exposure method, and length of exposure, heavy metals in diet may have a negative impact on human health. The X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Analyzer from Niton Thermo Scientific (Mobile Test S, NDTr-XL3t-86956, com 24) was used in this work to measure the heavy metal content in saltpetre, a food additive that mostly contains potassium nitrate. The average essential metal concentrations in the samples were determined to be 27044.27 ± 10905.18 mg kg^-1, 24521.10 ± 6564.28 mg kg^-1, 2418.33 ± 461.50 mg kg^-1, and 4.615 ± 3.59 mg kg^-1 for Ca, K, Fe and Zn respectively. Toxic metals (As, Pb) were present in the saltpetre samples at 4.13 ± 2.47 mg kg^-1 and 2.11 ± 1.87 mg kg^-1 average concentrations. No traces of mercury or cadmium were detected. Studies on exposure, health risks, and bio-accessibility identified arsenic as a significant risk factor for potential illnesses. The need to monitor heavy metal content of saltpetre and any potential health effects on consumers is brought to light by this study.

Evaluation of Scales of Tilapia Sp. and Sciaenops ocellatus as Low Cost and Green Adsorbent for fluoride Removal From Water

Water containing more than 1.5 mg/L of fluoride is considered toxic as it causes dental, kidney, and other health problems. With the purpose of helping alleviate these problems by exploring a treatment method for fluoride contamination, this study was to assess the suitability of scales of Tilapia Sp. and Sciaenops ocellatus as a cheaper source of adsorbent for the removal of fluoride from drinking water. The samples which were obtained from the Lapaz Market in Accra, Ghana, underwent treatment to eliminate any impurities. They were then ground into powder and treated with aluminum hydroxide [Al(OH)₃]. The treated samples were used for the removal of fluoride from spiked solutions prepared in the laboratory. Batch adsorption was performed by varying parameters such as adsorbent dose (1–8 g/L), initial concentration (2 mg/L to 10 mg/L), and contact time (30–300 min) at pH of 7. A one-way ANOVA was used to validate the significance of the defluoridation process with respect to the different experimental conditions. The optimum adsorbent dose, initial concentration, and contact time were found to be 4 g/L, 10 mg/L, and 300 min, respectively. The results revealed that the maximum percentage removal of fluoride was 76% by Tilapia Sp. and 70% by Sciaenops ocellatus at the optimum conditions. This is an indication that both Tilapia Sp. And Sciaenops ocellatus scales are suitable adsorbents for the removal of fluoride from water. The fluoride adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherm fitted the Freundlich Isotherm model better than the Langmuir Isotherm model. The adsorption intensity and adsorption capacity for Tilapia Sp. were 3.484 L/mg and 0.065 mg/g, and that of Sciaenops ocellatus 3.195 L/mg and 0.045 mg/g respectively.

Accumulation and bioaccessibility of toxic metals in root tubers and soils from gold mining and farming communities in the Ashanti region of Ghana

The presence of metal contaminants in agricultural soils and subsequent uptake by food crops can pose serious human health risk. In this study, we assessed the levels of toxic metals - arsenic, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, and zinc - in soils and some edible root tuber crops from two gold mining and two non-mining communities in Ghana to evaluate the potential human health risks associated with exposure to these metals. Concentrations of the metals in 154 soil and edible root tuber samples were analyzed using field portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometer prior to confirmation by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Bioaccessibility of the metals was determined using an in vitro physiologically based extraction technique. Concentrations of the metals were generally higher in the gold mining communities than in the non-mining communities. The contamination indices indicated low to moderate contamination of the soil and food crops. Bioaccessibility for the metals varied from 1.7% (Fe) to 62.3 (Mn). Overall, the risks posed by the metals upon consumption of the tubers were low.

Heavy metal contamination and health risk assessment of mechanically milled delicacy called fufu

Contamination of food by heavy metals is a concern as consumption of contaminated food is one of the most likely human exposure routes to metals. Fufu is a delicacy in Ghana consumed mainly by the Akans. Human exposure to some heavy metals (Cr, Fe, Zn, Mn and Ni) through mechanically processed fufu consumption was analysed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer and ascertaining consumer awareness of potential exposure by questionnaire administration. A total of 30 milled and un-milled fufu samples (cassava and plantain) were sampled from Bomso, Kotei, Ayeduase, Ayigya and Kentikrono, all within Kumasi. The results showed that Fe and Zn levels after milling were elevated in the range: 2.816–7.297 and 0.753–7.529 mg/kg, respectively. The concentrations of Fe and Zn were below the Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization (FAO/WHO) permissible limits except Zn concentration at Bomso. Cr, Mn and Ni were below the detection limit (0.05). Hazard quotients and indices were less than the US Environmental Protection Agency’s permitted level of one, indicating no possible harm to consumers. Findings from the questionnaire administration indicated a complete lack of knowledge on consumer exposure due to the food processing method.

Mineral and proximate composition of the meat and shell of three snail species

Meat is a vital source of nutrients for human wellbeing and health; however, recent studies suggest a decline in meat preference as a protein source due to some health problems associated with meat intake. This study evaluates the levels of essential elements (Mn, Mg, P, Ca, K, Cu, Na, Zn and Fe) and proximate composition (protein, fat, moisture, carbohydrate, fibre and ash) of three snail species namely; Achatina achatina, Achatina fulica and Archachatina marginata species from the Kumasi Central Market. The mineral content and proximate composition of the three land snail species' shell and meat were analysed using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry and other Standard Methods of Analysis. The study revealed that the three snail species differed in the composition of significant nutrients and trace elements in meat. It is evident from this study that the consumption of snail meat can promote good human health, with Archachatina marginata having the best nutritional value. In the meat from the three snail species, a strong significant positive correlation between Ca and P levels was observed, and the Cu and Fe (p < 0.05). In both the proximate and mineral analysis, each meat parameter was correspondingly higher than that of the shell for all the snail species, except for ash and Ca contents. The estimated daily intakes of Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu were lower compared with the tolerable daily intake, suggesting that the essential elements are at acceptable levels. Therefore, consumers of these land snails will gain the benefits of the proximate and mineral constituents. The shells can also be utilised as food supplements for livestock and eliminate the burden of managing snail shell waste.

Chemical (C, N, S, black carbon, soot and char) and stable carbon isotope composition of street dusts from a major West African metropolis: Implications for source apportionment and exposure

Street dust is a major source of pollution and exposure of residents of West Africa to toxic chemicals. There is however, limited knowledge about the chemical composition and sources of street dust in urban areas of sub-Saharan Africa. The total carbon (TC), nitrogen (TN), sulfur (TS) and the stable carbon isotope ratios (δ¹³C) contents of street dust sampled from 25 sites distributed across Kumasi (a metropolis in Ghana with a population of ca. 2 million) were determined. In addition, black carbon (BC) and their subunits (soot and char) in these samples were also determined. The concentrations of TC, TN and TS in the dusts were 5-71 mg g^-1, 0.3-4.3 mg g^-1 and 0.2-1.4 mg g^-1, respectively. The concentrations of TC, TN and TS were higher than at the background site of the metropolis by a factor of 5.1 (range: 1.7-12), 3.9 (1.1-13) and 2.8 (0.7-5), respectively. The BC, char and soot concentrations in these samples averaged 1.6 mg g^-1 (0.13-4.4), 1.2 mg g^-1 (0.08-3.7) and 0.36 mg g^-1 (0.05-1.5), respectively. The concentrations of BC, char and soot in the street dust were higher than in the background location by factors of 5 (range: 0.8-13), 6 (0.7-17) and 3 (0.5-12), respectively. The TC, TN, TS, BC, soot and char concentrations were positively correlated with each other and with polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs, oxygenated PAHs and azaarenes from a previous study), indicating their common origin and fate. The δ¹³C values ranged from -27 to -24 [‰], with more polluted sites being more depleted in ¹³C. Based on the chemical composition of the street dusts, the 25 sites could be clustered into four groups by hierarchical cluster analysis which reflect areas of varying anthropogenic influence and, accordingly, exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Distribution and bioaccessibility of metals in urban soils of Kumasi, Ghana

To assess the potential risk associated with incidental ingestion of metal contaminants in soils from areas where most of the commercial activities are concentrated in Kumasi, Ghana, total and bioaccessible concentrations of metals were determined in surface soil samples. Arsenic, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn in some of the samples exceeded international environmental soil quality guidelines. The use of geoaccumulation and enrichment factor indices also indicated high contamination in select areas of the commercial hub. Multivariate analyses of the data suggested that As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were mainly derived from anthropogenic sources whereas Al, Cd, Hg, and Fe were attributable to either soil parent materials or atmospheric deposition. Based on the total metal concentrations, the risk associated with exposure to metals in the contaminated soils was found to be high; the hazard quotient based on the mean concentration for a child receptor was greater than 1 for As, Cr, and Pb. Metal bioaccessibility was variable; decreasing in the order Zn (73 ± 15%) > Pb (62 ± 16%) > Cu (47 ± 14%) > Co (28 ± 11%) > Ni (24 ± 11%) > As (14 ± 13%) > Cr (2.8 ± 2.6%). Incorporation of the bioaccessibility data in the risk characterization resulted in hazard quotients of less than 1 indicating that the general risk associated with incidental ingestion of metals in the soils for both children and adults is low except for the contaminated hotspots. Lead and As contributed most to the overall risk.

Heavy metal content and potential health risk of geophagic white clay from the Kumasi Metropolis in Ghana

Geophagia is the craving for non-food substances and commonly practiced among pregnant women and children. Consumption of geophagic clay samples can have serious implications on the health of the consumers as a result of the presence of toxic metals such as Pb, As, Hg and Cd. This study sought to determine the levels of heavy metals in the studied geophagic clay samples and to determine the potential risks of heavy metals as cumulative carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to the health of the consumers via oral (ingestion) and dermal exposure routes. A total of thirty (30) white clay samples were analysed using Niton Thermo scientific XRF Analyser (Mobile Test S, NDTr-XL3t-86956, com 24). The clay samples were found to contain essential elements such as Ca, Fe, K and Zn as well as toxic metals such as As and Pb. There were isolated cases of the presence of Hg and all samples had Cd levels below detection. Health risk indices such as hazard quotient and cancer risk were calculated and the results indicated that consumers are likely to suffer from cancer through ingestion of geophagic clay. Bioaccessibility studies were done on zinc and it did not indicate any potential toxicity due to zincs essential nature. The levels of heavy metals in some of the geophagic clay consumed by some residents in the Kumasi were high compared to the Permitted Maximum Tolerable Daily Intake (PMTDI) by (WHO/FAO) and may pose potential health threat over time.

Risk assessment of mineral and heavy metal content of selected tea products from the Ghanaian market

Food consumption is the most likely route of human exposure to metals. Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) is among the most widely consumed non-alcoholic beverages. Concentrations of heavy metals and minerals in tea from 15 different brands in Kumasi, Ghana were measured to assess the health risk associated with their consumption. The mineral and metal contents (Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, As, Cd) were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (Z-8100 polarized Zeeman). The results revealed that the mean concentrations were in the order: Ca > Fe > As > Cd > Zn > Pb. The average contents of Ca, Fe, Zn, Pb, Cd, and As in the samples were 94.08, 6.15, 0.20, 0.16, 0.36, and 1.66 mg/kg, respectively. All the minerals and heavy metals were below the maximum permissible limits stipulated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and US Pharmacopeia (USP). Metal-to-metal correlation indicated strong correlations between As/Zn, Cd/Zn, Cd/As, and Pb/As pairs. Factor analysis demonstrated a clear separation between minerals, grouped on one side, and heavy metals, clustered on another side. Both the target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) levels in green tea were far below 1, suggesting that consumption of green tea should pose no potential risk to human health. However, carcinogenic risk levels for arsenic were high; R > 10(-6). The results showed that residents in Kumasi consume tea could be at risk from exposure to these heavy metals and minerals.

Occurrence, distribution and health risk from polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs, oxygenated-PAHs and azaarenes) in street dust from a major West African Metropolis

Scientific evidence suggests that the burden of disease on urban residents of sub-Saharan African Countries is increasing, partly as a result of exposure to elevated concentrations of toxic environmental chemicals. However, characterization of the levels, composition pattern and sources of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in environmental samples from African cities is still lacking. This study measured the PAHs, oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs) and azaarene (AZAs) content of street dusts collected from Kumasi, Ghana (a major metropolis located in the tropical forest zone of West Africa). The ∑Alkyl+parent-PAHs, ∑OPAHs and ∑AZAs concentration in street dust averaged 2570 ng g(-1) (range: 181-7600 ng g(-1)), 833 ng g(-1) (57-4200 ng g(-1)) and 73 ng g(-1) (3.3-240 ng g(-1)), respectively. The concentrations of ∑Alkyl+parent-PAHs were strongly correlated (n=25) with ∑OPAHs (r=0.96, p<0.01) and ∑AZAs (r=0.94, p<0.01). The ∑OPAHs concentrations were also strongly correlated with ∑AZAs (r=0.91, p<0.01). Concentrations of individual PAHs in these street dusts were enriched at between 12 and 836 compared to their average concentrations in background soils from same city, demonstrating the high influence of traffic emissions. Several individual OPAHs and AZAs had higher concentrations than their related and often monitored parent-PAHs. The estimated incremental lifetime cancer risks due to the parent-PAHs in street dusts was >10(-6) indicating high risk of contracting cancer from exposure to street dust from Kumasi. The contribution of OPAHs, AZAs, and alkyl-PAHs in street dust to cancer risk could not be quantified because of lack of toxicity equivalency factors for these compounds; however this could be significant because of their high concentration and known higher toxicity of some polar PACs and alkyl-PAHs than their related parent-PAHs.

The use of lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA) as sorbent for PAHs removal from water

Lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA) has been explored as a sorbent for the removal of PAHs (phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene) from water. The efficacy of LECA as a sorbent for PAHs was assessed using contact time, mass of sorbent and sorption isotherms in a series of batch experiments. Maximum (optimum) sorption was reached at 21 h after which the amount of PAHs sorbed remained almost constant. Batch experiments were conducted by shaking a 100ml solution mixture of individual PAHs (containing 0.02 mg/L) with LECA. The maximum sorption was 70.70, 70.82 and 72.12%, respectively for phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene when a mass of 0.2 g of sorbent was used. There was an increase in sorption as a result of an increase in mass of sorbent until a maximum was reached at a mass of 4.0 g LECA with 92.61, 93.91 and 94.15% sorption of phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene respectively. Sorption data were fitted to the linearised forms of the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models to determine the water-LECA partitioning coefficient. Physical sorption caused by the aromatic nature of the compounds was the main mechanism that governed the removal process while the hydrophobicity of the PAHs also influenced the sorption capacity. LECA can be used as an alternative method for aqueous PAHs removal.

The use of anthracene as a model compound in a comparative study of hydrous pyrolysis methods for industrial waste remediation

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are very stable compounds and tend to bioaccumulate in the environment due to their high degree of conjugation and aromaticity. Hydrous pyrolysis is explored as a technique for the treatment of industrial water containing PAH, using anthracene as a model compound. The reactivity of anthracene under a range of temperatures and durations are studied in this paper. Aliquots of 1.0-10.0mg of anthracene in a range of 1.0-5.0 mL of H(2)O are subjected to hydrous pyrolysis under varied conditions of temperature, reagents and duration. The conditions include oxidising systems comprising distilled water, hydrogen peroxide and Nafion-SiO(2) solid catalyst in water; and reducing systems of formic acid and formic acid/Nafion-SiO(2)/Pd-C catalysts to assess a range of redox reaction conditions. Oxygen in air played a role in some of the reaction conditions. Pyrolysed products were identified and quantified by the use of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The major products were anthrone, anthraquinone, xanthone from oxidation; and multiple hydro-anthracene derivatives from reductive hydogenation. The nature of reaction conditions influenced the extent of anthracene degradation. The products formed are more reactive (less stable) as compared to anthracene the starting material and will therefore be less persistent in the environment.

Assessment of the quality of water from hand-dug wells in ghana

This study focused upon the determination of physicochemical and microbial properties, including metals, selected anions and coliform bacteria in drinking water samples from hand-dug wells in the Kumasi metropolis of the Republic of Ghana. The purpose was to assess the quality of water from these sources. Ten different water samples were taken from different parts of Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti region of Ghana and analyzed for physicochemical parameters including pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, alkalinity total hardness and coliform bacteria. Metals and anions analyzed were Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, NO(3) (-), NO(2) (-), SO(4) (2-), PO(4) (2-), F(-) and Cl(-). Bacteria analysed were total coliform and Escherichia coli.THE DATA SHOWED VARIATION OF THE INVESTIGATED PARAMETERS IN SAMPLES AS FOLLOWS: pH, 6.30-0.70; conductivity (EC), 46-682 muS/cm; PO(4) (3-), 0.67-76.00 mg/L; F(-), 0.20-0.80 mg/L; NO(3) (-), 0-0.968 mg/L; NO(2) (-), 0-0.063 mg/L; SO(4) (2-), 3.0-07.0 mg/L; Fe, 0-1.2 mg/L; Mn, 0-0.018 mg/L. Total coliform and Escherichia coli were below the minimum detection limit (MDL) of 20 MPN per 100 ml in all the samples. The concentrations of most of the investigated parameters in the drinking water samples from Ashanti region were within the permissible limits of the World Health Organization drinking water quality guidelines.
