[Breast adenocarcinoma: critical analysis of sentinel lymph node histopathological results of 542 procedures]. Bull Cancer 2005; 92:983-7. Abstract
Between February 2001 and March 2003, 542 sentinel lymph node procedures were performed for localised breast carcinoma (T0-T1, N0, M0) without any previous treatment. Frozen sections were performed in 515 cases and they did not reveal metastases in 446 cases. Fifty-two micrometastases < 2 mm and 18 macrometastases were reported by definitive histopathological exam. Axillary clearance was performed in 50/70 patients (38 with micrometastases and 12 for macrometastases). Modalities of histopathological procedure are discussed and particularly number and interval of serial slides with or without immunochemistry ; 81.8% (36/44) of micrometastases were detected on the two first serial sections. Decisional value of axillary clearance performed in case of micrometastases is also evaluated.

Abstract
We studied the patterns of H19 expression in normal, hyperplastic and neoplastic human uterine tissues. H19 RNAs were detected by an in situ hybridisation technique (ISH). In both normal and pathological conditions, H19 was expressed in stromal and myometrial cells, but never in epithelial cells. 34/48 carcinomas overexpressed H19 compared with the expression in normal tissues. This high expression was frequently observed in the vicinity of malignant epithelial cells. This suggests that the level of H19 RNA synthesis could be the result of epithelium/stroma interactions. We also demonstrated that several cancerous or immortalised breast epithelial cells release factors into the culture medium, which in turn stimulate H19 expression in stromal cells. The level of H19 expression, estimated by ISH, was not significantly correlated with histological type when all types were considered together (P = 0.108), but was highly correlated to one type of cancer, i.e. carcinomas with an epidermoid component (P = 0.0015). The level of H19 expression was also strongly correlated with tumour invasion of the reproductive organs (P = 0.006) and significantly correlated with neoplastic cell invasion of the myometrium (P = 0.048). In conclusion, our results indicate that H19 overexpression is correlated with the progression of the disease and we propose that this frequent overexpression of the gene in the myometrium and in stroma is a reaction to pathological cell proliferation.

Abstract
Adult head and neck soft tissue sarcomas (AHNSTS) are rare, and data concerning treatment results are spare. To assess clinico-pathological characteristics, management prognostic factors, and survival of AHNSTS, we reviewed our experience of 28 recent successive new cases. Data were collected from a retrospective database (1997-2002). Aggressive fibromatosis, dermatofibrosarcoma, Kaposi sarcoma, chondrosarcoma and osteogenic sarcoma were excluded. Univariate analysis for prognostic factors was performed with chi2 test with Yates correction. The median age was 45.7 years (range: 18-86). The male/female ratio was 15/13. The most common subtypes was rhabdomyosarcoma (seven cases). Twenty-two patients presented with previous inadequate resection performed elsewhere before admission. The most common location was neck muscles (11 cases). Nineteen patients had surgery (complete resection in 13 cases). Associated treatments were neoadjuvant chemotherapy, adjuvant chemotherapy and postoperative radiotherapy in respectively, 4, 3 and 10 cases. The 2-year overall survival was 56%. Rhabdomyosarcomas (p = 0.005) and inadequate resection (p = 0.04) were associated with poor outcome. Large resection of AHNSTS in a multimodality approach may afford the best chance of disease control.

Abstract
Little is known about epidemiology of adults soft tissue and visceral sarcomas (ASTS). The frequency of previous cancers and associated genetic diseases has been analyzed out of 493 ASTS, treated between 1997 and 2002 at Oscar Lambret Cancer Center. Median age is 51, sex ratio is close to 1. Liposarcomas and malignant fibrous histiocytofibromas are the two main types (respectively 104 and 86 cases). Upper and lower limbs are the two main locations (respectively 176 and 75 cases). Fifteen patients had associated genetic disease, including 12 cases of Recklinghausen diseases. 7 out of those 15 patients have neurosarcoma. 30 patients have previous cancers, including 7 breast cancers, 3 lymphomas and 3 chronic lymphocytic leukemias. Four out of those 30 patients have two different previous cancers. 13 patients have radiation-induced sarcomas, after an average 10-year-period, and an average dose of 53 Gy. Undifferenciated sarcomas are the main histologic type (8/13), followed by angiosarcomas (2/13). Radiation-induced sarcomas are located in the chest wall (7/13), in pelvis (2/13) and head and neck (2/13). Those sarcomas are high grade (10 grade III tumours). ASTS epidemiology is complex with different risk factors depending on histologic type.

Abstract
Determination of the HER2/neu (HER2) status in breast carcinoma has become necessary for the selection of breast cancer patients for trastuzumab therapy. Amplification of the gene analysed by fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) or overexpression of the protein determined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) are the two major methods to establish this status. A strong correlation has been previously demonstrated between these two methods. However, FISH is not always feasible in routine practice and weakly positive IHC tumours (2+) do not always correspond to a gene amplification. Our study was performed in order to evaluate the contribution of chromogenic in situ hybridisation (CISH), which enables detection of the gene copies through an immunoperoxidase reaction. CISH was performed in 79 breast carcinomas for which the HER2 status was previously determined by IHC and FISH. The results of IHC, FISH and CISH were compared for each tumour. CISH procedures were successful in 95% of our cases. Whatever the IHC results, we found a very good concordance (96%) between CISH and FISH. Our study confirms that CISH may be an alternative to FISH for the determination of the gene amplification status in 2+ tumours. Our results allow us to think that, in many laboratories, CISH may also be an excellent method to calibrate the IHC procedures or, as a quality control test, to check regularly that the IHC signal is in agreement with the gene status.

Abstract
Soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities are currently treated with more conservative and functional approaches, combining surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The role of external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy has been defined through randomised studies performed in the 80's and 90's. However, the ubiquity of tumour location for these tumours makes difficult a systematic definition of local treatments. Tumour volume definition is based on pre and post surgical imaging (MRI) and on described pathological report. The clinical target volume will take into account quality of the resection and anatomical barriers and will be based on an anatomy and not only on safety margins around the tumour bed. General rules for this irradiation (doses, volumes) and principal results will be presented.

BACKGROUND Histologic grade is said to be the most important prognostic factor in adult soft tissue sarcomas (STS), but most grading systems have been tested in the overall sarcoma group and the predictive value of histologic grade needs to be assessed specifically for each of the histologic categories. METHODS From 1980 to 1994, 1240 nonmetastatic patients were entered in the French STS database. The following parameters were studied: patient's age and gender, previous history, tumor location, size and depth, neurovascular or bone involvement (NBI), histologic type and subtype, and grade (the French Federation of Cancer Centers [FNCLCC] system). Median follow-up for the survivors was 88 months; only 5% of patients were lost to follow-up. The authors performed univariate and multivariate analyses for metastasis-free survival for the overall sarcoma group and for every main histologic type. RESULTS In order of importance, parameters were respectively retained as independent predictors of metastasis as follows: grade, tumor size, NBI and tumor depth for the overall group, grade and NBI for malignant fibrous histiocytomas (n = 349), tumor size, histologic subtype and grade for liposarcomas (n = 188), NBI, grade and tumor size for leiomyosarcomas (n = 148), grade and NBI for synovial sarcomas (n = 125), grade for unclassified sarcomas (n = 140), and sarcomas of other types (n = 158). No parameter was significant for malignant schwannomas (n = 72) or for rhabdomyosarcomas (n = 60). CONCLUSION In this study, histologic grade appeared as an independent predictor of metastasis development in the main histologic types of adult STS, with the exception of malignant schwannomas and rhabdomyosarcomas.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify most significant and therapeutically relevant prognostic factors in adults with localized primary synovial sarcomas (SS) and to confirm the usefulness of the French Federation of Cancer Centers (FNCLCC) grading system, the prognostic impact of which has been already proven in soft tissue sarcomas. PATIENTS AND METHODS Data on 128 patients with nonmetastatic SS collected from a cooperative database by the FNCLCC Sarcoma Group between 1980 and 1994 were studied retrospectively. Immunohistochemistry was performed at diagnosis in 77 cases (61%). The tumors were classified as biphasic (n = 45), monophasic fibrous (n = 72), and poorly differentiated (n = 10) subtypes. Histologic grade was determined according to the FNCLCC method, and vascular invasion was assessed in every case. RESULTS The 5-year disease-specific survival (DSS) rate for this series of patients with localized SS was 62.9% (+/- 9.6% [SD]) with a median follow-up time of 37 months (range, 8 to 141 months). In multivariate analysis, the adverse risk factors associated with decreased DSS were International Union Against Cancer/American Joint Committee on Cancer stage III/IVA disease, male sex, and truncal tumor locations. For metastasis-free survival (MFS), disease stage III/IVA, tumor necrosis, and monophasic subtypes were the major factors associated with a less favorable prognosis. Separately, when not using disease stage, tumor necrosis, and mitotic activity, histologic grade became the most significant prognostic factor for both DSS and MFS. In addition, larger tumors and older patients become associated with a significantly worse prognosis. Independent adverse risk factors for local recurrence-free survival included histologic grade 3 and truncal tumor location. CONCLUSION These data confirm that not all SS present the same severe outcome. High-risk patients identified on the basis of these parameters may qualify for an aggressive treatment approach.

Abstract
At the turn of this century, the evidence of the benefits of a concurrent chemo-radiotherapy in locally advanced tumors and the development of mini-invasive surgery (laparoscopic and radical vaginal surgery) are the two main advances in the management of cervical carcinomas. From a personal experience of 304 cervical carcinomas, the different techniques of laparoscopy used in cervical carcinomas are addressed and discussed. Their long-term results when involved in the management protocols of cervical carcinomas at different stages are reported. From this series, some conclusions are drawn: 1) laparoscopy can spare a laparotomy in early-stage node-negative patients with low tumoral volume; 2) it can spare a systematic extended-field radiation therapy in high-risk patients with node-negative para-aortic exploration; 3) it can spare surgery in patients with a centro-pelvic advanced stage or recurrence, possibly candidates for an exenterative procedure, if occult spread is found in the intra- or retroperitoneal areas. The more and more frequent combination of the mini-invasive surgery for staging and treatment and radiotherapy or chemotherapy explains the need for new protocols of a more and more complex and specialized management.

Basic fibroblast growth factor receptors and their prognostic value in human breast cancer. Clin Cancer Res 1998; 4:2939-47. Abstract
We performed a saturation binding study with 125I-labeled FGF (fibroblast growth factor)-2 in a nonselected series of 250 human primary breast cancers. Two hundred twenty-five breast cancer biopsies possessed bFGFR (basic FGF receptor). The median dissociation constant was 0.35 nM (range, 0.014-1.9), and the median concentration was 1126 fmol/mg protein (range, 49-7328). FGFR-1 was localized, using a specific monoclonal antibody, in cancerous cells and in epithelial cells in normal breast or in benign tumors. In all of the tissues studied, light stromal cell staining was also observed. Thus, the localization of FGFR-1 in carcinoma cells supports the hypothesis that an important part of FGF-2 binding reflects binding to FGFR-1. bFGFR concentrations were positively correlated to estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor levels. Cox univariate analyses showed that the bFGFR (> or = upper quartile) was associated to longer relapse-free survival [P = 0.004; RR (risk ratio), 0.46] and overall survival (P = 0.001; RR, 0.35); age, estrogen receptor levels, progesterone receptor levels, node involvement, tumor diameter, and histoprognostic grading were prognostic, also. In Cox multivariate analyses, only the bFGFR, age, node involvement, and histoprognostic grading were prognostic factors; the bFGFR was associated with longer relapse-free survival (P = 0.03; RR, 0.4) and overall survival (P = 0.009; RR, 0.3). The present study confirms that FGF could be an important regulator of human breast cancer growth and that patients with a high level of bFGFR had a better prognosis.

Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests that E-selectin contributes to tumor growth and metastasis. E-selectin may increase tumoral angiogenesis and the adhesion of tumoral cells to endothelial cells at distant sites. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between concentrations of circulating soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin) and clinical, pathological, and biological features in patients with breast cancer (BC). Concentrations of sE-selectin were analyzed by an ELISA method in sera from 113 patients with metastatic BC, 30 patients with primary inflammatory BC, 105 patients with primary noninflammatory BC, and 42 healthy controls. These concentrations were analyzed in terms of the clinical and pathological features of the tumors as well as in terms of the concentrations of serum inflammatory parameters (erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C reactive protein, interleukin 1 beta, and tumor necrosis factor alpha), the response to chemotherapy or hormone therapy, and the survival duration. Tumoral angiogenesis was also assessed in 68 patients with primary noninflammatory BC who had had primary surgery. The mean concentration of sE-selectin in the metastatic BC group was significantly higher than the mean concentration found in the healthy control group (33.5 versus 21.8 ng/ml; P < 0.01). In metastatic BC, the mean concentration of sE-selectin was significantly higher in patients with liver metastasis than in patients without liver metastasis (55.3 versus 26.0 ng/ml; P < 10(-5). The univariate analysis showed that high concentrations of sE-selectin were associated with reduced overall survival (P < 0.05), but this probably reflected the association between high concentrations of sE-selectin and liver metastasis. In patients with primary noninflammatory BC, a negative correlation was found between sE-selectin concentrations and the tumoral microvessel count (r = -0.47; P = 10(-4). In patients with primary inflammatory or noninflammatory BC, no correlation was found between concentrations of sE-selectin and tumor size, lymph node involvement, response to chemotherapy or hormone therapy, and survival. No correlation was found between the concentrations of sE-selectin and serum inflammatory parameters in any of the patient groups. This study suggests that in patients with metastatic BC, levels of sE-selectin are higher in the presence of liver metastasis. In patients with primary BC, high concentrations seem to be associated with reduced tumoral angiogenesis. Although several studies have previously demonstrated that the expression of cell surface E-selectin enhances the metastatic process, the shedding of sE-selectin in circulation may be considered a mechanism of inhibition of tumor progression.

Abstract
A case of epithelioid sarcoma in the tongue is reported. The patient, a 35 year old woman, presented with a non-ulcerated painful lesion of the tongue. Microscopically, the tumour was characterised by multiple coalescent nodules with central geographic necrosis infiltrating the lingual muscle. The tumour cells were epithelioid with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and atypical nuclei. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells stained for vimentin, keratin, and epithelial membrane antigen. These morphological and immunohistochemical appearances led to the diagnosis of epithelioid sarcoma of the tongue. Seven years later, the patient died with metastatic dissemination to the scalp, lungs, and brain. No case of epithelioid sarcoma arising in the tongue has been described previously.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES In order to specify the indications for conservative surgery and preoperative therapeutic approaches of soft tissues sarcomas (STS), we looked for the clinico-pathological parameters associated with the failure to obtain a complete removal (CRm) of the tumor. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed a series of 592 cases of primary non-metastatic STS. Surgery was performed in 495 cases as a primary treatment and in 88 cases after chemo- or radiotherapy. Nine patients were treated by chemotherapy-radiotherapy. In a univariate analysis, 20 parameters were tested for their association with CRm. A multivariate analysis was then used to define the independent parameters linked to the achievement of a CRm. RESULTS In the univariate analysis, 15 parameters were found to be linked to the achievement of a CRm. Three of them proved to be independent in the multivariate analysis: T in the TNM classification, tumor location, and tumor necrosis. By the combination of these risk factors, four groups of patients were defined, with respective rates of CRm of 97% (no factor), 95% (one factor), 70% (two factors), and 48% (three factors). CONCLUSIONS The achievement of a CRm after surgery of STS depends not only on the accessibility of the lesion, but also on tumor aggressiveness, a reflection of which is necrosis. The detection of necrosis by imaging procedures may thus help predicting the resectability of tumors and defining the indications for neoadjuvant therapies, likely to broaden the use of conservative surgery.

Comparative study of the National Cancer Institute and French Federation of Cancer Centers Sarcoma Group grading systems in a population of 410 adult patients with soft tissue sarcoma. Abstract
PURPOSE Several histologic grading systems have been validated in soft tissue sarcomas (STS), but no system is currently accepted worldwide. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and French Federation of Cancer Centers Sarcoma Group (FNCLCC) systems were examined comparatively in the same population of patients with STS to determine which system is the best prognosticator with regard to metastasis development and tumor mortality. PATIENTS AND METHODS Four hundred ten adult patients with nonmetastatic STS were examined. Histologic grade was established according to the NCI and FNCLCC systems in each case. The prognostic value of both systems was examined using univariate and multivariate (Cox's model) analyses, and special attention was devoted to tumors with discordant grades. RESULTS In univariate analysis, both the NCI and FNCLCC systems were of prognostic value to predict metastasis development and tumor mortality. In multivariate analysis, high-grade tumors, irrespective of the system used, size > or = 10 cm, and deep location were found to be independent prognostic factors for the advent of metastases. Tumor grade had a higher predictive value than size or depth, and higher prognostic weight was assigned to the FNCLCC grading system in Cox models. Grade discrepancies were observed in 34.6% of the cases. An increased number of grade 3 STS, a reduced number of grade 2 STS, and a better correlation with overall and metastasis-free survival within subpopulations with discordant grades were observed in favor of the FNCLCC system. CONCLUSION The FNCLCC system showed slightly increased ability to predict distant metastasis development and tumor mortality. The use of this system to evaluate STS aggressiveness might be favored.

Abstract
PURPOSE To define the prognostic factors in adult patients with locally controlled soft tissue sarcoma (STS) and to determine which patients should be considered for adjuvant treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS Five hundred forty-six patients with a nonmetastatic and locally controlled STS, collected in a cooperative data base by the French Federation of Cancer Centers (FNCLCC) Sarcoma Group from 1980 and 1989, were studied. Histologic slides of all patients were collegially reviewed. Initial treatment consisted of complete tumor resection with amputation in only 4% of the patients. Adjuvant radiotherapy was administered to 57.9% and adjuvant chemotherapy to 31%. Relationships between tumor characteristics were analyzed, and univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using Cox models for the hazards rate of tumor mortality, development of distant metastasis, and strictly local recurrence. RESULTS Unfavorable characteristics with an independent prognostic value for tumor mortality were: grade 3 (P = 3 x 10(-10)), male sex (P = 1.5 x 10(-5)), no adjuvant chemotherapy (P = 5.4 x 10(-5)), tumor size > or = 5 cm (P = 3.8 x 10(-3)), and deep location (P = 4.6 x 10(-3)). Unfavorable characteristics for the development of distant metastasis were: grade 3 (P = 4 x 10(-12)), no adjuvant chemotherapy (P = 6.4 x 10(-4)), tumor size > or = 10 cm (P = 9.8 x 10(-4)), and deep location (P = 1.3 x 10(-3)). For the development of local recurrence, the unfavorable characteristics were: no adjuvant radiotherapy (P = 3.6 x 10(-6)), poor surgery (local excision) (P = 2 x 10(-4)), grade 3 (P = 7.6 x 10(-4)), and deep location (P = 10(-2)). Grade, depth, and tumor size were used to define groups of patients according to the metastatic risk. Adjuvant chemotherapy was beneficial in terms of overall survival and metastasis-free survival in grade 3 tumor patients only. Despite worse characteristics concerning tumor depth, tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) and American Joint Committee (AJC)/International Union Against Cancer (UICC) classifications and grade in patients with adjuvant radiotherapy, the latter experienced significantly fewer local recurrences than patients with no radiotherapy. CONCLUSION Grade, tumor depth, and tumor size could be used to select patients with a high metastatic risk, for which adjuvant chemotherapy could be beneficial.

Abstract
To assess the precise role of IGF1 in benign and malignant breast diseases, we analysed the tissular localisation, characterised, and quantified specific insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) binding sites in these heterogenous tissues, using histo-autoradiographic analysis (HAA). The 125I-IGF1 binding was performed on frozen tissue sections and analysed using 3H Ultrofilm autoradiography coupled to computerised image analysis. Competitive binding experiments using unlabelled IGF1, IGF2 and insulin showed that the tissues exhibited typical type I IGF binding sites. This specificity was confirmed by the use of alpha IR-3 monoclonal antibody, as inhibitor of 125I-IGF1 binding. IGF1 binding sites were detected in 18 human primary breast cancers, 12 benign breast tumours and two normal breast tissues. Using HAA we found that the human breast carcinomas studied exhibit a specific and high binding capacity for 125I-IGF1 exclusively localised on the proliferative epithelial component. The 125I-IGF1 binding activity of benign breast tumours or normal breast tissue was significantly lower than in cancerous tissues. There was a significant correlation between IGF1-R concentrations detected with HAA and those detected with a classical biochemical method. Moreover, HAA could be useful in further detailing whether a tumour is IGF1-R positive or negative HAA appears to be a useful method for the detection of growth factor receptors, specially in small biopsy specimens.

Abstract
Vinorelbine is a new 5' nor Vinca alkaloid, active by i.v. route, in various types of cancer disease such as non-small cell lung cancer and advanced breast cancer. In order to evaluate the possibility of using this drug for local treatment of cancer, Vinorelbine-loaded bioresorbable polymeric implants were prepared using a copolymer of D,L-lactic and glycolic acids (PLA 37.5 GA 25). According to the manufacturing process, the 1.2-mm-diameter cylindrical rods obtained had a drug content of 1, 5, or 20% (w/w) and released half of their content within about 6 days in vitro. In vivo release in rats was slower, half of the drug being released after about 14 days. A dose-dependent antitumoral effect was observed in mice (solid P388 leukemia model) when implants were administered into or in contact with the tumor. At highest drug loads and when administered soon after tumor implantation, Vinorelbine implants were more effective than i.v. administration (median survival time of treated animals related to untreated controls, greater than 360 versus 188). In dogs, results of toxicity experiments revealed that administration of implants in vital organs must be avoided. On the contrary, s.c. administration was well tolerated. A transient local necrosis was observed in the days following implantation, but normal skin was recovered after about 10 weeks. Thus, a clinical trial was conducted on patients with head and neck cancer; implantation of 20% loaded polymeric implants into the tumor sites succeeded in 8 of 9 patients. The sole failure was attributed to the unusual hardness of the tumor tissue. Except for a local transient inflammatory reaction (easily treated with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents), no other sign of toxicity was detected, and patients tolerated the device well. Fourteen days after implantation, patients underwent their planned surgery, and the implants were recovered. Residual drug content varied from 24 to 55%. In all cases, there was a clearly delimited necrotic area around the implant, ranging from 0.5 to 3.5 cm in diameter. In the smallest tumors, necrosis was also observed in the normal tissue inside this area. These results invite further studies to evaluate such drug-loaded polymeric implants.

Abstract
The diagnosis of the lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), whose frequency is estimated to range from 0.8 to 3.8 p. cent of breast cancers on the whole, is exclusively anatomopathological since it does not have any specific clinical and/or radiological characteristics. After describing the two main differential diagnoses, the various possible treatments are studied, bearing in mind that the therapeutic strategy must take into account the three characteristics which are typical of LCIS: multicentricity, bilaterality and the possible occurrence of an invasive cancer.

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factor 1 binding sites were characterized in human benign breast disease. We demonstrated the presence of one high affinity binding site. Chemical cross-linking of [125I]IGF1 to benign breast disease membranes in reducing condition and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) revealed one band with an apparent Mr of 130,000. The specificity of the binding was studied: IGF 2 was a good competitor whereas insulin competed for binding with a potency lower than 1/100 that of IGF1. This IGF1 binding corresponded to the previously described type I IGF receptor (IGF1-R). IGF1-R was assayed in 35 cases of benign breast disease and two samples of normal breast tissue. Forty-three per cent of the lesions were IGF1-R positive. The mean geometric level of specific binding was 1.98% in the whole population, it was significantly lower in adenofibromas (1.55%) than in epithelial hyperplasia (2.5%); it was 2% in dystrophic disease. IGF1-R was undetectable in normal tissue. Considering our previous results showing that almost all the breast cancers contained IGF1-R, these data suggest that the increase in IGF1-R could be a marker of malignant tumor development.

Abstract
A continuous line of human breast carcinoma cells, VHB-1, was established in culture following collagenase treatment of an infiltrating duct cell carcinoma. The cells displayed an epithelial pattern and multiplied rapidly. Maintained in monolayer culture, the VHB-1 cells exhibited a 30-h doubling time and a plating efficiency of 20%. The cells possessed an abnormal karyotype with a mode of 70-74 chromosomes per cell. The karyotype was heavily rearranged and numerous marker chromosomes were found. Transplantation of the cells into nude mice produced tumors bearing histological resemblance to the original material. The VHB-1 cells contained significant levels of prolactin receptors, were steroid hormone (estrogen, progesterone, androgen, glucocorticoid) receptor positive, and were capable of functional differentiation in vitro. These characteristics make the VHB-1 cell line a suitable model for studying the biological properties of human breast tumors.

Abstract
Among 189 patients treated for massive or repeated hemoptysis by transcatheter techniques between 1973 and 1983, a prospective study was attempted between 1979 and 1983 (72 patients) to search for bleeding of pulmonary arterial origin. Among these 72 patients, six were treated by surgical (one) or angiographic (five) occlusion of segmental pulmonary arteries. Pulmonary erosive pseudoaneurysms were seen in five cases (one with intracavitary aspergilloma, two with cavitary tuberculosis, and two with pyogenic abscesses). Among these six cases, one patient died from massive hemoptysis, one from unknown causes, and four are still alive. They are compared with five other patients who died from massive hemoptysis among 117 patients treated only by embolization of their systemic arteries between 1973 and 1979 (one with cavitary tuberculosis, two with intracavitary aspergillomas, one with an abscess of the lung, and one with a necrotic hilar cancer). A pulmonary arterial source of bleeding should be considered in addition to systemic arterial sources in the setting of destructive lung disease.
