Abstract
The principal inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) exerts its effects through two ligand-gated channels, GABA(A) and GABA(C) receptors, and a third receptor, GABA(B) , which acts through G proteins to regulate potassium and calcium channels. Cells heterologously expressing the cloned DNA encoding the GABA(B)R1 protein exhibit high-affinity antagonist-binding sites, but they produce little of the functional activity expected from studies of endogenous GABA(B) receptors in the brain. Here we describe a new member of the GABA(B) polypeptide family, GABA(B)R2, that shows sequence homology to GABA(B)R1. Neither GABA(B)R1 nor GABA(B)R2, when expressed individually, activates GIRK-type potassium channels; however, the combination of GABA(B)R1 and GABA(B)R2 confers robust stimulation of channel activity. Both genes are co-expressed in individual neurons, and both proteins co-localize in transfected cells. Moreover, immunoprecipitation experiments indicate that the two polypeptides associate with each other, probably as heterodimers. Several G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) exist as high-molecular-weight species, consistent with the formation of dimers by these receptors, but the relevance of these species for the functioning of GPCRs has not been established. We have now shown that co-expression of two GPCR structures, GABA(B)R1 and GABA(B)R2, belonging to the same subfamily is essential for signal transduction by GABA(B) receptors.

Abstract
Two structurally related, G-protein-coupled receptors were identified as receptors for the neuropeptide, neuromedin U. This peptide is found in highest levels in the gut and genitourinary system where it potently contracts smooth muscle but is also expressed in the spinal cord and discrete regions of the brain. Binding sites for neuromedin U have been characterized in rat uterus, however, little is known about the activity of this peptide in the regions of the central nervous system where it is expressed. The receptors characterized in this report are activated by neuromedin U at nanomolar potency in heterologous expression systems and bind radiolabeled neuromedin U with high affinity. Localization of the receptor RNA by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in a variety of human tissues shows distinct expression patterns for the two receptors. NMU1 is expressed predominantly in peripheral tissues, whereas NMU2 is more highly expressed in the central nervous system. Identification of neuromedin U receptor subtypes will greatly aid in the determination of the physiological roles of this peptide.

Abstract
Lymphocyte development and differentiation are regulated by the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors encoded by the E2A and HEB genes. These bHLH proteins bind to E-box enhancers in the form of homodimers or heterodimers and, consequently, activate transcription of the target genes. E2A homodimers are the predominant bHLH proteins present in B-lineage cells and are shown genetically to play critical roles in B-cell development. E2A-HEB heterodimers, the major bHLH dimers found in thymocyte extracts, are thought to play a similar role in T-cell development. However, disruption of either the E2A or HEB gene led to only partial blocks in T-cell development. The exact role of E2A-HEB heterodimers and possibly the E2A and HEB homodimers in T-cell development cannot be distinguished in simple disruption analysis due to a functional compensation from the residual bHLH homodimers. To further define the function of E2A-HEB heterodimers, we generated and analyzed a dominant negative allele of HEB, which produces a physiological amount of HEB proteins capable of forming nonfunctional heterodimers with E2A proteins. Mice carrying this mutation show a stronger and earlier block in T-cell development than HEB complete knockout mice. The developmental block is specific to the alpha/beta T-cell lineage at a stage before the completion of V(D)J recombination at the TCRbeta gene locus. This defect is intrinsic to the T-cell lineage and cannot be rescued by expression of a functional T-cell receptor transgene. These results indicate that E2A-HEB heterodimers play obligatory roles both before and after TCRbeta gene rearrangement during the alpha/beta lineage T-cell development.

Abstract
A precision measurement by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station of the positron fraction in primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 0.5 to 350 GeV based on 6.8 × 10(6) positron and electron events is presented. The very accurate data show that the positron fraction is steadily increasing from 10 to ∼ 250 GeV, but, from 20 to 250 GeV, the slope decreases by an order of magnitude. The positron fraction spectrum shows no fine structure, and the positron to electron ratio shows no observable anisotropy. Together, these features show the existence of new physical phenomena.

Abstract
To investigate the prevalence of, and risk factors for, cervical infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) in the rural province of Shanxi, People's Republic of China, which has relatively high cervical cancer mortality rates, we interviewed and obtained cervical cell samples from 662 women aged 15–59 years. A total of 24 different HPV types were identified using a GP5+/6+-based PCR assay able to detect 44 different HPV types. Human papillomavirus prevalence was 14.8% overall and 9.6% among women without cervical abnormalities (14.2 and 8.9%, respectively, age standardised to the world standard population). Multiple-type infections accounted for 30.6% of all infections. By far the most commonly found type was HPV16 (5.7% of all women and 38.8% of HPV-positive women), followed by HPV 58, 52, 33 and 18. Unlike most previous studies published, HPV prevalence was lower among women younger than 35 years (8.7%) than those older than 35 years (17.8%). High-risk HPV types predominated in all age groups. Although low-risk HPV types were rare in young women, they became more common with increasing age. 92.3% of women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 were infected with high-risk HPV types, but none with low-risk types only. No significant difference in HPV positivity was observed by educational level, sexual habits, reproductive history or use of contraceptive methods in this rural low-income Chinese population.

Abstract
The genetic analysis of hypertension has revealed complex and inconsistent results, making it difficult to draw clear conclusions regarding the impact of specific genes on blood pressure regulation in diverse human populations. Some of the confusion from previous studies is probably due to undetected gene-gene interactions. Instead of focusing on the effects of single genes on hypertension, we examined the effects of interactions of alleles at 4 candidate loci. Three of the loci are in the renin-angiotensin-system, angiotensinogen, ACE, and angiotensin II type 1 receptor, and they have been associated with hypertension in at least 1 previous study. The fourth locus studied is a previously undescribed locus, named FJ. In total, 7 polymorphic sites at these loci were analyzed for their association with hypertension in 51 normotensive and 126 hypertensive age-matched individuals. There were no significant differences between the 2 phenotypic classes with respect to either allele or genotype frequencies. However, when we tested for nonallelic associations (linkage disequilibrium), we found that of the 120 multilocus comparisons, 16 deviated significantly from random in the hypertensive class, but there were no significant deviations in the normotensive group. These findings suggest that genetic interactions between multiple loci rather than variants of a single gene underlie the genetic basis of hypertension in our study subjects. We hypothesize that such interactions may account for the inconsistent findings in previous studies because, unlike our study, prior studies almost always examined single-locus effects and did not consider the effects of variation at other potentially interacting loci.

Abstract
The nutritional and endocrine factors affecting protein translation in the bovine mammary gland, and the molecular mechanisms mediating their effects, are not well understood. The objective of this study was to assess the role of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway in the regulation of mammary protein synthesis by nutrients and hormones. Mammary epithelial acini isolated from lactating dairy cows were treated in medium containing, alone or in combination, a mixture of AA or glucose and acetate (GA) as energy substrates, or a combination of the lactogenic hormones hydrocortisone, insulin, and prolactin (HIP). Changes in the rate of mammary protein synthesis and the phosphorylation state of components of the mTOR signaling pathway were measured. Mammary protein synthesis was 50% higher with increased availability of AA in medium. The presence of GA or treatment of mammary acini with HIP alone did not affect mammary protein synthesis. The stimulation of mammary protein synthesis by AA was enhanced by HIP treatment, but not by the presence of GA in medium. Treatment of mammary acini with HIP induced the phosphorylation of protein kinase B. This effect was augmented in the presence of either AA or GA in medium. The stimulation of mammary protein synthesis by AA and its enhancement by HIP were associated with increased phosphorylation of the mTOR substrates, p70 ribosomal protein S6 kinase-1, and eukaryotic initiation factor 4E (eIF4E)-binding protein-1 (4E-BP1), and dissociation of 4E-BP1 from eIF4E. The results suggest that nutrients and hormones may modulate mammary protein synthesis through the mTOR signaling pathway.

Abstract
To investigate the prevalence of, and risk factors for, cervical infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) in Shenyang City, People's Republic of China, we interviewed and obtained cervical cell samples from 685 women aged 15-59 years enumerated from local population lists. Human papillomavirus DNA was detected in cervical cell samples using a GP5+/6+-based PCR assay for 44 HPV types. Human papillomavirus prevalence was 16.8% overall and 13.6% among women without cervical abnormalities (16.6% and 12.4%, respectively, age-standardised to the world standard population), with no significant trends in HPV prevalence by age group. Of the 32 types identified, high-risk HPV types predominated in all age groups, HPV16 being the most common (3.4% of all women), followed by HPV52 (2.5%) and 58 (1.9%). Multiple-type infections accounted for 31.3% of all infected women. Not being married, reporting multiple sexual partners and husband's extramarital sexual relationships were all significantly associated with being HPV-positive. The disclosure of a relatively high HPV prevalence in Shenyang, in comparison with other worldwide populations, raises important questions concerning the prevention of cervical cancer in China, especially given the promising efficacy of prophylactic HPV vaccines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periostin protein shares structural and sequence homology with fasciclin I, which is an insect adhesion molecule. Periostin has a typical signal peptide at the N-terminal end, which suggests that it is a secreted protein. Recently, the authors developed a novel sandwich chemiluminescence assay to determine serum concentrations of periostin. METHODS The authors investigated the serum periostin level in lung carcinoma patients and attempted to determine the influence of serum periostin level on clinical outcome for patients with nonsmall cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) who had undergone surgery between January 1994 and July 1996. Expression of periostin messenger RNA was also examined by in situ RNA hybridization for lung carcinomas. RESULTS The periostin gene was shown to be highly expressed at the tumor periphery of lung carcinoma tissue but not within the tumor by in situ RNA hybridization. Serum periostin levels were not significantly different between the NSCLC patients (1142.1 +/- 89.2 ng/mL) and the normal control (962.0 +/- 118.6 ng/mL) (P = 0.2985). There was no relation between serum periostin level and gender, stage, bone metastasis, N status, or T status. However, the serum periostin levels of NSCLC patients had decreased significantly by 4 weeks after the resection of the tumor. The NSCLC patients with high periostin level (> 962 ng/mL) had significantly poorer survival than the patients with normal periostin level (P = 0.0406). Using the Cox proportional hazards regression model, the authors found that stage (P < 0.0001) and serum periostin level (P = 0.0226) were independent prognostic factors. CONCLUSIONS The in situ RNA hybridization data from the current study suggested that expression of periostin may be involved in tumor invasionand that the serum periostin level may serve as a prognostic marker for NSCLC.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that accounts for the most cases of dementia, which is characterized by the deposition of dense plaques of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles consisting of hyperphosphorylated tau. The two main types of AD can be classified as early-onset AD (EOAD, onset < 65 years) and late-onset AD (LOAD, onset ≥ 65 years). Evidence from family and twin studies indicate that genetic factors are estimated to play a role in at least 80% of AD cases. The first milestone with linkage analysis revealed the mutations in APP, PSEN1, and PSEN2 genes that cause EOAD. But pathogenic mutations in these three genes can only explain a small fraction of EOAD families. The additional disease-causing genes have not yet been identified. This review provides an overview of the genetic basis of EOAD and the relationship between the functions of these risk genes and the neuropathologic features of AD. A better understanding of genetic mechanisms underlying EOAD pathogenesis and the potentially molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration will lead to the development of effective diagnosis and treatment strategies for this devastating disease.

Abstract
The mammalian E2A, HEB, and E2-2 genes encode a unique class of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors that are evolutionarily conserved and essential for embryonic and postnatal development. While the structural and functional similarities among the gene products are well demonstrated, it is not clear why deletion of E2A, but not HEB or E2-2, leads to a complete arrest in B-lymphocyte development. To understand the molecular basis of the functional specificity between E2A and HEB/E2-2 in mammalian development, we generated and tested a panel of E2A knockin mutations including subtle mutations in the E12 and E47 exons and substitution of both E12 and E47 exons with a human HEB cDNA. We find that the alternatively spliced E12 and E47 bHLH proteins of the E2A gene play similar and additive roles in supporting B lymphopoiesis. Further, we find that HEB driven by the endogenous E2A promoter can functionally replace E2A in supporting B-cell commitment and differentiation toward completion. Finally, the postnatal lethality associated with E2A disruption is fully rescued by the addition of HEB. This study suggests that the functional divergence among E12, E47, and HEB in different cell types is partially defined by the context of gene expression.

Abstract
Precision measurements by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station of the primary cosmic-ray electron flux in the range 0.5 to 700 GeV and the positron flux in the range 0.5 to 500 GeV are presented. The electron flux and the positron flux each require a description beyond a single power-law spectrum. Both the electron flux and the positron flux change their behavior at ∼30 GeV but the fluxes are significantly different in their magnitude and energy dependence. Between 20 and 200 GeV the positron spectral index is significantly harder than the electron spectral index. The determination of the differing behavior of the spectral indices versus energy is a new observation and provides important information on the origins of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons.

Abstract
The primary neuroendocrine interface, hypothalamus and pituitary, together with adrenals, constitute the major axis responsible for the maintenance of homeostasis and the response to the perturbations in the environment. The gene expression profiling in the human hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis was catalogued by generating a large amount of expressed sequence tags (ESTs), followed by bioinformatics analysis (http://www.chgc.sh.cn/ database). Totally, 25,973 sequences of good quality were obtained from 31,130 clones (83.4%) from cDNA libraries of the hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands. After eliminating 5,347 sequences corresponding to repetitive elements and mtDNA, 20,626 ESTs could be assembled into 9, 175 clusters (3,979, 3,074, and 4,116 clusters in hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands, respectively) when overlapping ESTs were integrated. Of these clusters, 2,777 (30.3%) corresponded to known genes, 4,165 (44.8%) to dbESTs, and 2,233 (24.3%) to novel ESTs. The gene expression profiles reflected well the functional characteristics of the three levels in the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis, because most of the 20 genes with highest expression showed statistical difference in terms of tissue distribution, including a group of tissue-specific functional markers. Meanwhile, some findings were made with regard to the physiology of the axis, and 200 full-length cDNAs of novel genes were cloned and sequenced. All of these data may contribute to the understanding of the neuroendocrine regulation of human life.

Abstract
A precision measurement by AMS of the positron fraction in primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 0.5 to 500 GeV based on 10.9 million positron and electron events is presented. This measurement extends the energy range of our previous observation and increases its precision. The new results show, for the first time, that above ∼200 GeV the positron fraction no longer exhibits an increase with energy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common cancers in the world and is particularly prevalent in China. China is also a hyperendemic area for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Although a strong association between HBV infection and HCC has been established previously, the role of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and the interaction between HBV and HCV in the development of HCC has not been adequately explored. The major objective of this study is to determine the relationship between HBV or HCV infection and HCC by use of case-control study in Henan, China. METHOD In all, 152 HCC patients and 115 control patients were collected from four hospitals in Henan, China between January 1994 and October 1995. The demographic characteristics of the two groups were comparable. In further analysis, a 1:1 pair-matched case-control study was performed. Of 152 HCC patients, 113 were randomly selected to be pair-matched by sex and age (+/-5 years) to controls with non-hepatic disease. All the cases and controls were interviewed during hospitalization by two specially trained interviewers using a standard questionnaire. All sera were tested for HBV and HCV markers. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% CI for HCC risk factors were calculated by logistic regression model controlling for possible confounding factors such as sex and age. The multivariate analysis was done on the basis of the univariate analysis. RESULTS The results of this study indicated that the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and antibody to HCV (anti-HCV) were much higher in HCC patients (63.2% and 11.2% respectively) than in the control patients (5.2%, 3.5%). The difference between two groups was significant (P < 0.05). Risk factor analysis revealed that both HBV and HCV infection were important factors for HCC in Henan, China and HBV appeared to have a key role in the development of HCC. Odds ratios of HBsAg and HBV infection were 28.82 (95% CI: 11.18-78.78) and 31.22 (95% CI: 13.86-72.15), respectively. Moreover, the risk of developing HCC increased significantly and showed an additive effect when both viral markers of HBV and HCV infection were considered (OR = 42.85). Results from the 1:1 pair-matched case-control study also showed that HBV infection was an important risk factor for HCC, which was consistent with the results from the group-matched case-control study. CONCLUSION This is the first reported case-control study of HCC in Henan, China. This study provides further evidence that chronic HBV infection is strongly associated with the development of HCC among this population. Our results have demonstrated that HCV and HBV infection are independent and probably additive risk factors for HCC.

Abstract
We recorded the horizontal (yaw), vertical (pitch), and torsional (roll) eye movements of two rhesus monkeys with scleral search coils before and after the COSMOS Biosatellite 2229 Flight. The aim was to determine effects of adaptation to microgravity on the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). The animals flew for 11 days. The first postflight tests were 22 h and 55 h after landing, and testing extended for 11 days after reentry. There were four significant effects of spaceflight on functions related to spatial orientation: (1) Compensatory ocular counterrolling (OCR) was reduced by about 70% for static and dynamic head tilts with regard to gravity. The reduction in OCR persisted in the two animals throughout postflight testing. (2) The gain of the torsional component of the angular VOR (roll VOR) was decreased by 15% and 50% in the two animals over the same period. (3) An up-down asymmetry of nystagmus, present in the two monkeys before flight was reduced after exposure to microgravity. (4) The spatial orientation of velocity storage was shifted in the one monkey that could be tested soon after flight. Before flight, the yaw axis eigenvector of optokinetic afternystagmus was close to gravity when the animal was upright or tilted. After flight, the yaw orientation vector was shifted toward the body yaw axis. By 7 days after recovery, it had reverted to a gravitational orientation. We postulate that spaceflight causes changes in the vestibular system which reflect adaptation of spatial orientation from a gravitational to a body frame of reference. These changes are likely to play a role in the postural, locomotor, and gaze instability demonstrated on reentry after spaceflight.

Abstract
AIMS Visfatin is a newly discovered adipokine found in abundance in visceral fat. It lowers plasma glucose in humans and mice. In this study, we explored the relationships between the plasma level of visfatin and genetic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and anthropometric and metabolic parameters in Chinese subjects. METHODS Oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) and biochemical assays for plasma insulin, lipid profiles and serum visfatin were performed in 241 newly diagnosed T2DM patients, subjects with impaired glucose regulation (IGR), and normal glucose tolerant subjects more than 40 years of age. Genotyping for three SNP loci: -1535C/T, rs2058539 and rs10953502 were performed using the allele-specific real-time PCR method. RESULTS Visfatin levels were similar in T2DM patients, IGR and normal glucose tolerant subjects. However, visfatin levels were significantly lower in obese than normal-weight subjects (13.66 +/- 0.87 vs. 15.46 +/- 0.47 ng/ml, P = 0.03). There was suggestively significant correlation between visfatin level and body mass index (r = -0.17 P = 0.07) and waist-hip ratio (r = 0.16 P = 0.08) in male subjects, but not in female subjects. Allele and common haplotype frequencies of the three SNP loci were similar in T2DM patients, IGR and normal glucose tolerant subjects. However, significant associations were found between these three SNP loci and plasma glucose concentration at 0 and 120 min during OGTT, the area under the response curve for plasma glucose, and triglyceride and total cholesterol levels. CONCLUSIONS Serum visfatin levels may be related to visceral obesity in men, and the visfatin gene may account for variation of glucose and lipid parameters in Chinese subjects.

Abstract
The adsorption of a series of alkylammonium bromides (RR1N(CH3)2Br) with different chain lengths R and R1 on a nonswelling clay surface (sodium kaolinite) has been studied by microelectrophoresis and adsorption isotherms. An increase in the number of CH2 groups in the shorter alkyl chain of the double-chain surfactant, or the introduction of another kind of alkyl group (phenyl group), was found to have much less effect on the adsorption behavior than changing the length of the alkyl chain in the single-chain surfactants. It is inferred that the effective hydrophobicity of the shorter chains in these double-chain surfactants is reduced by their intramolecular association with the longer chain. Comparison of adsorption and micellization leads to an empirical quantitative description of the effects of alkyl chain length and structure on adsorption. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

Abstract
1. We studied the contribution of the individual semicircular canals to the generation of horizontal and torsional eye movements in cynomolgus monkeys. Eye movements were elicited by sinusoidal rotation about a vertical (gravitational) axis at 0.2 Hz with the animals tilted in various attitudes of static forward or backward pitch. The gains of the horizontal and torsional components of the vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) were measured for each tilt position. The gains as a function of tilt position were fit with sinusoidal functions, and spatial gains and phases were determined. After control responses were recorded, the semicircular canals were plugged, animals were allowed to adapt, and the test procedure was repeated. Animals were prepared with only the anterior and posterior canals intact [vertical canal (VC) animals], with only the lateral canals intact [lateral canal (LC) animal], and with only one anterior and the contralateral posterior canals intact [right anterior and left posterior canal (RALP) animals; left anterior and right posterior canal (LARP) animals]. 2. In normal animals, the gain of the horizontal (yaw axis) velocity of the compensatory eye movements decreased as they were pitched forward or backward, and a torsional velocity appeared, reversing phase at the peak of the horizontal gain. After the anterior and posterior canals were plugged (LC animal), the horizontal component was reduced when the animal was tilted backward; the gain was zero with about -60 degrees of backward tilt. The spatial phase of the torsional component had the same characteristics. This is consistent with the fact that both responses were produced by the lateral canals, which from our results are tilted between 28 and 39 degrees above the horizontal stereotaxic plane. 3. After both lateral canals were plugged (VC animals), horizontal velocity was reduced in the upright position but increased as the animals were pitched backward relative to the axis of rotation. Torsional velocities, which were zero in the upright position in the normal animal, were now 180 degrees out of phase with the horizontal velocity. The peak values of the horizontal and torsional components were significantly shifted from the normal data and were closely aligned with each other, reaching peak values at approximately -56 degrees pitched back (-53 degrees horizontal, -58 degrees torsional). The same was true for the LARP and RALP animals; the peak values were at -59 degrees pitched back (-55 degrees horizontal, -62 degrees torsional). Likewise, in the LC animal the peak yaw and roll gains occurred at about the same angle of forward tilt, 35 degrees (30 degrees horizontal, 39 degrees torsional). Thus, in each case, the canal plugging had transformed the VOR from a compensatory to a direction-fixed response with regard to the head. Therefore there was no adaptation of the response planes of the individual canals after plugging. 4. The data were compared with eye velocity predictions of a model based on the geometric organization of the canals and their relation to a head coordinate frame. The model used the normal to the canal planes to form a nonorthogonal coordinate basis for representing eye velocity. An analysis of variance was used to define the goodness of fit of model predictions to the data. Model predictions and experimental data agreed closely for both normal animals and for the animals with canal lesions. Moreover, if horizontal and roll components from the LC and VC animals were combined, the summation overlay the response of the normal monkeys and the predictions of the model. In addition, a combination of the RALP and LARP animals predicted the response of the lateral-canal-plugged (VC) animals. 5. When operated animals were tested in light, the gains, peak values, and spatial phases of horizontal and roll eye velocity returned to the preoperative values, regardless of the type of surgery performed. Abstract
Corneal endothelial wound healing in living rabbit eyes after mechanical scrape (MS) and transcorneal freeze (TCF) injury was studied using tandem scanning confocal microscopy (TSCM). MS injury was created on the central corneal endothelium with an olive tip cannula; TCF injury was created using a 3-mm-diameter stainless steel probe cooled with liquid nitrogen. In vivo observation of wound healing using TSCM was correlated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for fixed tissues. At 6 h after MS, migrating endothelial cells at the leading edge showed lamellipodial processes on in vivo TSCM and SEM. After 24 h, the denuded area was almost fully resurfaced by migrating endothelial cells showing wide spaces between nuclei by TSCM. After 28 days, resurfaced endothelial cells showed normal hexagonal mosaic appearance with enlarged cells by TSCM and SEM. TCF injury produced fibroblastic changes in the endothelial cells with elongation and spreading by 24 h after injury. After 3 days, the wounded area was resurfaced with two cell types: (a) migrating endothelial cells at the peripheral area, which appeared polygonal in shape with wide intracellular spaces and (b) fibroblast-like cells at the center of the wound, which formed a retrocorneal fibrous membrane (RCFM). The RCFM was posteriorly covered with normal endothelium after 28-60 days. TSCM of the stroma demonstrated spindle-shaped, activated keratocytes migrating into the wounded stroma at 3-14 days. In conclusion, TSCM allows viewing of dynamic four-dimensional morphologic changes (x, y, z, and time) during in vivo cellular repair of corneal wound healing after either MS or TCF injury.

Abstract
A total of 21 squamous-cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva (SCC) and 22 control subjects had conjunctival samples tested for human papillomavirus (HPV) types using PCR-based assays. Epidermodysplasia verruciformis HPV types were found in 86% of SCC cases and 36% of control subjects (Odds ratio=12.0), suggesting a role of HPVs in the aetiology of SCC.

Abstract
Paeonol (2'-hydroxy-4'-methoxyacetophenone), the main active compound of the radix of Paeonia suffruticosa, has been reported to have a beneficial effect in prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), plays a crucial role in case of early inflammatory responses, including atherosclerosis. In this study, we investigated the effect of paeonol on TNF-alpha-induced VCAM-1 expression in rat aortic endothelial cells (RAECs). The VCAM-1 expression in paeonol treated RAECs was measured. Paeonol inhibited TNF-alpha-induced VCAM-1 expression in a concentration-dependent manner. TNF-alpha induced p38 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) activities that contributed to VCAM-1expression was obviously attenuated after pre-treating RAECs with paeonol. The decrease of VCAM-1 expression by paeonol pretreatment led to a reduction of monocytes adhesion to RAECs. Taken together, our results demonstrated that paeonol inhibited VCAM-1 expression by the attenuation of p38 and ERK1/2 signal transduction pathways. We concluded that paeonol had the potential therapeutic development for use in anti-inflammatory and vascular disorders.

Abstract
1. A simplified three-dimensional state space model of visual vestibular interaction was formulated. Matrix and dynamical system operators representing coupling from the semicircular canals and the visual system to the velocity storage integrator were incorporated into the model. 2. It was postulated that the system matrix for a tilted position was a composition of two linear transformations of the system matrix for the upright position. One transformation modifies the eigenvalues of the system matrix while another rotates the pitch and roll eigenvectors with the head, while maintaining the yaw axis eigenvector approximately spatially invariant. Using this representation, the response characteristics of the pitch, roll, and yaw eye velocity were obtained in terms of the eigenvalues and associated eigenvectors. 3. Using OKAN data obtained from monkeys and comparing to the model predictions, the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the system matrix were identified as a function of tilt to the side or of tilt to the prone positions, using a modification of the Marquardt algorithm. The yaw eigenvector for right-side-down tilt and for downward pitch cross-coupling was approximately 30 degrees from the spatial vertical. For the prone position, the eigenvector was computed to be approximately 20 degrees relative to the spatial vertical. For both side-down and prone positions, oblique OKN induced along eigenvector directions generated OKAN which decayed to zero along a straight line with approximately a single time constant. This was verified by a spectral analysis of the residual sequence about the straight line fit to the decaying data. The residual sequence was associated with a narrow autocorrelation function and a wide power spectrum. 4. Parameters found using the Marquardt algorithm were incorporated into the model. Diagonal matrices in a head coordinate frame were introduced to represent the direct pathway and the coupling of the visual system to the integrator. Model simulations predicted the behavior of yaw and pitch OKN and OKAN when the animal was upright, as well as the cross-coupling in the tilted position. The trajectories in velocity space were also accurately simulated. 5. There were similarities between the monkey eigenvectors and human perception of the spatial vertical. For side-down tilts and downward eye velocity cross-coupling, there was only an Aubert (A) effect. For upward eye velocity cross-coupling there were both Müller (E) and Aubert (A) effects. Abstract
The aim of this study was to use electrical impedance tomography (EIT) to detect and image acute intracranial haemorrhage (ICH) in an animal model. Blood was infused into the frontal lobe of the brains of anaesthetized piglets and impedance was measured using 16 electrodes placed in a circle on the scalp. The EIT images were constructed using a filtered back-projection algorithm. The mean of all the pixel intensities within a region of interest--the mean resistivity value (MRV)--was used to evaluate the relative impedance changes in the target region. A symmetrical index (SI), reflecting the relative impedance on both sides of the brain, was also calculated. Changes in MRV and SI were associated with the injection of blood, demonstrating that EIT can successfully detect ICH in this animal model. The unique features of EIT may be beneficial for diagnosing ICH early in patients after cranial surgery, thereby reducing the risk of complications and mortality.

Abstract
Periostin protein shares structural and sequence homology with fasciclin I, which is an insect adhesion molecule. Periostin has a typical signal peptide at the N-terminal end suggesting it is a secreted protein. Recently, we developed a novel sandwich chemiluminescence assay to determine serum concentrations of periostin. We investigated the serum periostin level in thymoma patients, and attempted to determine the correlation between serum periostin level and clinicopathological factors of thymoma patients who had undergone surgery between January 1994 and July 1996. Serum periostin levels were not significantly different between the thymoma patients (1264.4+/-122.9 ng/ml) and the normal control (962.0+/-118.6 ng/ml) (P=0.0877). There was no relationship between serum periostin level and age, gender or pathological subtype. However the serum periostin level of stage IV patients (1497.0+/-285.8 ng/ml) was significantly higher than normal control (P=0.0460). These data suggest that serum periostin level may indicate tumor invasion and progression of thymoma.
