Abstract
PURPOSE 5-Aza-2'-deoxycytidine (decitabine; DAC) is a DNA hypomethylating agent that has shown a 50% response rate in a small phase II study in elderly patients with high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome. We performed a second, multicenter phase II study in a larger group of patients to confirm our findings and to study the toxicity of DAC. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between June 1996 and September 1997, 66 patients (median age, 68 years) from seven centers received DAC 45 mg/m(2)/d for 3 days every 6 weeks. For patients in whom a complete response (CR) was reached after two courses, two further cycles were administered as consolidation therapy. In case of a stable disease situation, improvement, or a partial response (PR), a maximum of six cycles was administered. The primary end points were response rate and toxicity. The secondary end points were response duration, survival from the start of therapy, and overall survival. RESULTS The observed overall response rate was 49%, with a 64% response rate in the patients with an International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) high-risk score. The actuarial median response duration was 31 weeks, with a response duration of 39 weeks and 36 weeks for patients who reached a PR or CR, respectively. The actuarial median survival time from the time of diagnosis was 22 months and from the start of therapy was 15 months. For the IPSS high-risk group, the median survival time was 14 months. The median progression-free survival time was 25 weeks. Myelosuppression was rather common, and the treatment-related mortality rate was 7% and was primarily associated with pancytopenia and infection. Significant responses were observed with regard to megakaryopoiesis, with increases in platelet counts having already occurred after one cycle of DAC therapy in the majority of the responding patients. CONCLUSION We were able to confirm our previous observation that DAC therapy was effective in half of the studied patients with high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome and is especially active in the patients with the worst prognoses. Myelosuppression was the only major adverse effect observed.

Abstract
Several lines of evidence have supported a link betweeen adipose tissue and immunocompetent cells. This link is illustrated in obesity, where excess adiposity and impaired immune function have been described in both humans and genetically obese rodents. In addition, numerous factors involved in inflammatory response are secreted by both preadipocytes and macrophages. Here we show that proliferating preadipocytes in cell lines and primary cultures, develop phagocytic activity toward microorganisms. This is demonstrated by phagocytosis assays and confocal microscopy. This function disappears when preadipocytes stop proliferating and differentiate into adipocytes. After phagocytosis, preadipocytes show microbicide activity via an oxygen-dependent mechanism. In addition, preadipocytes as well as adipocytes are stained with MOMA-2, a marker of monocyte-macrophage lineage, but are negative for specific mature macrophage markers (F4/80 and Mac-1). These results suggest that preadipocytes could function as macrophage-like cells and raise the possibility of a potential direct involvement of adipose tissue in inflammatory processes.

Abstract
Decitabine (5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine) acts as a powerful demethylating agent in vitro. Clinically, low-dose decitabine ameliorates cytopenias including induction of trilineage responses in approximately 50% of patients with high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). We examined the incidence and kinetics of cytogenetic responses to decitabine in these patients. Of 115 successfully karyotyped patients, 61 (53%) had clonal chromosomal abnormalities prior to treatment. Major cytogenetic responses were observed in 19 patients (31% of those with abnormal cytogenetics, 17% of all patients by intention-to-treat) after a median of three courses (range, 2-6) until best cytogenetic response. Progressive decrease of the abnormal clone over time was also determined using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis in two patients. Median duration of cytogenetic responses was 7.5 months (range, 3-15). Analysis of response by the International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) cytogenetic risk groups revealed three out of five cytogenetic responses (60%) in the IPSS 'low-risk' group, 6 out of 30 with 'intermediate risk' (20%) and 10 out of 26 in the 'high-risk' group (38%). Median survival in these cytogenetic subgroups was 30, 8 and 13 months respectively. The relative risk of death in patients achieving a major cytogenetic response was 0.38 (95% confidence interval 0.17-0.88) compared with patients in whom the cytogenetically abnormal clone persisted (P = 0.0213). In conclusion, repeated courses of low-dose decitabine induce cytogenetic remissions in a substantial number of elderly MDS patients with pre-existing chromosomal abnormalties; these are associated with improved survival compared with patients in whom the cytogenetically abnormal clone persists. Patients with 'high-risk' chromosomal abnormalities may particularly benefit from this treatment.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), an advanced magnetic resonance-based imaging technique, and acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI), an ultrasound-based imaging technique, are accurate for diagnosing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) fibrosis. However, no head-to-head comparisons between MRE and ARFI for diagnosing NAFLD fibrosis have been performed. We compared MRE versus ARFI head-to-head for diagnosing fibrosis in well-characterized patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD. This cross-sectional analysis of a prospective cohort involved 125 patients (54.4% female) who underwent MRE, ARFI, and contemporaneous liver biopsies scored using the Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network histological scoring system. The performances of MRE versus ARFI for diagnosing fibrosis were evaluated using area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs). The mean (± standard deviation) age and body mass index were 48.9 (±15.4) years and 31.8 (±7.0) kg/m(2) , respectively. For diagnosing any fibrosis (≥ stage 1), the MRE AUROC was 0.799 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.723-0.875), significantly (P = 0.012) higher than the ARFI AUROC of 0.664 (95% CI 0.568-0.760). In stratified analysis by presence or absence of obesity, MRE was superior to ARFI for diagnosing any fibrosis in obese patients (P < 0.001) but not in nonobese patients (P = 0.722). The MRE AUROCs for diagnosing ≥stages 2, 3, and 4 fibrosis were 0.885 (95% CI 0.816-0.953), 0.934 (95% CI 0.863-1.000), and 0.882 (95% CI 0.729-1.000); and the ARFI AUROCs were 0.848 (95% CI 0.776-0.921), 0.896 (95% CI 0.824-0.968), and 0.862 (95% CI 0.721-1.000). MRE had higher AUROCs than ARFI for discriminating dichotomized fibrosis stages at all dichotomization cutoff points, but the AUROC differences decreased as the cutoff points (fibrosis stages) increased. CONCLUSION MRE is more accurate than ARFI for diagnosing any fibrosis in NAFLD patients, especially those who are obese.

Abstract
Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is associated with several classes of plasma lipoproteins and mediates uptake of lipoproteins through its ability to interact with specific cell surface receptors. Besides its role in cardiovascular diseases, accumulating evidence has suggested that apoE could play a role in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer disease. In vertebrates, apoA-I is the major protein of high-density lipoprotein. ApoA-I may play an important role in regulating the cholesterol content of peripheral tissues through the reverse cholesterol transport pathway. We have isolated cDNA clones that code for apoE and apoA-I from a zebrafish embryo library. Analysis of the deduced amino acid sequences showed the presence of a region enriched in basic amino acids in zebrafish apoE similar to the lipoprotein receptor-binding region of human apoE. We demonstrated by whole-mount in situ hybridization that apoE and apoA-I genes are highly expressed in the yolk syncytial layer, an extraembryonic structure implicated in embryonic and larval nutrition. ApoE transcripts were also observed in the deep cell layer during blastula stage, in numerous ectodermal derivatives after gastrulation, and after 3 days of development in a limited number of cells both in brain and in the eyes. Our data indicate that apoE can be found in a nonmammalian vertebrate and that the duplication events, from which apoE and apoA-I genes arose, occurred before the divergence of the tetrapod and teleost ancestors. Zebrafish can be used as a simple and useful model for studying the role of apolipoproteins in embryonic and larval nutrition and of apoE in brain morphogenesis and regeneration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Objectives were to precise EEG criteria of normality in very premature infants. METHODS The neonatal electroencephalograms (EEGs) of 17 neurologically normal very premature infants recorded at a conceptional age (CA) of 26-28 weeks have been analyzed. The normality of the infants was defined as normal neonatal cranial ultrasound scans and normal neurological outcome at a minimum postnatal age of 2 years. RESULTS All tracings were discontinuous. The bursts (amplitude >/=30 microV) were interhemispherically synchronous and lasted up to 3 min. The interburst intervals lasted up to 46 s. EEG patterns consisted mainly of slow waves (</=3 Hz), with high amplitude (up to 300 microV), occipital predominance and superimposed alpha, beta and theta rhythms. High amplitude theta rhythms predominated on temporal areas, beta rhythms were mainly central, whereas alpha rhythms were central and occipital. Sleep state differentiation began as early as 26 weeks CA. On a given trace, the existence of more mature graphoelements than expected for the CA reflected a normal increasing maturation. CONCLUSIONS EEG has constant and reproductible patterns in normal very premature infants. This can constitute a basis for the determination of EEG criteria for neurological prognosis in infants of 26-28 weeks CA.

Abstract
Background Radiofrequency ultrasound data from the liver contain rich information about liver microstructure and composition. Deep learning might exploit such information to assess nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Purpose To develop and evaluate deep learning algorithms that use radiofrequency data for NAFLD assessment, with MRI-derived proton density fat fraction (PDFF) as the reference. Materials and Methods A HIPAA-compliant secondary analysis of a single-center prospective study was performed for adult participants with NAFLD and control participants without liver disease. Participants in the parent study were recruited between February 2012 and March 2014 and underwent same-day US and MRI of the liver. Participants were randomly divided into an equal number of training and test groups. The training group was used to develop two algorithms via cross-validation: a classifier to diagnose NAFLD (MRI PDFF ≥ 5%) and a fat fraction estimator to predict MRI PDFF. Both algorithms used one-dimensional convolutional neural networks. The test group was used to evaluate the classifier for sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy and to evaluate the estimator for correlation, bias, limits of agreements, and linearity between predicted fat fraction and MRI PDFF. Results A total of 204 participants were analyzed, 140 had NAFLD (mean age, 52 years ± 14 [standard deviation]; 82 women) and 64 were control participants (mean age, 46 years ± 21; 42 women). In the test group, the classifier provided 96% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 90%, 99%) (98 of 102) accuracy for NAFLD diagnosis (sensitivity, 97% [95% CI: 90%, 100%], 68 of 70; specificity, 94% [95% CI: 79%, 99%], 30 of 32; positive predictive value, 97% [95% CI: 90%, 99%], 68 of 70; negative predictive value, 94% [95% CI: 79%, 98%], 30 of 32). The estimator-predicted fat fraction correlated with MRI PDFF (Pearson r = 0.85). The mean bias was 0.8% (P = .08), and 95% limits of agreement were -7.6% to 9.1%. The predicted fat fraction was linear with an MRI PDFF of 18% or less (r = 0.89, slope = 1.1, intercept = 1.3) and nonlinear with an MRI PDFF greater than 18%. Conclusion Deep learning algorithms using radiofrequency ultrasound data are accurate for diagnosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and hepatic fat fraction quantification when other causes of steatosis are excluded. © RSNA, 2020 Online supplemental material is available for this article. Abstract
In this work, we propose a deep learning method for breast mass segmentation in ultrasound (US). Variations in breast mass size and image characteristics make the automatic segmentation difficult. To address this issue, we developed a selective kernel (SK) U-Net convolutional neural network. The aim of the SKs was to adjust network's receptive fields via an attention mechanism, and fuse feature maps extracted with dilated and conventional convolutions. The proposed method was developed and evaluated using US images collected from 882 breast masses. Moreover, we used three datasets of US images collected at different medical centers for testing (893 US images). On our test set of 150 US images, the SK-U-Net achieved mean Dice score of 0.826, and outperformed regular U-Net, Dice score of 0.778. When evaluated on three separate datasets, the proposed method yielded mean Dice scores ranging from 0.646 to 0.780. Additional fine-tuning of our better-performing model with data collected at different centers improved mean Dice scores by ~6%. SK-U-Net utilized both dilated and regular convolutions to process US images. We found strong correlation, Spearman's rank coefficient of 0.7, between the utilization of dilated convolutions and breast mass size in the case of network's expansion path. Abstract
Seven fasting subjects were fitted with nasogastric and nasoduodenal tubes and received intragastrically a coarsely emulsified test meal. Gastric and duodenal aspirates were collected after 1, 2, 3, and 4 h. In the duodenum, most lipids (> 90%) were present as emulsified droplets 1-100 microns in size. Large droplets and unemulsified material present in the test meal (> 100 micron) disappeared, whereas smaller droplets (1-50 microns) were generated after 1 h of digestion. Thus the median lipid droplet diameter significantly decreased (19.6 vs. 56.5 microns in the test meal) and the droplet surface area significantly increased (1.58 vs. 0.70 micron2/g fat). Intermediate droplet diameters were 34.3, 46.3, and 27.6 microns after 2, 3, and 4 h, respectively. In the stomach, a comparable emulsion particle size pattern was observed, with median droplet diameters of 17.2, 37.9, 52.4, and 41.6 microns after 1, 2, 3, and 4 h, respectively. However, the extent of triglyceride hydrolysis was much lower in the stomach (6-16%) than in the duodenum (42-45%), where small droplets were enriched in lipolytic products, cholesterol, and phospholipids. The present findings show for the first time that most dietary lipids are present in the human duodenum as emulsified droplets 1-50 microns in size and that no further marked emulsification of dietary fat occurs in the duodenum compared with the stomach.

Abstract
Apolipoprotein E (apoE) plays an important role in systemic and local lipid homeostasis. We have examined the expression of apoE during morphogenesis and regeneration of paired and unpaired fins and during scale development in zebrafish (Danio rerio). In situ hybridization analysis revealed that, during embryogenesis, apoE is expressed in the epithelial cells of the median fin fold and of the pectoral fin buds. ApoE remains expressed in the elongating fin folds throughout development of the fins. During the larval to juvenile transition, apoE transcripts were present in the distal, interray and lateral epidermis of developing fins. Furthermore, as scale buds started to form, apoE was expressed in large scale domains which later, became restricted to the external posterior epidermal part of scales. A low level of transcripts could be observed at later developmental stages at these locations probably because fins and scales continue to grow throughout the animal's life. During regeneration of both pectoral and caudal fins, a marked increase in apoE expression is observed as early as 12 hours after amputation in the wound epidermis. High levels of apoE transcripts are then localized primarily in the basal cell layer of the apical epidermis. The levels of apoE expression were maximum between the second to fourth days and then progressively declined to basal level by day 14. ApoE transcripts were also observed in putative macrophages infiltrated in the mesenchymal compartment of regenerating fins a few hours after amputation. In conclusion, apoE is highly expressed in the epidermis of developing fins and scales and during fin regeneration while no expression can be detected in the skin of the trunk. ApoE may play a specific role in fin and scale differentiation at sites where important epidermo-dermal interactions occur for the elaboration of the dermal skeleton and/or for lipid uptake and redistribution within these rapidly growing structures.

Abstract
We aimed to provide basic data on the processing of vitamin A and E in the human gastrointestinal tract and to assess whether the size of emulsion fat globules affects the bioavailability of these vitamins. Eight healthy men received intragastrically two lipid formulas differing in their fat-globule median diameter (0.7 vs. 10. 1 microm. Formulas provided 28 mg vitamin A as retinyl palmitate and 440 mg vitamin E as all-rac alpha-tocopherol. Vitamins were measured in gastric and duodenal aspirates, as well as in chylomicrons, during the postprandial period. The gastric emptying rate of lipids and vitamin A and E was similar. The free retinol/total vitamin A ratio was not significantly modified in the stomach, whereas it was dramatically increased in the duodenum. The proportion of ingested lipid and vitamins was very similar in the duodenal content. The chylomicron response of lipids and vitamins was not significantly different between the two emulsions. Our main conclusions are as follows: 1) there is no significant metabolism of vitamin A and E in the human stomach, 2) the enzyme(s) present in the duodenal lumen is significantly involved in the hydrolysis of retinyl esters, and 3) the size of emulsion fat globules has no major effect on the overall absorption of vitamin A and E.

Abstract
Background Advanced confounder-corrected chemical shift-encoded MRI-derived proton density fat fraction (PDFF) is a leading parameter for fat fraction quantification in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Because of the limited availability of this MRI technique, there is a need to develop and validate alternative parameters to assess liver fat. Purpose To assess relationship of quantitative US parameters to MRI PDFF and to develop multivariable quantitative US models to detect hepatic steatosis and quantify hepatic fat. Materials and Methods Adults with known NAFLD or who were suspected of having NAFLD were prospectively recruited between August 2015 and February 2019. Participants underwent quantitative US and chemical shift-encoded MRI liver examinations. Liver biopsies were performed if clinically indicated. The correlation between seven quantitative US parameters and MRI PDFF was evaluated. By using leave-one-out cross validation, two quantitative US multivariable models were evaluated: a classifier to differentiate participants with NAFLD versus participants without NAFLD and a fat fraction estimator. Classifier performance was summarized by area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and area under the precision-recall curve. Fat fraction estimator performance was evaluated by correlation, linearity, and bias. Results Included were 102 participants (mean age, 52 years ± 13 [standard deviation]; 53 women), 78 with NAFLD (MRI PDFF ≥ 5%). A two-variable classifier yielded a cross-validated area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.89 (95% confidence interval: 0.82, 0.96) and an area under the precision-recall curve of 0.96 (95% confidence interval: 0.93, 0.99). The cross-validated fat fraction predicted by a two-variable fat fraction estimator was correlated with MRI PDFF (Spearman ρ = 0.82 [P < .001]; Pearson r = 0.76 [P < .001]). The mean bias was 0.02% (P = .97), and 95% limits of agreement were ±12.0%. The predicted fat fraction was linear with MRI PDFF (R 2 = 0.63; slope, 0.69; intercept, 4.3%) for MRI PDFF of 34% or less. Conclusion A multivariable quantitative US approach yielded excellent correlation with MRI proton density fat fraction for hepatic steatosis assessment in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. © RSNA, 2020 Online supplemental material is available for this article.

Abstract
A proportion of patients with drug-resistant and drug-susceptible tuberculosis (TB) have sputum that is smear and culture positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis for a prolonged period of time, despite conventional therapy. Among such patients with refractory TB, an unblinded, observational study was undertaken that used conventional TB therapy and adjunctive aerosol aminoglycosides. Patients with persistent smear- and culture-positive sputum for M. tuberculosis (despite > or =2 months of optimal systemic therapy) were selected for adjunctive treatment via inhalation with aminoglycosides, and microbiological responses were monitored. Thirteen of 19 patients converted to smear negativity during the study: 6 of 7 with drug-susceptible TB and 7 of 12 with drug-resistant TB. Among patients with drug-susceptible TB, the median time to sputum conversion was 23 days, a shorter time than for a population of historical control patients. Recurrent infection was not observed. Adjunctive aerosol aminoglycosides may expedite sterilization of sputum among certain patients with refractory TB and diminish the risk of transmission.

Abstract
The potential of ionic liquids as solvents for headspace gas chromatography was investigated. Three compounds with boiling points above 200 degrees C were selected to demonstrate the feasibility of the concept described. 2-Ethylhexanoic acid, formamide, and tri-n-butylamine as examples of acidic, neutral, and basic analytes were dissolved in acidic 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate (1), neutral 1-n-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium dicyanamide (2), and 2 containing 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene to adjust basic conditions. All analytes could be determined with limits of detection and limits of quantification in the low-ppm concentration range.

Abstract
Liver fibrosis is a histological hallmark of most chronic liver diseases, which can progress to cirrhosis and liver failure, and predisposes to hepatocellular carcinoma. Accurate diagnosis of liver fibrosis is necessary for prognosis, risk stratification, and treatment decision-making. Liver biopsy, the reference standard for assessing liver fibrosis, is invasive, costly, and impractical for surveillance and treatment response monitoring. Elastography offers a noninvasive, objective, and quantitative alternative to liver biopsy. This article discusses the need for noninvasive assessment of liver fibrosis and reviews the comparative advantages and limitations of ultrasound and magnetic resonance elastography techniques with respect to their basic concepts, acquisition, processing, and diagnostic performance. Variations in clinical contexts of use and common pitfalls associated with each technique are considered. In addition, current challenges and future directions to improve the diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility of elastography techniques are discussed. Abstract
AIM To evaluate the effects of intensive insulin therapy alone and with added pioglitazone on body weight, fat distribution, lean body mass (LBM) and liver fat in type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS Twenty-five insulin-treated, obese patients with type 2 diabetes were randomized to addition of pioglitazone 45 mg (n = 12) or placebo (n = 13) and treated intensively for 12-16 weeks. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry/abdominal computed tomography scans were performed before/after treatment. LBM, visceral/subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT/SAT) and liver/spleen (L/S) attenuation ratios were measured pre-/posttreatment (a ratio <1 represents fatty liver). RESULTS Intensive insulin alone and insulin + pioglitazone significantly improved glycaemic control (7.8 ± 0.3 to 7.2 ± 0.3% and 7.6 ± 0.3 to 7.1 ± 0.4%, respectively). Body weight gain was greater with insulin + pioglitazone (4.9 ± 4.5 kg) versus insulin therapy alone (1.7 ± 0.7 kg). SAT increased significantly with pioglitazone + insulin therapy (393.9 ± 48.5 to 443.2 ± 56.7 cm(2) , p < 0.01) compared to a non-significant increase with insulin therapy alone (412.9 ± 42.5 to 420.8 ± 43.8 cm(2) ). VAT decreased non-significantly in both groups (240.3 ± 41.7 to 223.8 ± 38.1 cm(2) with insulin + pioglitazone and 266.6 ± 27.4 to 250.5 ± 22.2 cm(2) with insulin therapy). LBM increased significantly by 1.92 ± 0.74 kg with insulin + pioglitazone treatment. The L/S attenuation ratio in the placebo + insulin group decreased from 1.08 ± 0.1 to 1.04 ± 0.1 (p = ns) and increased from 1.00 ± 0.1 to 1.08 ± 0.05 (p = 0.06) in the pioglitazone + insulin group. CONCLUSIONS Intensification of insulin therapy in type 2 diabetic patients causes modest weight gain and no change in body fat distribution, LBM or liver fat. In contrast, the addition of pioglitazone, at equivalent glycaemia, increases weight gain, fat mass and SAT; increases LBM and tends to decrease liver fat. These changes in fat distribution may contribute to the beneficial effects of pioglitazone, despite greater weight gain.

Abstract
An evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders in 202 patients using three-dimensional CT displays has revealed the usefulness of the technique, especially in patients with fractures of skeletal areas with complex anatomy, articular disorders of the hip, and spinal stenosis. In some cases, plastic models of diseased areas have been created from the CT data and are reasonably accurate, providing a graphic representation of the disease and the ability to perform rehearsal surgery. A preliminary investigation of three-dimensional displays of MR images indicates that the technique is feasible, although its clinical practicality requires further analysis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the repeatability and reproducibility of the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient (AC) and backscatter coefficient (BSC) measured in the livers of adults with known or suspected nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS The Institutional Review Board approved this Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-compliant prospective study; informed consent was obtained. Forty-one research participants with known or suspected NAFLD were recruited and underwent same-day ultrasound examinations of the right liver lobe with a clinical scanner by a clinical sonographer. Each participant underwent 2 scanning trials, with participant repositioning between trials. Two transducers were used in each trial. For each transducer, machine settings were optimized by the sonographer but then kept constant while 3 data acquisitions were obtained from the liver without participant repositioning and then from an external calibrated phantom. Raw RF echo data were recorded. The AC and BSC were measured within 2.6 to 3.0 MHz from a user-defined hepatic field of interest from each acquisition. The repeatability and reproducibility were analyzed by random-effects models. RESULTS The mean AC and log-transformed BSC (logBSC) were 0.94 dB/cm-MHz and -27.0 dB, respectively. Intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.88 to 0.94 for the AC and 0.87 to 0.95 for the logBSC acquired without participant repositioning. For between-trial repeated scans with participant repositioning, the intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.80 to 0.84 for the AC and 0.69 to 0.82 for the logBSC after averaging results from 3 within-trial images. The variability introduced by the transducer was less than the repeatability error. CONCLUSIONS Hepatic AC and BSC measures using a reference phantom technique on a clinical scanner are repeatable and reproducible between transducers in adults with known or suspected NAFLD.

Abstract
Disuse osteoporosis occurs in the lower extremities of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, spinal osteoporosis is not usually observed in these patients. We investigated lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) in SCI patients using single energy quantitative computed tomography (QCT) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Our study population consisted of 64 patients with long-standing SCI. Spine BMD (g/cm3) was assessed by QCT at four vertebrae ranging from T11 to L4 with single mid-vertebral CT slices 1 cm thick parallel to the vertebral end-plates. Confounding variables affecting normal trabecular bone pattern, such as compression fractures, surgical hardware or fat replacement, were excluded. For a subset of 29 patients, DXA values of the spine and femoral neck were also measured, and QCT and DXA Z-scores were compared On the average, the 64 SCI patients had Z-scores 2.0 +/- 1.2 below those of age-matched controls. In the subset of 29 patients with both QCT and DXA measurements, the QCT and DXA Z-scores were 2.4 +/- 1.1 below and 1.3 +/- 2.3 above the mean, respectively (p < 0.0001). Our results indicate that QCT reveals osteoporosis of the spine after SCI, in contrast to DXA. We postulate that QCT is more valuable for evaluating spinal osteoporosis following SCI than DXA and thus recommend QCT for spinal BMD studies in SCI.

Abstract
All measurements of photorespiration and gross photosynthesis in leaves, whether using isotopes or not, are underestimated because of the recycling of O(2) or CO(2). On the basis of a simple diffusion model, we propose a method for the calculation of the recycling and the corresponding underestimation of the measurements. This procedure can be applied when the stomatal resistance is known, and allows for a correction of certain results in the literature. It is found that measurements of the photorespiratory CO(2) release are usually underestimated by 20 to 100%, which sets the estimated rate of CO(2) photorespired at 30 to 50% of the net photosynthesis in C3 plants under normal conditions. In water stress studies, the correction of the photorespiration is still more important (1.5-3.3) because the stomata are closed more. Analysis of the diffusion of O(2) shows that its recycling is low and that the underestimation of photorespiration with (18)O(2) is negligible.

Abstract
Three members of the viatica group of morabine grasshoppers occur on Kangaroo
Island: the 19- and 17-chromosome races of "viatica" and the XY race of "P24".
Their distributions are parapatric and fit in well with the respective mainland distributions,
assuming a former land connection. Confrontations of these taxa in all three
possible combinations occur; two of them have been located, each at one point, and
the reproductive situations studied.
The zone of overlap, or "tension zone", between P24(XY) and viatica17 was
found to be 200-300 m wide and to contain representatives of both forms (as diagnosed
by the karyotype), as well as a substantial proportion of cytologically hybrid individuals.
Good evidence was secured for a much more extended reciprocal introgression of genes
controlling the form of the male cercus and certain anatomical dimensions. The tension
zone between P24(XY) and viatica19 seems to be even narrower, but, in spite of close
contact between the two forms, no cytologically hybrid individuals were found and no
evidence of intergradation in anatomical features; it is concluded that they mate freely
with each other, but that the product of these unions is inviable.
The apparent reproductive isolation of P24(XY) and viatica19 in their zone of
overlap on Kangaroo Island gives support to the view that the accretion of genetic
differences along tension zones may lead ultimately to full speciation. However, it is
questionable whether P24(XY) and viatica19 themselves should be regarded as distinct
species, since on the mainland they form the terminal members of a geographical series
of forms, all adjacent members of which almost certainly interbreed.
