Abstract
Paired helical filaments isolated from the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease are composed of a major protein component, the microtubule-associated protein termed tau, together with other nonprotein components, including heparan, a glycosaminoglycan, the more extensively sulfated form of which is heparin. As some of these nonprotein components may modulate the assembly of tau into filamentous structures, we have analyzed the ability of the whole tau protein or some of its fragments to self-assemble in the presence of heparin. Different tau fragments, all of them containing some sequences of the tubulin-binding motif, can assemble in vitro into filaments. We have also found formation of polymers with the 18-residue-long peptide corresponding to the third tubulin-binding motif of tau. This suggests that the ability of tau for self-assembly could be localized in a short sequence of amino acids present in the tubulin-binding repeats of the tau molecule.

Abstract
Delayed neurologic deterioration from vasospasm remains the greatest cause of morbidity and mortality following subarachnoid hemorrhage. The authors assess the incidence and clinical course of symptomatic vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage using a uniform management protocol over a 24-month period. One hundred eighteen consecutive patients were admitted to the neurovascular surgery service within 2 weeks of subarachnoid hemorrhage not attributed to trauma, tumor, or vascular malformation (113 patients had aneurysms). Early surgery was performed whenever possible, and hypertensive hypervolemic hemodilution therapy was instituted at the first sign of clinical vasospasm. Forty-two patients (35.6%) developed characteristic signs and symptoms of clinical vasospasm with angiographic verification of spasm in 39 cases. All patients with clinical vasospasm received hypervolemic hemodilution therapy aiming for a hematocrit of 33-38%, a central venous pressure of 10-12 mm Hg (or a pulmonary wedge pressure of 15-18 mm Hg), and a systolic arterial pressure of 160-200 mm Hg (120-150 mm Hg for unclipped aneurysms) for the duration of clinical vasospasm. Over the course of treatment, 60% of patients with clinical vasospasm had sustained improvement by at least 1 neurologic grade, 24% maintained a stable neurologic status, and 16% continued to worsen. At the end of hypervolemic hemodilution therapy, 47.6% had become neurologically normal, 33.3% had a minor neurologic deficit, and 19% had a major neurologic deficit or were dead. There were 3 instances of cardiopulmonary deterioration (7%), all of which were in patients without Swan-Ganz catheters, and all resolved with appropriate diuresis. Abstract
Induction of filopodia is dependent on activation of the small GTPase Cdc42 and on neural Wiskott-Aldrich-syndrome protein (N-WASP). Here we show that WASP-interacting protein (WIP) interacts directly with N-WASP and actin. WIP retards N-WASP/Cdc42-activated actin polymerization mediated by the Arp2/3 complex, and stabilizes actin filaments. Microinjection of WIP into NIH 3T3 fibroblasts induces filopodia; this is inhibited by microinjection of anti-N-WASP antibody. Microinjection of anti-WIP antibody inhibits induction of filopodia by bradykinin, by an active Cdc42 mutant (Cdc42(V12)) and by N-WASP. Our results indicate that WIP and N-WASP may act as a functional unit in filopodium formation, which is consistent with their role in actin-tail formation in cells infected with vaccinia virus or Shigella.

Abstract
We studied the evolutionary relationships among basal metazoan lineages by using complete large subunit (LSU) and small subunit (SSU) ribosomal RNA sequences for 23 taxa. After identifying competing hypotheses, we performed maximum likelihood searches for trees conforming to each hypothesis. Kishino-Hasegawa tests were used to determine whether the data (LSU, SSU, and combined) reject any of the competing hypotheses. We also conducted unconstrained tree searches, compared the resulting topologies, and calculated bootstrap indices. Shimodaira-Hasegawa tests were applied to determine whether the data reject any of the topologies resulting from the constrained and unconstrained tree searches. LSU, SSU, and the combined data strongly contradict two assertions pertaining to sponge phylogeny. Hexactinellid sponges are not likely to be the basal lineage of a monophyletic Porifera or the sister group to all other animals. Instead, Hexactinellida and Demospongia form a well-supported clade of siliceous sponges, Silicea. It remains unclear, on the basis of these data alone, whether the calcarean sponges are more closely related to Silicea or to nonsponge animals. The SSU and combined data reject the hypothesis that Bilateria is more closely related to Ctenophora than it is to Cnidaria, whereas LSU data alone do not refute either hypothesis. LSU and SSU data agree in supporting the monophyly of Bilateria, Cnidaria, Ctenophora, and Metazoa. LSU sequence data reveal phylogenetic structure in a data set with limited taxon sampling. Continued accumulation of LSU sequences should increase our understanding of animal phylogeny.

Abstract
One approach to understanding the function of presenilin 1 (PS1), is to discover those proteins with which it interacts. Evidence for a function in developmental patterning came from C. elegans, in which a PS homologue was identified by screening for suppressors of a mutation in Notch/lin-12, a gene which specifies cell fate. However, this genetic experiment cannot determine which proteins directly interact with PS1. Therefore, we utilized the two hybrid system and confirmatory co-immunoprecipitations to identify a novel catenin, termed delta-catenin, which interacts with PS1 and is principally expressed in brain. The catenins are a gene family related to the Armadillo gene in Drosophila, some of which appear to have dual roles-they are components of cell-cell adherens junctions, and may serve as intermediates in the Wingless (Wg) signaling pathway, which, like Notch/lin-12, is also responsible for a variety of inductive signaling events. In the non-neuronal 293 cell line, PS1 interacted with beta-catenin, the family member with the greatest homology to Armadillo. Wg and Notch interactions are mediated by the Dishevelled gene, which may form a signaling complex with PS1 and Wg pathway intermediates to regulate the function of the Notch/lin-12 gene.

Abstract
Modulation of host immunity is one of the proposed benefits of the consumption of probiotics. Nonetheless, comparative studies on the immunological properties that support the selection of strains of the same species for specific health benefits are limited. In this study, the ability of different strains of Bifidobacterium longum to induce cytokine production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) has been evaluated. Live cells of all B. longum strains greatly stimulated regulatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-10 and proinflammatory cytokine tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha production. Strains of the same species also induced specific cytokine patterns, suggesting that they could drive immune responses in different directions. The probiotic strain B. longum W11 stimulated strongly the production of T helper 1 (Th1) cytokines while B. longum NCIMB 8809 and BIF53 induced low levels of Th1 cytokines and high levels of IL-10. The effects of cell-surface components obtained by sonication of B. longum strains overall confirm the effects detected by stimulation of PBMCs with live cells, indicating that these components are important determinants of the immunomodulatory activity of B. longum. Genomic DNA of some strains stimulated the production of the Th1 and pro-inflammatory cytokines, interferon (IFN)-gamma and TNF-alpha, but not that of IL-10. None of the cell-free culture supernatants of the studied strains was able to induce TNF-alpha production, suggesting that the proinflammatory component of these strains is associated mainly with structural cell molecules. The results suggest that despite sharing certain features, some strains can perform a better functional role than others and their careful selection for therapeutic use is desirable.

Abstract
The classical adherens junction that holds epithelial cells together consists of a protein complex in which members of the cadherin family linked to various catenins are the principal components. delta-catenin is a mammalian brain protein in the Armadillo repeat superfamily with sequence similarity to the adherens junction protein p120(ctn). We found that delta-catenin can be immunoprecipitated as a complex with other components of the adherens junction, including cadherin and beta-catenin, from transfected cells and brain. The interaction with cadherin involves direct contact within the highly conserved juxtamembrane region of the COOH terminus, where p120(ctn) also binds. In developing mouse brain, staining with delta-catenin antibodies is prominent towards the apical boundary of the neuroepithelial cells in the ventricular zone. When transfected into Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) epithelial cells delta-catenin colocalized with cadherin, p120(ctn), and beta-catenin. The Arm domain alone was sufficient for achieving localization and coimmunoprecipitation with cadherin. The ectopic expression of delta-catenin in MDCK cells altered their morphology, induced the elaboration of lamellipodia, interfered with monolayer formation, and increased scattering in response to hepatocyte growth factor treatment. We propose that delta-catenin can regulate adhesion molecules to implement the organization of large cellular arrays necessary for tissue morphogenesis.

Mild hyperhomocysteinemia has been suggested as a new, independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This fact has produced a new, increased interest in the study of homocysteine metabolism and its relation to pathogenesis. This emergent area of biomedical research is reviewed here, stressing the biochemical and metabolic basis of the pathogenicity of increased levels of homocysteine.

Abstract
Phytoestrogens are polyphenols similar to human estrogens found in plants or derived from plant precursors. Phytoestrogens are found in high concentration in soya, flaxseed and other seeds, fruits, vegetables, cereals, tea, chocolate, etc. They comprise several classes of chemical compounds (stilbenes, coumestans, isoflavones, ellagitannins, and lignans) which are structurally similar to endogenous estrogens but which can have both estrogenic and antiestrogenic effects. Although epidemiological and experimental evidence indicates that intake of phytoestrogens in foods may be protective against certain chronic diseases, discrepancies have been observed between in vivo and in vitro experiments. The microbial transformations have not been reported so far in stilbenes and coumestans. However, isoflavones, ellagitanins, and lignans are metabolized by intestinal bacteria to produce equol, urolithins, and enterolignans, respectively. Equol, urolithin, and enterolignans are more bioavailable, and have more estrogenic/antiestrogenic and antioxidant activity than their precursors. Moreover, equol, urolithins and enterolignans have anti-inflammatory effects and induce antiproliferative and apoptosis-inducing activities. The transformation of isoflavones, ellagitanins, and lignans by intestinal microbiota is essential to be protective against certain chronic diseases, as cancer, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and menopausal symptoms. Bioavailability, bioactivity, and health effects of dietary phytoestrogens are strongly determined by the intestinal bacteria of each individual.

Abstract
The induction of a mucosal immune response is not easy due to the development of oral tolerance, but under some conditions, bacteria can activate this immune system. Antigens administered orally can interact with M cells of Peyer's patches or bind to the epithelial cells. We have demonstrated that certain lactic acid bacteria are able to induce specific secretory immunity, and others will enhance the gut inflammatory immune response. The aim of this work was to establish the reason for these different behaviors and to define possible mechanisms involved in the interaction of lactic acid bacteria at the intestinal level. We studied IgA+ and IgM+ B cells comparatively in bronchus and intestine and CD4+ T cells and IgA anti-lactic acid bacteria antibodies in the intestinal fluid, induced by oral administration of Lactobacillus casei, Lb. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus, Lb. acidophilus, Lb. plantarum, Lb. rhamnosus, Lactococcus lactis, and Streptococcus salivarius ssp. thermophilus. The increase in the IgA+ B cells in the bronchus means that these lactic acid bacteria were able to induce the IgA cycle by interaction with M cells from Peyer's patches or intestinal epithelial cells. The IgM+ cells increased when the stimulus did not induce the switch from IgM+ to IgA+. The increase in the CD4+ cells suggests interaction of Peyer's patches and enhancement of the B- and T-cell migration. The anti-lactic acid bacteria antibody is related to the processing and presentation of the microorganisms to the immune cells. We demonstrated that Lb. casei and Lb. plantarum were able to interact with Peyer's patch cells and showed an increase in IgA-, CD4+ cells, and antibodies specific for the stimulating strain. Lactobacillus acidophilus induced gut mucosal activation by interaction with the epithelial cells without increase in the immune cells associated with the bronchus. Although Lb. rhamnosus and Strep. salivarius ssp. thermophilus interact with epithelial cells, they also induced an immune response against their epitopes. Lactococcus lactis and Lb. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus induced an increase of IgA+ cells entering the IgA cycle but not CD4+ cells; thus, these bacteria would have been bound to epithelial cells that activated B lymphocytes without processing and presenting of their epitopes. We did not determine specific antibodies against Lc. lactis or Lb. bulgaricus.

Abstract
The crystal structure of the ferredoxin:NADP+ reductase (FNR) from the cyanobacterium Anabaena PCC 7119 has been determined at 2.6 A resolution by multiple isomorphous replacement and refined using 15.0 A to 1.8 A data, collected at 4 degrees C, to an R-factor of 0.172. The model includes 303 residues, the flavin adenine dinucleotide cofactor (FAD), one sulfate ion located at the putative NADP+ binding site and 328 water molecule sites. The structure of Anabaena FNR, including FAD, a network of intrinsic water molecules and a large hydrophobic cavity in the C-terminal domain, resembles that of the spinach enzyme. The major differences concern the additional short alpha-helix (residues 172 to 177 in Anabaena FNR) and residues Arg 100 and Arg 233 which binds NADP+ instead of Lys 116 and Lys 244 in the spinach enzyme. Crystals of a complex of Anabaena FNR with NADP+ were obtained. The model of the complex has been refined using 15 A to 2.25 A X-ray data, collected at -170 degrees C, to an R-factor of 0.186. This model includes 295 residues, FAD, the full NADP+ (with an occupancy of 0.8) and 444 water molecules. The 2'-5' adenine moiety of NADP+ binds to the protein as 2'-phospho-5'-AMP to the spinach FNR. The nicotinamide moiety is turned towards the surface of the protein instead of stacking onto the FAD isoalloxazine ring as would be required for hydride transfer. The model of the complex agrees with previous biochemical studies as residues Arg 100 and Arg 233 are involved in NADP+ binding and residues Arg77, Lys 53 and Lys 294, located on the FAD side of the enzyme, remain free to interact with ferredoxin and flavodoxin, the physiological partners of ferredoxin: NADP reductase.

Abstract
A new series of donepezil-tacrine hybrid related derivatives have been synthesised as dual acetylcholinesterase inhibitors that could bind simultaneously to the peripheral and catalytic sites of the enzyme. These new hybrids combined a tacrine, 6-chlorotacrine or acridine unit as catalytic binding site and indanone (the heterocycle present in donepezil) or phthalimide moiety as peripheral binding site of the enzyme, connected through a different linker tether length. One of the synthesised compounds emerged as a potent and selective AChE inhibitor, which is able to displace propidium in a competition assay. These results seem to confirm the ability of this inhibitor to bind simultaneously to both sites of the enzyme and make it a promising lead for developing disease-modifying drugs for the future treatment of Alzheimer's disease. To gain insight into the molecular determinants that modulate the inhibitory activity of these compounds, a molecular modelling study was performed to explore their binding to the enzyme.

Abstract
Delta-catenin is an adherens junction protein involved in cell motility and expressed early in neuronal development. It was discovered as an interactor with presenilin-1. The genomic structure of the human delta-catenin gene (Human Gene Nomenclature Committee-approved symbol CTNND2) was determined and mapped to 5p15.2. A deletion of this chromosomal region has been associated with the cri-du-chat syndrome (CDCS), a segmental aneusomy syndrome of 5p that is associated with an unusual high-pitched cry at birth, facial dysmorphology, poor growth, and severe mental retardation. delta-catenin maps to a specific region in 5p15.2 that has been implicated in the mental retardation phenotype. The breakpoints in patients with 5p terminal deletions were characterized with respect to the severity of mental retardation and the physical location of the delta-catenin gene. A strong correlation was found between the hemizygous loss of delta-catenin and severe mental retardation. These findings and the properties of delta-catenin as a neuronal-specific protein, expressed early in development and involved in cell motility, support its role in the mental retardation of CDCS when present in only one copy.

Abstract
Although cerebral venous malformations have been reported to cause epilepsy, progressive neurological deficits, and hemorrhage, their clinical significance remains controversial. In an attempt to clarify the natural history of the lesion and suggest an appropriate management strategy, the authors review their experience with 30 patients. In four patients with cerebellar venous angioma, an acute episode of ataxia was documented. The coexistence of a cavernous malformation was pathologically confirmed in the two patients who underwent surgery for bleeding presumed caused by the venous angioma. Infarction was shown in two patients and a tumor in two others. Follow-up periods ranged between 18 and 104 months, with only five patients symptomatic at the time of this report. Rebleeding had not occurred, nor had acute episodes of neurological dysfunction been documented. This clinical experience suggests that a venous malformation is frequently associated with other, more symptomatic conditions and is often erroneously identified as the source of the symptoms. Because the nature of the relationship between the venous malformation and the allied conditions remains ambiguous, it is recommended that patients harboring a "symptomatic" venous malformation undergo high-field magnetic resonance imaging to rule out underlying pathology, and that any such pathology be treated independently of the venous malformation.

Abstract
Initiation of protein synthesis on the foot-and-mouth disease virus RNA occurs at two sites, thus, two forms of the leader protein, termed Lab and Lb, are produced. Plasmids have been constructed which encode these proteins either together or individually. Plasmids encoding the Lab protein alone express a modified form of this protein in which the second methionine residue, which corresponds to the first amino acid of Lb, is changed to an alternative residue. Four different mutant forms of the Lab sequence were made. Each of the plasmids was introduced into a mammalian cell transient expression system which allowed the determination of the known activities of the L proteins. It was shown that the Lb protein and each of the modified Lab proteins were capable of cleaving the L/P1 junction in trans. Furthermore, each of these proteins induced the cleavage of the p220 component of the cap-binding complex (eIF-4F) producing inhibition of cap-dependent translation. These results indicate that the two species of L have the same functions.

Abstract
A mutualistic relationship between reef-building corals and endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium spp.) forms the basis for the existence of coral reefs. Genotyping tools for Symbiodinium spp. have added a new level of complexity to studies concerning cnidarian growth, nutrient acquisition, and stress. For example, the response of the coral holobiont to thermal stress is connected to the host-Symbiodinium genotypic combination, as different partnerships can have different bleaching susceptibilities. In this study, we monitored Symbiodinium physiological parameters and profiled the coral host transcriptional responses in acclimated, thermally stressed, and recovered fragments of the coral Montastraea faveolata using a custom cDNA gene expression microarray. Interestingly, gene expression was more similar among samples with the same Symbiodinium content rather than the same experimental condition. In order to discount for host-genotypic effects, we sampled fragments from a single colony of M. faveolata containing different symbiont types, and found that the host transcriptomic states grouped according to Symbiodinium genotype rather than thermal stress. As the first study that links coral host transcriptomic patterns to the clade content of their Symbiodinium community, our results provide a critical step to elucidating the molecular basis of the apparent variability seen among different coral-Symbiodinium partnerships.

Abstract
The chemical sequence of the [2Fe-2S] ferredoxin from the cyanobacterium AnabaenaPCC7119 (Fd7119) and its high-resolution X-ray structures in the oxidized and reduced states have been determined. The Fd7119 sequence is identical to that of the ferredoxin from the PCC7120 strain (Fd7120). X-ray diffraction data were collected at 100 K with an oxidized trigonal Fd7119 crystal, at 1.3 A resolution, and with an orthorhombic crystal, previously reduced with dithionite and flash frozen under anaerobic conditions, at 1.17 A resolution. The two molecular models were determined by molecular replacement with the [2Fe-2S] ferredoxin from the strain PCC7120 (Rypniewski, W. R., Breiter, D. R., Benning, M. M., Wesenberg, G., Oh, B.-H., Markley, J. L., Rayment, I., and Holden, H. M. (1991) Biochemistry 30, 4126-4131.) The final R-factors are 0. 140 (for the reduced crystal) and 0.138 (for the oxidized crystal). The [2Fe-2S] cluster appears as a significantly distorted lozenge in the reduced and oxidized redox states. The major conformational difference between the two redox forms concerns the peptide bond linking Cys46 and Ser47 which points its carbonyl oxygen away from the [2Fe-2S] cluster ("CO out") in the reduced molecule and toward it ("CO in") in the oxidized one. The "CO out" conformation could be the signature of the reduction of the iron atom Fe1, which is close to the molecular surface. Superposition of the three crystallographically independent molecules shows that the putative recognition site with the physiological partner (FNR) involves charged, hydrophobic residues and invariant water molecules.

Abstract
Four 46,XY siblings with congenital bilateral megalorchidia, marcogenitosomia, and severe mental deficiency were investigated. The testicular size was significantly larger than age-matched normal males. A normal hypothalamic-pituitary gonadotropin function was demonstrated by the finding of normal levels of luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormones in blood samples drawn at frequent intervals and by normal responses to gonadotropin-releasing hormone and testosterone administration. A normal testicular function was shown by the finding of normal (a) plasma testosterone and estradiol levels, (b) gonadal response to human chorionic gonadotropin, (c) sperm analysis, and (d) morphology and cell architecture of the testes. Adrenal function was found to be within normal limits. These results demonstrated the existence of normofunctional testicular hyperplasia. The family studies suggested that this distinct congenital disorders is inherited as an X-linked recessive trait.

Abstract
Ferredoxin:NADP+:reductase (FNR) catalyzes one terminal step of the conversion of light energy into chemical energy during photosynthesis. FNR uses two high energy electrons photoproduced by photosystem I (PSI) and conveyed, one by one, by a ferredoxin (Fd), to reduce NADP+ to NADPH. The reducing power of NADPH is finally involved in carbon assimilation. The interaction between oxidized FNR and Fd was studied by crystallography at 2.4 A resolution leading to a three-dimensional picture of an Fd-FNR biologically relevant complex. This complex suggests that FNR and Fd specifically interact prior to each electron transfer and disassemble upon a redox-linked conformational change of the Fd.

Abstract
There is considerable concern regarding the health of cloned cattle and their safety as a source of food. The objective was to summarize 5 years of commercial experience with cloning in three countries (United States, Argentina and Brazil). Overall, only 9% of transferred embryos resulted in calves; efficiency ranged from 0 to 45% (most were from 1 to 10%, but 24% of cell lines never produced live calves). There was no significant difference in pregnancy rate following transfer of one versus two embryos. Before 90 days of gestation, two ultrasound markers for embryo death were found, either crown rump length (CRL) or heart beat less than 7.5mm and 150bpm, respectively, were observed alone or together in 27% of clones that died. In addition, after 100 days of pregnancy, placental edema, hydrops fetalis and increased abdominal circumference size were used as ultrasound findings of a fetus at risk of loss. At 114 days of gestation, abdominal circumference in clones that died was statistically larger than in clones that survived alive to term and from MOET- and IVF-derived pregnancies (P<0.05). Since elective cesarean section (C-section) was partially replaced by natural or assisted parturition, C-section rates decreased from 100% in 2000 to 54% in 2005. On average, 42% of cloned calves died between delivery and 150 days of life; the most common abnormalities were: enlarged umbilical cord (37%), respiratory problems (19%), calves depressed/prolonged recumbency (20%) and contracted flexor tendons (21%). From 11 blood parameters evaluated during the first week of life, lactate decreased twice and glucose doubled its original value from 24h to 7 days. Adult cloned females had normal breeding and calving rates and cloned bulls produced good quality semen and had normal fertility when used for AI or natural mating. In conclusion, cloning had no risks qualitatively different from those encountered in animals involved in modern agricultural practices, although the frequency of the risks appeared to be increased in cattle during the early portions of the life cycle of cattle clones.

Abstract
Ferredoxin (Fd) functions in photosynthesis to transfer electrons from photosystem I to ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase (FNR). We have made several site-directed mutants of Anabaena 7120 Fd and have used laser flash photolysis to investigate the effects of these mutations on the kinetics of reduction of oxidized Fd by deazariboflavin semiquinone (dRfH.) and the reduction of oxidized Anabaena FNR by reduced Fd. None of the mutations influenced the second-order rate constant for dRfH. reduction by more than a factor of 2, suggesting that the ability of the [2Fe-2S] cluster to participate in electron transfer was not seriously affected. In contrast, a surface charge reversal mutation, E94K, resulted in a 20,000-fold decrease in the second-order rate constant for electron transfer from Fd to FNR, whereas a similar mutation at an adjacent site, E95K, produced little or no change in reaction rate constant compared to wild-type Fd. Such a dramatic difference between contiguous surface mutations suggests a very precise surface complementarity at the protein-protein interface. Mutations introduced at F65 (F65I and F65A) also decreased the rate constant for the Fd/FNR electron transfer reaction by more than 3 orders of magnitude. Spectroscopic and thermodynamic measurements with both the E94 and F65 mutants indicated that the kinetic differences cannot be ascribed to changes in gross conformation, redox potential, or FNR binding constant but rather reflect the protein-protein interactions that control electron transfer. Several mutations at other sites in the vicinity of E94 and F65 (R42, T48, D68, and D69) resulted in little or no perturbation of the Fd/FNR interaction.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
The effect of milks fermented by Lactobacillus helveticus and its non-proteolytic variant on mucosal and tumoral immunity was studied. Milks fermented by Lb. helveticus wild type or its non-proteolytic variant were administered orally to mice for different periods (3, 5 and 7 d). The immune response was assessed by analysing the activity of the peritoneal macrophages, the number of cells secreting IgA associated with the gut-associated lymphoid tissue and with the bronchial-associated lymphoid tissue. The number of cells was determined by direct immunofluorescence. The antitumour activity was monitored by studying the regression of the subcutaneously implanted fibrosarcomas. After 3 d feeding of milk fermented by Lb. helveticus wild type, the number of sIgA increased significantly at both the intestinal and bronchial levels, indicating that a cellular migration had occurred. This effect was not noticeable when milk fermented by Lb. helveticus Protease (-) was orally administered. Both fermented milks (wild type or its variant) exhibited an effect on the activity of the peritoneal macrophages, which might be indirectly correlated to the regression of the fibrosarcoma. Although the mechanism by which the lactic acid bacteria enhance the immune system is not clear, this study clearly suggests that the bioactive compounds released during milk fermentation might contribute to the immunoenhancing properties of these products. By releasing biopeptide, lactic acid bacteria have important implications in modulation of the host's immune response, more specifically its cellular immune response.

Abstract
Of 124 staphylococcal strains isolated from sheep milk, 78 produced enterotoxin A, B, C, or D when evaluated by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Enterotoxins A and D, elaborated by 44 and 43 strains, respectively, showed the highest incidence. Enterotoxin production by coagulase-negative strains (one Staphylococcus cohnii, three S. epidermidis, five S. haemolyticus, and four S. xylosus) was detected. Linear and logarithmic-logarithmic regressions of optical density on enterotoxin concentration yielded the best-fitting equations for enterotoxin quantitation. A significantly higher incidence of enterotoxin producers and significantly higher levels of enterotoxins produced were recorded for coagulase-positive, thermostable nuclease-positive, hemolysis-positive, or mannitol-positive strains. Mannitol utilization was the best test for discriminating between enterotoxigenic and nonenterotoxigenic staphylococci.
