Abstract
Objective: To summarize the clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of patients with pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) in order to improve clinicians' understanding of this disease. Methods: The clinical data of patients diagnosed with PSC in our hospital from January 1, 2015 to November 30, 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. According to whether radical resection was performed, the patients were divided into resectable group and unresectable group. The characteristics and treatments of PSC in different groups were compared. The survival curves were drawn by Kaplan-Meier method to compare the prognosis of different groups of patients. Results: A total of 43 PSC patients were included, including 32 males, with an average age of (62.79±9.59) years, and 31 smokers. Peripheral-type tumors were more common, with imaging showing predominantly solid soft tissue masses, and the maximum diameter of the tumor was more than 5 cm in 14 patients. Among the 23 patients who underwent NGS gene testing, the KRAS mutation rate was 43.5%, the TP53 mutation rate was 30.4%, and the MET mutation rate was 8.7%, all of which were MET-14 exon skipping mutations. PD-L1 expression was detected in 13 patients, 10 of whom showed high expression. The median overall survival (mOS) of the 43 patients with PSC was 24.6 months (13.0-52.7 months). Among them, 22 patients underwent radical lobectomy plus mediastinal lymph node dissection, 13 patients had postoperative recurrence, and 7 patients died during follow-up. The median disease-free survival (mDFS) was 12.3 months, the mOS was not achieved and the 1-year OS rate was 77.3 %. Twenty-one patients had unresectable locally advanced or advanced stage, and 15 patients died. The mDFS was 2.5 months, the mOS was 6.2 months, and the 1-year OS rate was 42.9 %. Seventeen patients received immunotherapy, and 1 patient received targeted therapy with the MET inhibitor glumetinib. Conclusions: PSC has a higher incidence in the elderly, smokers, and males, is highly malignant and has a poor prognosis. Based on its molecular biological characteristics, PD-L1 expression and tumor molecular detection can be performed to guide treatment options.

Measurements of All-Particle Energy Spectrum and Mean Logarithmic Mass of Cosmic Rays from 0.3 to 30 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 132:131002. [PMID: 38613275 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.132.131002] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/13/2023] [Revised: 01/23/2024] [Accepted: 02/12/2024] [Indexed: 04/14/2024]
Abstract
We present the measurements of all-particle energy spectrum and mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays in the energy range of 0.3-30 PeV using data collected from LHAASO-KM2A between September 2021 and December 2022, which is based on a nearly composition-independent energy reconstruction method, achieving unprecedented accuracy. Our analysis reveals the position of the knee at 3.67±0.05±0.15 PeV. Below the knee, the spectral index is found to be -2.7413±0.0004±0.0050, while above the knee, it is -3.128±0.005±0.027, with the sharpness of the transition measured with a statistical error of 2%. The mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays is almost heavier than helium in the whole measured energy range. It decreases from 1.7 at 0.3 PeV to 1.3 at 3 PeV, representing a 24% decline following a power law with an index of -0.1200±0.0003±0.0341. This is equivalent to an increase in abundance of light components. Above the knee, the mean logarithmic mass exhibits a power law trend towards heavier components, which is reversal to the behavior observed in the all-particle energy spectrum. Additionally, the knee position and the change in power-law index are approximately the same. These findings suggest that the knee observed in the all-particle spectrum corresponds to the knee of the light component, rather than the medium-heavy components.

Measurement of Ultra-High-Energy Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission of the Galactic Plane from 10 TeV to 1 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:151001. Abstract
The diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission, mainly produced via interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium and/or radiation field, is a very important probe of the distribution, propagation, and interaction of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. In this Letter, we report the measurements of diffuse γ rays from the Galactic plane between 10 TeV and 1 PeV energies, with the square kilometer array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Diffuse emissions from the inner (15°10 TeV). The energy spectrum in the inner Galaxy regions can be described by a power-law function with an index of -2.99±0.04, which is different from the curved spectrum as expected from hadronic interactions between locally measured cosmic rays and the line-of-sight integrated gas content. Furthermore, the measured flux is higher by a factor of ∼3 than the prediction. A similar spectrum with an index of -2.99±0.07 is found in the outer Galaxy region, and the absolute flux for 10≲E≲60 TeV is again higher than the prediction for hadronic cosmic ray interactions. The latitude distributions of the diffuse emission are consistent with the gas distribution, while the longitude distributions show clear deviation from the gas distribution. The LHAASO measurements imply that either additional emission sources exist or cosmic ray intensities have spatial variations.

Abstract
To investigate the effect and the mechanism of ppk1 gene deletion on the drug susceptibility of uropathogenic Escherichia coli producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs-UPEC). The study was an experimental study. From March to April 2021, a strain of ESBLs-UPEC (genotype was TEM combined with CTX-M-14) named as UE210113, was isolated from urine sample of the patient with urinary tract infection in the Laboratory Department of Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital, meanwhile its ppk1 gene knock-out strain Δpk1 and complemented strain Δpk1-C were constructed by suicide plasmid homologous recombination technique, which was used to study the effect of ppk1 gene on ESBLs-UPEC drug sensitivity and its mechanism. The drug susceptibility of UE210113, Δpk1, and Δpk1-C were measured by Vitek2 Compact System and broth microdilution method. The quantitative expression of ESBLs, outer membrane protein and multidrug efflux systems encoding genes of UE210113, Δpk1 and Δpk1-C were performed by using qRT-PCR analysis. By using two independent sample Mann-Whitney U test, the drug susceptibility results showed that, compared with UE210113 strain, the sensitivities of Δpk1 to ceftazidime, cefepime, tobramycin, minocycline and cotrimoxazole were enhanced (Z=-2.121,P<0.05;Z=-2.236,P<0.05;Z=-2.236,P<0.05;Z=-2.121,P<0.05), and the drug susceptibility of Δpk1-C restored to the same as which of UE210113 (Z=0,P>0.05). The expression levels of ESBLs-enconding genes blaTEM and blaCTX-M-14 in Δpk1 were significantly down-regulated compared with UE210113, but the expression was not restored in Δpk1-C. The expression of outer membrane protein gene omp F in Δpk1 was significantly up-regulated, while the expression of omp A and omp C were down-regulated. The results showed that the expression of multidrug efflux systems encoding genes tol C, mdt A and mdtG were down-regulated in Δpk1 compared with UE210113. The expression of all of the outer membrane protein genes and the multidrug efflux systems genes were restored in Δpk1-C. In conclusion, the lost of ppk1 gene can affect the expression of the outer membrane protein and multidrug efflux systems encoding genes of ESBLs-UPEC, which increase the sensitivity of ESBLs-UPEC to various drugs.

Abstract
Pruritus is one of the common symptoms after burn injury, which seriously affects the wound healing and quality of life of burn patients, but its diagnosis and treatment are often neglected. The pathophysiological mechanism of post-burn pruritus has not been elucidated, and it is currently believed that post-burn pruritus is caused by the neuropathic factors. In addition, there is no consensus on the standard evaluation methods and treatment protocols for post-burn pruritus. This paper reviewed the research advances on the pathophysiological mechanism, disease evaluation, and treatment of post-burn pruritus.

Abstract
Some gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have a tera-electron volt (TeV) afterglow, but the early onset of this has not been observed. We report observations with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory of the bright GRB 221009A, which serendipitously occurred within the instrument field of view. More than 64,000 photons >0.2 TeV were detected within the first 3000 seconds. The TeV flux began several minutes after the GRB trigger, then rose to a peak about 10 seconds later. This was followed by a decay phase, which became more rapid ~650 seconds after the peak. We interpret the emission using a model of a relativistic jet with half-opening angle ~0.8°. This is consistent with the core of a structured jet and could explain the high isotropic energy of this GRB.

Abstract
Objective: Cancer immunotherapy can lead to various side effects, termed immune-related adverse events (irAE). This study summarized and analyzed the clinical and pathological characteristics of immune-mediated liver injury caused by immune checkpoint inhibitors (ILICI). Methods: This is a retrospective case series study involving 11 patients diagnosed with ILICI at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital from November 2019 to November 2021. Patient demographic information and clinical data, including gender, age, ILICI onset, clinical and radiological manifestations, pathological features, treatment, and resumption of ICI were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Results: The patients were primarily males (9/11) with a median age of 65 (range: 32-73) years. ICI mainly resulted in either partial remission (4/11) or stable disease (3/11). ILICI occurred after a median of two cycles of anti-programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) therapy, with a median time from the initial and last anti-PD-1 therapy to ILICI onset of 57 days and 17 days, respectively. ILICI was mostly severe (3/11) or very severe (6/11). While the clinical and radiological manifestations were non-specific, the pathological features were active lobular hepatitis and portal inflammation, with prominent CD8+T lymphocyte infiltration. The basic treatment was hepatoprotective drugs (10/11). Glucocorticoids were used as the primary therapy (9/11) but were ineffective in 4 of 9 cases. Of these, 3 of 9 cases received combined treatment with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), only one of whom achieved remission. By the end of the study, 2 of 11 cases had resumed ICI and neither had experienced an ILICI relapse. Conclusion: The ILICI patients in this study had a corresponding history of ICI treatment and pathological features. The main treatment included hepatoprotective drugs and glucocorticoids. Immunosuppressive drugs were added for some cases but had poor efficacy.

Abstract
The kilometer square array (KM2A) of the large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO) aims at surveying the northern γ-ray sky at energies above 10 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity. γ-ray observations have long been one of the most powerful tools for dark matter searches, as, e.g., high-energy γ rays could be produced by the decays of heavy dark matter particles. In this Letter, we present the first dark matter analysis with LHAASO-KM2A, using the first 340 days of data from 1/2-KM2A and 230 days of data from 3/4-KM2A. Several regions of interest are used to search for a signal and account for the residual cosmic-ray background after γ/hadron separation. We find no excess of dark matter signals, and thus place some of the strongest γ-ray constraints on the lifetime of heavy dark matter particles with mass between 10^{5} and 10^{9} GeV. Our results with LHAASO are robust, and have important implications for dark matter interpretations of the diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino emission.

Abstract
Recently, the LHAASO Collaboration published the detection of 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources above 100 TeV, with the highest energy photon reaching 1.4 PeV. The first detection of PeV γ rays from astrophysical sources may provide a very sensitive probe of the effect of the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV), which results in decay of high-energy γ rays in the superluminal scenario and hence a sharp cutoff of the energy spectrum. Two highest energy sources are studied in this work. No signature of the existence of the LIV is found in their energy spectra, and the lower limits on the LIV energy scale are derived. Our results show that the first-order LIV energy scale should be higher than about 10^{5} times the Planck scale M_{Pl} and that the second-order LIV scale is >10^{-3}M_{Pl}. Both limits improve by at least one order of magnitude the previous results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on postoperative ileus after laparotomy for gastrointestinal cancer. METHODS A total of 90 patients with postoperative ileus after laparotomy for gastrointestinal cancer were randomized into an EA group and a conventional treatment group, 45 cases in each one. In the conventional treatment group, the postoperative fast track surgical regimen was accepted. In the EA group, on the base of the treatment as the conventional treatment group, acupuncture was applied to Zusanli (ST 36), Shangjuxu (ST 37), Yinlingquan (SP 9) and Taichong (LR 3) and electric stimulation was attached on Zusanli (ST 36) and Yinlingquan (SP 9), with continuous wave, 2 Hz in frequency and 3-5 mA in intensity. Acupuncture was provided once daily till the onset of postoperative exhaust and defecation. The first postoperative exhaust time, the first postoperative defecation time, the postoperative hospital stay and the wound pain under standing on the next morning after entering group were compared in the patients between the two groups. The impact of the EA expectation was analyzed on the first postoperative exhaust time, the first postoperative defecation time and the postoperative hospital stay separately. RESULTS The first postoperative exhaust time and the first postoperative defecation time in the EA group were earlier than the conventional treatment group (P<0.05), the postoperative hospital stay was shorter than the conventional treatment group (P<0.05), and the rate of wound pain in the postoperative standing was lower than the conventional treatment group (P<0.05). EA expectation had no obvious correlation with the clinical therapeutic effect (P>0.05). CONCLUSION EA can relieve postoperative ileus symptoms, alleviate pain and shorten hospital stay in the patients after laparotomy for gastrointestinal cancer.

P–291 Searching for a suitable serum progesterone range at triggering day to achieve optimal cumulative live birth rate in high responders – Which range is better? Hum Reprod 2021. Abstract
Abstract
Study question
Is there a suitable range of serum progestereone level at triggering day to optimize the cumulative live birth rate (LBR) in high responders?
Summary answer
Fom the point of view of cLBR, the optimal P4 range for triggering is between 1.5 to 2.5 ng/ml generally and in the high responders.
What is known already
It is well established that premature progesterone rise (PPR) affect adversely the pregnancy outcome in fresh embryo transfer cycle. It is inferred that PPR alters synchrony between endometrium and the embryos. However, detailed study of the effect of PPR on efficiency of oocyte retrieval , embryo quality and the subsequent cumulative pregnancy outcome is still lacking. Hence we sort to analyze the effect of PPR on the final cumulative LBR in our program especially focused on high responders.
Study design, size, duration
ART Database in our center was retrospectively reviewed. Total 1523 cycles between 20160101 and 20191231 were recruited under the condition of GnRH antagonist cycle with duration of ovulation induction for more than 5 days and available serum P4 level data on triggering day for data analysis for the relationship between serum P4 value and final cumulative LBRs.
Participants/materials, setting, methods
Cycles with serum P4 level < 1.5 ng/ml were defined as without PPR (Group A: n = 1383). Cycles with serum P4 level >1.5 were defined as with PPR: P4 between 1.5 and 2.5 as Group B (n = 113), P4 > 2.5 as Group C (n = 27). Those high responding cycles (n = 404) were analyzed similarly and separately as Group A’ (n = 304), B’ (n = 81) and C’(n = 19). The statistics were carried out by SPSS-PC ver. 22.0 with p < 0.05 as statistical significance.
Main results and the role of chance
Group A had significantly lower number of oocytes (9.8 + 8.0) retrieved as compared to Group B (19.3 + 11.2) and Group C (18.2 + 9.9). However there were no differences in fertilization rate, good embryo rates and BC formation rates between groups. The cumulative LBR (cLBR) were significantly higher in Group B (65.1%) as compared to Group A (40.9%, p < 0.001) and Group C (37.0%, p = 0.008). For the high responding cycles, Group B’ also had marginally significant higher cLBR (75.3%) as compared to group A’(63.8% ; p=0.051) and Group C’ (52.6%; p = 0.050). Comparisons between Group A’ and C revealed significantly less oocytes retrieved but significantly higher blastocyst formation rates in Group A’ and the resultant cLBR were comparable between these two groups. Comparisons between Groups B’ and C’ revealed comparable oocytes retrieved but significant lower blastocyst formation rates and cLBRs in Group C’. The baseline of the first part analysis revealed higher age and lower AMH in Group A, but comparable age and AMH between groups B and C.The lower cLBR in group A could be due to selection bias. The second part (high responders) showed comparable baselines between three groups. However, the case numbers are too few in group C’ which might also result in uncertainty.
Limitations, reasons for caution
Although the data revealed interesting, significantly different results between groups, this is only a retrospective analysis from our ART patient series. Selection bias could not be precluded. Analysis restricted to high responders could have a more balanced population for comparisons. However, more cases are needed to affirm the findings.
Wider implications of the findings: We still do not know the tolerable ceiling of serum P4 at the triggering day in high responders if future FET already planned. Pushing P4 value too high not only could not increase mature oocyte yields and possibly may decrease the number of available good blastocysts for optimizing final cLBRs.

Abstract
Objective: To introduce the design, manufacture and clinical application of the custom-made temporomandibular joint (TMJ)-skull base combined prosthesis and evaluate its safety, effectiveness and accuracy. Methods: The patients diagnosed with the TMJ-skull base lesion in Department of Oral Surgery, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital from October 2016 to November 2020 were recruited in this study. The maxillofacial CT data for all the patients were obtained and transformed into the Mimics 18.0 software preoperatively. The custom-made TMJ-skull base combined prosthesis, included four components, was designed based on the anatomy, stress distribution and movement of the TMJ and skull base, and fabricated by three-dimensional printing and 5-axis milling technologies. The TMJ-skull base lesion was excised completely with the help of digital templates from modified preauricular and/or post and submandibular incisions. The combined prosthesis were implanted and fixed after the lesion resection. The examinations including general situation, cranio-maxillofacial structure and function were taken during and after surgery to assess its using effect. Results: Ten patients [6 females and 4 males, (43.2±13.6) years old] were included and all prostheses were positioned accurately and fixed excellently. After (29.4±17.3) months follow-up, the occlusion relationship was stable and no adverse symptoms such as dizziness, headache, meningeal irritation and permanent facial nerve injury occurred. The pain, diet, mandibular movement function, lateral movement to diseased side and mouth opening had significant improvements. The forward movement and lateral movement to normal side were not improved significantly. There were no prosthesis displacement, loosening and fracture in X-ray and CT postoperatively. With the pre and postoperative craniomaxillofacial model merging, the maximal implanted error was (0.52±0.17) mm for fossa and condyle and (1.62±0.26) mm for skull base and mandibular handle in surface deviation analysis. Conclusions: The custom-made TMJ-skull base combined prosthesis with customized design and 3D printing fabrication is safe, effective and precise in clinical application.

The Crab Nebula is a bright source of gamma rays powered by the Crab Pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind. We report the detection of gamma rays from this source with energies from 5 × 10-4 to 1.1 peta-electron volts with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades. The ultrahigh-energy photons imply the presence of a peta-electron volt electron accelerator (a pevatron) in the nebula, with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the theoretical limit. We constrain the pevatron's size between 0.025 and 0.1 parsecs and the magnetic field to ≈110 microgauss. The production rate of peta-electron volt electrons, 2.5 × 1036 ergs per second, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar spin-down luminosity, although we cannot exclude a contribution of peta-electron volt protons to the production of the highest-energy gamma rays.

Extended Very-High-Energy Gamma-Ray Emission Surrounding PSR J0622+3749 Observed by LHAASO-KM2A. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 126:241103. Abstract
We report the discovery of an extended very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray source around the location of the middle-aged (207.8 kyr) pulsar PSR J0622+3749 with the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). The source is detected with a significance of 8.2σ for E>25 TeV assuming a Gaussian template. The best-fit location is (right ascension, declination) =(95.47°±0.11°,37.92°±0.09°), and the extension is 0.40°±0.07°. The energy spectrum can be described by a power-law spectrum with an index of -2.92±0.17_{stat}±0.02_{sys}. No clear extended multiwavelength counterpart of the LHAASO source has been found from the radio to sub-TeV bands. The LHAASO observations are consistent with the scenario that VHE electrons escaped from the pulsar, diffused in the interstellar medium, and scattered the interstellar radiation field. If interpreted as the pulsar halo scenario, the diffusion coefficient, inferred for electrons with median energies of ∼160 TeV, is consistent with those obtained from the extended halos around Geminga and Monogem and much smaller than that derived from cosmic ray secondaries. The LHAASO discovery of this source thus likely enriches the class of so-called pulsar halos and confirms that high-energy particles generally diffuse very slowly in the disturbed medium around pulsars.

Ultrahigh-energy photons up to 1.4 petaelectronvolts from 12 γ-ray Galactic sources. Nature 2021; 594:33-36. Abstract
The extension of the cosmic-ray spectrum beyond 1 petaelectronvolt (PeV; 1015 electronvolts) indicates the existence of the so-called PeVatrons-cosmic-ray factories that accelerate particles to PeV energies. We need to locate and identify such objects to find the origin of Galactic cosmic rays1. The principal signature of both electron and proton PeVatrons is ultrahigh-energy (exceeding 100 TeV) γ radiation. Evidence of the presence of a proton PeVatron has been found in the Galactic Centre, according to the detection of a hard-spectrum radiation extending to 0.04 PeV (ref. 2). Although γ-rays with energies slightly higher than 0.1 PeV have been reported from a few objects in the Galactic plane3-6, unbiased identification and in-depth exploration of PeVatrons requires detection of γ-rays with energies well above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the detection of more than 530 photons at energies above 100 teraelectronvolts and up to 1.4 PeV from 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources with a statistical significance greater than seven standard deviations. Despite having several potential counterparts in their proximity, including pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants and star-forming regions, the PeVatrons responsible for the ultrahigh-energy γ-rays have not yet been firmly localized and identified (except for the Crab Nebula), leaving open the origin of these extreme accelerators.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological features, differential diagnosis and molecular characteristics of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) with hemangioblastoma component (ccRCC-HBc). Methods: Two ccRCC-HBc cases diagnosed at Fujian Provincial Hospital in September 2015 and March 2016, respectively, were included. Their morphological, immunohistochemical and molecular features were analyzed, including fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) detection of TFE3, TFEB and VHL genes. Related literature was reviewed to reveal the characteristics of this tumor. Results: The two cases occurred in 2 women, aged 33 and 66 years, respectively. The maximum diameters of the tumors were 4.0 cm and 8.5 cm, respectively. Histologically, the ccRCC component, representing approximate 10%-20% of the neoplasm, while the tumor cells arranged in flaky, nested, and solid distribution. The tumor cells had conspicuous nucleoli, with rich thin-wall capillary network in the stroma. The hemangioblastoma-like component, representing approximate 60%-70% of the neoplasm, showed a rich capillary network of single-layered flat endothelial cells enclosing stromal cells. The latter cell type showed a pale or eosinophilic cytoplasm exhibiting occasional lipid droplets. Rare cell nuclei appeared enlarged, pleomorphic, or bizarre. The two components were intermingled with each other. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for PAX8, CKpan, EMA, vimentin, CD10, RCC, CAⅨ, and P504s in ccRCC area; in another area, the tumor cells were positive for α-inhibin, CD34 and vimentin, while CD10 were weakly positive. Neither TFE3 or TFEB gene split signal was detected in the 2 cases (0/2), nor was VHL gene mutation in case 2 (0/1). Conclusion: ccRCC-HBc is an extremely rare entity of ccRCC. The diagnosis is mainly based on clinical and pathological characteristics, as well as immunohistochemistry. Molecular pathology is helpful for its differential diagnosis. The primary approach of treating ccRCC-HBc is complete surgical excision and chemotherapy. The targeted treatment is helpful if possible.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the airway and voice quality improvement in patients with bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP) who underwent selective laryngeal reinnervation surgery. Methods: From January 2012 to December 2016, a retrospective study was conducted in 39 patients with BVFP who underwent selective laryngeal reinnervation surgery in Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, the First Affiliated Hospital of Navy Medical University. All patients were examined by videostroboscopy, vocal function assessment, laryngeal electromyography and pulmonary function test before and after the surgery, and followed up for at least 2 years to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the surgery.Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to analyze the G score and VHI-10 score data. Paired t-test was used to analyze acoustic parameters, MPT values and pulmonary function parameters. Results: Postoperative infection and hemorrhage occurred in one patient separately.Videostroboscopic videos showed that at 4-8 months postoperatively, vocal folds in 35 patients achieved moderate or severe abduction during inspiration, 2 patients only achieved mild abduction, 2 patients showed no abduction, while all patients achieved adduction in bilateral vocal cords during phonation. The recovery rate of moderate-to-severe abduction was 89.7% (35/39), and these patients were decannulated successfully. At 12 months after operation, G score and VHI-10 score were significantly lower than those before operation (P<0.05), and the acoustic parameters jitter, shimmer, HNR and MPT were significantly improved (P<0.05). Most of the parameters of the pulmonary function test at 3 months postoperatively returned to the normal reference level, while the maximum inspiratory pressure (PImax) at 12 months after operation was still slightly lower than the normal level, but it was significantly improved compared with preoperative value (P<0.05). The EMG data at 12 months postoperatively showed full interference potentials in 37 patients in bilateral posterior cricoarytenoid muscles during inspiration, and full interference potentials in bilateralthyroarytenoid muscles during phonation. Obvious misdirected regeneration electric activitieswere found in two of them. Potentials in posterior cricoarytenoid muscle were weak in 2 cases with poor abduction. During long-term follow-up, only one case showed decreased abduction, but did not affect respiratory function. Conclusions: The selective laryngeal reinnervation procedure applied in the present study can restore physiological motion of vocal cords. The success rate was high, the curative effect was stable, and the complications were rare. It is worth of promotion.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of esculin on the proliferation of triple negative breast cancer cells and its molecular mechanism. Methods: MDA-MB-231 cells were treated with 28, 56, 112, 225, 450 and 900 μmol/L of esculin for 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively, and the cell viability was detected by cell counting kit 8 (CCK-8) assay. In addition, MDA-MB-231 cells were treated with 0, 225, 450 and 900 μmol/L of esculin for 48 h. And then the changes in cell morphology were observed by inverted microscope. The clone-forming ability was detected by colony formation assay. The mRNA expression levels of FBI-1, p53 and p21 were detected using real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The protein expression levels of FBI-1, p53, p21 and Ki67 were detected by western blot. Results: Compared with the blank control group, the cell viability of MDA-MB-231 cells that treated with esculin significantly decreased in a dose-dependent and time-dependent manners. After treatment with esculin, MDA-MB-231 cells shrunk, flattened, adhered poorly to the culture dish and the cell spacing became larger. Meanwhile, shedding and incomplete cells appeared, of which 900 μmol/L of esculin treatment group showed the most dramatic changes. In addition, the colony formation ratios were decreased to (77.18±5.13)%, (65.94±4.98)% and (45.92±3.70)% in the 225, 450 and 900 μmol/L of esculin treatment groups compared with blank control, respectively (P<0.01). Furthermore, the mRNA and protein expressions of FBI-1 increased, while the levels of p53 and p21 mRNA and protein, as well as the protein expression of Ki67 decreased in a concentration-dependent manner (P<0.01). Conclusion: Esculin may regulate cell cycle-related p53-p21 pathway via FBI-1 mediated DNA replication, thus inhibit the proliferation of triple negative breast cancer cells.

Methionine improves feather follicle development in chick embryos by activating Wnt/β-catenin signaling. Poult Sci 2020; 99:4479-4487. [PMID: 32867991 PMCID: PMC7598098 DOI: 10.1016/j.psj.2020.05.047] [Citation(s) in RCA: 12] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/24/2019] [Revised: 04/27/2020] [Accepted: 05/22/2020] [Indexed: 01/22/2023] Open
Abstract
This study was conducted to explore the regulatory role of methionine (Met) in feather follicle and feather development during the embryonic period of chicks. A total of 280 fertile eggs (40 eggs/group) were injected with 0, 5, 10, 20 mg of L-Met or DL-Met/per egg on embryonic day 9 (E9), and whole-body feather and skin tissues were collected on E15 and the day of hatching (DOH). The whole-body feather weight was determined to describe the feather growth, and the skin samples were subjected to hematoxylin and eosin staining and Western blotting for the evaluation of feather follicle development and the expressions of Wingless/Int (Wnt)/β-catenin signaling pathway proteins, respectively. The results showed that L- or DL-Met did not affect the embryo weight (P > 0.05), but increased the absolute and relative whole-body feather weights. Specifically, 5 and 10 mg of L-Met and 5, 10, and 20 mg of DL-Met significantly increased the absolute feather weight at E15 (P < 0.05), and 10 mg of L-Met and 5 and 10 mg of DL-Met significantly increased the absolute and relative feather weight on the DOH (P < 0.05). Moreover, a main effect analysis suggested that changes in the embryo and feather weights were related to the Met levels (P < 0.05) but not the Met source (P > 0.05). The levels of L- and DL-Met were quadratically correlated with the absolute and relative feather weights of chicks on the DOH (P < 0.05). Correspondingly, all doses of L- and DL-Met significantly increased the diameter and density of feather follicles on the DOH (P < 0.05), as well as the activity of Wnt/β-catenin on E15 and the DOH (P < 0.05). In conclusion, injection of either L- or DL-Met can improve feather follicle development by activating Wnt/β-catenin signaling, and thereby promoting feather growth; furthermore, no difference in feather growth was found between L- and DL-Met treatments. Our findings might provide a nutritional intervention for regulating feather growth in poultry production.

Investigation of feather follicle morphogenesis and the expression of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in yellow-feathered broiler chick embryos. Br Poult Sci 2020; 61:557-565. Abstract
1. This study investigated the pattern of feather follicle morphogenesis and the expression of the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway in the skin of yellow-feathered broiler chick embryos during feather development, using haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and Western blot assays, respectively. 2. The results showed that the skin displayed protrusions during embryonic days E7-E9, feather buds elongated during E10-E11 with anterior-posterior and proximal-distal asymmetries, and the epidermis invaginated to form the primary feather follicles (Pfs) at E12. At E13, the formation of the feather follicle and the epidermis at the base of the feather bud further invaginated into the dermis. By E15, Pf formation was essentially complete, and secondary feather follicles (Sfs) appeared. It was speculated that Pfs and Sfs developed independently and that Pfs occurred earlier than Sfs. 3. Quantitative measurements of Pf density reached a maximum at E15 and then decreased gradually. Sf density started to increase from E15. 4. Protein expression levels of β-catenin, TCF4, cyclin D1, and c-Myc were significantly increased during E8-E12 (P < 0.05) and then decreased from E13 to the day of hatching (DOH) (P < 0.05). The result of the β-catenin immunolocalisation signal intensity assay was consistent with the result of the Western blot assay. 5. Collectively, the results indicated that the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway is essential for promoting the development of feather follicles, especially during E7-E15.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the feasibility of short-term efficacy prognosis prediction model for HCC patients undergoing transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) based on MRI-based radiomics technique. Methods: A total of 123 patients with liver cancer who received TACE treatment in Lishui Central Hospital from June 2016 to July 2018 were retrospectively collected, including 90 males and 33 females, with an average age of 24-83 (58±10) years. All the patients were pathologically confirmed as hepatocellular carcinoma and underwent MRI scan before surgery. All patients were followed up 3-4 months after TACE, and further divided into training group (n=85, 42 of which were effective and 43 cases were ineffective) and the validation group (n=38, 19 of which were effective and 19 were ineffective) according to the modified response evaluation criteria in solid tumors (mRECIST). There was no statistical difference in the general information between the two groups of patients, which was comparable. Then, preoperative T(2)WI images were used for radiomics analysis, texture parameters were screened based on R language, and short-term efficacy prediction model of TACE for training group and verification group was constructed. Results: T(2)WI image analysis of each patient received 396 different texture parameters, and further used Lasso dimensionality reduction and 10 times cross-validation screening to obtain 5 characteristic texture parameters, specifically stdDeviation, ClusterProminence_angle135_offset4, Correlation_angle135_offset4, Inertia_angle135_offset4, InverseDifferenceMoment_angle45_offset4. According to the above five texture parameters and their corresponding coefficient values, the corresponding radiomics scores (Radscore) were calculated, and the prediction models of the training group and the verification group were further constructed. It was found that the area under the ROC curve of the training group was 0.812 (95%CI: 0.722-0.901), the sensitivity and specificity were 83.7% and 69.0%, respectively. The area under the ROC curve of the validation group was 0.801 (95%CI:0.654-0.947), and the sensitivity and specificity were 89.5% and 63.2%, respectively. Conclusion: The constructed TACE prediction model in the present study has high prediction accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. The short-term efficacy prognosis prediction model for HCC based on MRI is constructed, stable and reliable.

Targeted disruption of TORC1 retards young squab growth by inhibiting the synthesis of crop milk protein in breeding pigeon (Columba livia). Poult Sci 2020; 99:416-422. Abstract
This study was conducted to explore the regulatory role of the target of rapamycin complex 1 (TORC1) signaling pathway in crop milk synthesis in breeding pigeons (Columba livia). Three groups of breeding pigeons in the lactation period (n = 30 pairs/group) were respectively injected with rapamycin (RAPA, a specific inhibitor of the target of rapamycin complex) at doses of 0 (vehicle, control), 0.6, or 1.2 mg/kg body weight (BW)/day via the wing vein for 7 days. The average daily feed intake (ADFI) and BW of the breeding pigeons and the BW of young squabs were respectively recorded throughout the experimental period. The breeding pigeons were sacrificed to collect their crop tissues, crop milk, and serum on the eighth day of the experiment. The results showed that neither 0.6 nor 1.2 mg/kg BW RAPA injection affected BW loss or ADFI in breeding pigeons (P > 0.05), while crop thickness and crop relative weight were significantly decreased (P < 0.05) in the 1.2 mg/kg BW rapamycin-injected group. Simultaneously, RAPA (especially at 1.2 mg/kg BW) decreased the crude protein, αs1-casein, αs2-casein, β-casein, and amino acid contents (Asp, Thr, Ser, Glu, Gly, Ala, Cys, Val, Met, Ile, Leu, Tyr, Lys, His, Arg, and Pro) of crop milk (P < 0.05) and the concentrations of albumin, total protein, and uric acid in the serum of breeding pigeons (P < 0.05). Additionally, the expression of TORC1 pathway-related proteins (TORC1, S6K1, S6, 4EBP1, and eIF4E) was downregulated in the crop tissues of breeding pigeons by 0.6 or 1.2 mg/kg BW/day RAPA injection (P < 0.05). Accordingly, the average daily gain (ADG) of young squabs declined, and the mortality rate increased significantly (P < 0.05). Together, the results showed that RAPA reduced protein and amino acid levels in the crop milk of breeding pigeons and retarded young squab growth, suggesting a crucial role of TORC1 in crop milk synthesis in breeding pigeons.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the feasibility of 7, 12-dimethylbenz[a] anthracene (DMBA) induced tree shrew breast cancer model, and compare the effects of two administration modes by gavage and mammary gland injection. Methods: A total of 40 tree shrews were randomly divided into two groups (20 animals per group): DMBA gavage group and mammary gland injection group. DMBA was dissolved in edible vegetable oil. For gavage group, tree shrews were administered with DMBA solutions (15 mg/kg) by gavage once a day. For mammary gland injection group, DMBA solution (10 mg/kg) was injected into the mammary fat pad of tree shrews, and the injection was performed for a total of 3 times. From the first administration of DMBA, medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA, 100 mg/kg) was intramuscularly injected into the muscles of the lateral thighs of tree shrews at the same time, for a total of 5 times. The tumorigenesis and survival of tree shrews were monitored. The tumor histological morphology was observed by HE staining. The expression of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), cytokeratin5/6 (CK5/6) and human epidermal factor receptor-2 (HER-2) was detected by immunohistochemical staining. Results: In the gavage group, there were 10 deaths, and 4 tree shrews developed mammary tumors with 20.0% (4/20) tumor formation rate. The success rate of mammary cancer modeling was 10.0% (2/20), and the tumor formation time was 197.3±15.1 days. In the mammary gland injection group, there were 8 tree shrews died, and 9 tree shrews formed tumors with 45.0% (9/20) tumor formation rate. The success rate of mammary cancer modeling was 40.0% (8/20), and the tumor formation time was 71.8±19.0 days. There was no significant difference in mortality and tumor formation rate (P>0.05) between the two groups (all P>0.05). However, in the mammary gland injection group, the success rate of mammary cancer modeling was significantly higher than that in the gavage group (P<0.05), whereas the tumor formation time was markedly shorter than that in the gavage group (P<0.01). The pathological types in the gavage group included ductal hyperplasia, intraductal papilloma and ductal carcinoma in situ, while those in the breast injection group included intraductal papilloma and ductal carcinoma in situ. In both groups, immunohistochemical staining showed the negative expression of HER-2 but positive expression of ER, PR and CK5/6 with varying degrees. Conclusion: Both the DMBA gavage and mammary gland injection can successfully establish the tree shrew breast cancer model, and the modeling effect of mammary gland injection is better than gavage.

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between maternal tea consumption and birth outcomes. Methods: From January 2005 to December 2010, pregnant women were recruited from Nanjing Maternity and Child Health Hospital. The basic information and the situation of tea consumption during pregnancy were investigated using questionnaire and the birth outcomes of newborns were followed up. Finally, 500 pairs of mothers and infants with complete and standard-compliant data were included in the analysis. The differences of birth outcomes between the tea consumption group and the non tea consumption group were compared and the associations between tea consumption and birth outcomes were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. Results: Mother's tea consumption rate was 32.8% (164 cases) during pregnancy. The rate of low birth weight in the tea consumption group was (5.5%, 9 cases) and higher than that in the non-tea consumption group (2.1%, 7 cases) (P=0.042). There was no significant difference in the rate of premature birth, small for gestational age, fetal distress, and macrosomia between the two groups After the adjustment of maternal age, education level, family income, weight gain during pregnancy, pre-pregnancy BMI, parity, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, neonatal gender and gestational age, compared with non-tea consumption group, there was a positive effect on low birth weight, OR(95%CI) was 4.76 (1.06-21.48). The OR (95%CI) value of the low birth weight risk of the tea group was 5.30 (1.04-26.92) compared with the non-tea consumption group after the adjustment of additional factors such as passive smoking, coffee consumption, folic acid supplement, mineral supplement, carbonated beverage consumption. Simultaneously, compared with non-tea consumption group, there was no statistically significant association between tea consumption during pregnancy and premature birth, small for gestational age, fetal distress and macrosomia (P>0.05). Conclusion: Tea consumption during pregnancy was a risk factor for low birth weight in offspring.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the expression of factor that binds to inducer of short transcripts-1 of HIV (FBI-1)in breast cancer pre- and pro-neoadjuvant chemotherapy and explore the relationship between FBI-1 expression and treatment efficacy. Methods: We collected 50 patients with breast cancer who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy before operation in the Affiliated Tumor Hospital of Guangxi Medical University from January, 2010 to December, 2014. The expression of FBI-1 in breast cancer tissues pre- and pro-neoadjuvant chemotherapy was detected by immunohistochemical staining. We compared the level of FBI-1 expression pre- and pro-neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and tried to explore its relationship with patient and tumor characteristics and treatment efficacy. Results: (1) The rate of upregulated expression of FBI-1 in breast cancer tissues was 70% (35/50). The upregulated expression of FBI-1 was related to the higher clinical stage and trend of lymph node metastasis (P<0.05), whereas not related to the age and expression of ER, PR, Ki-67, and Her-2(P>0.05); (2) the setting of FBI-1 lower expression pre-neoadjuvant chemotherapy had superior treatment outcome than the high expression setting based on either clinical assessment (86.7% vs 51.4%, P=0.027) or pathological assessment(80.0% vs 28.6%, P=0.001); (3) the rate of upregulated FBI-1 expression was significantly decreased post-neoadjuvant chemotherapy(70.0% vs 38.0%, P=0.004), with FBI-1 expression of 22 patients downregulated (62.9%); (4) the expression of FBI-1 in responded setting was significantly decreased than that in the non-responded setting based on either clinical (77.4% vs 26.3%, P=0.001) or pathological (72.7% vs 39.3%, P=0.024) assessment. The downregulation of FBI-1 was correlated to either clinical efficacy (r=0.440, P<0.01) or pathological efficacy (r=0.491, P<0.05) of neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Conclusion: In breast cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy, the upregulated expression of FBI-1 in breast cancer lesion is associated with clinical stage and lymph node metastasis. The neoadjuvant chemotherapy can significantly reduce the expression of FBI-1. The upregulated expression of FBI-1 may be predictive of resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs, and has predictive value for the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer patients.

Abstract
Self-assembled nanostructures are important for determining the physical properties of epitaxial oxide films. We successfully fabricated perfectly ordered NiO nano-columns embedded in an antiferroelectric (AFE) PbZrO3 (PZO) matrix over large areas. In this system, a giant recoverable energy storage density of Wr = 24.6 J cm-3 and polarization of PS = 91 μC cm-2 were achieved in the structure of PZO : NiO nano-composites. These values are 333% and 253% larger than those of a pure PZO film, respectively. Additionally, the properties could be tuned by gradually changing the volume ratio of the constituents. Hence, we demonstrate a new approach for enhancing the energy storage of AFE materials and exercising control over nano-column-embedded nanocomposites.

Birth prevalence of hypospadias and hypospadias risk factors in newborn males in the United States from 1997 to 2012. J Pediatr Urol 2018; 14:425.e1-425.e7. [PMID: 30322769 DOI: 10.1016/j.jpurol.2018.08.024] [Citation(s) in RCA: 9] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/06/2018] [Accepted: 08/31/2018] [Indexed: 01/07/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypospadias is a common genitourinary malformation and there are conflicting data on whether its prevalence is increasing. Previous studies have described associations with risk factors including small for gestational age (SGA), multiple gestation birth, environmental influences, and maternal factors. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to examine birth prevalence of hypospadias and hypospadias risk factors in a large national dataset and to evaluate for changes from 1997 to 2012. We hypothesized that any increase in the birth prevalence of hypospadias would be associated with an increase in risk factors such as SGA, prematurity, or multiple gestation birth. STUDY DESIGN The Kids' Inpatient Database was used to generate national estimates for prevalence of males born with hypospadias, SGA, prematurity, or to a multiple gestation and then prevalences were evaluated for association with time. Multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate whether birth prevalence of hypospadias was associated with increasing year, SGA, prematurity, and multiple gestation birth. RESULTS The estimated birth prevalence of hypospadias increased from 6.1 per 1000 births (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.9 to 6.3) to 6.8 per 1000 births (95% CI 6.7 to 7.0), an 11.5% increase from 1997-2012 (P = 0.014). Among male births, the prevalence of SGA increased 74%, multiple gestation increased 25%, and prematurity increased 20% (P < 0.001 for all) (Summary Figure). A risk factor was seen in around 20% of males born with hypospadias. Hypospadias birth prevalence also increased in males without risk factors but was not statistically significant (9.1% increase, P = 0.5). On multivariable logistic regression, being born SGA (odds ratio [OR] = 3.3), to a multiple gestation (OR = 1.1), or premature (OR 1.9) were associated with increased odds of hypospadias (P < 0.01 for all), whereas increasing year was not (P = 0.3). CONCLUSIONS The estimated birth prevalence of hypospadias in the United States increased from 6.1 to 6.8 per 1000 births from 1997 to 2012. Known hypospadias risk factors of SGA birth, multiple gestation birth, and premature birth also increased over this time to a higher degree. About 20% of males born with hypospadias had one of these risk factors. The birth prevalence of hypospadias in males without any studied risk factors also increased, but this was not statistically significant. More studies are needed to evaluate whether this increase in hypospadias prevalence is due to increases in known hypospadias risk factors, new environmental exposures, improved diagnosis at birth, some combination, or unrelated causes.

Abstract
Objective: The therapeutic effect of acid fibroblast growth factor 1(FGF1) on rats with diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) was evaluated by using nano-liposomes combined with ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction technique (UTMD). Methods: The FGF1-loaded nano-liposomes were prepared by water-in-water emulsion method combined with lyophilization technique.TypeⅠdiabetes model was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ, 70 mg/kg) in 60 male SD rats.Sixteen weeks later, diabetic rats were randomly divided into: placebo group (saline treatment), FGF1 group, FGF1-loaded nano-liposomes group, and FGF1-loaded nano-liposomes plus UTMD group (n=15 each). After two weeks of intervention followed by 2 weeks intervention stop, all rats underwent cardiac catheterization, and the left ventricular end-systolic pressure (LVESP), left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) and the maximal increase/decrease rate of left ventricular pressure (LV±dp/dtmax) were measured. Then, the rats were sacrificed and myocardial tissue were obtained for Masson trichrome staining, TUNEL apoptotic staining and CD31 immunohistochemistry staining to quantify myocardial collagen fraction (CVF), cardiac myocyte apoptotic index and myocardial microvascular density (MVD). Results: (1)Scanning electron microscope results revealed good morphology and FGF1 encapsulation efficiency (84.3±2.8)% with high stability and dispensability of FGF1 loaded nano-liposomes.(2)The hemodynamic evaluation showed that LVESP, LV + dp/dt(max) and LV -dp/dt(max) were all significantly higher, while LVEDP was significantly lower in the FGF1-loaded nano-liposome+ UTMD group than in DCM group, FGF1 solution group, and FGF1 nano-liposome group(all P<0.05). (3)The Masson trichrome staining demonstrated that CVF was significantly higher in all DCM groups than in control group and was significantly lower in the FGF1-loaded nano-liposome+ UTMD group than in DCM group, FGF1 solution group, and FGF1 nano-liposome group (all P<0.05). (4)The CD31 immunohistochemical staining results showed that MVD was significantly lower in all DCM groups than in control group and was significantly higher in the FGF1-loaded nano-liposome+ UTMD group than in DCM group, FGF1 solution group, and FGF1 nano-liposome group (all P<0.05). (5)The TUNEL results showed that apoptotic index was significantly higher in all DCM groups than in control group and was significantly lower in the FGF1-loaded nano-liposome + UTMD group than in DCM group, FGF1 solution group, and FGF1 nano-liposome group (all P<0.05). Conclusion: FGF1 nano-liposomes combining with UTMD technique can significantly improve cardiac functions and attenuate myocardial CVF and apoptosis and enhance myocardial MVD in DCM rats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to investigate the correlation between the disc status in MRI and the different types of traumatic temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis. METHODS 51 consecutive patients (69 joints), diagnosed with traumatic TMJ ankylosis with a residual condyle (Types A2 and A3), were included in this study. All patients had pre-operative MRI, which was reviewed to determine the disc shape, length and position. The results were compared using the Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS There were 37 joints of Type A2 ankylosis and 32 joints of Type A3. All joints of Type A2 and 27 joints of Type A3 (84.4%) definitely had a discernible disc, while 5 joints of Type A3 had no discernible discs. Among the discernible discs, the lateral disc of Type A2 and the whole disc of Type A3 had severe deformity, while the medial disc of Type A2 had mild deformity. The mean (standard deviation) disc length was 10.88 (1.19) mm in Type A2, but 7.50 (0.82) mm in Type A3. There was a significant difference between Types A2 and A3 (p < 0.05). As for the disc position, the intermediate position was found in all joints. CONCLUSIONS There is a correlation between the disc status and the different types of traumatic TMJ ankylosis. Therefore, MRI examination is needed to help treatment planning and predict post-operative TMJ function.

Abstract
Lactobacilli kefiranofaciens M1 has shown novel immunomodulation and anti-allergy probiotic attributes in cell and animal models. An acute oral toxicity assessment of L. kefiranofaciens M1 was evaluated in Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats were randomly assigned to four groups (12 rats/sex/group): the low dose group was orally gavaged with L. kefiranofaciens M1 at 3.0×10(8)cfu/kg bw while the medium dose and high dose groups received 9.0×10(9)cfu/kg bw and 1.8×10(10)cfu/kg bw, respectively, for 28days. The control group received phosphate buffer saline. The body weights were measured weekly while blood samples were collected for haematology and serum biochemistry tests. Histopathology of the organs (heart, liver, kidney, adrenal glands, spleen, ovary, testis), and urinalysis were conducted on study termination. The body weight gain of the L. kefiranofaciens M1 and control groups were comparable during the administration period. Overall, L. kefiranofaciens M1 did not induce adverse effects on haematology, serum biochemistry, and urinalysis parameters. Gross and microscopic histopathology of the organs revealed no toxicity effect of L. kefiranofaciens M1. In conclusion, 1.8×10(10)cfu/kg bw of L. kefiranofaciens M1 was considered as the no-observed-adverse-effect-level (NOAEL), which was the highest dose tested in the present study.

Abstract
Ascites sometimes occurs as a result of technical complications of transplant surgery or other medical reasons, including hepatic, cardiac, or oncologic pathology. Renal vein stenosis after renal transplant resulting in transudative ascites is rare; thus there are few if any data on such cases. Stent implantation seems to be a safe and elective approach to treatment of this rare condition. We present the case of a 22-year-old woman in whom massive ascites developed 33 months after renal transplantation. After the analysis of the ascites fluid and exclusion of transplant artery stenosis, graft rejection, infection, portal hypertension, and other possible etiologies, the final diagnosis of graft renal vein stenosis with transudative ascites derived from the graft was made based on imaging studies, including Doppler ultrasonography and computed tomography. The patient underwent angiographic stent placement, and the ascites markedly improved after the procedure. Renal vein stenosis complicated with ascites after renal transplantation is highly unusual; the patient's response to angiographic stent placement was beneficial, with satisfactory resolution of the blockage and ascites.

Abstract
Hydrogen gas is one of the most promising renewable energy sources, and the final product of hydrogen combustion is nothing but water. However, it is still a big challenge to produce hydrogen and store it. Many studies have been conducted into produce hydrogen from water using photocatalysts. Z-scheme photocatalysis is a two-photocatalyst system that comprises a hydrogen catalyst and an oxygen catalyst to produce hydrogen and oxygen respectively. Compared to the one-step system, the two-step system can promote the efficiency of water splitting. In addition, formic acid (FA) is a convenient hydrogen-storage material and can be safely handled in aqueous solutions. Therefore, this study investigated the photocatalytic conversion of FA solution to hydrogen using visible light with several types of hydrogen catalysts (CdS/titanate nanotubes (TNTs), CdS/TiO2, Pt/CdS/TNTs) and WO3 as the oxygen catalyst. The results showed that the yield of hydrogen with CdS/TNTs + WO3 was much higher than with CdS/TiO2 + WO3. Moreover, coating the photocatalysts with metal could further promote the reaction. The optimal platinum loading was 0.01 wt%, and the hydrogen production achieved was 852.5 μmol · h(-1) with 20 vol% FA solution.

Abstract
Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens M1, isolated from and identified in Taiwanese milk kefir grain, has demonstrated immune-modulating activity. In the present study, we further investigated the effects of Lb. kefiranofaciens M1 on intestinal epithelial cells in vitro and on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in vivo. The possible mechanisms regarding the cytokine products and intestinal epithelial barrier restoration as well as the putative receptor for the protective effects of Lb. kefiranofaciens M1 were investigated. In vitro results indicated that Lb. kefiranofaciens M1 could strengthen the epithelial barrier function in vitro by increasing the transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and significantly upregulated the level of the chemokine CCL-20 at both the apical and basolateral sites. The in vivo effects of Lb. kefiranofaciens M1 on the regulation of intestinal physiology indicate that this strain could ameliorate DSS-induced colitis with a significant attenuation of the bleeding score and colon length shortening. Production of proinflammatory cytokines was decreased and that of the antiinflammatory cytokine IL-10 was increased in the DSS-treated mice given Lb. kefiranofaciens M1. The putative receptor for the protective effects of Lb. kefiranofaciens M1 was toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), which was involved in probiotic-induced cytokine production in vitro and in attenuation of the bleeding score and colon length shortening in vivo. In this study, the kefir lactobacillus Lb. kefiranofaciens M1 clearly demonstrated an anticolitis effect. Based on these results, Lb. kefiranofaciens M1 has the potential to be applied in fermented dairy products as an alternative therapy for intestinal disorders.

Abstract
In this study, C.I. Reactive Red 2 (RR2) was removed from aqueous solutions by chitin. Exactly how the RR2 concentration, chitin dosage, pH, and temperature affected adsorption of RR2 by chitin was then determined. After reaction for 120 min, the amount of 10 and 20 mg/L RR2 absorbed onto chitin was 5.7 and 7.5 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption percentage increased from 56 to 94% when the chitin dosage was increased from 1.5 to 2.5 g/L. Experimental results indicated that the pseudo-second-order model best represents adsorption kinetics. Adsorption of RR2 increased as the temperature increased; however, it decreased with an increased pH. Experimental results further demonstrated that the Freundlich model is superior to the Langmuir model in fitting experimental isotherms. The ΔH° and ΔS° were 16.34 kJ/mol and 152.10 J/mol K, respectively. ΔH° suggested that adsorption of RR2 onto chitin was via physisorption.

Abstract
Cetuximab, a monoclonal antibody targeting epidermal growth factor receptor, has proven to be efficient in the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. We made a prospective study of the efficacy and toxicities of cetuximab-combination first-line (FOLFOX4) versus second/third-line (FOLFIRI) chemotherapy in 98 KRAS wild-type patients who had metastatic colorectal cancer. Wild-type KRAS had been identified by direct sequencing. Associations between clinical response/progression-free survival/overall survival/toxicities and cetuximab-combination chemotherapy timing were evaluated. The overall response rate was significantly higher for first-line treatment than for second/third-line treatment (relative risk = 1.707, 95% confidence interval = 1.121-2.598). Both progression-free survival and overall survival indicated significantly longer survival of first-line treatment than second/third-line treatment patients. This study is a validation of a molecular analysis of KRAS wild-type status for the prediction of response to cetuximab-combination chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer patients; its predictive role was less prominent in the second/third-line than in the first-line treatment patients.

Identification of a novel HLA-DQB1 allele, DQB1*0326, in a College of American Pathologists 2009 survey specimen. Int J Immunogenet 2011; 37:455-7. [PMID: 20618518 DOI: 10.1111/j.1744-313x.2010.00947.x] [Citation(s) in RCA: 4] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/27/2022]
Abstract
We identified a novel DQB1*0326 allele from a proficiency test sample provided by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) medical society. This novel DQB1 allele was unexpectedly discovered by sequence-based typing method in an attempt to resolve a discrepant typing result between the CAP survey report and our laboratory report. This novel DQB1 allele is most similar to DQB1*030302 and DQB1*0311. DQB1*0326 has a nucleotide substitution resulting an amino acid change when compared with DQB1*030302 (M to L) and it differs from DQB1*0311 by one nucleotide variation causing an amino acid replacement (A to D).
