Abstract
OBJECTIVE Reminiscence therapy is a psychological intervention which is specifically designed to address issues of particular relevance to older adults, such as depression. The latest approach to the research on therapeutic utility of reminiscence is gaining popularity among researchers and practitioners, and has yielded promising results. Specifying different types of reminiscence is a crucial component of the approach. The aim of this study was to examine the therapeutic effectiveness of integrative and instrumental types of reminiscence for the treatment of depression in institutionalized older adults dwelling in a nursing home. METHOD The study employed a three-group pre-post-test design with random allocation to instrumental or integrative reminiscence or an active social discussion control condition. Twenty-nine institutionalized older adults (12 men and 17 women) with depressive symptoms varying from mild to severe constituted the sample. The interventions were implemented in a short-form group format. FINDINGS Analysis of changes from pre-test to post-test revealed that integrative reminiscence therapy led to statistically significant reduction in symptoms of depression in contrast with the control group. Although instrumental reminiscence therapy also reduced depressive symptoms, this improvement was not statistically significant compared to the control group. CONCLUSION This study provides additional support for the effectiveness of integrative reminiscence therapy as an intervention for depressed older adults living in residential care settings. This study also provides support for the hypothesis that certain types of reminiscence produce their own specific effects.

Abstract
The quality changes of farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) stored in ice for a period of up to 20 (0, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20) d were determined by chemical (total volatile basic nitrogen [TVB-N], free fatty acid (FFA), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), peroxide value (PV), heme iron), microbiological (total viable counts, TVC), and sensory methods. The TVB-N level showed fluctuations during storage, indicating that TVB-N could not be a good indicator of rainbow trout quality. The TBA values remained low and were found to fluctuate during storage. The PV values and the release of FFA increased (P<0.05), while heme iron content decreased during storage. The total viable counts of rainbow trout increased (P<0.05) from the initial value of 4.0 log CFU/g (day 0) to 7.04 log CFU/g (day 20) over the period of storage. This study showed that sensory analysis of rainbow trout correlated well with the microbiological analysis. The results of this study according to microbiological and sensorial data indicated that the shelf life of rainbow trout stored in ice was approximately 9 to 11 d.

Abstract
Chronic arsenic exposure has been linked to many health problems including diabetes and cancer. In the present study, we assessed the protective effect of ellagic acid (EA) against toxicity induced by arsenic in isolated rat liver mitochondria. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitochondrial membrane potential decline were assayed using dichlorofluorescein diacetate and rhodamine 123, respectively, and dehydrogenase activity obtained by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide conversion assay. Arsenic increased ROS levels and mitochondrial dysfunction, which led to a reduction in mitochondrial total dehydrogenase activity. Mitochondria pretreated with EA exposed to arsenic at various concentrations led to a reversal of ROS production and mitochondrial damage. Our results showed that mitochondria were significantly affected when exposed to arsenic, which resulted in excessive ROS production and mitochondrial membrane disruption. Pretreatment with EA, reduced ROS amounts, mitochondrial damage, and restored total dehydrogenase activity specifically associated with mitochondrial complex II. EA protective characteristics may be accomplished particularly throughout the mitochondrial maintenance either directly by its antioxidant property or indirectly through its maintaining of complex II. These findings also suggest a potential role for EA in treating or preventing mitochondria associated disorders.

Abstract
The effects of different levels of micronized insoluble fiber (MIF) on broiler performance and litter moisture were assessed in 320 one-day-old male broilers (Ross 308). Feed was supplemented with 0, 0.3, 0.4, or 0.5% MIF during both the starter (1 to 14 d) and grower (15 to 42 d) periods. Supplementation of MIF was associated with dose dependent increases in daily BW gain and feed conversion ratio throughout the experimental period (P < 0.01), whereas feed intake was not influenced by MIF concentration. As MIF content increased, the relative weight of digestive organs was not changed (P > 0.05). Supplementation of MIF resulted in dose dependent increases in the ileal villus height:crypt depth ratio and number of goblet cells (P < 0.05), and a dose dependent decrease in litter moisture beginning during the third week (P < 0.01). These findings indicate that inclusion of 0.5% MIF in feed resulted in the greatest improvements in broiler performance, intestinal morphology, and litter moisture.

Abstract
1. Particle size reductions of fibre-rich materials alter structure, functional and digestive properties. To determine the effects of using fibre as an additive in Japanese quail rations on performance and gut physiology, a trial using micronised wheat fibre (MWF) at levels of 0.0, 5, 10 and 15 g/kg in feed was conducted. 2. Growth rate and feed efficiency were significantly improved when diets contained MWF while feed intake was not affected by levels of the fibre. As MWF content increased, the relative weight of gizzard and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) significantly increased whereas liver relative weight significantly decreased. 3. MWF inclusion significantly increased relative length of gut segments, villi height, villus thickness, the villi height to crypt depth proportion in jejunum and ileum and the number of goblet cells in different parts of intestine. 4. Tibia weight, length and ash content were increased linearly with rising MWF inclusion. Litter moisture was affected by MWF inclusions in a quadratic manner. The colony forming unit (CFU/g) of Streptococci spp. in ileal digesta was decreased with increasing MWF inclusion levels in the diet. 5. In conclusion, MWF can be used as a feed additive in quail diets and its inclusion in feed resulted in better performance, beneficial changes in intestinal microbial counts and improvements in small intestine morphology.

Abstract
The main objectives of study were to monitor the metals concentrations, in freshwater fish species, Carassius gibelio and Esox lucius; and to identify any relationships between species and bioaccumulation of metals. The highest concentration of metals (cadmium, 1.96; copper, 24.2; zinc, 49.6; lead, 5.4; chromium, 4.4) between the fish species and tissues was in the liver of Esox lucius, while the lowest (cadmium,0.21; copper,7.2; zinc,19.4; lead,0.9; chromium,0.6 μg/g) found in the muscle of Carassius gibelio. Results showed that the metal concentrations were in fishes in descending order of zinc > copper > lead > chromium > cadmium, similarly in the tissue liver > kidney > gill ~ intestine > muscle.

Abstract
In this research two types of electrochemical reactors for the treatment of simulated wastewaters containing Direct blue 71 azo dye (DB71) were used: (1) Laboratory scale undivided electrolysis cell system (450 mL volume) with one 2 cm x 2 cm platinum plate as the anode placed in the middle of the cell and two 2 cm x 8 cm steel plates (SS-304) as cathodes placed in the sides of the cell 2 cm from the central anode. (2) Pilot scale reactor (9L volume), equipped with two 3 cm x 23 cm stainless steel plates as anode and cathode, with distance of 3 cm apart. The influence of supporting electrolyte, applied voltage and pH were studied. The UV-vis spectra of samples during the electrochemical oxidation showed the rapid decolorization of the dye solution. During the process, the COD and current were measured in order to evaluate the degree of mineralization, energy consumption, current and anode efficiencies. The optimum supporting electrolyte and applied voltage were NaCl (5 g L(-1)) and 15 V. Using the lab scale reactor resulted in complete decolorization and mineralization of the dye solutions after ca. 90 and 120 min, respectively. Similar results were obtained using the pilot plant reactor under the same conditions. The good fit of the data to pseudo-first-order kinetics for COD removal at all applied voltages (except 20 V) was taken as proof of the involvement of indirect oxidation pathways in the process.

Abstract
The conflicting results of several studies suggest that there is an association between the butyrylcholinesterase-K variant (BCHE-K, G1615A/Ala539Thr) and the risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD) in diabetes and non-diabetic subjects. The objective of this study was to determine whether the presence of the BCHE-K variant exacerbates the risk of CAD in patients from western Iran with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This case-control study comprised 464 subjects undergoing their first coronary angiography. They were matched and randomly assigned into four groups: CAD+T2DM+ (CAD/T2DM), CAD+DM(-) (CAD/ND), CAD(-)DM+ (T2DM/NCAD) and CAD(-)DM(-)(control). The BCHE-K variant was detected by PCR-RFLP. The BCHE-K allele frequency in CAD patients with and without T2DM [total CAD (TCAD)] and separately for each group (CAD/T2DM and CAD/ND) was significantly higher than in the control group (21.1 % versus 13.3 % (p = 0.001), 22.4 % versus 13.3 % (p = 0.001) and 19.7 % versus 13.3 % (p = 0.015), respectively). The odds ratios (ORs) for the BCHE-K heterozygous and homozygous variants in TCAD subjects were 1.65 (95 % CI 1.17-2.3; p = 0.004) and 4.3 (1.05-19.4; p = 0.048); for CAD/T2DM individuals 1.76 (1.2-2.6; p = 0.004) and 4.73 (0.96-23.3; p = 0.052); and for CAD/ND patients 1.53 (1.05-2.3; p = 0.029) and 3.88 (0.8-19.7; p = 0.7), respectively. The OR of the BCHE-K allele was found to be 1.74 (1.1-2.4; p = 0.001) in TCAD subjects, 1.87 (1.12-1.48; p = 0.001) in the CAD/T2DM group and 1.59 (1.04-1.4; p = 0.016) in CAD/ND subjects. These data suggest that the BCHE-K allele increases the risk of CAD in the population (with and without DM) in western parts of Iran, and its presence intensifies the risk of CAD in T2DM. The fact that the BCHE-K allele, even in the heterozygous form, exacerbates the risk of CAD in this population, suggests that a specific therapeutic intervention should be considered for this particular group of patients.

Abstract
Glyoxal is a physiological metabolite formed by lipid peroxidation, ascorbate autoxidation, oxidative degradation of glucose, and degradation of glycated proteins. Glyoxal has been linked to oxidative stress and can cause a number of cellular damages, including covalent modification of amino and thiol groups of proteins to form advanced glycation end products. However, the mechanism of glyoxal toxicity has not been fully understood. In this study, we have focused on glyoxal toxicity in isolated rat liver mitochondria. Isolated mitochondria (0.5 mg protein per milliliter) were prepared from the Wistar rat liver using differential centrifugation and incubated with various concentrations of glyoxal (1, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 mM) for 30 min. The activity of mitochondrial complex II was determined by measurement of MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) conversion. The mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), lipid peroxidation (MDA), reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, glutathione (GSH) content, and protein carbonylation were also assessed. After an incubation of isolated liver mitochondria with glyoxal, disrupted electron transport chain, increased mitochondrial ROS formation, lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial membrane damage, GSH oxidation, and protein carbonylation ensued as compared to the control group ( p < 0.05). Glyoxal toxicity in isolated rat liver mitochondria was dose-dependent. In conclusion, glyoxal impaired the electron transport chain, which is the cause of increased ROS and MDA production, depletion of GSH, and disruption of MMP. Mitotoxicity of glyoxal might be related to the pathomechanisms involved in diabetes and its complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hypertension disorders are associated with higher rates of maternal, fetal, and infant mortality, and severe morbidity, especially in cases of severe preeclampsia, eclampsia, and HELLP syndrome. The aim of the study was to determine maternal outcomes in pregnant women with severe preeclampsia. DATA SOURCE The data source consisted of 349 cases with severe preeclampsia. DESIGN A cross-sectional study was undertaken on 349 cases of severe preeclampsia in pregnancy. SETTING/PERIOD The patients selected for this study were from those who presented at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology during 2007-2009. MATERIALS AND METHODS Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 16 software and conducting Chi square and independent sample t tests. Demographic data involving age, parity, gestational age, clinical, and laboratory findings were recorded from the medical files. In addition, delivery route, indications of cesarean delivery, and maternal complications were determined. RESULTS Of the 349 severely preeclampsia cases, among the 22 cases (6.3 %) who had suffered from eclamptic seizers, 17 cases (77.3 %) were in the age group of 18-35 years (P = 0.351) and 13 cases (59.1 %) in the gestational age group of 28-37 weeks (P = 0.112). One case (0.3 %) was demonstrated to have HELLP syndrome. Placental abruption was obstetric complication in 7.7 % (27 cases). Delivery route was vaginal in 120 cases (34.4 %), while 229 cases (65.6 %) underwent cesarean delivery. The most frequent maternal complication (37 cases) reported was coagulopathy (10.6 %). CONCLUSIONS We concluded that severe preeclampsia and eclampsia are associated with higher rates of maternal severe morbidity and that these two factors still remain the major contributors to maternal morbidity in Iran.
