Efficient Propylene Carbonate Synthesis from Urea and Propylene Glycol over Calcium Oxide-Magnesium Oxide Catalysts

A series of calcium oxide-magnesium oxide (CaO-MgO) catalysts were prepared under the effects of different precipitating agents and using varied Mg/Ca ratios. The physiochemical characteristics of the prepared catalysts were analyzed using XRD, FE-SEM, BET, FTIR, and TG/DTA techniques. Quantification of basic active sites present on the surface of the CaO-MgO catalysts was carried out using the Hammett indicator method. The as-prepared mixed oxide samples were tested for propylene carbonate (PC) synthesis through the alcoholysis of urea with propylene glycol (PG). The effects of the catalyst composition, catalyst dose, reaction temperature, and contact time on the PC yield and selectivity were investigated. The maximum PC yield of 96%, with high PC selectivity of 99% and a urea conversion rate of 96%, was attained at 160 °C using CaO-MgO catalysts prepared using a Mg/Ca ratio of 1 and Na₂CO₃ as a precipitating agent. The best-performing catalysts also exhibited good reusability without any significant loss in PC selectivity. It is expected that the present study will provide useful information on the suitability of different precipitating agents with respect to the catalytic properties of the oxides of Ca and Mg and their application in the synthesis of organic carbonates.

Developing Benign Ni/g-C3N4 Catalysts for CO2 Hydrogenation: Activity and Toxicity Study

This research discusses the CO₂ valorization via hydrogenation over the non-noble metal clusters of Ni and Cu supported on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄). The Ni and Cu catalysts were characterized by conventional techniques including XRD, AFM, ATR, Raman imaging, and TPR and were tested via the hydrogenation of CO₂ at 1 bar. The transition-metal-based catalyst designed with atom-economy principles presents stable activity and good conversions for the studied processes. At 1 bar, the rise in operating temperature during CO₂ hydrogenation increases the CO₂ conversion and the selectivity for CO and decreases the selectivity for methanol on Cu/CN catalysts. For the Ni/CN catalyst, the selectivity to light hydrocarbons, such as CH₄, also increased with rising temperature. At 623 K, the conversion attained ca. 20%, with CH₄ being the primary product of the reaction (CH₄ yield >80%). Above 700 K, the Ni/CN activity increases, reaching almost equilibrium values, although the Ni loading in Ni/CN is lower by more than 90% compared to the reference NiREF catalyst. The presented data offer a better understanding of the effect of the transition metals’ small metal cluster and their coordination and stabilization within g-C₃N₄, contributing to the rational hybrid catalyst design with a less-toxic impact on the environment and health. Bare g-C₃N₄ is shown as a good support candidate for atom-economy-designed catalysts for hydrogenation application. In addition, cytotoxicity to the keratinocyte human HaCaT cell line revealed that low concentrations of catalysts particles (to 6.25 μg mL^–1) did not cause degenerative changes.

Gum Acacia-Crosslinked-Poly(Acrylamide) Hydrogel Supported C3N4/BiOI Heterostructure for Remediation of Noxious Crystal Violet Dye

Herein, we report the designing of a C₃N₄/BiOI heterostructure that is supported on gum acacia-crosslinked-poly(acrylamide) hydrogel to fabricate a novel nanocomposite hydrogel. The potential application of the obtained nanocomposite hydrogel to remediate crystal violet dye (CVD) in an aqueous solution was explored. The structural and functional analysis of the nanocomposite hydrogel was performed by FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The different reaction parameters, such as CVD concentration, nanocomposite hydrogel dosage, and working pH, were optimized. The C₃N₄/BiOI heterostructure of the nanocomposite hydrogel depicts Z-scheme as the potential photocatalytic mechanism for the photodegradation of CVD. The degradation of CVD was also specified in terms of COD and HR-MS analysis was carried to demonstrate the major degradation pathways.

Sustainable approaches for nickel removal from wastewater using bacterial biomass and nanocomposite adsorbents: A review

In this article, the nickel (Ni²⁺) ions removal from the wastewater is reviewed. Adsorption is widely used to remove Ni²⁺ ions from waters and wastewaters. The usage of biomass is becoming more common for Ni²⁺ ions removal, while the commercial activated carbon from different agriculture wastes is preferred as an adsorbent for Ni²⁺ ion removal. The present review aimed to organise the available information regarding sustainable approaches for Ni²⁺ ions removal from water and wastewaters. These include adsorption by nanoparticles, bacterial biomass, and activated carbon from agriculture wastes, since they are the most common used for the Ni²⁺ ions removal. The bacterial and agricultural waste adsorbents exhibited high efficiency with a renewable source of biomass for Ni²⁺ ion removal. The biosorption capacity of the Ni²⁺ ions by the bacterial biomass range from 5.7 to 556 mg/g, while ranging from 5.8 to 150 mg/g by the activated carbon from different organic materials. The biosorption capacity of the nanocomposite adsorbents might reach to 400 mg/g. It appeared that the elimination of nickel ions need a selective biomass adsorbent such as the tolerant bacterial cells biomass which acts as a store for Ni²⁺ ion accumulations as a results for the active and passive transportation of the Ni²⁺ ions through the bacterial cell membrane.

Fabrication of biochar-based hybrid Ag nanocomposite from algal biomass waste for toxic dye-laden wastewater treatment

Dual functional innovative approaches were developed to tackle the algal scum problem in water by utilizing the algal (Spirogyra sp.) biomass waste for organic dye-laden industrial wastewater treatment, a global problem, and challenge. Therefore, an algal biochar-based nanocomposite (nAgBC) was synthesized and employed as a low-cost adsorbent for Congo red (CR) removal. Surface morphology, physicochemical characteristics, elemental composition, phase, and stability of the nanocomposite was analyzed using BET, FESEM-EDX, FTIR, XRD, XPS, and TGA. The nanocomposite was found to be thermostable, mesoporous with large and heterogeneous surface area, containing nAg as doped material, where -OH, NH, CO, CC, SO, and CH are the surface binding active functional groups. Maximum adsorption efficiency of 95.92% (18 mg L^-1 CR) was achieved (qe = 34.53 mg g^-1) with 0.5 g L^-1 of nanocomposite after 60 min, at room temperature (300 K) at pH 6. Isotherm and kinetic model suggested multilayer chemisorption, where adsorption thermodynamics indicated spontaneous reaction. Fluorescens spectral analysis of CR confirmed the formation of CR supramolecule, supporting enhanced adsorption. Furthermore, the result suggested a 5th cycle reusability and considerable efficacy towards real textile industrial effluents. Synergistic effects of the active surface functional groups of the biochar and nAg, along with the overall surface charge of the composite lead to chemisorption, electrostatic attraction, H-bonding, and surface complexation with CR molecules. Thus, synthesized nAgBC can be applicable to mitigate the wastewater for cleaner production and environment.

A comprehensive review on the removal of noxious pollutants using carrageenan based advanced adsorbents

Rapid industrial development is associated with high discharge of toxic pollutants into the environment. The industries discharge their wastewater containing organic pollutants directly into the water system without treating them that has posed many serious threats to environmental protection. The use of bioadsorbents for the removal of such toxic pollutants from the waste water due to its simple synthesis, easy operation, effectiveness, and economic viability have emerged a new dimension in the wastewater treatment approaches. Various adsorbents have been prepared to examine their adsorption capacity against different adsorbates, but, to attain sustainability, biocompatibility, and biodegradation, bio-adsorbents have been found to won the battle. Seaweed derived polysaccharide; Carrageenan (CR) has been proven to be an excellent adsorbent for the wastewater treatment. It has been successfully modified with various components to form CR based-magnetic composites, hydrogels, nanoparticle modified CR composites and many others to enrich and diversify its properties. In this review, we have explained the adsorption behaviour of various carrageenan based adsorbents for the removal of different dyes. The influence of various parameters such as the effect of initial concentration, adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH, temperature, and ion concentration on dye adsorption is well explained. This paper also summarizes the structure, morphology, swelling ability, and thermal stability of carrageenan. The data also expounds on the adsorption capacity, kinetic model, isotherm model, and nature of the adsorption process. Different types of solvents are used for the regeneration and reusability of carrageenan adsorbents and their regeneration studies and desorption efficiency is well-explained. The adsorption mechanism of dyes onto carrageenan based adsorbents has been well described in this review. This review provides a deep insight about the use of carrageenan based adsorbents for the wastewater treatment.

Defluoridation using hydroxyapatite implanted lanthanum organic framework-based bio-hybrid beads

The present study reports on biopolymer based material namely HAp–La-BTC MOFs@Alg–CS hybrid beads were developed and it was potentially employed for fluoride removal.

Fabrication and Characterization of Xanthan Gum-cl-poly(acrylamide-co-alginic acid) Hydrogel for Adsorption of Cadmium Ions from Aqueous Medium

The present research demonstrates the facile fabrication of xanthan gum-cl-poly(acrylamide-co-alginic acid) (XG-cl-poly(AAm-co-AA)) hydrogel by employing microwave-assisted copolymerization. Simultaneous copolymerization of acrylamide (AAm) and alginic acid (AA) onto xanthan gum (XG) was carried out. Different samples were fabricated by changing the concentrations of AAm and AA. A sample with maximum swelling percentage was chosen for adsorption experiments. The structural and functional characteristics of synthesized hydrogel were elucidated using diverse characterization tools. Adsorption performance of XG-cl-poly(AAm-co-AA) hydrogel was investigated for the removal of noxious cadmium (Cd(II)) ions using batch adsorption from the aqueous system, various reaction parameters optimized include pH, contact time, temperature, and concentration of Cd(II) ions and temperature. The maximum adsorption was achieved at optimal pH 7, contact time 180 min, temperature 35 °C and cadmium ion centration of 10 mg·L-1. The XG-cl-poly(AAm-co-AA) hydrogel unveiled a very high adsorption potential, and its adsorption capacities considered based on the Langmuir isotherm for Cd(II) ions was 125 mg·g-1 at 35 °C. The Cd(II) ions adsorption data fitted nicely to the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-first-order model. The reusability investigation demonstrated that hydrogel retained its adsorption capacity even after several uses without significant loss.

Green approach and strategies for wastewater treatment using bioelectrochemical systems: A critical review of fundamental concepts, applications, mechanism, and future trends

Millions of litters of multifarious wastewater are directly disposed into the environment annually to reduce the processing costs leading to eutrophication and destroying the clean water sources. The bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have recently received significant attention from researchers due to their ability to convert waste into energy and their high efficiency of wastewater treatment. However, most of the performed researches of the BESs have focused on energy generation, which created a literature gap on the utilization of BESs for wastewater treatment. The review highlights this gap from various aspects, including the BESs trends, fundamentals, applications, and mechanisms. A different review approach has followed in the present work using a bibliometric review (BR) which defined the literature gap of BESs publications in the degradation process section and linked the systematic review (SR) with it to prove and review the finding systematically. The degradation mechanisms of the BESs have been illustrated comprehensively in the current work, and various suggestions have been provided for supporting future studies and cooperation.

Environmental Remediation Potential of Ferrous Sulfate Waste as an Eco-Friendly Coagulant for the Removal of NH3-N and COD from the Rubber Processing Effluent

The present study was conducted to determine the potential of utilizing the FeSO₄·7H₂O waste from the titanium manufacturing industry as an effective coagulant for treating industrial effluent. In this study, the secondary rubber processing effluent (SRPE) was treated using ferrous sulfate (FeSO₄·7H₂O) waste from the titanium oxide manufacturing industry. The FeSO₄·7H₂O waste coagulation efficiency was evaluated on the elimination of ammoniacal nitrogen (NH₃-N) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from SRPE. The central composite design (CCD) of experiments was employed to design the coagulation experiments with varying coagulation time, coagulant doses, and temperature. The coagulation experiments were optimized on the optimal elimination of NH₃-N and COD using response surface methodology (RSM). Results showed that coagulant doses and temperature significantly influenced NH₃-N and COD elimination from SRPE. The highest NH₃-N and COD removal obtained were 98.19% and 93.86%, respectively, at the optimized coagulation experimental conditions of coagulation time 70 min, coagulant doses 900 mg/L, and temperature 62 °C. The residual NH₃-N and COD in treated SPRE were found below the specified industrial effluent discharge limits set by DoE, Malaysia. Additionally, the sludge generated after coagulation of SRPE contains essential plant nutrients. The present study's finding showed that FeSO₄·7H₂O waste generated as an industrial byproduct in a titanium oxide manufacturing industry could be utilized as an eco-friendly coagulant in treating industrial effluent.

Polyvinyl Alcohol Polymer Functionalized Graphene Oxide Decorated with Gadolinium Oxide for Sequestration of Radionuclides from Aqueous Medium: Characterization, Mechanism, and Environmental Feasibility Studies

Uranium (U(VI)) and thorium (Th(IV)) ions produced by the nuclear and mining industries cause water pollution, thereby harming the environment and human health. In this study, gadolinium oxide-decorated polyvinyl alcohol-graphene oxide composite (PGO-Gd) was developed using a simple hydrothermal process to treat U(VI) and Th(IV) ions in water. The developed material was structurally characterized by highly advanced spectroscopy and microscopy techniques. The effects of pH, equilibration time and temperature on both radionuclides (U(VI) and Th(IV)) adsorption by PGO-Gd were examined. The PGO-Gd composite adsorbed both metal ions satisfactorily, with adsorption capacities of 427.50 and 455.0 mg g-1 at pH 4.0, respectively. The adsorption properties of both metal ions were found to be compatible with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Additionally, based on the thermodynamic characteristics, the adsorption was endothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, the environmental viability of PGO-Gd and its application was demonstrated by studying its reusability in treating spiked surface water. PGO-Gd shows promise as an adsorbent in effectively removing both radionuclides from aqueous solutions.

Covalent Organic Frameworks: Synthesis, Properties and Applications-An Overview

Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are an exciting new class of microporous polymers with unprecedented properties in organic material chemistry. They are generally built from rigid, geometrically defined organic building blocks resulting in robust, covalently bonded crystalline networks that extend in two or three dimensions. By strategically combining monomers with specific structures and properties, synthesized COF materials can be fine-tuned and controlled at the atomic level, with unparalleled precision on intrapore chemical environment; moreover, the unusually high pore accessibility allows for easy post-synthetic pore wall modification after the COF is synthesized. Overall, COFs combine high, permanent porosity and surface area with high thermal and chemical stability, crystallinity and customizability, making them ideal candidates for a myriad of promising new solutions in a vast number of scientific fields, with widely varying applications such as gas adsorption and storage, pollutant removal, degradation and separation, advanced filtration, heterogeneous catalysis, chemical sensing, biomedical applications, energy storage and production and a vast array of optoelectronic solutions. This review attempts to give a brief insight on COF history, the overall strategies and techniques for rational COF synthesis and post-synthetic functionalization, as well as a glance at the exponentially growing field of COF research, summarizing their main properties and introducing the numerous technological and industrial state of the art applications, with noteworthy examples found in the literature.

Fabrication of Highly Porous Polymeric Nanocomposite for the Removal of Radioactive U(VI) and Eu(III) Ions from Aqueous Solution

In the present study, a polymeric nanocomposite, CoFe2O4@DHBF, was fabricated using 2,4 dihydroxybenzaldehyde and formaldehyde in basic medium with CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. The fabricated nanocomposite was characterized using FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS analyses. The analytical results revealed that the magnetic nanocomposite was fabricated successfully with high surface area 370.24 m2/g. The fabricated CoFe2O4@DHBF was used as an efficient adsorbent for the adsorption of U(VI) and Eu(III) ions from contaminated water. pH, initial concentration, adsorption time, and the temperature of the contaminated water solution affecting the adsorption ability of the nanocomposites were studied. The batch adsorption results exposed that the adsorption capacity for the removal of U(VI) and Eu(III) was found to be 237.5 and 225.5 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics support that both the metal ions follow second order adsorption kinetics. The adsorption isotherm well fits with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the correlation coefficient (R2) values were found to be 0.9920 and 0.9913 for the adsorption of U(VI) and Eu(III), respectively. It was noticed that the fabricated nanocomposites show excellent regeneration ability and about 220.1 and 211.3 mg/g adsorption capacity remains with U(VI) and Eu(III) under optimum conditions.

Nanoparticles: Antimicrobial Applications and Its Prospects

Nowadays, nanomaterials [NPs; size, 1–100 nm] have emerged as unique antimicrobial agents. Specially, several classes of antimicrobial NPs and nanosized carriers for antibiotic delivery have proven their efficacy for handling infectious diseases, including antibiotic-resistant ones, in vitro as well as in animal models, which can offer better therapy than classical drugs due to their high surface area-to-volume ratio, resulting in appearance of new mechanical, chemical, electrical, optical, magnetic, electro-optical, and magneto-optical properties, unlike from their bulk properties. Thus, scientifically NPs have been validated to be fascinating in fighting bacteria. In this chapter, we will discuss precise properties of microorganisms and their modifications among each strain specifically. The toxicity mechanisms vary from one stain to another. Even the NP’s efficacy to treat against bacteria and drug-resistant bacteria and their defense mechanisms change according to strains in particular composition of cell walls, the enzymic composition, and so on. Thus, we provide an outlook on NPs in the microbial world and mechanism to overcome the drug resistance by tagging antibiotics in NPs and its future prospects for the scientific world.

The position of intellectual capital among Saudi banks

All intangible assets and various human-centred and the intellectual property rights (IPR) of organizations are considered as Intellectual Capital (IC). It includes all nonmonetary and nonphysical resources that are fully or partially controlled by the organization and contribute to the organization`s value creation. Since conventional factors of production are increasingly being replaced by intellectual assets, IC is now being increasingly recognized as the most valuable resource, which can provide the required impetus to take on the competition. Through appropriate management of IC, it is possible to enhance the earning capability, sustain the value and help the achievement of organizational goals. Organisations that manage IC would acquire the required competitive advantage and superior business performance in the current volatile and uncertain market. This study was conducted to investigate the position of IC of Saudi banks. Empirical evidence exists to suggest that efficient utilization of IC can contribute towards the success of the banking industry. Objectives of the study included finding the value of IC of the Saudi banking industry and examine the performance of Islamic banks. Two regression models were used to achieve the objectives of the study. The models examined the relationships between Return on equity (ROE) and Return on total assets (ROA) and the aggregate measure of IC. It also examined the different components like Human capital efficiency (HCE), the Capital employed efficiency (CEE), and Structural capital efficiency (SCE). The present study has thus helped in presenting some interesting findings of the IC of Saudi banks. It was observed that Saudi banks are fairly efficient and has generated the required value from the component of Human capital (HC) than other capital elements. Drastic improvement was evident during recent years, reflecting the cues about the stability evident globally in the industry. Overall it can be concluded that Saudi banks, especially the Shariah-compliant ones, are efficient in generating value from its IC. A comparison between Saudi banks, as well as Islamic banks and those in other countries where banking operations are not done as per Shari’ah rules, is suggested as it is sure to bring in interesting results. High current density cation-exchanged SnO2–CdSe/ZnSe and SnO2–CdSe/SnSe quantum-dot photoelectrochemical cells

The 9.74 mA cm⁻² current density of SnO₂–CdSe photoanode is enhanced to 19.82 and 28.40 mA cm⁻² on SnO₂–CdSe/ZnSe and SnO₂–CdSe/SnSe surface modifications, respectively, through a process of cation-exchange.
