Abstract
Objective.Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have the potential to reinstate lost communication faculties. Results from speech decoding studies indicate that a usable speech BCI based on activity in the sensorimotor cortex (SMC) can be achieved using subdurally implanted electrodes. However, the optimal characteristics for a successful speech implant are largely unknown. We address this topic in a high field blood oxygenation level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, by assessing the decodability of spoken words as a function of hemisphere, gyrus, sulcal depth, and position along the ventral/dorsal-axis.Approach.Twelve subjects conducted a 7T fMRI experiment in which they pronounced 6 different pseudo-words over 6 runs. We divided the SMC by hemisphere, gyrus, sulcal depth, and position along the ventral/dorsal axis. Classification was performed on in these SMC areas using multiclass support vector machine (SVM).Main results.Significant classification was possible from the SMC, but no preference for the left or right hemisphere, nor for the precentral or postcentral gyrus for optimal word classification was detected. Classification while using information from the cortical surface was slightly better than when using information from deep in the central sulcus and was highest within the ventral 50% of SMC. Confusion matrices where highly similar across the entire SMC. An SVM-searchlight analysis revealed significant classification in the superior temporal gyrus and left planum temporale in addition to the SMC.Significance.The current results support a unilateral implant using surface electrodes, covering the ventral 50% of the SMC. The added value of depth electrodes is unclear. We did not observe evidence for variations in the qualitative nature of information across SMC. The current results need to be confirmed in paralyzed patients performing attempted speech.

Abstract
Several neuroimaging studies have shown the somatotopy of body part representations in primary somatosensory cortex (S1), but the functional hierarchy of distinct subregions in human S1 has not been adequately addressed. The current study investigates the functional hierarchy of cyto-architectonically distinct regions, Brodmann areas BA3, BA1, and BA2, in human S1. During functional MRI experiments, we presented participants with vibrotactile stimulation of the fingertips at three different vibration frequencies. Using population Receptive Field (pRF) modeling of the fMRI BOLD activity, we identified the hand region in S1 and the somatotopy of the fingertips. For each voxel, the pRF center indicates the finger that most effectively drives the BOLD signal, and the pRF size measures the spatial somatic pooling of fingertips. We find a systematic relationship of pRF sizes from lower-order areas to higher-order areas. Specifically, we found that pRF sizes are smallest in BA3, increase slightly towards BA1, and are largest in BA2, paralleling the increase in visual receptive field size as one ascends the visual hierarchy. Additionally, we find that the time-to-peak of the hemodynamic response in BA3 is roughly 0.5 s earlier compared to BA1 and BA2, further supporting the notion of a functional hierarchy of subregions in S1. These results were obtained during stimulation of different mechanoreceptors, suggesting that different afferent fibers leading up to S1 feed into the same cortical hierarchy.

Abstract
AIM Language dominance is an important factor for clinical decision making in brain tumor surgery. Functional MRI can provide detailed information about the organization of language in the brain. One often used measure derived from fMRI data is the laterality index (LI). The LI is typically based on the ratio between left and right brain activity in a specific region associated with language. Nearly all fMRI language studies show language-related activity in both hemispheres, and as a result the LI shows a large range of values. The clinical significance of the variation in language laterality as measured with the LI is still under debate. In this study, we tested two hypotheses in relation to the LI, measured in Broca's region, and it's right hemisphere homologue: 1: the level of activity in Broca's and it's right hemisphere homologue is mirrored for subjects with an equal but opposite LI; 2: the whole brain language activation pattern differs between subjects with an equal but opposite LI. METHODS One hundred sixty-three glioma and meningioma patients performed a verb generation task as part of a standard clinical protocol. We calculated the LI in the pars orbitalis, pars triangularis and pars opercularis of the left inferior frontal gyrus, referred to as Broca's region from here on. In our database, 21 patients showed right lateralized activity, with a moderate average level (-0.32). A second group of 21 patients was selected from the remaining group, for equal but opposite LI (0.32). We compared the level and distribution of activity associated with language production in the left and right hemisphere in these two groups. RESULTS Patients with left sided laterality showed a significantly higher level of activity in Broca's region than the patients with right sided laterality. However, both groups showed no difference in level of activity in Broca's homologue region in the right hemisphere. Also, we did not see any difference in the pattern of activity between patients with left-sided and right-sided laterality, outside of the regions used to calculate the LI. CONCLUSION Our results indicate that an equal but opposite moderate LI is not associated with mirrored left and right hemisphere levels of activity in Broca's region and its right hemisphere homologue, nor in any other region of the brain. These results suggest that the LI as measured with fMRI should be interpreted with caution as a measure of organization of language in the brain. For moderate LI values based on Broca's region, it appears that variation in the LI value is predominantly a result of variation in the level of activity in the left hemisphere. Our results suggest that several factors may contribute to variation in the level of laterality, that may be unrelated to hemispheric dominance, such as task performance as well as efficiency of language processing, by affecting the level of activity in Broca's region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cerebral lateralisation appears to be decreased in schizophrenia. Results of studies investigating this, however, are equivocal. AIMS To review quantitatively the literature on decreased lateralisation in schizophrenia. METHOD Meta-analyses were conducted on 19 studies on handedness, 10 dichotic listening studies and 39 studies investigating anatomical asymmetry in schizophrenia. RESULTS The prevalence of mixed- and left-handedness ('non-right-handedness') was significantly higher in patients with schizophrenia as compared to healthy controls, and also as compared to psychiatric controls. The analysis of dichotic listening studies revealed no significant difference in lateralisation in schizophrenia. However, when analysis was restricted to studies using consonant-vowel or fused word tasks, significantly decreased lateralisation in schizophrenia emerged. Asymmetry of the planum temporale and the Sylvian fissure was significantly decreased in schizophrenia, while asymmetry of the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle was not. CONCLUSION Strong evidence is provided for decreased cerebral lateralisation in schizophrenia.

Abstract
Peptide hormones act to regulate apoptosis through activation of multiple pro- and anti-apoptotic signaling cascades of which lipid signaling events represent an important facet of the cellular rheostat that determines survival and death decisions. Activation of sphingomyelinase, which generates ceramide, is an intermediate in cellular stress responses and induction of apoptosis in many systems. Conversely, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) is a critical signaling molecule involved in regulating cell survival and proliferation pathways. In the present study, we investigate cross-talk between the PI3K and sphingomyelinase pathways as a mechanism for regulation of cell survival/death decisions. We show that phorbol ester, insulin-like growth factor 1, and a constitutively active PI3K suppress both tumor necrosis factor-induced apoptosis and ceramide generation. Conversely, inhibition of the PI3K pathway with expression of a kinase-dead PI3K both prevented survival signaling and enhanced tumor necrosis factor-induced ceramide generation. The ability of exogenous sphingomyelinase to induce ceramide generation was partially suppressed by expression of constitutively active PI3K and enhanced by inhibition of PI3K suggesting that cross-talk between PI3K and ceramide generation within cells is regulated subsequent to activation of sphingomyelinase.

Abstract
Relationships between I intake by lactating Holstein cows and iodine concentrations in milk and meat were investigated. Six treatment groups with seven cows assigned to each treatment were fed a basal diet containing .8 mg I/kg alone or supplemented with I at 1, 2, or 4 mg/kg in four 5-wk periods. Basal alone was fed in the first and third periods and the I supplement was potassium iodide in the second period and ethylenediamine dihydroiodide in the fourth period. Iodine concentrations in milk increased with each increase in dietary I from 205 ng/ml for basal periods to 404, 477, and 757 ng/ml when 1, 2, or 4 mg/kg I was fed as potassium iodide; and 467, 535, and 869 ng/ml when 1, 2, or 4 mg/kg I was fed as ethylenediamine dihydroiodide. Concentrations of I in skeletal muscle after the fourth period were not affected by 2 mg/kg I and only increased from 166 to 199 ng/g when supplemental I was 4 mg/kg. Moderate changes in dietary I are quickly reflected in milk I, but I in meat is relatively stable.

Abstract
Rates of increase in plasma Mg following rectal or oral administration of solutions containing 30 g MgCl2.6H2O were compared in 10 Holstein bull calves receiving wheat straw (.07% Mg) and concentrates (.04 or .24% Mg) fed separately for ad libitum consumption. Treatments were administered in a sequence, which involved each calf with all combinations of MgCl2.6H2O dosing routes and dietary Mg within a 6-wk period. Plasma Mg concentration averaged 1.95 mg/dl initially but fell below 1 mg/dl within 2 wk after supplemental Mg was omitted. Maximum increases in plasma Mg concentration following oral or rectal dosing were 16 or 47% when dietary Mg was adequate and 48 or 124% when Mg was deficient. Calves fed either diet responded maximally to rectal infusion within 10 min, but plasma Mg of deficient calves increased throughout 160 min after oral dosing. Plasma Mg of deficient calves responded quicker and reached higher concentrations after rectal infusion, but the response was sustained longer after oral administration.

Abstract
Blood platelet function and possible involvement in death of hypomagnesemic ruminants was investigated with 26 Angus cows, 15 mature Hampshire wethers, eight Finnish-Hampshire ewes, and 36 growing Dorset lambs. Hypomagnesemia was induced by feeding vegetative spring tall fescue to 13 cows and semipurified diets low in Mg to nine wethers, four ewes, and 18 lambs. In comparison with controls, dietary treatments reduced plasma Mg concentrations 55% in cows, 36% in wethers, 66% in ewes, and 78% in lambs. Hypomagnesemia reduced in vitro reactivity of cow and lamb platelets to thrombin, ADP, and platelet active collagen, but in vitro tests may not accurately reflect in vivo platelet reactivity. Microscopic examination of platelet-rich plasma revealed a threefold increase in clumped platelets from four hypomagnesemic ewes compared to four normomagnesemic ewes. This suggests that in vivo activation and exhaustion of platelets may have contributed to reduced in vitro platelet reactivity. Six of 18 hypomagnesemic lambs died spontaneously in tetany after 2-12 months on low-Mg diets. Heart and lung lesions were markedly similar to pathological changes induced in other lambs by intravascular activation of platelets with 500 micrograms of vascular collagen fibrils per kg body weight injected intravenously. These results suggest the possibility of abnormal blood platelet activation as a significant mortality risk factor in severe hypomagnesemia.

Abstract
Jersey cows were fed three alfalfa haylage-based diets with different cation-anion balances beginning 6 wk preceding third or later calving and ending 24 to 36 h postpartum. Sodium and Cl as percentages of dietary DM were .08 and 1.66 in diet 1 (anionic, 5 cows), .44 and .91 in diet 2 (intermediate, 6 cows), and 1.60 and .34 in diet 3 (cationic, 6 cows). Cation-anion balances were 22, 60, and 126 meq/100 g DM; Ca:P ratios averaged 4:1. Cows fed diet 1 in comparison with cows fed diets 2 or 3 over 6 wk had similar concentrations of Ca, P, and Na but higher concentrations of Mg and K in plasma and higher urinary excretions of Ca and Mg. Concentrations of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D 3 d before parturition were higher in cows fed diet 1 than in cows fed diets 2 or 3. Within 36 h after calving, mean concentrations of Ca in plasma (mg/dl, range) of cows fed diets 1 to 3, respectively, were 7 (8.7 to 6.2), 6.5 (7.8 to 3.9), and 6.3 (7.8 to 3.8). Number of cases of clinical milk fever by diet were 0 of 5, 2 of 6, and 1 of 6 cows. Alteration of dietary cation-anion balance by addition of Cl may effectively reduce incidence and severity of parturient hypocalcemia.

Abstract
Two trials were conducted with 36 Jersey cows each to compare intake, production response, and relative economics of four concentrate management systems. Cows were assigned for 25 wk to concentrate fed: 1) for ad libitum consumption twice daily for 10 min, 2) twice daily according to production, 3) via computer feeder according to production, or 4) as part of a total mixed ration. Concentrate was fed at the rate of 1 kg/3.5 kg 4% FCM for treatments 2 and 3 and at the same rate, but to group average FCM, for treatment 4. Concentrate allotments were updated weekly. Cows were individually fed blended corn silage and whole cotton-seed (84:16, DM basis) plus 2.2 kg alfalfa hay/d (Trial 2 only). Concentrate DM intake was 2.3 kg lower and forage DM intake 2.3 kg higher when cows were fed to production (treatments 2, 3, and 4). Milk production was highest in both trials for treatment 2. Fat test was lowest for twice daily ad libitum feeding with no differences found between other methods. Body weight change was similar across treatments and trials. Milk income was similar, fed costs higher, and income over feed cost lower for treatment 1 than for other methods in both trials. Three methods of feeding concentrate according to production were equally effective in maximizing profit.

Abstract
The dopamine hypothesis of opiate reward was directly tested by blocking dopamine receptor systems with haloperidol. Haloperidol was administered either systemically or locally into different brain areas with dopaminergic terminals in rats allowed to initiate and maintain intravenous heroin self-administration. Haloperidol treatment did not block heroin reward. It is concluded that dopamine is not critically involved in opiate reward and that multiple endogenous reward systems are present in the brain.

Abstract
Circulating platelets may be activated by exposed triple-helical collagen in atherosclerotic lesions in Mg-deficient ruminants. Autologous platelets, labeled in vitro with 111In and determined to be active, were injected into 5 hypomagnesemic and 3 control lambs fed semipurified diets with 100 or 2,000 mg of Mg/kg of feed for 3 months. During the first 68 hours, 111In concentrations were 11 times higher in packed cells than in plasma. Packed-cell 111In increased 60% during the first 2 hours, probably due to initial tissue sequestration and later release of labeled platelets. Thereafter, platelet half-life span averaged 60 and 63 hours for hypomagnesemic and control lambs. After 68 hours, lambs were injected with native vascular collagen fibrils at 500 micrograms/kg of body weight to initiate reversible platelet aggregation. Within 1 minute, 83% of packed-cell 111In disappeared from circulation. Thirty minutes later, the lambs were euthanatized and necropsied and in the lungs, liver, and spleen, 111In averaged 24%, 19%, and 9%, respectively, of 111In injected 68 hours earlier. Organ deposits were not affected by Mg intake, but 111In in the lungs was somewhat lower in 2 lambs injected with inactivated collagen. Pathologic changes induced by reversible platelet aggregation were compatible with right ventricular failure complicated by pulmonary edema, similar to changes in hypomagnesemic lambs that died spontaneously. Platelets in blood exposed to vascular lesions in hypomagnesemic ruminants could be a major mortality risk factor in grass tetany disease.

Abstract
The packaging of intracellular DNA into heads is a key feature in the morphogenesis of bacteriophage particles. In many phages a performed empty head precursor, the prohead, is filled with DNA from a concatemeric substrate consisting of tandemly repeated genome lengths. The addition of outer shell proteins completes head formation. The DNA molecules released from particles of the coliphage T1 exist as three major permutations of nucleotide sequence. Such limited permutation can be explained by the modification of Streisinger's 'headful' mechanism proposed for phage P22. DNA packaging is initiated at a specific site (the pac site) on the concatemeric precursor. While this site is cleaved, subsequent cleavages (headful cleavages) are dependent only on head-filling and are not defined in terms of nucleotide sequence. Headfuls of DNA, consisting of slightly more than a genome length, are packaged in three successive cycles of head-filling to produce the permuted and terminally redundant molecules characteristic of T1 DNA. To elucidate the regulation of this process, we have studied the DNA metabolism of T1 head mutants. We describe here the properties of a mutant in gene 13.3 which is defective for headful cleavage but remains proficient in pac site cleavage. The observation in this mutant that concatemers are degraded to unit-length molecules by repeated pac site cleavage suggests a model of headful packaging in which pac site initiation and processive head-filling compete for the DNA substrate.

Abstract
Cations and immunoreactive insulin in plasma were measured in 35 lactating cows moved abruptly to early spring pasture. After change of cows from grass-clover hay to fescue-bluegrass pasture containing 22 to 31 g potassium/kg dry matter, immunoreactive insulin of 5 Holstein cows increased 30% in 5 days and averaged 45% above prepasture concentrations for 40 days. Magnesium averaged 44% below prepasture content of plasma during this period and was correlated negatively with potassium -.17 and immunoreactive insulin -.37. Thirty Herford cows were changed from corn silage and grass-clover hay to wheat-rye pasture containing 3.06% potassium in the dry matter. Each day on pasture, 10 cows each were fed 2.3 kg cornmeal, 10 were given 30 g magnesium oxide by capsule, and 10 were given no supplement. After unsupplemented cows were moved to pasture, immunoreactive insulin rose 51% in 8 days and plasma magnesium fell 24%. Both supplements reduced immunoreactive insulin, but magnesium was maintained higher by magnesium oxide than by cornmeal. Injection of two Holstein cows with insulin (2 IU/kg body weight) reduced plasma concentrations of both potassium and magnesium 20% below that of two cows injected with only physiological saline. Whether elevated plasma insulin may accelerate development of hypomagnesemia in cattle on spring pasture with relatively high potassium content has not been established.

Abstract
Experiments were conducted to permit electrophysiological characterization of hypomagnesemia in sheep. For 6 weeks, adult wethers were fed: (1) a diet deficient in magnesium and calcium, (2) a diet deficient in magnesium, (3) a diet deficient in calcium and (4) a control diet. Weekly blood samples were collected to determine plasma concentrations of calcium (CA++), magnesium (Mg++) and potassium (K+). During the 6-week feeding period, electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction velocity (NCV) and strength-duration (S-D) determinations were conducted. At the end of a 6-week period, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples also were taken from the cisterna magna and analyzed for Ca++, Mg++ and K+. The control plasma Mg++ concentration was 2.2 mg/100 ml. There was a depression (P less than .05) in plasma Mg++ in sheep that were fed diets deficient in Mg++ or deficient in Mg++ or Ca++. Plasma Mg++ concentrations in these two groups were .79 and .95 mg/100 ml, respectively, by the last week of diet feeding. EMGs performed during magnesium depletion were normal. In hypomagnesemic sheep, neither motor unit potentials (MUP) resulting from induced voluntary movement nor muscle-evoked potentials (EP) resulting from motor nerve stimulation showed differences (P less than .05) from those in control animals. NCV and muscle excitability (as evaluated by S-D curves) were normal in all sheep. CSF Ca++, Mg++ and K+ were not altered (P less than .05) in sheep fed any of the four diets.
