Abstract
To circumvent the decreased pulmonary blood flow associated with closure of the ductus arteriosus in newborns with heart defects, we infiltrated buffered formalin solution into the wall of that structure to delay its closure. In four infants with pulmonary atresia in whom shunts had been unsuccessful or were technically not feasible, this procedure produced rapid improvement of arterial oxygen tension that was maintained in three infants for one to nine months. The other died of complications of attempted shunt procedures. In an infant with interrupted aortic arch and a large ventricular septal defect, formalin infiltration of the ductus and pulmonary arterial banding alleviated cardiac failure and improved lower-body perfusion. Formalin infiltration of the ductus is an effective palliative technic for treating certain congenital cardiac defects. No adverse effects have been noted.

Abstract
The effects of glucose and parathyroid hormone (PTH) on the transport and metabolism of myoinositol (MI) and [2-(3)H]MI were studied in isolated perfused dog kidneys. Studies during perfusion of kidneys with normal and elevated glucose concentrations demonstrated that under normal conditions the isolated kidney reabsorbed 94.7+/-0.2% of the filtered MI, and the renal production of (3)H-metabolities of MI was 117.9+/-6% of the filtered MI load. This indicated that entry of MI into tubular cells by reabsorption was not the sole pathway for entry into the pool of MI within the kidney undergoing catabolism. High glucose perfusate decreased MI reabsorption to 68.6+/-4.7% and thus decreased delivery of [2-(3)H]MI into the catabolic pool from the reabsorptive pathway. In the high glucose experiments, the rate of [2-(3)H]MI catabolism exceeded [2-(3)H]MI reabsorption by the same fraction as in normal glucose experiments, which indicates that high glucose did not affect nonreabsorptive access of MI to the catabolic site. In contrast to the effects of glucose, PTH administration resulted in an increase in perfusate MI concentration and a decrease in the perfusate [2-(3)H]MI specific activity. Concomitantly, urinary MI and [2-(3)H]MI concentrations were increased, again with a decrease in [2-(3)H]MI specific activity. These results indicate that PTH caused a release of MI into the urine (not the same as decreased MI reabsorption, which would not affect urinary [(3)H]MI specific activity) and into the perfusate of the isolated kidneys. These effects on MI release were about coincidental with the increase in urinary cyclic 3',5'-AMP after PTH and preceded the peak phosphaturic effect of PTH. There was no detectable effect of PTH on MI synthesis from glucose as a source of the MI released into the urine and perfusate. However, PTH temporarily halted accumulation of tritiated MI catabolites. There was no effect of inactivated PTH on urinary cyclic 3',5'-AMP or on MI transport, which indicates that the PTH effect on MI handling was a specific hormonal effect. These studies clarify the renal metabolism of MI, and they demonstrate heretofore unknown effects of PTH on the renal handling and metabolism of MI. The effects of PTH on renal MI metabolism have important implications in renal carbohydrate metabolism and phospholipid turnover.

Abstract
By using the time-resolved chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization technique, we show that the neutral guanosyl radical, G(-H)˙, formed in the reaction of guanosine-5'-monophosphate with a triplet-excited 3,3',4,4'-tetracarboxy benzophenone in neutral aqueous solution, protonates readily at the N7 position with the formation of a new guanosyl cation radical (G˙+)'.

Abstract
Time-resolved chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (TR-CIDNP) is applied to follow transformation of the short-lived neutral guanine radical into a secondary guanine radical by its protonation, presumably at position N7. In the initial step the photoreaction of guanosine-5'-monophosphate (GMP) with triplet excited 3,3',4,4'-tetracarboxy benzophenone (TCBP) leads to formation of the neutral radical G(-H). . The evidence of the radical conversion is based on the inversion of CIDNP sign for TCBP and GMP protons on the microsecond timescale as a result of the change in magnetic resonance parameters in the pairs of TCBP and GMP radicals due to structural changes of the GMP radical. Acceleration of the CIDNP sign change upon addition of phosphate (proton donor) confirms that the radical transformation responsible for the observed CIDNP kinetics is protonation of the neutral guanine radical with formation of the newly characterized cation radical, (G.+ )'. From the full analysis of the pH-dependent CIDNP kinetics, the protonation and deprotonation behaviour is quantitatively characterized, giving pKa =8.0±0.2 of the cation radical (G.+ )'.

Abstract
The effects of administration of 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) to normal and to hypothyroid male rats upon the hepatic activity of L-triiodothyronine aminotransferase were determined using 3,5-dinitro-L-tyrosine as substrate in the assay. Initial studies in normal rats demonstrated that basal enzyme activity was highest in liver and kidney of the organs tested, and that virtually no activity was detectable in skeletal muscle, serum, thyroid or pituitary gland. Hepatic enzyme activity increased from birth to a peak at 80-120 days and declined thereafter. Daily administration of T3 to normal rats in doses of 5 mug/100g BW for 8 days significantly elevated hepatic enzyme activity above normal. In daily doses of 2.5mug/100g BW, T3 restored the depressed enzyme activities in hypothyroid rats to normal. Daily administration of 3,3',5'-triiodothyronine (reverse T3) to normal rats in doses of 17.5 mug/100g BW and greater for 3 days increased L-T3 aminotransferase activity more than 30% above normal levels. Reverse T3 appeared to be approximately as active as T3 in increasing the hepatic activity of L-T3 aminotransferase.

Abstract
As a model of chemical DNA repair, intramolecular electron transfer from tryptophan to the radical of the purine base guanosine combined into a conjugate by a flexible linker was studied by time-resolved chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (CIDNP). The guanosyl radicals were photochemically generated in the quenching reaction of the triplet excited dye 2,2′-dipyridyl. The CIDNP kinetics was obtained by detection of NMR spectra containing anomalously enhanced signals of diamagnetic products that are formed during a variable period after excitation by a laser pulse. The kinetic data obtained for the protons located on the guanosyl and tryptophanyl moieties of the conjugate were compared to those obtained in photoreactions of the molecules containing the same linker, but with only one of the two reactive moieties of the conjugate – tryptophanyl or guanosyl. Strong differences between the CIDNP kinetics of different conjugates were revealed and explained by a rapid intramolecular electron transfer from tryptophan to the guanosyl radical in the conjugate. Model simulations of the CIDNP kinetics allowed for determination of the rate constant of intramolecular electron transfer at (1.0±0.5)×106 s–1 indicating a high potential of chemical repair of the guanosyl radical by means of electron transfer from the tryptophanyl moiety in a surrounding protein pool that can provide rather efficient protection of oxidized DNA bases from pathological damage on a submicrosecond time scale.

Abstract
We report a multifrequency nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of heterospin complexes [Eu(SQ)3Ln], where SQ is 3,6-di(tert-butyl)-1,2-semiquinone, L is tetrahydrofuran (THF), pyridine (Py), or 2,2'-dipyridyl (Dipy), and n is the number of diamagnetic ligands. Multifrequency NMR experiments allowed us to determine the effective paramagnetic shifts of the ligands (L = THF or Py) and the chemical equilibrium constant for [Eu(SQ)3(THF)2]. In addition, we have found a strong magnetic field effect on the NMR line broadening, giving rise to very broad NMR lines at high magnetic fields. We attribute this effect to broadening under fast exchange conditions when the NMR spectrum represents a homogeneously broadened line with a width proportional to the square of the NMR frequency difference of the free and bound forms of L. Consequently, the line width strongly increases with the magnetic field. This broadening effect allows one to determine relevant kinetic parameters, i.e., the effective exchange time. The strong broadening effect allows one to exploit the [Eu(SQ)3(THF)2] complex as an efficient shift reagent, which not only shifts unwanted NMR signals but also broadens them, notably, in high-field NMR experiments. We have also found that [Eu(SQ)3Dipy] is a thermodynamically stable complex; hence, one can study [Eu(SQ)3Dipy] solutions without special precautions. We report an X-ray structure of the [Eu(SQ)3Dipy]·C6D6 crystals that have been grown directly in an NMR tube. This shows that multifrequency NMR investigations of heterospin compound solutions not only provide thermodynamic and kinetic data for heterospin species but also can be useful for the rational design of stable heterospin complexes and optimization of synthetic approaches.

Abstract
This study presents a numerical simulation approach to investigate singlet-triplet interconversion effects in organic materials with rigid molecular structures that facilitate the photogeneration of charge-separated (CS) states, such as zwitterions resulting from intramolecular electron transfer. Our approach enables the detailed modeling of electron and nuclear spin-dependent observables, including magnetic field-affected reaction yields (MARY) and chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (CIDNP). The equilibrium solution of the stochastic Liouville equation can be obtained with simple algebraic manipulation by noting the relationship between the Laplace transform of the density operator and the time-domain representation of the same operator. Experimental MARY and CIDNP data are modeled as functions of key external and internal system parameters, such as magnetic field strength, hyperfine interactions, and exchange couplings. This allows for exploring processes that are otherwise experimentally inaccessible, providing deeper insights into the spin dynamics of the photoinduced CS state. Understanding these interconversion processes is not only essential for the fundamental photochemistry studies but also for the rational design and development of novel organic materials for photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Our results demonstrate the significant impact of singlet-triplet interconversion on the overall efficiency of charge separation and recombination processes, highlighting the importance of spin dynamics in the design of next-generation organic photovoltaic materials.

Abstract
Adiabatic pulses are widely used in magnetic resonance techniques, and their development and refinement remain very relevant. Adiabatic inverting pulses are highly robust for radiofrequency or microwave magnetic field inhomogeneities and enable manipulation of spins over a large frequency range. In this work, new inverting pulses for spin 1/2 are proposed which combine the adiabaticity remaining constant for the single isochromat throughout the pulse and the same adiabaticity for all isochromats in a given bandwidth, but only at the single instant of time when the frequency of the pulse coincides with the frequency of the isochromat. The dependence of inversion performance of these pulses on peak amplitude of RF field, while preserving the pulse shape, is studied. These pulses may be useful for a number of MRI techniques where inverting pulses are an integral part. A comparison with other widely used adiabatic inverting pulses reveals performance improvements, achieving up to 30-40 % enhancement in inversion efficiency.

Abstract
A segmented polyether urethane IUD was compared with a polyethylene IUD in rabbits. The contraceptive efficacy of urethane IUDs was excellent. Moreover, the purulent slippery deposit present with the polyethylene IUDs and observed by Davis et al. (1) was absent. Our studies indicate that the polyether urethane IUDs have a high degree of antifertility activity in rabbits and these IUDs have reduced inflammatory response, based on leucocytic infiltration and tissue debris in the uterine lumen. It is suggested that polyether urethane IUDs not requiring copper or other medication can be designed for high contraceptive efficacy, intrauterine compatibility and with the necessary rigidity for proper uterine retention in humans.

Abstract
A detailed experimental study on reversible photo-induced intramolecular charge separation is presented based on nuclear magnetic resonance detection of chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization. From variation of such polarization with the external magnetic field, the coupling constants of isotropic and anisotropic hyperfine interactions at individual 13C sites are measured in the short-lived charge separated state of dyad molecules composed of donor-bridge-acceptor parts. The objects of study were rigid donor-bridge-acceptor dyads, consisting of triarylamine as a donor, naphthalene diimide as an acceptor, and a meta-conjugated diethynylbenzene fragment as a bridge. By systematic variation of side groups in the bridging moiety, their influence on the electron withdrawing strength is traced. In combination with similar data for the 1H positions obtained previously for the same compounds [I. Zhukov et al., J. Chem. Phys. 152, 014203 (2020)], our results provide a reliable basis for the determination of the spin density distribution in the charge separated state of such dyads.
