Lignocellulosic materials as soil-cement brick reinforcement

The need for environmental preservation requires civil engineering to reach new concepts and technical solutions aiming at the sustainability of its activities and products. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of using different types and percentages of vegetable particles on the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of soil-cement bricks. Bamboo, rice husk, and coffee husk particles at 1.5 and 3% percentages and a control treatment not using the particle were evaluated. The chemical properties, shrinkage, compaction, consistency limits, and grain size were characterized for the soil; and the anatomical, chemical, and physical properties for the lignocellulosic particles. The bricks were produced using an automatic press and characterized after the curing process for density, water absorption, porosity, loss of mass by immersion, compressive strength, durability, and thermal conductivity. The increase in the lignocellulosic waste percentage caused a mechanical strength decrease and bricks' porosity and water absorption increase. However, it caused a decrease in density and an enhancement in loss of mass and thermal insulation properties. The bricks produced with rice husk obtained the best results in terms of mechanical and thermal properties, and were still among the best treatments for physical properties, standing out among the lignocellulosic waste as an alternative raw material source for soil-cement brick production.

Differential expression of antioxidant enzymes and PR-proteins in compatible and incompatible interactions of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita

This study aimed to evaluated the resistance and susceptibility of 10 cowpea cultivars to Meloidogyne incognita in field studies and to analyze the kinetics of the enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, chitinase, β-1,3-glucanases and cystein proteinase inhibitors in the root system of two contrasting cowpea cultivars after inoculation with M. incognita. The cultivars CE-31 and Frade Preto were highly resistant; CE-28, CE-01, CE-315, CE-237, were very resistant; CE-70 and CE-216 were moderately resistant, whereas Vita-3 and CE-109 were slightly resistant. In the roots of the highly resistant cultivar CE-31 the activity of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase increased and catalase decreased and those of the pathogenesis-related proteins chitinase, β-1,3-glucanase, peroxidase and cystein proteinase inhibitor increased in comparison with the root system of the slightly resistant CE-109, during the course of M. incognita infestation. Thus the changes in the activities of these enzymes might be related to the smaller final population of M. incognita in CE-31 and may contribute to the high resistance of this cowpea cultivar against infection and colonization by this nematode species.

Innervation of human epicardial coronary veins: immunohistochemistry and vasomotility

OBJECTIVE

The aim was to investigate the innervation and vasomotor responses to classical and putative transmitters of the coronary venous bed.

METHODS

The innervation of human epicardial coronary veins was investigated using acetylcholinesterase histochemistry and immunofluorescence staining, together with antisera against the general neuronal marker protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5), the catecholamine synthesising enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase, and neuropeptides [neuropeptide Y, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), substance P, and calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP)]. The vasomotor responses to noradrenaline, acetylcholine, neuropeptide Y, substance P, human alpha calcitonin gene related peptide (alpha CGRP), and VIP were tested on isolated circular human epicardial coronary vein segments.

RESULTS

A network of nerve fibres was shown in the major epicardial coronary veins by means of an antiserum to PGP 9.5. The majority of the perivascular nerve fibres possessed neuropeptide Y and tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity. Only a few nerve fibres displayed substance P, CGRP, and VIP immunoreactivity and acetylcholinesterase activity. Noradrenaline and acetylcholine induced powerful contractions of all the tested segments, whereas no contraction was induced by neuropeptide Y, alpha CGRP, substance P, or VIP. All segments precontracted with U46619 responded with potent relaxation to alpha CGRP, substance P, and VIP, whereas noradrenaline and acetylcholine only in low concentrations induced weak relaxation of a few of the segments. No relaxation was induced by neuropeptide Y.

CONCLUSIONS

This is the first study to demonstrate comprehensively the perivascular innervation of human coronary veins and corresponding vasomotor effects, suggesting a role in regulation of the coronary venous circulation.
