Abstract
The authors implemented an electronic medical record system in a rural Kenyan health center. Visit data are recorded on a paper encounter form, eliminating duplicate documentation in multiple clinic logbooks. Data are entered into an MS-Access database supported by redundant power systems. The system was initiated in February 2001, and 10,000 visit records were entered for 6,190 patients in six months. The authors present a summary of the clinics visited, diagnoses made, drugs prescribed, and tests performed. After system implementation, patient visits were 22% shorter. They spent 58% less time with providers (p < 0.001) and 38% less time waiting (p = 0.06). Clinic personnel spent 50% less time interacting with patients, two thirds less time interacting with each other, and more time in personal activities. This simple electronic medical record system has bridged the "digital divide." Financial and technical sustainability by Kenyans will be key to its future use and development.

Abstract
PETbox4 is a new, fully tomographic bench top PET scanner dedicated to high sensitivity and high resolution imaging of mice. This manuscript characterizes the performance of the prototype system using the National Electrical Manufacturers Association NU 4-2008 standards, including studies of sensitivity, spatial resolution, energy resolution, scatter fraction, count-rate performance and image quality. The PETbox4 performance is also compared with the performance of PETbox, a previous generation limited angle tomography system. PETbox4 consists of four opposing flat-panel type detectors arranged in a box-like geometry. Each panel is made by a 24 × 50 pixelated array of 1.82 × 1.82 × 7 mm bismuth germanate scintillation crystals with a crystal pitch of 1.90 mm. Each of these scintillation arrays is coupled to two Hamamatsu H8500 photomultiplier tubes via a glass light guide. Volumetric images for a 45 × 45 × 95 mm field of view (FOV) are reconstructed with a maximum likelihood expectation maximization algorithm incorporating a system model based on a parameterized detector response. With an energy window of 150-650 keV, the peak absolute sensitivity is approximately 18% at the center of FOV. The measured crystal energy resolution ranges from 13.5% to 48.3% full width at half maximum (FWHM), with a mean of 18.0%. The intrinsic detector spatial resolution is 1.5 mm FWHM in both transverse and axial directions. The reconstructed image spatial resolution for different locations in the FOV ranges from 1.32 to 1.93 mm, with an average of 1.46 mm. The peak noise equivalent count rate for the mouse-sized phantom is 35 kcps for a total activity of 1.5 MBq (40 µCi) and the scatter fraction is 28%. The standard deviation in the uniform region of the image quality phantom is 5.7%. The recovery coefficients range from 0.10 to 0.93. In comparison to the first generation two panel PETbox system, PETbox4 achieves substantial improvements on sensitivity and spatial resolution. The overall performance demonstrates that the PETbox4 scanner is suitable for producing high quality images for molecular imaging based biomedical research.

Abstract
Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation is often complicated by the life-threatening graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) which consists of an allogeneic reaction of the graft cells against the host organs. The aim of this study was to investigate the putative involvement of soluble human leucocyte antigen (sHLA) class I molecules, and particularly sHLA-G molecules, in the occurrence and/or prevention of acute GVHD (aGVHD) in allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell (PSC) transplantation. Whole sHLA class I molecules seem to be involved in aGVHD pathogenesis because detection of a high concentration of these molecules in the first month post allograft is correlated with aGVHD occurrence. Conversely, a high level of sHLA-G molecules before and after allograft could indicate good prognosis in PSC allograft transplantation. sHLA-G molecules seem to be involved in aGVHD prevention, not only because they are enriched in plasma of patients without aGVHD, but also because: (i) a positive correlation has been found between sHLA-G level and CD4+ CD25+ CD152+ natural regulatory T cell (T(reg)) frequency in the blood of transplanted patients; and (ii) the presence of CD4+ CD25+ CD152+ natural T(reg) is correlated with increased sHLA-G expression in in vitro mixed leucocyte reaction cultures. Altogether, these results support the immunomodulatory function of sHLA-G molecules that might create a regulatory network together with the natural T(reg) to foster the induction of a tolerogenic environment and improve PSC transplantation favourable outcome.

Abstract
In nature, plants are always under the threat of pests and diseases. Pathogenic bacteria are one of the major pathogen types to cause diseases in diverse plants, resulting in negative effects on plant growth and crop yield. Chemical bactericides and antibiotics have been used as major approaches for controlling bacterial plant diseases in the field or greenhouse. However, the appearance of resistant bacteria to common antibiotics and bactericides as well as their potential negative effects on environment and human health demands bacteriologists to develop alternative control agents. Bacteriophages, the viruses that can infect and kill only target bacteria very specifically, have been demonstrated as potential agents, which may have no negative effects on environment and human health. Many bacteriophages have been isolated against diverse plant-pathogenic bacteria, and many studies have shown to efficiently manage the disease development in both controlled and open conditions such as greenhouse and field. Moreover, the specificity of bacteriophages to certain bacterial species has been applied to develop detection tools for the diagnosis of plant-pathogenic bacteria. In this paper, we summarize the promising results from greenhouse or field experiments with bacteriophages to manage diseases caused by plant-pathogenic bacteria. In addition, we summarize the usage of bacteriophages for the specific detection of plant-pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract
Macamides are a distinct class of secondary metabolites, benzylamides of long chain fatty acids, which were isolated from the Peruvian plant Lepidium meyenii (Maca). As structural analogues of the endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA), they have demonstrated neuroprotective effects in vitro and in vivo. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the neuroprotective activity of the macamides: N-(3-methoxybenzyl)oleamide (MAC 18:1), N-(3-methoxybenzyl)linoleamide (MAC 18:2) and N-(3-methoxybenzyl)linolenamide (MAC 18:3) in a neurotoxic environment caused by exposure of U-87 MG glioblastoma cells to manganese chloride (MnCl2). The neuroprotective effects of these macamides were reversed by the CB1 antagonist AM251. The mechanism by which manganese (Mn) induces cell damage was investigated by studying its effects on mitochondria. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) increase intracellular calcium and enhance the opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pores (MPTP), which leads to decreased mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), to disruption of mitochondria and to neuron death in neurodegenerative disorders. In this study, MnCl2 at 50μM was responsible for mitochondrial disruption, which was attenuated by all three of the macamides tested. Human peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) has been proposed to be a cannabinoid target, and PPARγ has also been demonstrated to mediate some of the longer-term vascular effects of the plant cannabinoid, ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol. PPARγ activation was observed in response to exposures of cells to MAC 18:2 and MAC 18:3. These findings suggest that macamides achieve their neuroprotective effects by binding to CB1 receptors to protect against Mn-induced toxicity in U-87 MG glioblastoma cells. Additionally these macamides, in a manner similar to the analogous endocannabinoid AEA, interact with other targets such as PPARγ to regulate metabolism and energy homeostasis, cell differentiation and inflammation.

Abstract
Urine is often the sample of choice for drug screening in aviation/general forensic toxicology and in workplace drug testing. In some instances, the origin of the submitted samples may be challenged because of the medicolegal and socioeconomic consequences of a positive drug test. Methods for individualization of biological samples have reached a new boundary with the application of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in DNA profiling, but a successful characterization of the urine specimens depends on the quantity and quality of DNA present in the samples. Therefore, the present study investigated the influence of storage conditions, sample volume, concentration modes, extraction procedures, and chemical preservations on the quantity of DNA recovered, as well as the success rate of PCR-based genotyping for DQA1 and PM loci in urine. Urine specimens from male and female volunteers were divided and stored at various temperatures for up to 30 days. The results suggested that sample purification by dialfiltration, using 3000-100,000 molecular weight cut-off filters, did not enhance DNA recovery and typing rate as compared with simple centrifugation procedures. Extraction of urinary DNA by the organic method and by the resin method gave comparable typing results. Larger sample volume yielded a higher amount of DNA, but the typing rates were not affected for sample volumes between 1 and 5 ml. The quantifiable amounts of DNA present were found to be greater in female (14-200 ng/ml) than in male (4-60 ng/ml) samples and decreased with the elapsed time under both room temperature (RT) and frozen storage. Typing of the male samples also demonstrated that RT storage samples produced significantly higher success rates than that of frozen samples, while there was only marginal difference in the DNA typing rates among the conditions tested using female samples. Successful assignment of DQA1 + PM genotype was achieved for all samples of fresh urine, independent of gender, starting sample volume, or concentration method. Preservation by 0.25% sodium azide was acceptable for sample storage at 4 degrees C during a period of 30 days. For longer storage duration, freezing at -70 degrees C may be more appropriate. Thus, the applicability of the DQA1 + PM typing was clearly demonstrated for individualization of urine samples.

Abstract
We studied the activities of the new fluoroquinolones clinafloxacin, levofloxacin, ofloxacin, and sparfloxacin alone or in combination on the intracellular growth of Listeria monocytogenes. Against intracellular growth of the four strains tested, a similar reduction of the bacterial count was obtained with clinafloxacin at the dose of 10 x MIC (delta log10 CFU/ml = -2.19 +/- 0.24), with levofloxacin at 8 x MIC (delta log10 CFU/ml = -2.28 +/- 0.25), and with sparfloxacin at 4 x MIC (delta log10 CFU/ml = -2.16 +/- 0.21) after 24 h of incubation. The combination of the quinolones with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole or amoxicillin did not show a substantial increase in activity compared to the fluoroquinolone alone. Antagonism with rifampin was strongly suggested. No modification of the MIC was observed after 20 successive infections of HeLa cells and contact with subinhibitory concentrations of clinafloxacin, levofloxacin, and sparfloxacin for 24 h. We conclude that clinafloxacin, levofloxacin, or sparfloxacin could represent a therapeutic alternative to amoxicillin for the treatment of Listeria infections in adults, especially clinafloxacin, whose MIC is low (0.06 to 0.12 micrograms/ml), and whose best activity against intracellular L. monocytogenes was obtained at a concentration of 1.2 micrograms/ml, which is similar to clinically achievable levels. The results must be confirmed in an experimental model.

Abstract
The 1,2,5-thiadiazolidin-3-one 1,1 dioxide scaffold (I) embodies a motif that allows it to dock to the active site of (chymo)trypsin-like proteases in a predictable and substrate-like fashion. Consequently, inhibitors derived from this heterocyclic scaffold interact with both the S and S' subsites of an enzyme. Exploitation of binding interactions with both the S and S' subsites of a target enzyme may lead to compounds with greatly enhanced enzyme selectivity and inhibitory potency. This preliminary report describes the use of a series of compounds having the heterocyclic scaffold linked to various amino acids to probe the S' subsites of human leukocyte elastase (HLE), proteinase 3 (PR 3), and cathepsin G (Cat G). For comparative purposes, a series of compounds derived from a related scaffold, isothiazolidin-3-one 1,1 dioxide (II), was also generated. Several of the compounds were found to be highly potent and selective time-dependent inhibitors of HLE, PR 3, and Cat G.

Abstract
A beta camera has been developed that allows planar imaging of the spatial and temporal distribution of beta particles using a 14 × 14 mm(2) position sensitive avalanche photodiode (PSAPD). This camera system, which we call Betabox, can be directly coupled to microfluidic chips designed for cell incubation or other biological applications. Betabox allows for imaging the cellular uptake of molecular imaging probes labeled with charged particle emitters such as (18)F inside these chips. In this work, we investigate the quantitative imaging capabilities of Betabox for (18)F beta particles, in terms of background rate, efficiency, spatial resolution, and count rate. Measurements of background and spatial resolution are considered both at room temperature (21 °C ± 1 °C) and at an elevated operating temperature (37 °C ± 1 °C), as is often required for biological assays. The background rate measured with a 4 keV energy cutoff is below 2 cph mm(-2) at both 21 and 37 °C. The absolute efficiency of Betabox for the detection of (18)F positron sources in contact with a PSAPD with the surface passivated from ambient light and damage is 46% ± 1%. The lower detection limit is estimated using the Rose Criterion to be 0.2 cps mm(-2) for 1 min acquisitions and a 62 × 62 µm(2) pixel size. The upper detection limit is approximately 21 000 cps. The spatial resolution at both 21 and 37 °C ranges from 0.4 mm FWHM at the center of the field of view (FOV), and degrades to 1 mm at a distance of 5 mm away from center yielding a useful FOV of approximately 10 × 10 mm(2). We also investigate the effects on spatial resolution and sensitivity that result from the use of a polymer based microfluidic chip. For these studies we place varying layers of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) between the detector and the source and find that the spatial resolution degrades by ∼180 µm for every 100 µm of LDPE film. Sensitivity is reduced by half with the inclusion of ∼200 µm of additional LDPE film. Lastly, we demonstrate the practical utilization of Betabox, with an imaging test of its linearity, when coupled to a polydimethylsiloxane microfluidic chip designed for cell based assays.

Abstract
Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes bacterial canker disease in kiwifruit. Copper or antibiotics have been used in orchards to control this disease, but the recent emergence of antibiotic-resistant Psa has called for the development of a new control agent. We previously reported that the bacteriophage (or phage) PPPL-1 showed antibacterial activity for both biovar 2 and 3 of Psa. To investigate the possibility of PPPL-1 to control bacterial canker in kiwifruit, we further tested the efficacy of PPPL-1 and its phage cocktail with two other phages on suppressing disease development under greenhouse conditions using 6 weeks old kiwifruit plants. Our results showed that the disease control efficacy of PPPL-1 treatment was statistically similar to those of phage cocktail treatment or AgrimycinTM, which contains streptomycin and oxytetracycline antibiotics as active ingredients. Moreover, PPPL-1 could successfully kill streptomycin-resistant Psa isolates, of which the treatment of BuramycinTM carrying only streptomycin as an active ingredient had no effect in vitro. The phage PPPL-1 was further characterized, and stability assays showed that the phage was stable in the field soil and at low temperature of 0 ± 2 °C. In addition, the phage could be scaled up quickly up to 1010 pfu/mL at 12 h later from initial multiplicity of infection of 0.000005. Our results indicate that PPPL-1 phage is a useful candidate as a biocontrol agent and could be a tool to control the bacterial canker in kiwifruit by Psa infection in the field conditions.

Abstract
This paper presents the use of soft template method to synthesize core and core-shell up-converting nanoparticles usefull for temperature sensing applications. Based on the stock solutions of core β-NaYF4:Er3+,Yb3+ nanoparticles and involving soft template method without any additional process of surface functionalization, it is possible to directly design the core-shell β-NaYF4:Er3+,Yb3+@NaYF4 nanoparticles, which can be perfectly dispersed in cyclohexane and surfactants like oleic acid (OA), triethanolamine (TEA) or Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The morphological, crystalline and elemental characteristics of samples were investigated by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, Selected Area Electron Diffraction patterns and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) measurements. The results showed that the synthesized NaYF4:Er3+,Yb3+@NaYF4 core-shell nanoparticles have roughly spherical shape, pure hexagonal β phase with core size of about 35 ± 5 nm and shell thickness of about 40 ± 5 nm. It has been shown that the coating of the β-NaYF4:Er3+,Yb3+ core with NaYF4 shell layer enables to enhance the green upconversion (UC) emission intensities in respect to red one. Under 976 nm excitation, the synthesized β-NaYF4:2%Er3+,19%Yb3+@NaYF4 core-shell nanoparticles revealed three strong emission bands at 520 nm, 545 nm and 650 nm corresponding to 2H11/2, 4S3/2 and 4F9/2 to 4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions with the lifetimes of 215, 193 and 474 µs, respectively. The calculated CIE chromaticity coordinates proved that the emission colour of core-shell nanoparticles was changed from red into yellowish green upon increasing the power density of the 976 nm laser from 0.73 to 9.95 W/cm2. The calculated slopes indicated that in the β-NaYF4:2%Er3+,19%Yb3+@NaYF4 core-shell nanoparticles, two-photon and three-photon UC processes took place simultaneously. Although the former one is similar as in the case of β-NaYF4:Er3+,Yb3+ bare core nanoparticles, the latter one, three-photon UC process for green emission occurs, due to cross relaxation processes of two Er3+ ions only within nanoparticles with core-shell architecture. Moreover, the energy difference between the 2H11/2 and 4S3/2 levels and associated constant of NaYF4@NaYF4 host lattice were determined and they reached ~ 813 cm-1 and 14.27 (r2 = 0.998), respectively. In order to investigate the suitability of nanoparticles for optical temperature sensing, the emission spectra were measured in a wide temperature range from 158 to 298 K. An exceptionally high value of relative sensitivity was obtained at 158 K and it amounted to 4.25% K-1. Further temperature increase resulted in gradual decrease of relative sensitivity, however, it maintained a high value > 1% K-1 in the entire analyzed temperature range.

The iontophoretic transport properties of sodium cromoglycate were characterized using a synthetic membrane and excised hairless mouse skin. The permeation rate of sodium cromoglycate through the synthetic membrane was found to be linearly dependent on the density of electrical current applied. Passive diffusion through the excised hairless mouse skin was not demonstrated for sodium cromoglycate; however, under iontophoresis, an appreciable permeation was exhibited by the drug through the animal skin, which was also found to be a function of the electrical current density.

Abstract: COVID-19 has affected many people all around the world for more than two years now have suffered many long-term consequences which is commonly referred to as long-haulers. Despite multiorgan complaints in long haulers, symptoms related to cognitive functions commonly referred as brain fog are seen in the high risk covid patients with age more than 50, women more than men, obesity, asthma and those who experienced more than five symptoms during the first week of covid illness. Long term isolation has certainly contributed to high level of anxiety and stress calling for an empathetic response to this group of covid patients as there is no specific test to detect long haulers and no specific cognitive rehabilitation techniques available as of today.

Abstract
In this paper, the luminescent complex Eu(3-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate)3 was integrated with Fe3O4 and gold (Au) nanoparticles to form a multifunctional nanocomposite, Fe3O4/Au/Eu(TTA)3 (FOASET NC), for dual magnetic-photothermal therapy and biomedical imaging. Upon functionalization with amine-NH2, the FOASET NC exhibits a small size of 60-70 nm and strong, sharp emission at λmax = 614 nm, enhanced by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Au nanoparticles that provided an effective label for HT29 colorectal cancer cells by fluorescence microscopy imaging. In addition, a hyperthermia temperature (42-46 °C) was completely achieved by using these FOASET NCs in an aqueous solution with three heating modes for (i) Magnetic therapy (MT), (ii) Photothermal therapy (PT), and (iii) Dual magnetic-photothermal therapy (MPT). The heating efficiency was improved in the dual magnetic-photothermal heating mode.

Abstract
A silicone elastomer latex was evaluated as a topical drug-delivery system. With the addition of a fumed silica and the removal of water, the latex produced elastomeric solid films. The water vapour permeability of the solid film was found to be a function of the film composition. An increase in silica content and the incorporation of a water-soluble component, PEG 3350, rendered the silicone elastomer-free film even more permeable to water vapour. The release of hydrocortisone from the elastomer film can be described by a matrix-diffusion-controlled mechanism. Drug diffusion is thought to occur through the hydrophobic silicone polymer network and the hydrated hydrophilic silica region in the film matrix. Silicone elastomer film with a higher silica content exhibited a faster drug-release rate. The addition of PEG 3350 to the film further enhanced the drug-release rate.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE Management of cranial and scalp defects is always challenging. Complication rates following cranioplasty are still high (10-40 %), including bone graft resorption, infection, and T-mesh implant exposure due to thinning of soft tissue (Yeap et al., 2019; Alkhaibary et al., 2020; Cho and Kang, 2017 [1-3]). CASE PRESENTATION We present a case of a 38-year-old male with autologous bone graft resorption accompanied by thinning of the forehead skin. He underwent cranioplasty with titanium mesh (T-mesh) and scalp reconstruction with an anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap in a single-stage operation. A 2-component ALT flap was used: the skin paddle covered the scalp defect to reduce closure tension, and especially the adipofascial flap lining beneath the forehead skin to increase thickness. Postoperative results were great in terms of coverage function and aesthetics. CLINICAL DISCUSSION The phenomenon of soft tissue thinning causing titanium mesh exposure is a common complication with a rate of 10-14 % (Yeap et al., 2019; Dong et al., 2020; Maqbool et al., 2018 [1, 4, 5]). Using adipofascial ALT flap as a sub-scalp filler material has many advantages over the latissimus dorsi (LD) flap to increase scalp thickness but still ensure aesthetics. CONCLUSION The results suggest a new direction in using adipofascial ALT flap as filler material to increase scalp thickness to reduce T-mesh exposure following cranioplasty.
