Ozone: An Adjunct in Dental Treatment

Ozone is utilized in dentistry as ozonated oils, ozonated water, and gaseous ozone. The application of ozone in all specialties of dentistry has been demonstrated to be biocompatible. It has been demonstrated to encourage the remineralization of recently carious teeth, and it is utilized in dental caries and intracanal irrigants in endodontic treatment. Herpes virus infection, avascular osteonecrosis of the jaw, and alveolitis have all been treated with it. It can be applied as a supplement in the surgical and ongoing stages of periodontal disease and also hinders plaque formation. The purpose of the present review article is to discuss the numerous application of ozone in dentistry.

Need for enrichment of lutetium isotope and design of a laser based separator module

Lutetium-177 radio-pharmaceutical has become an important theranostic candidate in cancer treatment. Its availability from bench-to-bed requires strategic implementation of isotope-enrichment, neutron-irradiation and radio-chemical techniques. In this paper, the need for enrichment of lutetium-176 is emphasized by estimating specific activity of lutetium-177 as a function of enrichment percentage for typical neutron flux available at Dhruva reactor, India. A novel Atomic Vapour Laser Isotope Separation (AVLIS) module for lutetium-176 enrichment is designed to meet the above requirement. The paper documents its characteristics and production estimates. The design is carried out after critical assessment and evaluation of available AVLIS-infrastructure in the country. Outline of lutetium-177 enrichment, capable of producing non-carrier-added lutetium is also provided. This work concludes that India has taken a step forward towards self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in securing the supply chain of lutetium-177.

Glimpse of TENS in Dentistry: A Literature Review

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy has been accepted to treat a wide range of illnesses, including phantom limb pain, joint pain, low back pain, and cervical discomfort. TENS is not frequently used in dentistry, despite its potential advantages. 3, 4 Therefore, the rationale of present review is to discuss its dental applications in order to spread awareness of them among the dental profession.

Artificial intelligence enabled non-invasive T-ray imaging technique for early detection of coronavirus infected patients

A new artificial intelligence (AI) supported T-Ray imaging system designed and implemented for non-invasive and non-ionizing screening for coronavirus-affected patients. The new system has the potential to replace the standard conventional X-Ray based imaging modality of virus detection. This research article reports the development of solid state room temperature terahertz source for thermograph study. Exposure time and radiation energy are optimized through several real-time experiments. During its incubation period, Coronavirus stays within the cell of the upper respiratory tract and its presence often causes an increased level of blood supply to the virus-affected cells/inter-cellular region that results in a localized increase of water content in those cells & tissues in comparison to its neighbouring normal cells. Under THz-radiation exposure, the incident energy gets absorbed more in virus-affected cells/inter-cellular region and gets heated; thus, the sharp temperature gradient is observed in the corresponding thermograph study. Additionally, structural changes in virus-affected zones make a significant contribution in getting better contrast in thermographs. Considering the effectiveness of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) analysis tool in various medical diagnoses, the authors have employed an explainable AI-assisted methodology to correctly identify and mark the affected pulmonary region for the developed imaging technique and thus validate the model. This AI-enabled non-ionizing THz-thermography method is expected to address the voids in early COVID diagnosis, at the onset of infection.

Diabetic Retinopathy and Its Effect on Quality of Life: An Original Research

INTRODUCTION

Diabetes is associated with the vascular and the neuronal damage of the eye leading to diabetic retinopathy (DR). The circadian rhythms and also the quality of life (QoL) are known to be impacted by the photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, which are seen to be affected in the DR. Hence, we aim to find a relation between the DR and its impact on the life quality.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thousand participants were equally divided into two groups of case and controls (DR). The control group was further divided into three subgroups based on the severity of the disease as proliferative and nonproliferative (mild, moderate, and severe). The impact on the QoL was assessed using the Short Form Health Survey-36. The collected data were analyzed for the various grades of the severity of DR on the quality of the life.

RESULTS

There was a notable change between the case and the controls and the QoL deteriorated with the severity of the disease. However, these findings were insignificant statistically.

CONCLUSION

DR impacts the QoL of the patients, and the severity of the disease is proportional to the worsening of the disease. Further, research is warranted for the association.

Efficiency of Laser versus Bur in Impacted Mandibular Third Molar Surgery: An Original Research

INTRODUCTION

In oral and maxillofacial surgery, their clinical application has largely been restricted to soft tissue. Hence, the aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of erbium-yttrium aluminum garnet (Er: YAG) laser in bone cutting for removal of impacted lower third molar teeth and to compare its outcomes with that of surgical bur.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study comprised forty subjects requiring removal of impacted mandibular third molar, randomly categorized into two equal groups of 20 each, who had their impacted third molar removed either using Er: YAG laser or surgical bur as per their group, using standard methodology of extraction of impacted teeth. Clinical parameters such as pain, bleeding, time taken for bone cutting, postoperative swelling, trismus, wound healing, and complications were compared for both groups.

RESULTS

Clinical parameters such as pain, bleeding, and swelling were lower in laser group than bur group, although the difference was statistically not significant. However, postoperative swelling showed a significant difference in the two groups. Laser group required almost double the time taken for bone cutting with bur. Trismus persisted for a longer period in laser group. Wound healing and complications were assessed clinically and there was no significant difference in both the groups.

CONCLUSION

Based on the results of our study, the possibility of bone cutting using lasers is pursued, the osteotomy is easily performed, and the technique is better suited to minimally invasive surgical procedures. The use of Er: YAG laser may be considered an alternative tool to surgical bur, especially in anxious patients.

Plasmon-Induced Dimerization of Thiazolidine-2,4-dione on Silver Nanoparticles: Revealed by Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Study

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) study carried on thiazolidine-2,4-dione (TZD), a pharmacologically active heterocyclic compound, points to the presence of TZD dimer formed by plasmon-induced dimerization reaction of TZD on the surface of silver nanoparticles (Ag NP) at TZD concentrations of 10^-3 M and above. The evidence for the presence of dimer was obtained from the appearance of a prominent band at 1566 cm^-1 corresponding to the ν(C═C) band (a characteristic vibrational band observed for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction products) which is absent in the normal Raman scattering (NRS) spectra of TZD solid/solution. The observed spectrum compares well with the calculated spectrum of dimer obtained using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The dimerization reaction is plausibly induced by the transfer of hot electrons generated by the nonradiative plasmon decay of Ag NP, and the proposed reaction mechanism is discussed. However, at lower concentrations (10^-4-10^-6 M), the characteristic dimer peak (1566 cm^-1) is absent and the SERS spectra resemble more the NRS spectrum of TZD with a few changes. The spectral analysis supported by DFT calculations showed that TZD molecules undergo deprotonation and get adsorbed on the Ag NP surface as enolate forms. The proximity of TZD molecules on the surface of Ag NP is a necessary factor for the dimerization to occur. At lower concentrations, most molecules lie apart and reactions between molecules become less feasible, and they remain as monomers on the surface, while at higher concentrations the molecules are closer to each other on the Ag NP surface favoring the dimerization reaction to take place, leading to the formation of the dimer.

Raman and XPS study on the interaction of taurine with silver nanoparticles

The SERS spectrum of taurine suggests the predominance of the gauche conformer with sulphonate and amino groups involved in binding.

Investigation on the adsorption characteristics of anserine on the surface of colloidal silver nanoparticles

The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) studies of anserine (beta-alanyl-N-methylhistidine) was carried out on colloidal silver nanoparticles to understand its adsorption characteristics. The experimentally observed Raman bands were assigned based on the results of DFT calculations. The studies suggest that the interaction of anserine is primarily through the carboxylate group with the imidazole ring in an upright position with respect to the silver surface. Concentration dependent SERS studies suggest a change in orientation at sub-monolayer concentration.

Cα−H Bond-Stretching Frequency in Alcohols as a Probe of Hydrogen-Bonding Strength: A Combined Vibrational Spectroscopic and Theoretical Study of n-[1-D]Propanol

The sensitivity of the nu(C)()alpha(-)(H/D) vibrational stretching frequency to hydrogen bonding in alcohols is examined by infrared and Raman spectroscopy, supported by DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p) calculations. The model compound studied is (R,S)-n-[1-D]propanol. It is shown that the nu(C)()alpha(-)(H/D) mode can be successfully correlated with the hydrogen-bond strength in a given solvent, provided the O-H group involved in the hydrogen bond is not acting simultaneously as a hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor. In addition, a detailed analysis of the spectroscopic features observed in both the nu(O)(-)(H) and nu(C)()alpha(-)(H/D) spectral regions of the spectra of n-propanol and (R,S)-n-[1-D]propanol, in a series of different experimental conditions, which include the matrix-isolated compound (in argon matrix), pure liquid and low-temperature glassy states, and solution in different solvents, is undertaken. This permits the contribution of the different conformers of the studied compounds to be assigned to the bands observed in the nu(O)(-)(H) and nu(C)(-)(H) spectral regions.

Proton transfer from histidine 244 may facilitate the 1,2 rearrangement reaction in coenzyme B(12)-dependent methylmalonyl-CoA mutase

Methylmalonyl-CoA mutase is an adenosylcobalamin-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the 1,2 rearrangement of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA. This reaction results in the interchange of a carbonyl-CoA group and a hydrogen atom on vicinal carbons. The crystal structure of the enzyme reveals the presence of an aromatic cluster of residues in the active site that includes His-244, Tyr-243, and Tyr-89 in the large subunit. Of these, His-244 is within hydrogen bonding distance to the carbonyl oxygen of the carbonyl-CoA moiety of the substrate. The location of these aromatic residues suggests a possible role for them in catalysis either in radical stabilization and/or by direct participation in one or more steps in the reaction. The mechanism by which the initially formed substrate radical isomerizes to the product radical during the rearrangement of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA is unknown. Ab initio molecular orbital theory calculations predict that partial proton transfer can contribute significantly to the lowering of the barrier for the rearrangement reaction. In this study, we report the kinetic characterization of the H244G mutant, which results in an acute sensitivity of the enzyme to oxygen, indicating the important role of this residue in radical stabilization. Mutation of His-244 leads to an approximately 300-fold lowering in the catalytic efficiency of the enzyme and loss of one of the two titratable pK(a) values that govern the activity of the wild type enzyme. These data suggest that protonation of His-244 increases the reaction rate in wild type enzyme and provides experimental support for ab initio molecular orbital theory calculations that predict rate enhancement of the rearrangement reaction by the interaction of the migrating group with a general acid. However, the magnitude of the rate enhancement is significantly lower than that predicted by the theoretical studies.

A rapid and reliable solid-phase extraction--LC/MS/MS assay for the determination of two novel human leukocyte elastase inhibitors, SYN-1390 and SYN-1396, in rat plasma

A rapid and rugged solid-phase extraction-liquid chromatographic-electrospray tandem mass spectrometric method has been developed to quantitate two novel human leukocyte elastase inhibitors, SYN-1390 and SYN-1396, in rat plasma. A reversed-phase column and an isocratic mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile-water-formic acid (70:30:0.2, v/v/v) were used. The mass spectrometer was operated in the multiple reaction monitoring mode. For both analytes, standard curves were linear over a working range of 0.1-20 microg ml(-1) (r> or =0.995) and the limit of quantitation was 0.1 microg ml(-1) with a 150 microl plasma volume. This assay proved to be useful for the determination of SYN-1390 and SYN-1396 in plasma samples from pharmacokinetic study.
