Seroprevalence of sexually transmitted infections over 44 years - A cross-sectional study in Sweden. Int J STD AIDS 2024:9564624241248874. Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) may cause substantial individual suffering and a large economic burden for society. This study examined the seroprevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2, and several human papillomaviruses (HPV) in the Swedish population over time. METHODS The study population consisted of 30-year-old women attending maternity care, and 50 year-old men and women attending health check-ups, from 1975 to 2018. Antibody status was determined by multiplex serology and quantified using median reporter fluorescence intensity (MFI). RESULTS A total of 891 samples were analysed (519 from 30-year-old women, 186 from 50 year-old women and 186 from 50 year-old men). Of these, 41.5% showed seropositivity for Chlamydia trachomatis, 16.7% for Mycoplasma genitalium, 70.5% for HSV-1, 14.9% for HSV-2, 13.2% for high-risk HPV, and 8.3% for low-risk HPV. Seropositivity for Mycoplasma genitalium, HSV-1 and especially Chlamydia trachomatis decreased over time. CONCLUSIONS There was a decrease over time in Chlamydia trachomatis seroprevalence, probably due to contact tracing, testing and early treatment; this might also have affected Mycoplasma genitalium seroprevalence. Despite the reduction, seroprevalences are still high, so continued and new efforts to reduce STI incidence are essential.

Abstract
Studies have shown that psychological distress has a role in the symptomology of localized provoked vulvodynia. Therefore, psychosocial support has been presented as a valuable part of the treatment. However, little is known about which psychological variables that coincide with localized provoked vulvodynia. The purpose of this study was to identify qualities of psychological distress in patients with localized provoked vulvodynia. Patients with localized provoked vulvodynia were consecutively recruited to participate in this cross-sectional questionnaire-based study. Participants completed a self-report questionnaire measuring perfectionism, impostor phenomenon, self-compassion, anxiety and perceived stress. A sample of 30 patients were included. Questionnaire results suggestive of perfectionism was seen in 63%, impostor phenomenon in 80%, low self-compassion in 27%, anxiety in 43% and perceived stress in 23% of the participants. The level of self-compassion was higher in patients in a committed relationship. The investigated qualities appear to be more common in patients with localized provoked vulvodynia than in comparable groups. Impostor phenomenon and perfectionism were particularly common, with more than half of the study population scoring above the cutoff for clinical significance. This motivates research to investigate if interventions targeting impostor phenomenon and perfectionism, may aid in the treatment of localized provoked vulvodynia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have indicated that atopic dermatitis (AD) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, data are conflicting. Furthermore, the longitudinal effect of childhood AD on cardiovascular risk factors in young adulthood is less investigated. OBJECTIVES To assess associations between AD in childhood and CVD risk factors in young adulthood. METHODS The study encompasses longitudinal data from a population-based birth cohort. Participants with data up to age 24 years were included (n = 2270). The primary outcomes were body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), body fat per cent (BF%) and blood pressure (BP) at 24 years. The secondary outcome was blood lipids. Severe AD was defined as AD in combination with sleep disturbance due to itching. RESULTS In total, 18.6% (n = 420) had AD at 24 years. Males with AD had higher BMI (βAdj. 0.81, 95% CI 0.15-1.47), BF% (βAdj. 1.19, 95% CI 0.09-2.29), systolic BP (βAdj. 1.92, 95% CI 0.02-3.82), total cholesterol (βAdj. 0.14, 95% CI 0.00-0.28) and LDL cholesterol (βAdj. 0.15, 95% CI 0.02-0.27) compared with males without AD. No associations were seen in females. Current AD with prepubertal onset was associated with increased BMI in both males (βAdj. 0.89, 95% CI 0.11-1.67) and females (βAdj. 0.72, 95% CI 0.11-1.33). At 24 years, 23.1% (n = 97) of all with AD, had severe disease, which was significantly associated with overweight in both sexes, with BMI (βAdj. 1.83, 95% CI 0.72-2.94), WC (βAdj. 4.03, 95% CI 1.54-6.52) and BF% (βAdj. 2.49, 95% CI 0.60-4.39) in females and with BF% (βAdj. 2.96, 95% CI 0.23-5.69) in males, compared with peers with mild to moderate AD. CONCLUSION AD in males appears to be associated with CVD risk factors in young adulthood. The duration and severity of AD seem to be of importance in both sexes.

Abstract
Background Understanding the influence of participatory video-making on the nutrition-related behavior of video creators may help shape nutrition education interventions. Objectives This study assessed the perceived value and influence of a participatory video intervention among participants and stakeholders. Methods A 2018-2019 cluster randomized controlled trial (registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03704649) selected 20 schools (10 intervention, n = 181; 10 control, n = 170) in 1 Ghanaian rural district, enrolled adolescent girls aged 13-16 y, and provided a nutrition curriculum. Each intervention school also participated in 2 series of activities designed to help adolescents plan, film, and screen 2 nutrition-related videos. The Most Significant Change method involved intervention participants and local stakeholders to assess the value and influence of the intervention - a secondary outcome of the trial. Project staff collected 116 stories of change from the adolescents. Stories described shifts in 4 domains: participant, peer, and family behavior, and structural changes in the school. The project team used a selection rubric to identify 14 stories that reflected heightened nutrition literacy. Staff conducted interviews with the 14 adolescents whose stories were selected to elaborate on details and perceived resonance. Finally, local stakeholders assessed the stories to identify the 4 most significant changes of the intervention - 1 per domain. A separate thematic analysis identified emerging patterns of motivation and action across the 14 interviews. Results The chosen Most Significant Change stories revealed how adolescents found creative solutions to acquire iron-rich foods, encouraged neighbors to eat iron-rich foods, taught their family new agricultural practices, and promoted change in their school canteen. Local stakeholders valued stories that addressed common community nutrition issues in a creative and sustainable way, whereas adolescents prioritized stories that showed a change in health outcomes. Conclusion Stories of change revealed that the intervention promoted a transformative influence; participants modified their eating habits, lifestyle, and their environment.

Abstract
The first full angular analysis and an updated measurement of the decay-rate CP asymmetry of the D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-} and D^{0}→K^{+}K^{-}μ^{+}μ^{-} decays are reported. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}. The full set of CP -averaged angular observables and their CP asymmetries are measured as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. The results are consistent with expectations from the standard model and with CP symmetry.

Abstract
Tests of lepton universality in B^{0}→K_{S}^{0}ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} and B^{+}→K^{*+}ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} decays where ℓ is either an electron or a muon are presented. The differential branching fractions of B^{0}→K_{S}^{0}e^{+}e^{-} and B^{+}→K^{*+}e^{+}e^{-} decays are measured in intervals of the dilepton invariant mass squared. The measurements are performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1} . The results are consistent with the standard model and previous tests of lepton universality in related decay modes. The first observation of B^{0}→K_{S}^{0}e^{+}e^{-} and B^{+}→K^{*+}e^{+}e^{-} decays is reported.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate whether Swedish swingers constitute a risk group for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Two swinger clubs were invited to participate. At swinger meetings, members were offered an STI sampling kit and a questionnaire. Samples were analyzed for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, and Trichomonas vaginalis using a multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction assay. In total, 235 swingers participated (118 women and 117 men). Urogenital C. trachomatis prevalence was 1.7%. Urogenital M. genitalium prevalence was 7.6% for women and 4.3% for men. No one tested positive for N. gonorrhoeae or T. vaginalis. For women, the mean number of unprotected temporary sex partners within the last 12 months was four men (range 0-35) and three women (range 0-50). Among men, the mean number of unprotected temporary sex partners within the last 12 months was five women (range 0-50) and 0 men (range 0-10). During vaginal sex, 46.6% women and 38.5% men always used protection with a temporary sex partner. Swedish swingers did not seem to have an increased prevalence of STIs. However, there was high-risk sexual behavior with unprotected sex and multiple sex partners, thereby making them a vulnerable group for acquiring STIs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to investigate how an infection with Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) influenced patients' well-being and whether there were differences due to gender, age or relationship status, in an effort to strengthen preventive measures and provide better healthcare for patients with CT. METHODS Patients diagnosed with CT in the county of Västerbotten, Sweden, were asked to fill out a questionnaire about their feelings, thoughts and actions after CT diagnosis. The patients were also asked to fill in the validated questionnaires Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test. Between February 2015 and January 2017, 128 patients (74 women and 54 men) were included in the study. RESULTS After being diagnosed with CT, men were generally less worried than women (P<0.001). Women worried more about not being able to have children (P<0.001) and about having other STIs (P=0.001) than men did. Men felt less angry (P=0.001), less bad (P<0.001), less dirty (P<0.001) and less embarrassed (P=0.011) than women did. Nineteen per cent of men and 48% of women reported symptoms of anxiety. The majority of both men (60%) and women (72%) had a risk consumption of alcohol. CONCLUSION Women and men reacted differently when diagnosed with CT. Women worried more about complications and more often blamed themselves for being infected. Being aware of these gender differences may be important when planning preventive measures and during counselling of CT-infected patients. Persons working with patients with CT must also be aware of the high frequency of harmful alcohol consumption among their patients.

Abstract
This study evaluates the use of teledermatology at Norrland University Hospital in Northern Sweden between 2009 and 2014. In total, there were 27 198 incoming referrals. Of these, 1504 had photo attachments, and could be answered directly without a face-to-face appointment. Most of these referrals (73%) came from health care providers more than 100 kilometres away and 71% were answered within a week. Patients received care sooner and saved both time and money by less travelling. Teledermatology lead to less delay to a face-to-face appointment for patients where teledermatology was not an option.

Abstract
Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in Europe and has large impacts on patients' physical and emotional health. Unidentified asymptomatic rectal Chlamydia trachomatis could be a partial explanation for the high Chlamydia trachomatis prevalence. In this study, we evaluated rectal Chlamydia trachomatis testing in relation to symptoms and sexual habits in women and men who have sex with men. Rectal Chlamydia trachomatis prevalence was 9.1% in women and 0.9% in men who have sex with men. None of the patients reported any rectal symptoms; 59.0% of the women with a rectal Chlamydia trachomatis infection denied anal intercourse and 18.8% did not have a urogenital infection; 9.4% did neither have a urogenital infection nor reported anal sex. We suggest that rectal sampling should be considered in women visiting sexually transmitted infection clinics regardless of rectal symptoms and irrespective of anal intercourse, since our data suggest that several cases of rectal Chlamydia trachomatis otherwise would be missed, thus enabling further disease transmission.

Abstract
Allergic diseases [asthma, rhinitis and atopic dermatitis (AD)] are complex. They are associated with allergen-specific IgE and nonallergic mechanisms that may coexist in the same patient. In addition, these diseases tend to cluster and patients present concomitant or consecutive diseases (multimorbidity). IgE sensitization should be considered as a quantitative trait. Important clinical and immunological differences exist between mono- and polysensitized subjects. Multimorbidities of allergic diseases share common causal mechanisms that are only partly IgE-mediated. Persistence of allergic diseases over time is associated with multimorbidity and/or IgE polysensitization. The importance of the family history of allergy may decrease with age. This review puts forward the hypothesis that allergic multimorbidities and IgE polysensitization are associated and related to the persistence or re-occurrence of foetal type 2 signalling. Asthma, rhinitis and AD are manifestations of a common systemic immune imbalance (mesodermal origin) with specific patterns of remodelling (ectodermal or endodermal origin). This study proposes a new classification of IgE-mediated allergic diseases that allows the definition of novel phenotypes to (i) better understand genetic and epigenetic mechanisms, (ii) better stratify allergic preschool children for prognosis and (iii) propose novel strategies of treatment and prevention.

Abstract
Pulsar glitches are traditionally viewed as a manifestation of vortex dynamics associated with a neutron superfluid reservoir confined to the inner crust of the star. In this Letter we show that the nondissipative entrainment coupling between the neutron superfluid and the nuclear lattice leads to a less mobile crust superfluid, effectively reducing the moment of inertia associated with the angular momentum reservoir. Combining the latest observational data for prolific glitching pulsars with theoretical results for the crust entrainment, we find that the required superfluid reservoir exceeds that available in the crust. This challenges our understanding of the glitch phenomenon, and we discuss possible resolutions to the problem.

Abstract
We discuss a relativistic model for heat conduction, building on a convective variational approach to multi-fluid systems where the entropy is treated as a distinct dynamical entity. We demonstrate how this approach leads to a relativistic version of the Cattaneo equation, encoding the finite thermal relaxation time that is required to satisfy causality. We also show that the model naturally includes the non-equilibrium Gibbs relation that is a key ingredient in most approaches to extended thermodynamics. Focusing on the pure heat conduction problem, we compare the variational results with the second-order model developed by Israel and Stewart. The comparison shows that, despite the very different philosophies behind the two approaches, the two models are equivalent at first-order deviations from thermal equilibrium. Finally, we complete the picture by working out the non-relativistic limit of our results, making contact with recent work in that regime.

Context Regulation of fat mass appears to be associated with immune functions. Studies of knockout mice show that endogenous interleukin (IL)-6 can suppress mature-onset obesity. Objective To systematically investigate associations of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) near the IL-6 (IL6) and IL-6 receptor (IL6R) genes with body fat mass, in support for our hypothesis that variants of these genes can be associated with obesity. Design and Study Subjects The Gothenburg Osteoporosis and Obesity Determinants (GOOD) study is a population-based cross-sectional study of 18-20 years old men (n=1 049), from the Gothenburg area (Sweden). Major findings were confirmed in two additional cohorts consisting of elderly men from the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Sweden (n=2 851) and MrOS US (n=5 611) multicenter population-based studies. Main Outcome The genotype distributions and their association with fat mass in different compartments, measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Results Out of 18 evaluated tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) near the IL6 and IL6R genes, a recently identified SNP rs10242595 G/A [minor allele frequency (MAF) = 29%] 3′ of the IL6 gene was negatively associated with the primary outcome total body fat mass (effect size -0.11 standard deviation (SD) units/A allele, P=0.02). This negative association with fat mass was also confirmed in the combined MrOS Sweden and MrOS US cohorts (effect size -0.05 SD units/A allele; P=0.002). When all three cohorts were combined (n= 8 927, Caucasian subjects), rs10242595*A showed a negative association with total body fat mass (effect size -0.05 SD units/A allele, P<0.0002). Furthermore, the rs10242595*A was associated with low body mass index [(BMI, effect size -0.03, P<0.001)] and smaller regional fat masses. None of the other SNPs investigated in the GOOD study were reproducibly associated with body fat. Conclusions The IL6 gene polymorphism rs10242595*A is associated with decreased fat mass in three combined cohorts of 8 927 Caucasian men.

Abstract
We discuss heat conductivity from the point of view of a variational multi-fluid model, treating entropy as a dynamical entity. We demonstrate that a two-fluid model with a massive fluid component and a massless entropy can reproduce a number of key results from extended irreversible thermodynamics. In particular, we show that the entropy entrainment is intimately linked to the thermal-relaxation time that is required to make heat propagation in solids causal. We also discuss non-local terms that arise naturally in a dissipative multi-fluid model, and relate these terms to those of phonon hydrodynamics. Finally, we formulate a complete heat-conducting two-component model and discuss briefly the new dissipative terms that arise.

Abstract

Major findings were confirmed in elderly men (n=3014) from the Swedish part of the osteoporotic fractures in men (MrOS) multicenter population-based study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE The genotype distributions and their association with body fat mass in different compartments, measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). RESULTS Out of 15 investigated SNPs in the IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL1RN) gene, a recently identified 3' untranslated region C>T (rs4252041, minor allele frequency=4%) SNP was associated with the primary outcome total fat mass (P=0.003) and regional fat masses, but not with lean body mass or serum IL-1 receptor 1 (IL1RN) levels. This SNP was also associated with body fat when correcting the earlier reported IL1RN+2018 T>C (rs419598) SNP (in linkage disequilibrium with a well-studied variable number tandem repeat of 86 bp). The association between rs4252041 SNP and body fat was confirmed in the older MrOS population (P=0.03). The rs4252041 SNP was part of three haplotypes consisting of five adjacent SNPs that were identified by a sliding window approach. These haplotypes had a highly significant global association with total body fat (P<0.001). None of the other investigated members of the IL-1 gene family displayed any SNPs that have not been described previously to be significantly associated with body fat. CONCLUSIONS The IL1RN gene, shown to enhance obesity by suppressing IL-1 effects in experimental animals, have not [corrected] previously described gene polymorphisms and haplotypes that are associated with fat, but not lean mass in two populations of men.

Abstract
In vitro studies suggest that the membrane G protein-coupled receptor GPR30 is a functional estrogen receptor (ER). The aim of the present study was to determine the possible in vivo role of GPR30 as a functional ER primarily for the regulation of skeletal parameters, including bone mass and longitudinal bone growth, but also for some other well-known estrogen-regulated parameters, including uterine weight, thymus weight, and fat mass. Three-month-old ovariectomized (OVX) GPR30-deficient mice (GPR30(-/-)) and wild-type (WT) mice were treated with either vehicle or increasing doses of estradiol (E(2); 0, 30, 70, 160, or 830 ng.mouse(-1).day(-1)). Body composition [bone mineral density (BMD), fat mass, and lean mass] was analyzed by dual-energy-X ray absorptiometry, while the cortical and trabecular bone compartments were analyzed by peripheral quantitative computerized tomography. Quantitative histological analyses were performed in the distal femur growth plate. Bone marrow cellularity and distribution were analyzed using a fluorescence-activated cell sorter. The estrogenic responses on most of the investigated parameters, including increase in bone mass (total body BMD, spine BMD, trabecular BMD, and cortical bone thickness), increase in uterine weight, thymic atrophy, fat mass reduction, and increase in bone marrow cellularity, were similar for all of the investigated E(2) doses in WT and GPR30(-/-) mice. On the other hand, E(2) treatment reduced longitudinal bone growth, reflected by decreased femur length and distal femur growth plate height, in the WT mice but not in the GPR30(-/-) mice compared with vehicle-treated mice. These in vivo findings demonstrate that GPR30 is not required for normal estrogenic responses on several major well-known estrogen-regulated parameters. In contrast, GPR30 is required for a normal estrogenic response in the growth plate.

Abstract
A systematic review of published articles was performed to identify risk factors associated with recent transmission of tuberculosis (TB). The computerized search identified studies in PubMed, Ovid, CDSR, CINAHL and EMBASE published between 1994 and 2005. Of 137 articles, 30 satisfied all the inclusion criteria for meta-analysis. A random effects model estimated the odds ratio (OR), confidence interval (CI), and heterogeneity between studies. Recent transmission of TB was associated with: ethnic minority (OR 3.03, 95%CI 2.21- 4.16), being a native of the country (OR 2.33, 95%CI 1.76-3.08), residing in an urban area (OR 1.52, 95%CI 1.35-1.72), drug use (OR 3.01, 95%CI 2.14-4.22), excessive alcohol consumption (OR 2.27, 95%CI 1.69-3.06), homelessness (OR 2.87, 95%CI 2.04-4.02), previous incarceration (OR 2.21, 95%CI 1.71-2.86), human immunodeficiency virus infection/acquired immune-deficiency syndrome (OR 1.66, 95%CI 1.36-2.05), young age (OR 2.09, 95%CI 1.69-2.59), sputum smear positivity (OR 1.39, 95%CI 1.20-1.60) and male sex (OR 1.37, 95%CI 1.19-1.58). The results should be useful for improving prevention and control strategies, thus contributing to a reduction in Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission.

Abstract
We discuss a new superfluid instability occurring in the interior of mature neutron stars with implications for free precession. This instability is similar to the instability which is responsible for the formation of turbulence in superfluid helium. We demonstrate that the instability is unlikely to affect slowly precessing systems with weak superfluid coupling. In contrast, fast precession in systems with strong coupling appears to be generically unstable. This raises serious questions about our understanding of neutron star precession and complicates attempts to constrain neutron star interiors using such observations.

Abstract
We estimate the maximal deformation that can be sustained by a rotating neutron star with a crystalline color-superconducting quark core. Our results suggest that current gravitational-wave data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory have already reached the level where a detection would have been possible over a wide range of the poorly constrained QCD parameters. This leads to the nontrivial conclusion that compact objects do not contain maximally strained color crystalline cores drawn from this range of parameter space. We discuss the uncertainties associated with our simple model and how it can be improved in the future.

Abstract
Estrogen has bone protective effects, but the exact mechanism behind these effects remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to identify the primary target cells in bone for the classical genomic effects of estrogens in vivo. For this purpose we have used reporter mice with a luciferase gene under the control of three estrogen-responsive elements (EREs), enabling detection of in vivo activation of gene transcription. Three-month-old ovariectomized mice were treated with a single dose (50 mug/kg) 17beta-estradiol (E2). Luciferase activity was analyzed in several tissues and in different bone marrow-derived lymphocyte enriched/depleted preparations using MacsMouse CD19 (for B lymphocytes) or CD90 (for T lymphocytes) MicroBeads (Miltenyi Biotec GmbH, Bergisch Gladbach, Germany). Histological characterization of cells with high luciferase content was performed using immunohistochemistry. Both cortical bone and bone marrow displayed a rapid (within 1 h) and pronounced E2-induced increase in luciferase activity. The luciferase activity in total bone marrow and in bone marrow depleted of lymphocytes was increased six to eight times more than in either B-lymphocyte or T-lymphocyte enriched cell fractions 4 h after the E2 injection, demonstrating that mature lymphocytes are not major direct targets for the genomic effect of estrogens in bone. Immunohistochemistry identified clear luciferase staining in hypertrophic growth plate chondrocytes, megakaryocytes, osteoblasts, and lining cells, whereas no staining was seen in proliferative chondrocyte. Although most of the osteocytes did not display any detectable luciferase staining, a subpopulation of osteocytes both in cortical and trabecular bone stained positive for luciferase. In conclusion, hypertrophic growth plate chondrocytes, megakaryocytes, osteoblasts, lining cells, and a subpopulation of osteocytes were identified to respond to estrogen via the classical ERE-mediated genomic pathway in bone. Furthermore, our findings indicate that possible direct estrogenic effects on the majority of osteocytes, not staining positive for luciferase, on proliferative chondrocytes and on mature lymphocytes are mediated by non-ERE actions.

Abstract
CONTEXT SHBG regulates free sex steroid levels, which in turn regulate skeletal homeostasis. Twin studies have demonstrated that genetic factors largely account for interindividual variation in SHBG levels. Glucuronidated androgen metabolites have been proposed as markers of androgenic activity. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to investigate whether polymorphisms in the SHBG gene promoter [(TAAAA)(n) microsatellite and rs1799941 single-nucleotide polymorphism] are associated with serum levels of SHBG, sex steroids, or bone mineral density (BMD) in men. DESIGN AND STUDY SUBJECTS We conducted a population-based study of two cohorts of Swedish men: elderly men (MrOS Sweden; n congruent with 3000; average age, 75.4 yr) and young adult men (GOOD study; n = 1068; average age, 18.9 yr). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES We measured serum levels of SHBG, testosterone, estradiol, dihydrotestosterone, 5alpha-androstane-3alpha,17beta-diol glucuronides, androsterone glucuronide, and BMD determined by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS In both cohorts, (TAAAA)(n) and rs1799941 genotypes were associated with serum levels of SHBG (P < 0.001), dihydrotestosterone (P < 0.05), and 5alpha-androstane-3alpha,17beta-diol glucuronides (P < 0.05). In the elderly men, they were also associated with testosterone and BMD at all hip bone sites. The genotype associated with high levels of SHBG was also associated with high BMD. Interestingly, male mice overexpressing human SHBG had increased cortical bone mineral content in the femur, suggesting that elevated SHBG levels may cause increased bone mass. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrate that polymorphisms in the SHBG promoter predict serum levels of SHBG, androgens, and glucuronidated androgen metabolites, and hip BMD in men.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Estrogen deficiency results in trabecular bone loss, associated with T-cell proliferation in the bone marrow. Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) is involved in the regulation of both bone metabolism and lymphopoiesis. A major part of serum IGF-I is derived from the liver. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of liver-derived IGF-I for ovariectomy (ovx)-induced trabecular bone loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS Mice with adult liver-specific IGF-I inactivation (LI-IGF-I-/-) and wild type mice (WT) were either ovx or sham operated. After 5 weeks, the skeletal phenotype was analyzed by pQCT and microCT. The bone marrow cellularity was analyzed using FACS technique, and mRNA levels were quantified using real-time PCR. RESULTS Ovx resulted in a pronounced reduction in trabecular bone mineral density (-52%, P < 0.001), number (-45%, P < 0.01) and thickness (-13%, P < 0.01) in WT mice while these bone parameters were unaffected by ovx in LI-IGF-I-/- mice. Furthermore, ovx increased the number of T-cells in the bone marrow of the femur in WT but not in LI-IGF-I-/- mice. Interleukin 7 (IL-7) has been reported to stimulate the formation and function of osteoclasts by inducing the expression of receptor activator of NF-kappaB ligand (RANKL) on T-cells. IL-7 mRNA levels and the RANKL/osteoprotegerin ratio in bone were increased by ovx in WT but not in LI-IGF-I-/- mice. CONCLUSIONS Liver-derived IGF-I is permissive for ovx-induced trabecular bone loss. Our studies indicate that IGF-I might exert this permissive action by modulation of the number of T-cells and the expression of IL-7, which in turn is of importance for the RANKL/OPG ratio and consequently osteoclastogenesis in the bone marrow.

Abstract
BACKGROUND B waves, slow and rhythmic oscillations in intracranial pressure (ICP), are claimed to be one of the best predictors of outcome after surgery for normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). OBJECT To determine the relation between the percentage of B waves and outcome in patients with hydrocephalus, and also the diurnal variation of B waves. METHODS ICP and patient behaviour were recorded overnight (17 to 26 hours) in 29 patients with non-communicating hydrocephalus and 26 with NPH. The B wave activity, measured with an amplitude threshold of 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, and 5.0 mm Hg, was estimated as the percentage of total monitoring time (% B waves) using a computer algorithm, and correlated with postoperative outcome, defined as changes in 12 standardised symptoms and signs. RESULTS There was no linear correlation between improvement after surgery in the 55 patients and total % B waves, but a correlation was found between improvement and % B waves during sleep (r = 0.39, p = 0.04). The percentage of B waves was the same during sleep and wakefulness, and patients with NPH had the same proportion of B waves as the non-communicating patients. CONCLUSIONS B waves are commonly observed in patients with both communicating and non-communicating hydrocephalus, but are only weakly related to the degree of postsurgical improvement.

Abstract
UNLABELLED To determine the long-term role of ER beta in the regulation of longitudinal bone growth, appendicular and axial skeletal growth was followed and compared in female ER beta-/-, ER alpha-/-, and ER alpha-/- beta-/- mice. Our results show that ER beta inhibits appendicular and axial skeletal growth and has the capacity to induce fusion of the growth plates. INTRODUCTION Estrogen affects skeletal growth and promotes growth plate fusion in humans. In rodents, the growth plates do not fuse after sexual maturation, but prolonged treatment with supraphysiological levels of estradiol has the capacity to fuse the growth plates. It should be emphasized that the estrogen receptor (ER) alpha-/- and the ER alpha-/- beta-/-, but not the ER beta-/-, mouse models have clearly increased serum levels of estradiol. MATERIALS AND METHODS The skeletal growth was monitored by X-ray and dynamic histomorphometry, and the growth plates were analyzed by quantitative histology, calcein double labeling, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation, and TUNEL assay in 4- and 18-month-old female ER beta-/-, ER alpha-/-, and ER alpha-/- beta-/- mice. RESULTS Young adult (4-month-old) ER beta-/- mice demonstrated an increased axial- and appendicular-skeletal growth, supporting the notion that ER beta inhibits skeletal growth in young adult female mice. Interestingly, the growth plates were consistently fused in the appendicular skeleton of 18-month-old female ER alpha-/- mice. This fusion of growth plates, caused by a prolonged exposure to supraphysiological levels of estradiol in female ER alpha-/- mice, must be mediated through ER beta because old ER alpah-/- beta-/- mice displayed unchanged, unfused growth plates. CONCLUSIONS Our results confirm that ER beta is a physiological inhibitor of appendicular- and axial-skeletal growth in young adult female mice. Furthermore, we made the novel observation that ER beta, after prolonged supraphysiological estradiol exposure, has the capacity to mediate growth plate fusion in old female mice.

Abstract
Mature neutron stars are expected to have several superfluid components. Strong evidence for this is provided by the glitches that have been observed in dozens of pulsars. We describe a superfluid analog of the two-stream instability that is well known in plasma physics and provide arguments that this instability is likely to be relevant for neutron stars. This is a new physical mechanism which may play a key role in explaining the glitch mechanism and which could also prove to be relevant in laboratory experiments on various superfluid systems.

Abstract
Both ovariectomy (Ovx) and gastrectomy (Gx) induce osteopaenia in rats and humans. While the effect of Ovx has been ascribed to oestrogen deficiency, the underlying mechanism behind Gx is poorly understood. Alendronate, oestrogen and parathyroid hormone (PTH) are known to prevent the osteopaenia induced by Ovx in rats. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether alendronate, oestrogen or PTH could also prevent Gx-evoked osteopaenia. Rats were Ovx-, Gx-, or were sham-operated (Sham) and were then treated with alendronate (50 micro g/kg/day), oestrogen (10 micro g/kg/day) or PTH(1-84) (75 micro g/kg/day) for eight weeks. At sacrifice, serum PTH was unaffected by surgery (Ovx, 64+/-8 pg/ml; Gx, 75+/-13 pg/ml; Sham, 58+/-11 pg/ml). The bone mineral density (BMD) of the fifth lumbar vertebra (L5) was analysed. Ovx and Gx reduced the BMD (ash weight/Volume) of the L5 by 15+/-4% and 22+/-3% respectively. Trabecular BMD and the cortical bone mineral content (BMC) of the femur were assessed using peripheral computed tomography. Both Ovx and Gx markedly reduced trabecular BMD in the metaphyseal area of the distal femur (Ovx, -37+/-7%; Gx, -49+/-7%). The cortical BMC of the femur was only slightly reduced. Alendronate prevented trabecular bone loss after both Ovx and Gx, while oestrogen and PTH prevented trabecular bone loss after Ovx but not after Gx. In conclusion, the bisphosphonate alendronate prevented both Ovx- and Gx-induced trabecular bone loss. In contrast, PTH and oestrogen prevented Ovx-induced but not Gx-induced trabecular bone loss, suggesting that the mechanism behind the trabecular bone loss in Ovx rats differs from that in Gx rats. The results support the notion that the mechanism of action for the bone-sparing effect of these drugs differs. The ability of alendronate, and probably also other bisphosphonates, to prevent Gx-evoked osteopaenia in the rat might be of potential clinical interest when dealing with post-Gx osteopaenia in humans.

Abstract
Estrogen exerts a variety of important physiological effects, which have been suggested to be mediated via the two known estrogen receptors (ERs), alpha and beta. Three-month-old ovariectomized mice, lacking one or both of the two estrogen receptors, were given estrogen subcutaneously (2.3 micro g/mouse per day) and the effects on different estrogen-responsive parameters, including skeletal effects, were studied. We found that estrogen increased the cortical bone dimensions in both wild-type (WT) and double ER knockout (DERKO) mice. DNA microarray analysis was performed to characterize this effect on cortical bone and it identified four genes that were regulated by estrogen in both WT and DERKO mice. The effect of estrogen on cortical bone in DERKO mice might either be due to remaining ERalpha activity or represent an ERalpha/ERbeta-independent effect. Other effects of estrogen, such as increased trabecular bone mineral density, thymic atrophy, fat reduction and increased uterine weight, were mainly ERalpha mediated.

Abstract
We discuss the possibility that future gravitational-wave detectors may be able to detect various modes of oscillation of old, cold neutron stars. We argue that such detections would provide unique insights into the superfluid nature of neutron-star cores, and could also lead to a much improved understanding of pulsar glitches. Our estimates are based on a detector configuration with several narrow-band (cryogenic) interferometers operating as a "xylophone" which could lead to high sensitivity at high frequencies. We also draw on recent advances in our understanding of the dynamics of pulsating superfluid neutron-star cores.

Abstract
Osteopenia develops in experimental animals following surgical removal of the ovaries (ovariectomy. Ovx) or the stomach (gastrectomy, Gx). Though the effect of Ovx has been ascribed to estrogen deficiency, the mechanism behind the Gx-evoked osteopenia remains unknown. In order to compare Gx- and Ovx-evoked osteopenia, young female rats were subjected to Ovx, gx, the combination of ovx and Gx, or sham operation (SHAM). Serum osteoclast-derived tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b was measured as an index of bone resorption, and serum osteocalcin as an index of bone formation/turnover. Bone resorption predominated over bone formation during the first 4 days after Ovx but not later. Bone resorption predominated over bone formation throughout the first 4-week period after Gx. the changes were not additive in the ovx+Gx group. Transillumination and histomorphometry of the calvariae revealed extensive osteopenia in the Gx and the Ovx+Gx groups but not in the Ovx group. Peripheral quantitative computerized tomography of the femur metaphysis showed a decrease in the trabecular bone mineral density (BMD) in all three groups although Ovx+Gx seemed to induce greater trabecular bone loss than Gx alone. However, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the intact femurs revealed reduced bone mineral content (BMC) in the Gx and Ovx+Gx groups but not in the Ovx group. Indeed, cortical bone was impaired by Gx and Ovx+Gx but not by Ovx. Hence, it seems clear that the Gx-evoked osteopenia differs from that induced by Ovx but that the osteopenia induced by Ovx+Gx is only marginally greater than that induced by Gx alone.

Abstract
Rat models of osteopenia include ovariectomy and long-term glucocorticoid treatment. Although ovariectomy produces significant trabecular bone loss after 2 weeks, long-term glucocorticoid treatment has been reported to cause osteopenia in some studies but not in others. In the present 8-week-study, we compared the osteopenia associated with gastrectomy (GX) to that induced by ovariectomy (OVX) or prednisolone (PRE) treatment. Female Sprague-Dawley rats (10 weeks old) were subjected to GX, OVX, PRE treatment or SHAM operation. At the end of the study, calvariae, femurs and fifth lumbar vertebrae (L5) were collected and subjected to bone density measurement (femur and L5), transillumination (calvaria) and histomorphometry (calvaria and femur). Bone density was reduced in L5 and the distal femur in the OVX and GX groups, but not in the PRE group. Transillumination of the calvaria showed marked bone loss in the GX rats, but not in the other groups. Morphometric analysis of the femur revealed reduced trabecular bone volume, trabecular thickness, trabecular number and osteoclast number, but increased osteoclast surface (expressed as per cent of the trabecular bone surface covered by osteoclasts) in the GX and OVX rats. The PRE rats seemed unaffected. Cortical thickness was reduced in the GX rats, but not in the other groups. The findings indicate that GX induces osteopenia in, e.g., femur and vertebra of a magnitude similar to or greater than that induced by OVX, while at the same time inducing osteopenia in the calvaria. Although osteoclast activation seems to contribute, the precise mechanism underlying the GX-evoked osteopenia remains obscure.
