Abstract
The strong demand for biological materials in the food industry places chitosan at the forefront of other biopolymers. The present study aims to evaluate the antifungal properties of chitosan extracted from shrimp shell waste (Parapenaeus longirostris) against post-harvest strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) spoilage fungi. The physicochemical characteristics (DD, Mw, and solubility) of extracted chitosan were determined. In addition, functional characteristics were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The antifungal effect of chitosan on mycelial growth and spore germination of Aspergillus niger, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum, and Rhizopus stolonifer was evaluated. Yield, degree of deacetylation, molecular weight, and solubility were 21.86%, 83.50%, 180 kDa, and 80.10%, respectively. A degree of deacetylation of 81.27% was calculated from the FTIR spectrum and a crystallinity index of 79.83% was determined from the X-ray diffraction pattern. SEM images of extracted chitosan showed a combination of fibrous and porous structure. At 3% chitosan, mycelial growth inhibition rates of A. niger, B. cinerea, F. oxysporum, and R. stolonifer ranged from 81.37% to 92.70%. At the same chitosan concentration, the percentages of spore germination inhibition of the isolated fungi ranged from 65.47% to 71.48%. The antifungal activity was highly dose-dependent. As a natural polymer, chitosan offers a convincing alternative to synthetic antimicrobials for the post-harvest preservation of strawberries. Its potential lies in its ability to inhibit the growth of spoilage fungi.

Abstract
Lignin and Casparian strips are two essential components of plant cells that play critical roles in plant development regulate nutrients and water across the plants cell. Recent studies have extensively investigated lignin diversity and Casparian strip formation, providing valuable insights into plant physiology. This review presents the established lignin biosynthesis pathway, as well as the developmental patterns of lignin and Casparian strip and transcriptional network associated with Casparian strip formation. It describes the biochemical and genetic mechanisms that regulate lignin biosynthesis and deposition in different plants cell types and tissues. Additionally, the review highlights recent studies that have uncovered novel lignin biosynthesis genes and enzymatic pathways, expanding our understanding of lignin diversity. This review also discusses the developmental patterns of Casparian strip in roots and their role in regulating nutrient and water transport, focusing on recent genetic and molecular studies that have identified regulators of Casparian strip formation. Previous research has shown that lignin biosynthesis genes also play a role in Casparian strip formation, suggesting that these processes are interconnected. In conclusion, this comprehensive overview provides insights into the developmental patterns of lignin diversity and Casparian strip as apoplastic barriers. It also identifies future research directions, including the functional characterization of novel lignin biosynthesis genes and the identification of additional regulators of Casparian strip formation. Overall, this review enhances our understanding of the complex and interconnected processes that drive plant growth, pathogen defense, regulation and development.

Abstract
Nitrogen (N) is one of the most crucial elements for plant growth. However, a deficiency of N affects plant growth and development. Wedelia trilobata is a notorious invasive plant species that exhibits superior tolerance to adapt to environmental stresses. Yet, research on the growth and antioxidant defensive system of invasive Wedelia under low N stress, which could contribute to understanding invasion mechanisms, is still limited. Therefore, this study aims to investigate and compare the tolerance capability of invasive and native Wedelia under low and normal N conditions. Native and invasive Wedelia species were grown in normal and low-N conditions using a hydroponic nutrient solution for 8 weeks to assess the photosynthetic parameters, antioxidant activity, and localization of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The growth and biomass of W. trilobata were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than W. chinensis under low N. The leaves of W. trilobata resulted in a significant increase in chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll content by 40.2, 56.2, and 46%, respectively, compared with W. chinensis. W. trilobata significantly enhanced antioxidant defense systems through catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase by 18.6%, 20%, and 36.3%, respectively, providing a positive response to oxidative stress caused by low N. The PCA analysis showed that W. trilobata was 95.3% correlated with physiological traits by Dim1 (79.1%) and Dim2 (16.3%). This study provides positive feedback on W. trilobata with respect to its comprehensive invasion mechanism to improve agricultural systems via eco-friendly approaches in N deficit conditions, thereby contributing to the reclamation of barren land.

Abstract
Lignin valorization to produce functionalized materials is challenging. This study harnessed the versatile properties of lignin through a grafting reaction involving the aryl hydroxyl group of alkali lignin (AL) and enzymatically modified-alkali lignin (EMAL) using Bacillus ligninphilus-derived laccase (Lacc) L1 and C. seriivinvornas-derived dye-decolorizing peroxidase (DyP) with keratin (K) amide group. This reaction was executed utilizing an eco-friendly solvent with the aim of generating thin films. A thorough investigation was conducted, focusing on grafting AL and EMAL onto K. The incorporation of EMAL into the films enhanced tensile strength (TS) (14.8±1.8 MPa) and elongation at break (EAB) (23.7±0.3 %). Additionally, it enhanced thermal stability, suppressed the proliferation of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), and mitigated oxidative stress. This study introduces a novel approach for lignin valorization, offering the potential to tailor mechanical properties, antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the final material, making it sustainable substitute for petroleum-based products.

Abstract
A fiber optic bolometer (FOB) was demonstrated observing a fusion plasma for the first time at the DIII-D tokamak. A FOB uses a fiber optics-based interferometric technique that is designed to have a high sensitivity to temperature changes [75 mK/(W/m2) responsivity in high vacuum with 0.38 mK noise level] with a negligible susceptibility to electromagnetic interference (EMI) that can be problematic for resistive bolometers in a tokamak environment. A single-channel test apparatus was installed on DIII-D consisting of a measurement FOB and shielded reference FOB. The single-channel FOB showed a negligible increase in the noise level during typical plasma operations (0.39 mK) compared to the benchtop results (0.38 mK), confirming an insignificant EMI impact to the FOB. Comparisons to DIII-D resistive bolometers showed good agreement with the single-channel FOB, indicating that the FOB is comparable to a resistive bolometer when the impulse calibration is applied. The noise-equivalent power density of the calibrated FOB during a plasma operation was 0.55 W/m2 with an average sampling time of 20 ms. The major potential effect of ionizing radiation on the FOB would be the radiation-induced attenuation, which can be efficiently compensated for by adjusting the probing light power.

Abstract
Polyploidization has played a major role in plant evolution and can alter plant morphology, phenology, and ecology within only one or a few generations. Ziziphus species are economically as well as nutritionally important fruit-yielding trees. Identification of genotypes with unique traits or those with higher ploidy levels or a broader genetic base could lead to further improvements within the species. The current study has assessed the ploidy levels in the Ziziphus species (Ziziphus jujuba Mill. and Ziziphus nummularia (Burm. f. Wight & Arn) with phenotypic traits, flow cytometry, and chromosomal count as well as with SSRs markers. Morphological traits were inferred to be the most important drivers of trait variations among the investigated genotypes. The total sugar, total cAMPs, titratable acid, and chlorophyll (a, b, and total) were also significantly different in contrast with diploid plants, which showed that tetraploid Ziziphus had the potential to increase nutritional contents. Out of twenty (20), five (5) Z. jujuba genotypes (ZJL-9, ZJL-12, ZJL-17, ZJL-18, and ZJL-19) were found tetraploid 2n = 4x = 48, with genome size ranging from 965.9 to1238.8 Mb that was significantly higher than the tetraploid Z. jujuba Mill. variety Dongzao. Similarly, Z. nummularia ZNL-07 to ZNL-15 have found tetraploid 2n = 4x = 72 with genomic sizes ranging from 1152.2 to 1746.8 Mb respectively. Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) marker was applied to assess the genetic relationship within Ziziphus genotypes. To the best of our understanding, this is the first report on the identification of naturalized random tetraploids within the Pakistani Ziziphus species. This study provides important insights into the genomic architecture of Ziziphus species with implications for classification, conservation, and improvements of Ziziphus germplasm resources.

Abstract
Ziziphus fruits have attracted much attention within the field of medicine due to their high potential against central nervous system disorders. Abundance of secondary metabolites and their composition is key to the pharmaceutical potential and commercial qualities of plants. The in vitro antioxidant activities of Ziziphus nummularia (Burm. f.) and Ziziphus oxyphylla Edgew fruit extract were analyzed using 2,2‐diphenil‐1‐pycrilhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′‐azino‐bis (3‐ethylbenzothiazoline)‐6‐sulfonic acid (ABTS) free radical scavenging assay methods. Phenolic profiles were explored using high‐performance liquid chromatography‐diode array detector (HPLC‐DAD). The result revealed high concentration of polyphenols and their antioxidant potential. In Z. nummularia, the total phenolic content (TPC) (80.270 ± 0.422 μg/ml), DPPH (62.03 ± 0.98 μg/ml), ABTS (66.32 ± 0.73 μg/ml), and TFC (90.683 ± 0.274 μg/ml) were recorded. However, in Z. oxyphylla, DPPH and ABTS values were 60.66 ± 0.56 μg/ml and 61.55 ± 0.77 μg/ml, respectively, indicative of the impacts of climate and soil nutrients. The overall screening of phytochemicals revealed that both the Ziziphus species contain diverse bioactive compounds, including spinacetine‐3‐O‐(2 feruloyl glucopyranosyl)‐glucopyranoside, kaempferol‐3‐O‐glucoside‐7‐O‐glucoside, and caffeic acid; p‐hydroxybenzoyl hexose, p‐coumaric acid, salicylic acid, and ellagic acid pentoxide. Additionally, the highest concentrated amino acid noted was of Lue 0.19 g/100 g with 596.00 retention time (RT), followed by Thr>Ale>Isl>Phya>Val in Z. nummularia. Similarly, the highest concentration of Lue amino acid was recorded as 0.18/100 g with 564.52 RT followed by Pr>Thr>Ale>Lue>Isl>Phya>Val in all genotypes of Z. oxyphylla. Reporting of polyphenols rich and stable species along with identification of favorable regions of cultivation for amino acid, polyphenols, and higher antioxidant potential may lead the way for the identification of elite clones of the species as well as may result in new drug discovery.

Abstract
Ziziphus nummularia is an important source of valuable phytoconstituents, which are widely used in traditional medicine system of Indo-Pak sub-continent. In this study we investigated the distribution of phenolic compounds in the fruit pericarps of six different genotypes (ZNP01-06) of Z. nummularia growing in the unexplored hilly areas of Pakistan. The methanolic extracts of these genotypes were screened for total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant, and cholinesterase inhibitory potentials. The observed biological potentials were explained in terms of the outcome of molecular docking and HPLC analyses. Among them, genotype ZNP02 displayed high TPC (88.50 ± 1.23 μg/mL) and showed potent scavenging activity against DPPH (67.03 ± 1.04 μg/mL) and ABTS (65.3 ± 1.74 μg/mL) in comparison to ascorbic acid (68.7 ± 0.47 μg/mL). Moreover, genotypes ZNP01, ZNP02, and ZNP04 displayed potent inhibition against acetyl and butyryl cholinesterases (AChE and BChE) with IC50 values of 21.2, 20.5, and 23.7 μg/mL (AChE) and 22.7, 24.4, and 33.1 μg/mL (BChE), respectively. Furthermore, the individual compounds in the most potent species ZNP01 responsible for potent enzyme inhibition (identified through HPLC-UV analysis), were computed via docking simulation software to the enzyme structures. Among these compounds rutin exhibited significant binding affinity with value of -9.20 kcal/mol. The differences amongst the phytochemical compositions of the selected genotypes highlighted the genotypic variations in them. Based on our results it was concluded that the selected plant can be used as remedy of oxidative stress and neurodegenerative diseases. However, further studies are needed to isolate responsible compounds and test the observed potential in vivo, along with toxicological evaluations in animal models.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study contributes to the current ethnomedicinal knowledge of the Swat Valley, Pakistan. District Swat possesses remarkable biodiversity owing to its varied topographical and climatic conditions, prompting a distinct human-plant association. Our hypothesis is that the presence of such a great biodiversity has shaped into a formal ethnobotanical culture in the area transmitted through generations. We suspect that the versatility of some plant species has greater influence on the culture. Therefore, the prime objective of the study is to understand this unique human-plant relationship in the valley and to create scientific roots for the selection and practice of herbs in the ethnobotanical domain of the district. METHODS Primary data were collected using questionnaires and face-to-face interviews with the locals. The data collected were used for calculating some important indices, i.e. relative frequency of citation (RFC), participant agreement ratio (PAR), frequency of citation (FC), Smith's Salience Index (SI), Relative Importance Index (RII), Cultural Value Index (CVI) and a newly proposed, Ali's Conservation Priority Index (CPI). Index scores were used as key identifier of the ethnobotanically important plants of the area. RESULTS Residents of the Swat Valley have listed plant uses in 15 use categories. Around 9% of the respondents have a common consensus on the selection and use of plants for the treatment of evil eye with similar results for body cuts (8.2%) followed by psychological/neural ailments (8.0%). Respondents agree that Berberis lyceum Royle. dominates in all five indices. Skimmia laureola Franch. also constitutes one of the central plants of the ethnobotanical domain, ranking second in the SI, fifth in the RII, seventh in CVI, and third in the Cultural Importance Index. It holds the thirty-fifth position in the CPI. Over 80% of the population treat different diseases with herbal remedies. In the common ethnobotanical domain of the area, plants like Mentha longifolia L., Berberis lyceum, and Skimmia laureola are very important and have high salience and importance values, thus suggesting these plants are versatile for their uses in the study area. CONCLUSION In conclusion, only some plant species are prioritised for their use in the ethnobotanical domain of the community. Medicinal and aromatic plant (MAP) usage is widespread in the Swat Valley. The ethnobotanical knowledge could be used as a tool to understand the adaptability of a specific taxon in the area and the possible conservation risk to their existence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abnormal vocal cord movements can cause laryngeal extrathoracic airway obstruction (often called vocal cord dysfunction - VCD) leading to asthma-like symptoms. These aberrant movements are characteristically present during inspiration and termed paradoxical vocal cord movement (PVCM). We have reported PVCM in up to 40% of severe asthmatics, but it is not known if PVCM is detectable in all patients with asthma-like symptoms and if the condition is more often associated with abnormal lung function. OBJECTIVE We hypothesized that PVCM is frequently associated with asthma symptoms accompanied by airflow limitation. Studies examined whether PVCM is solely linked to experiencing asthma symptoms, or if PVCM is related to airflow limitation and/or other disease characteristics. METHODS Patients with asthma symptoms were recruited from general practice and severe asthma clinics (n = 155). Pulmonary function measurements were conducted, asthma control and Nijmegen (dysfunctional breathing) questionnaires were administered and skin prick testing was carried out. PVCM was quantified using dynamic 320-slice computerized tomography of the larynx. Groups were divided into patients with FEV1 ≥ 80% predicted or FEV1 < 80% predicted and FEV1 /FVC < 0.7. ATS/ERS definitions of severity were also applied and evaluated. Detection of PVCM in the groups was compared and analyses performed to identify features associated with PVCM. RESULTS Overall (n = 155), PVCM was detected in 42 cases (27.1%). Patients with FEV1 < 80% predicted had PVCM more often (25/68, 36.8%) than individuals with normal spirometry (17/87, 19.5%; P = 0.016). PVCM was associated with older age (P = 0.003) and with Nijmegen scores > 20 (P = 0.04). Patients with FEV1 < 80% predicted plus Nijmegen scores > 20 were more likely to have PVCM (OR = 9.3, P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Paradoxical vocal cord movement is more often associated with asthma symptoms accompanied by airflow limitation and dysfunctional breathing. Further studies are needed to determine whether PVCM is induced by dysfunctional breathing practices and/or airway obstruction. How PVCM links with symptomatic asthma and VCD also requires evaluation.

Abstract
Despite ionizing radiation (IR) is being widely used as a standard treatment for lung cancer, many evidences suggest that IR paradoxically promotes cancer malignancy. However, its molecular mechanisms underlying radiation-induced cancer progression remain obscure. Here, we report that exposure to fractionated radiation (2 Gy per day for 3 days) induces the secretion of granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) that has been commonly used in cancer therapies to ameliorate neutropenia. Intriguingly, radiation-induced G-CSF promoted the migratory and invasive properties by triggering the epithelial-mesenchymal cell transition (EMT) in non-small-cell lung cancer cells (NSCLCs). By irradiation, G-CSF was upregulated transcriptionally by β-catenin/TCF4 complex that binds to the promoter region of G-CSF as a transcription factor. Importantly, irradiation increased the stability of β-catenin through the activation of PI3K/AKT (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/AKT), thereby upregulating the expression of G-CSF. Radiation-induced G-CSF is recognized by G-CSFR and transduced its intracellular signaling JAK/STAT3 (Janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription), thereby triggering EMT program in NSCLCs. Taken together, our findings suggest that the application of G-CSF in cancer therapies to ameliorate neutropenia should be reconsidered owing to its effect on cancer progression, and G-CSF could be a novel therapeutic target to mitigate the harmful effect of radiotherapy for the treatment of NSCLC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential role of fludeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET)/CT in the detection of bone/bone marrow disease in patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL). METHODS We retrospectively reviewed ((18)F)-FDG-PET/CT scans of 122 newly diagnosed, biopsy-proven cases of HL performed between November 2009 and June 2010. All the patients were staged before treatment by both PET/CT and bone marrow biopsy (BMB). Patients were subdivided into three groups based on the findings of FDG-PET/CT. Group A consisted of patients showing diffuse FDG uptake, Group B consisted of patients showing unifocal FDG uptake and Group C patients showed multifocal FDG-avid foci on PET/CT scans. Bone marrow results were also reviewed and considered positive if lymphomatous involvement was detected on bone marrow trephine biopsy. BMB results were correlated with FDG-PET/CT findings. RESULTS There were 122 patients in total-81 (66.4%) were male and 41 (33.6%) were female. The age range was from 6 years to 78 years (mean 35.70 years). PET/CT was reported as negative for bone/bone marrow involvement in 85 (69.7%) patients, while the remaining 37 showed abnormal FDG uptake. The sensitivity of FDG-PET/CT was calculated to be 100%, the specificity was 76.57%, the negative predictive value was 76.57%, the positive predictive value was 29.72% and the diagnostic accuracy was 78.62%. CONCLUSION (18)F-FDG-PET/CT and BMB are complementary in the evaluation of bone marrow disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Asia, from 1998 to 2002, the highest annual-age standardized incidence rates of breast cancer per 100,000 women were recorded as follows: in the Karachi South district of Pakistan 69.0 and in the Israeli Jews 96.8. At Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center in Lahore, Pakistan, in 15-years from Dec. 1995-Dec. 2009, among adult females, approximately 46% (8,915) of malignancies were recorded as breast tumors. Further, according to Pakistan's population estimates (2009), the total population of the country is 177 million; females 85 million (40-69 years: 13.6 million). DISCUSSION Screening of asymptomatic women: Basing the recommendations on biennial mammograhic screening for average-risk women in the 40-69 year age-band, about 6.8 million women will have to be screened every year. In a resource-constrained country like Pakistan, early detection by this method is not possible. As most symptomatic women present with advanced disease, clinicians skilled in breast diseases are required. The Australasian Society of Breast Physicians has developed a formal three year training model for General Practitioners to qualify as breast physicians by: i) developing their skills in the areas of clinical breast-examination, interpretation of mammography and breast ultrasound; performance of image-guided interventional procedures; counseling of and planning/coordinating treatment of females with breast cancer and assessment/monitoring of women at potentially 'high-risk' of cancer; and ii) working in consultation with surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists, and other members of the multidisciplinary team. SUMMARY Easily accessible one-stop breast clinics staffed by trained breast physicians can help reduce morbidity/mortality from breast cancer in developing countries, and improve the quality of life and survival.

Abstract
Many species of bacteria pathogenic to humans, such as Legionella, are thought to have evolved in association with amoebal hosts. Several novel unculturable bacteria related to Legionella have also been found in amoebae, a few of which have been thought to be causes of nosocomial infections in humans. Because amoebae can be found in cooling towers, we wanted to know whether cooling tower environments might enhance the association between amoebae and bacterial pathogens of amoebae in order to identify potential "hot spots" for emerging human pathogens. To compare occurrence of infected amoebae in natural environments with those in cooling towers, 40 natural aquatic environments and 40 cooling tower samples were examined. Logistic regression analysis determined variables that were significant predictors of the occurrence of infected amoebae, which were found in 22 of 40 cooling tower samples but in only 3 of the 40 natural samples. An odds ratio showed that it is over 16 times more likely to encounter infected amoebae in cooling towers than in natural environments. Environmental data from cooling towers and natural habitats combined revealed dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and pH were predictors of the occurrence of the pathogens, however, when cooling tower data alone were analyzed, no variables accounted for the occurrence. Several bacteria have novel rRNA sequences, and most strains were not culturable outside of amoebae. Such pathogens of amoebae may spread to the environment via aerosols from cooling towers. Studies of emerging infectious diseases should strongly consider cooling towers as a source of amoeba-associated pathogens.

Abstract
We report the early results of the surgical treatment of 59 rigid congenital clubfeet in 42 patients. All the feet were operated on in the same hospital by using a one-stage posteromedial release in 41 patients. The patients were divided into two groups as 24 patients (32 feet) had come to the hospital from rural areas, whereas 18 patients (28 feet) all came from the local semi-urban area. After an average of 2 years and 3 months 44 feet were graded either excellent or good, 7 were fair, and 8 had not been adequately corrected. The best results were seen in children who were operated on between the ages of 1 and 3 years. Those from the semi-urban area and who received adequate long-term postoperative care were slightly better.

Abstract
GDVII subgroup strains of Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) are highly virulent and produce acute polioencephalomyelitis in mice. Neither viral persistence nor demyelination is demonstrated in the few surviving mice. In contrast, DA subgroup strains are less virulent and establish a persistent central nervous system infection which results in demyelinating disease. We previously reported a subgroup-specific infection in a macrophage-like cell line, J774-1 cells; i.e., GDVII strain does not replicate in J774-1 cells, whereas the DA strain actively replicates in these cells. In addition, this subgroup-specific virus growth is shown to be related to the presence of L* protein, a 17 kDa protein translated out-of-frame of the viral polyprotein from an AUG located 13 nucleotides downstream from the polyprotein's AUG. The present paper demonstrated that this subgroup-specific infection is observed in murine monocyte/macrophage lineage cell lines, but not in other murine cell lines including neural cells. An RNase protection assay also suggested that L* protein-related virus growth is regulated at the step of viral RNA replication. As macrophages are reported to be the major cell harboring virus during the chronic demyelinating stage, the activity of L* protein with respect to virus growth in macrophages may be a key factor in clarifying the mechanism(s) of TMEV persistence, which is probably a trigger to spinal cord demyelination.

Abstract
1. The aim of the study was to determine whether a nerve-derived hyperpolarizing factor (NDHF) might contribute to non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic (NANC) relaxations of the mouse anococcygeus when low concentrations of contractile agent are used to raise tone and low frequencies of field stimulation applied; such a non-nitrergic NDHF has been proposed to contribute to NANC relaxations of the rat anococcygeus and guinea-pig taenia coli. 2. Phenylephrine (0.1-100 microM) produced concentration-related contractions of the mouse isolated anococcygeus muscle; 0.2 microM phenylephrine (EC26) was used to raise tone in subsequent experiments. 3. Field stimulation (0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 Hz) produced frequency-dependent relaxations of phenylephrine-induced tone. In the presence of the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor L-NG-nitro-arginine (L-NOARG; 100 microM), the soluble guanylate cyclase inhibitor 1H-[1,2,4]oxodiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ; 5 microM), or a combination of these two drugs, relaxations to field stimulation were abolished at all frequencies studied. Relaxations to sodium nitroprusside (0.01-5 microM) were unaffected by L-NOARG but strongly inhibited by ODQ; neither enzyme inhibitor affected relaxations to 8-Br-cyclic GMP (10 microM). 4. Nifedipine (1 microM) reduced the contractile response to 0.2 microM phenylephrine by 38%; however, it had no effect on NANC relaxations. 5. It is concluded that NANC relaxations of the mouse anococcygeus are purely nitrergic and that there is no significant contribution from a putative NDHF.

Abstract
The effect of threshing operations on the fungal spora of farm air, has been studied with the culture plate method. Air samples were taken before, during and after the threshing of paddy and wheat grains, at the end of the respective crop seasons. An immediate local increase in the airborne fungal load was observed during threshing operations. In case of wheat the high rise was due to Alternaria tenuissima, followed by Drechslera sp. and Cladosporium herbarum. In 'Boro' variety of paddy, the high count was contributed by Alternaria humicola and A. tenuissima, while in 'Aman' variety, Helminthosporium oryzae was the dominant type followed by C. herbarum and unidentified yeasts. Aspergillus spp. were observed in significant numbers before the operation started; their occurrence was negligible during threshing. A considerable number of yeast was observed, particularly during threshing and after threshing operations.

Abstract
The serological response to measles vaccine was tested in Bangladesh in groups of infants aged 4-6 months who received equal doses of Edmonston-Zagreb or Schwarz vaccine by subcutaneous injection or by aerosol. Seroconversion (as measured by the haemagglutination test) occurred in 62% of infants receiving Edmonston-Zagreb strain by injection compared with only 37% of those receiving Schwarz strain. Seroconversion occurred in 35% of those given Edmonston-Zagreb and 34% of those given Schwarz vaccine by aerosol. Edmonston-Zagreb strain appears more effective than Schwarz vaccine in this population and further studies are indicated in other populations where early measles immunisation is desirable.

Abstract
A procedure of haemodilution modified for the particular requirements of vascular surgery has been used on 90 hospital patients. 61% of the operations have been performed without using homologous blood. The method applied being clinically well tolerable, it the object of this study to find to what extent a measurable reduction of the loss of blood during the operation with consequently a reduction of the amount of homologous blood administered can be attained. If the tolerable loss of blood is estimated to be 600 ml, in 22% of the cases operated on the administration of homologous blood has been avoided. The improvement in rheology by the infusion of low molecular weight dextran is considered an additional advantage in the special field of vascular surgery.
