Mate choice is affected by parasite infestation rate of the choosing individual as well as of potential mating partners

Parasites are known to be a key driving force in mate choice and are important for the expression and evolution of ornaments and behavioral traits being used. However, there is little experimental evidence on how the parasite's burden of the choosing individual is integrated into the mate-choice process and how it affects decision-making, especially in relation to parasite infestation of potential mates. Thus, the aim of our study was to determine whether female house sparrows Passer domesticus adjust their mate preference according to their own as well as the parasite load of prospective partners. To do this, we experimentally manipulated female parasite load and determined their mate preferences prior to and after parasite treatment. We manipulated the chronic coccidian parasite burden of females either by initiating the acute infection phase via re-infecting them with coccidian or by temporally reducing the parasite load of coccidia. We then measured the effect of this manipulation on mate preference by presenting females with a choice of four stimuli: three males with similar ornaments, but unmanipulated, naturally varying chronic coccidiosis levels, and an unmanipulated control female. Additionally, we recorded some males' behavior in relation to their infection status pointing toward an increased or reduced interest in mating. We found that females preferred highly infested males prior to manipulation, regardless of their own infestation level. However, after manipulation, infested females avoided highly infested males probably in response to the deterioration of their health condition by parasites. Our study suggests that mate-choice decisions are more complex when they are mediated by parasites. The implications of parasites for evolutionary theories of sexual signaling and mate choice are discussed.

Biting midges (Ceratopogonidae) as vectors of avian trypanosomes

Background

Although avian trypanosomes are widespread parasites, the knowledge of their vectors is still incomplete. Despite biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are considered as potential vectors of avian trypanosomes, their role in transmission has not been satisfactorily elucidated. Our aim was to clarify the potential of biting midges to sustain the development of avian trypanosomes by testing their susceptibility to different strains of avian trypanosomes experimentally. Moreover, we screened biting midges for natural infections in the wild.

Results

Laboratory-bred biting midges Culicoides nubeculosus were highly susceptible to trypanosomes from the Trypanosoma bennetti and T. avium clades. Infection rates reached 100%, heavy infections developed in 55–87% of blood-fed females. Parasite stages from the insect gut were infective for birds. Moreover, midges could be infected after feeding on a trypanosome-positive bird. Avian trypanosomes can thus complete their cycle in birds and biting midges. Furthermore, we succeeded to find infected blood meal-free biting midges in the wild.

Conclusions

Biting midges are probable vectors of avian trypanosomes belonging to T. bennetti group. Midges are highly susceptible to artificial infections, can be infected after feeding on birds, and T. bennetti-infected biting midges (Culicoides spp.) have been found in nature. Moreover, midges can be used as model hosts producing metacyclic avian trypanosome stages infective for avian hosts.

Isospora plectrophenaxia n. sp (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae), a new coccidian parasite found in Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) nestlings on Spitsbergen

Faecal samples were collected from four 8 days old snow bunting nestlings from one nest in Ny-Alesund, Spitsbergen, in summer 2006. After sporulation, samples were examined for coccidian parasites using flotation centrifuging. We found isosporan oocysts in three birds, intensity of infection varied between individuals from 35 to 6,000 oocysts per defecation. All oocysts belonged to one species, which is described here as a new species. The spherical or subspherical oocysts (Fig. 1) have a brownish, smooth, relatively thin (about 1.1 microm) bilayered wall. Average size of sporulated oocysts was 26.2 +/- 0.13 x 23.6 +/- 0.16 microm (24.1-28.4 x 21.5-26.9; n = 10) with a shape index (length/width) of 1.11 +/- 0.01 (1.01-1.29). The sporulated oocysts have no micropyle or residuum but enclose one large (3.3 x 2.8 microm) ring-formed polar granule. The sporocysts are ovoidal, slightly pointed at the end opposite the Stieda body, 18.2 +/- 0.06 x 9.9 +/- 0.03 microm (17.1-19.0 x 9.0-10.8; n = 14), shape index 1.85 +/- 0.008 (1.70-1.99). The Stieda body has a prominent knob-like cap and a well-visible round substieda body. Sporocysts contain compact sporocyst residuum composed of small, uniform granules and sporozoits with usually three large refractile bodies and a smaller nucleus. The prepatent period is less than 8 days. This is the first description of an avian isosporan parasite that succeeds transmission while in the High Arctic.

Factors affecting the relapse of Haemoproteus belopolskyi infections and the parasitaemia of Trypanosoma spp. in a naturally infected European songbird, the blackcap, Sylvia atricapilla

The effects of photoperiod and stress on the relapse of Haemoproteus belopolskyi infections and the parasitaemia of Trypanosoma spp. were studied in naturally infected blackcaps, Sylvia atricapilla. Twenty-one birds (12 infected with H. belopolskyi, 5 with Trypanosoma spp.) were kept indoors and investigated by microscopic examination of stained blood films. All infections were latent before the experiments started on 7 February 2002. The relapse of H. belopolskyi and the parasitaemia of Trypanosoma spp. after the latent stage of infection were induced by increased day length and stress due to a change of room. At 44 days after the beginning of the experiment, all latent infections were patent in the experimental birds, while no parasites were recorded in the control birds. The relapse of avian Haemoproteus spp. infection and of the parasitaemia of avian Trypanosoma spp. may be related to gonadal hormones, corticosterone and melatonin.
