Abstract
Chemical reaction kinetics at the nanoscale are intertwined with heterogeneity in structure and composition. However, mapping such heterogeneity in a liquid environment is extremely challenging. Here we integrate graphene liquid cell (GLC) transmission electron microscopy and four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy to image the etching dynamics of gold nanorods in the reaction media. Critical to our experiment is the small liquid thickness in a GLC that allows the collection of high-quality electron diffraction patterns at low dose conditions. Machine learning-based data-mining of the diffraction patterns maps the three-dimensional nanocrystal orientation, groups spatial domains of various species in the GLC, and identifies newly generated nanocrystallites during reaction, offering a comprehensive understanding on the reaction mechanism inside a nanoenvironment. This work opens opportunities in probing the interplay of structural properties such as phase and strain with solution-phase reaction dynamics, which is important for applications in catalysis, energy storage, and self-assembly.

Not All Aggregates Are Made the Same: Distinct Structures of Solution Aggregates Drastically Modulate Assembly Pathways, Morphology, and Electronic Properties of Conjugated Polymers. Abstract
Tuning structures of solution-state aggregation and aggregation-mediated assembly pathways of conjugated polymers is crucial for optimizing their solid-state morphology and charge-transport property. However, it remains challenging to unravel and control the exact structures of solution aggregates, let alone to modulate assembly pathways in a controlled fashion. Herein, aggregate structures of an isoindigo-bithiophene-based polymer (PII-2T) are modulated by tuning selectivity of the solvent toward the side chain versus the backbone, which leads to three distinct assembly pathways: direct crystallization from side-chain-associated amorphous aggregates, chiral liquid crystal (LC)-mediated assembly from semicrystalline aggregates with side-chain and backbone stacking, and random agglomeration from backbone-stacked semicrystalline aggregates. Importantly, it is demonstrated that the amorphous solution aggregates, compared with semicrystalline ones, lead to significantly improved alignment and reduced paracrystalline disorder in the solid state due to direct crystallization during the meniscus-guided coating process. Alignment quantified by the dichroic ratio is enhanced by up to 14-fold, and the charge-carrier mobility increases by a maximum of 20-fold in films printed from amorphous aggregates compared to those from semicrystalline aggregates. This work shows that by tuning the precise structure of solution aggregates, the assembly pathways and the resulting thin-film morphology and device properties can be drastically tuned.

Abstract
Effects of Fe(III)/sulfate (Fe/S) ratio on organic carbon oxidation kinetics and microbial ecology of a novel Fe(III)-dosed anaerobic wastewater treatment system were investigated in this study. Fixed-film batch bioreactors under three Fe/S molar ratios (1, 2, and 3) yielded COD oxidation rates that increased with the Fe/S ratio, and estimated Michaelis-Menten model parameters Vmax ranging in 0.47-1.09 mg/L⋅min and Km in 2503-3267 mg/L. Both iron and sulfate reducing bacteria contributed to the organics oxidation, and the produced sludge materials contained both biomass (32-45 wt.%) and inorganic precipitates from biogenic ferrous iron and sulfide (68-55 wt.%). Spectroscopic and chemical elemental analyses indicated that the inorganic fraction of the sludge materials contained both FeS and FeS2, and had Fe/S stoichiometric ratios close to 1. Microbiological analyses of the biofilm samples revealed that the major putative iron- and sulfate reducers were Geobacter sp. and Desulfovibrio sp. along with noticeable N-fixing and fermentative bacteria. The COD oxidation rate had a positive correlation with the relative abundance of iron reducers, and both increased with the Fe/S ratio. A conceptual framework was proposed to illustrate the effects of Fe/S ratio on organics oxidation rate, microbial ecology and their interplays.

Abstract
The Lewis acid-base adduct approach has been widely used to form uniform perovskite films, which has provided a methodological base for the development of high-performance perovskite solar cells. However, its incompatibility with formamidinium (FA)-based perovskites has impeded further enhancement of photovoltaic performance and stability. Here, we report an efficient and reproducible method to fabricate highly uniform FAPbI3 films via the adduct approach. Replacement of the typical Lewis base dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) enabled the formation of a stable intermediate adduct phase, which can be converted into a uniform and pinhole-free FAPbI3 film. Infrared and computational analyses revealed a stronger interaction between NMP with the FA cation than DMSO, which facilitates the formation of a stable FAI·PbI2·NMP adduct. On the basis of the molecular interactions with different Lewis bases, we proposed criteria for selecting the Lewis bases. Owed to the high film quality, perovskite solar cells with the highest PCE over 20% (stabilized PCE of 19.34%) and average PCE of 18.83 ± 0.73% were demonstrated.

Abstract
We have developed a framework for using temperature dependent static and dynamic photoluminescence (PL) of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (PVSKs) to characterize lattice defects in thin films, based on the presence of nanodomains at low temperature. Our high-stability PVSK films are fabricated using a novel continuous liquid interface propagation technique, and in the tetragonal phase (T > 120 K), they exhibit bi-exponential recombination from free charge carriers with an average PL lifetime of ∼200 ns. Below 120 K, the emergence of the orthorhombic phase is accompanied by a reduction in lifetimes by an order of magnitude, which we establish to be the result of a crossover from free carrier to exciton-dominated radiative recombination. Analysis of the PL as a function of excitation power at different temperatures provides direct evidence that the exciton binding energy is different in the two phases, and using these results, we present a theoretical approach to estimate this variable binding energy. Our findings explain this anomalous low temperature behavior for the first time, attributing it to an inherent fundamental property of the hybrid PVSKs that can be used as an effective probe of thin film quality.

Abstract
The emerging molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 ) offers intriguing possibilities for realizing a transformative new catalyst for driving the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the trade-off between catalytic activity and long-term stability represents a formidable challenge and has not been extensively addressed. This study reports that metastable and temperature-sensitive chemically exfoliated MoS2 (ce-MoS2 ) can be made into electrochemically stable (5000 cycles), and thermally robust (300 °C) while maintaining synthetic scalability and excellent catalytic activity through physical-transformation into 3D structurally deformed nanostructures. The dimensional transition enabled by a high throughput electrohydrodynamic process provides highly accessible, and electrochemically active surface area and facilitates efficient transport across various interfaces. Meanwhile, the hierarchically strained morphology is found to improve electronic coupling between active sites and current collecting substrates without the need for selective engineering the electronically heterogeneous interfaces. Specifically, the synergistic combination of high strain load stemmed from capillarity-induced-self-crumpling and sulfur (S) vacancies intrinsic to chemical exfoliation enables simultaneous modulation of active site density and intrinsic HER activity regardless of continuous operation or elevated temperature. These results provide new insights into how catalytic activity, electrochemical-, and thermal stability can be concurrently enhanced through the physical transformation that is reminiscent of nature, in which properties of biological materials emerge from evolved dimensional transitions.

Abstract
Anomalous current-voltage (J-V) hysteresis in perovskite (PSK) solar cell is open to dispute, where hysteresis is argued to be due to electrode polarization, dipolar polarization, and/or native defects. However, a correlation between those factors and J-V hysteresis is hard to be directly evaluated because they usually coexist and are significantly varied depending on morphology and crystallinity of the PSK layer, selective contacts, and device architecture. In this study, without changing morphology and crystallinity of PSK layer in a planar heterojunction structure employing FA0.9Cs0.1PbI3, a correlation between J-V hysteresis and trap density is directly evaluated by means of thermally induced PbI2 regulating trap density. Increase in thermal annealing time at a given temperature of 150 °C induces growth of PbI2 on the PSK grain surface, which results in significant reduction of nonradiative recombination. Hysteresis index is reduced from 0.384 to 0.146 as the annealing time is increased from 5 to 100 min due to decrease in the amplitude of trap-mediated recombination. Reduction of hysteresis by minimizing trap density via controlling thermal annealing time leads to the stabilized PCE of 18.84% from the normal planar structured FA0.9Cs0.1PbI3 PSK solar cell.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The World Health Organization (WHO) classification of hematologic malignancies, published in 2000, was designed to improve diagnostic accuracy by incorporating the latest in scientific understanding. The impact of the WHO classification on the frequency of diagnostic discrepancy in lymphoma is unknown. METHODS We reviewed all second-opinion pathology of lymphoma at our National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center (NCI-CCC) from January to June 2001 and from January to June 2006. Discrepancies between submitted and second-opinion diagnoses were scored based upon an a priori grading schema. RESULTS Major diagnostic revision was rendered in 65 of 365 cases (17.8%) in 2001 and 58 of 354 (16.4%) in 2006 (P=NS). Including cases reviewed and revised beforehand at another NCI-CCC, rates of major diagnostic revision were 21.4% and 18.6%, respectively (P=NS). Discrepancy rates varied by diagnosis, from Hodgkin lymphoma (10%) to Burkitt's lymphoma (75%). No association was seen for age, gender, race/ethnicity, biopsy type, or nature of referring center. CONCLUSIONS Clinically meaningful diagnostic revision occurs frequently with expert pathology review for a diagnosis of lymphoma. Despite the WHO classification, rates of diagnostic revision at our institution in 2001 and 2006 did not differ significantly. Given the potential harm from misdiagnosis, expert hematopathology review should be considered the standard of care.

Abstract
237 Background: Dysregulations of cell cycle and inhibition of apoptosis are crucial factors in tumorigenesis of multiple malignancies, including urothelial carcinoma (UC). Deletions of TP53 and CDKN2A and amplification of MDM2 have been observed in UC, but their exact frequency and functional consequence is less known. We sought to determine the frequency of copy number alteration (CNA) and mutations of genes that regulate cell cycle or apoptosis in a panel of 96 cases of high-grade UC (HGUC) of bladder. Methods: 96 frozen cases of HGUC were studied, including 11 bladder small cell carcinomas. DNA was isolated and analyzed for CNA by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) using a one million oligonucleotide probe array from Agilent. The targeted genes included TP53, MDM2, CCND1, CCNE1, CDKN2A/B, E2F3 and Rb1. Traditional Sanger sequencing for mutations within TP53, Rb1, and CDKN2A was also performed. Results: The frequency of CNA and mutations are listed in the table. Overall, 54 of 96 cases (56%) showed CNA (45) or mutation (13). Deletion of CDKN2A/B and amplification of E2F3 were the most common alterations in cell cycle regulatory genes (13 cases each, 14%), followed by amplification of CCND1 (11 cases, 11%). There was no co-amplification of CCND1 and CCNE1 in any sample. Rb1 deletion was present in five cases. CNA in E2F3 and Rb1 were mutually exclusive in 14 of 16 cases (88%) and were both present in two cases only. Mutations in TP53 were noted in 13 cases and deletions in nine. Amplification of MDM2 was noted in four cases, none of which overlapped with TP53 deletions or mutations. Overexpression of E2F3 was significantly more common in small cell carcinoma (5/11) compared to conventional UC (8/85, p = 0.006). Conclusions: Regulators of cell cycle and apoptosis are amplified, deleted or mutated in more than half of cases (56%) of high-grade urothelial carcinoma. The overwhelming majority of these abnormalities are nonoverlapping. Amplification of E2F3 seems to be overrepresented in small cell carcinoma of bladder. Abstract
BACKGROUND Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) has been described as a rapidly progressive and almost invariably fatal CD20- VS38c+ diffuse large-cell lymphoma with plasmablastic features, almost exclusively involving the jaw and oral mucosa in HIV-positive patients. METHODS From 2001 to 2003 we evaluated 12 men with PBL, and report the pathology, clinical findings, treatment and outcome. Six of 12 were HIV-positive while among the others, one was post-renal transplant, one had ulcerative colitis and four had no known immunodeficiency. RESULTS Tumor growth pattern, in general, showed cohesiveness and a starry-sky pattern; the morphology varied from typical plasmablastic to centroblastic cells. Partial immunophenotypes were (+/total): CD138, 11 of 12 (91.7%); MIB1 10 of 11 (4+, range 75-95%); p63/VS38c, nine of 10 (90%); EBV, eight of 11 (73%); LCA(CD45), two of 12 (16.7%); HHV8/LANA, zero of 10; ALK, zero of seven; and CD20, zero of 12. Three had stage IE and nine stage IV disease. Nine of 12 had an intermediate/high International Prognostic Index or high-risk disease. Computed tomography and positron emission tomography scan in four of 12 revealed extensive bone metastases. Eight of 12 are alive after treatment, with a median follow-up of 11+ months (range 1-24). Of the HIV-positive patients, five of six are alive with a median follow-up of 17 months. CONCLUSIONS It appears that PBL are heterogenous in terms of clinical presentation and morphology. The outcome presented here is superior to that originally reported.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS The need for repair of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) equipment appears to be frequent and expensive. To better quantify the costs associated with echo endoscope failure, a survey of endosonographers was carried out. METHODS A survey questionnaire concerning echo endoscope damage and repair and consequences of echo endoscope downtime over a 12-month period was sent to members of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy who had cited an interest in EUS. RESULTS Responses were received from 56 of 138 institutions where EUS was carried out (41 %). A median of 325 EUS procedures had been carried out in the past year and a median of two endosonographers were employed who used an average of three echo endoscopes. Two-thirds of institutions trained fellows. A total of 225 repairs were reported for leaks (47 %), mechanical failures (33 %), images or optics difficulties (26 %), or other problems (1 %). Mechanical radial-scanning echo endoscopes tended to break, on average, after 68 procedures, while curved linear-array echo endoscopes failed after an average of 107 procedures. Echo endoscope failures led to rescheduling of procedures at three-quarters of institutions. Institutions paid an average of $ 10 534 over 12 months for echo endoscope repairs. The average repair cost per procedure was $ 41. There was an inverse relationship between quantity of procedures and the per-procedure repair rate ( P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Direct and indirect costs of echo endoscope repairs are significant. Instrument failures are multifactorial; however instrument complexity, instrument age, and institutional inexperience may contribute to repair costs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare tumor with characteristic morphologic and immunohistochemical features. It can be confused histologically and cytologically with a variety of benign and malignant lesions, including a granulomatous process, synovial sarcoma, melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and adenocarcinoma. The objective of this study was to define the cytologic features of this rare tumor. METHODS The cytologic features of nine histologically confirmed epithelioid sarcomas were analyzed. The criteria evaluated included cell size and shape, cell borders, cluster organization, cytoplasmic characteristics, nuclear and nucleolar features, and background characteristics. RESULTS In most cases, single, dispersed cells represented the predominant pattern, with only a few small clusters present. The cells were mostly round with interspersed spindle cells and mild to moderate pleomorphism. The nuclei were large and eccentrically located, with a plasmacytoid appearance. A pale zone in the perinuclear area was evident in three of nine cases. Well-defined cell borders with intercellular spaces between malignant cells were observed in eight cases. In three cases, a granuloma-like structure was identified. In two cases, the cells were mostly spindle and showed greater cellular pleomorphism. CONCLUSION Epithelioid sarcoma is an uncommon tumor with a wide range of differential diagnoses, especially in cytology specimens. Awareness of its existence and knowledge of its cytologic features are important for a correct diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Inherited mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are associated with a greatly increased lifetime risk of breast and ovarian cancers and a modestly increased risk of several other cancer types. Several case reports of endometrial carcinoma in women with a BRCA mutation have led to speculation regarding the effect of these genes on the risk of endometrial cancer. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that germline mutation of a BRCA gene is associated with an increased risk of endometrial carcinoma. METHODS A retrospective cohort of 199 consecutive Ashkenazi Jewish patients with endometrial carcinoma was identified from a 12-year period at this institution. All were genotyped for the three BRCA founder mutations (185delAG and 5382insC in BRCA1 and 6174delT in BRCA2) that exist in this population, and the case frequency was compared to the known population frequency of these mutations. Additionally, endometrial carcinomas occurring in patients with BRCA mutations were assessed for somatic loss of the wild-type BRCA allele. RESULTS Germline BRCA mutations were identified in 3 (1 in BRCA1 and two in BRCA2) of 199 (1.5%) patients, compared to a frequency of 2.0% in this population generally. A relative risk of endometrial carcinoma associated with BRCA mutation, as estimated by the odds ratio, was calculated as 0.75 (95% CI = 0.24--2.34; P = 0.6). Loss of the wild-type BRCA allele was observed in two of three tumors associated with a BRCA mutation. CONCLUSIONS For individuals with a germline BRCA mutation, the lifetime risk of endometrial carcinoma is not increased.

OBJECTIVE Laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) has evolved into an alternative form of surgical management in the treatment of low-risk endometrial cancer. The purpose of this study was to determine whether low-risk endometrial cancer patients are subject to a higher incidence of positive peritoneal cytology when treated with LAVH compared to total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH). METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with low-risk endometrial cancer (grade 1--2 endometrioid type with no evidence of extrauterine spread or grade 3 with <50% myometrial invasion (MI), no cervical or adnexal involvement, and negative lymph nodes when sampled) treated at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center from January 1993 to September 1999. We compared 131 patients treated with LAVH to 246 controls who underwent TAH. The two groups were compared for known prognostic factors including grade, MI, vascular space involvement, and lower uterine segment extension. RESULTS The mean age of patients who underwent LAVH (61 years) was similar to that of the controls (62 years). Fourteen (10.3%) of the patients treated with LAVH had positive peritoneal cytology compared to only 7 (2.8%) of the control population. Factors including FIGO grade, myometrial invasion, and preoperative hysteroscopy did not influence the final results. When stratifying for these factors, the odds ratios of having positive peritoneal washings in those patients treated by LAVH were 5.2, 5.2, and 3.7, respectively. CONCLUSION Treatment of low-risk endometrial cancer by LAVH is associated with a significantly higher incidence of positive peritoneal cytology. This may be due to the retrograde dissemination of cancer cells into the peritoneal cavity during uterine manipulation. The clinical significance of these findings is yet to be determined.

Abstract
Castleman's disease of hyaline-vascular type (HV CD) may rarely be associated with a confusing variety of stromal cell overgrowths and neoplasms. We report here on the pathologic and clinical findings of 10 such cases. In addition to the usual complex histoimmunophenotype of the stroma of HV CD and some unusual features that mimicked neoplasms, we observed focal proliferations of angiomyoid (five cases) and follicular dendritic cell type (five cases). The former were nonneoplastic growths featuring compact tangles of spindle cells, exhibiting immunoreactivity for smooth muscle actin and interpreted as vessel-related pericytes and myoid cells. The latter were neoplastic growths of oval to spindle cells intermixed with lymphocytes; the tumor cells grew in long, intersecting bundles, featured various degree of atypia, and expressed the markers of follicular dendritic cells (CD21, CD35, KiM4p). The two types were clinically distinct. Four of five patients with angiomyoid proliferations were young women, who presented with an abdominal mass and were cured by surgery; that is, they had a clinical profile similar to that of patients with the stroma-rich variant of HV CD. The follicular dendritic cell proliferations were in older patients of either gender presenting with masses at various sites, recapitulating the profile of follicular dendritic cell tumors arising independently from HV CD; in three patients with long-term follow-up, recurrences or metastases developed at various intervals from the initial diagnosis (1 1/6, 3 1/2, and 11 years), and one patient died as a result. This study confirms the potential for, and the variety of, stromal cell proliferations in HV CD. Because their biologic behavior differs, correct identification of these various proliferative lesions is clinically important.

Abstract
Basaloid-squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is a variant of squamous cell carcinoma with biphasic basaloid and squamous features. Recognition of BSCC is important because this lesion can be confused with less aggressive lesions, such as adenoid cystic carcinoma. BSCC is typically detected at an advanced stage in smokers, alcoholics, and older individuals; adenoid cystic carcinoma is not associated with smoking or alcohol, and it typically occurs in younger individuals. Approximately 88 cases of BSCC in the upper aerodigestive tract have been recorded since its first description in 1986. We report one case of endobronchial BSCC. Cytologically, both squamous and basaloid features were identified, including elongated, irregular, globular, extracellular, hyaline material. Immunohistochemical studies showed two distinct populations of cells: the squamous component, positive for cytokeratin (AE1 + AE3) and negative for smooth-muscle actin, epithelial membrane antigen, S100 protein, and type IV collagen; and the basaloid component, positive for all of the above markers, with minimal staining for cytokeratin (AE1 + AE3). The electron microscopy demonstrated desmosomes in the squamous component and replication of the basal lamina in the basaloid component. We conclude that BSCC of the bronchus is similar to BSCC in the upper aerodigestive tract and should be regarded as a distinct entity.

Abstract
Studies using cervical carcinoma cell lines usually show mutated p53 in cases without detectable HPV, and wild-type p53 in cases with detectable HPV. These findings suggest that loss of p53 function, either by mutation or by binding to HPV E6, is required for cervical carcinogenesis. Because mutated p53 is usually detectable immunohistochemically, one would predict an inverse relationship between the presence of HPV and detectable p53. In this study we examined 88 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded clinical specimens of cervix for the presence of HPV and p53 expression. All cases were studied for the presence of p53 using immunohistochemical methods. The antibody used was mouse monoclonal PAb1801 (Biogenex). The presence of HPV was detected by PCR. Twenty-six specimens showed foci of p53 expression (0/7 normal, 1/8 (13%) condylomas, 1/6 (17%) CIN I, 3/7 (43%) CIN II, 6/20 (30%) CIN III, 13/22 (59%) SCC, 2/5 (40%) adenosquamous carcinomas, and 0/13 adenocarcinomas). p53 expression was more frequent in SCC than with CIN (P = 0.026). HPV was present in 15 of 24 cases with detectable p53 and 22 of 48 cases without detectable p53. No correlation was seen between HPV status and detection of p53. With the exception of one case, p53 expression was seen in less than 10% of cells. p53 expression was not detected in any of the 13 adenocarcinomas examined (P = 0.0016 vs SCC). Our results show that alterations of p53 may play a role in the pathogenesis of cervical squamous carcinoma. However, p53 expression was neither sufficient nor required for cervical carcinogenesis, irrespective of HPV status.

Abstract
Chylous ascites is an entity not previously reported in association with AIDS. A 43-yr-old male with previous diagnosis of AIDS developed chylous ascites. Septic complications lead to his death. At autopsy, Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) lesions were present on the skin, in the omentum, mesentery, and small and large bowel mucosa. A histological section of the cisterna chyli showed involvement and obstruction by KS. This represents a unique case in which the mechanism leading to the formation of chylous ascites by KS was demonstrated by the autopsy findings in an HIV-positive patient.
