Abstract
Introduction Decreasing biotic diversity with increasing latitude is an almost universal macroecological pattern documented for a broad range of taxa, however, there have been few studies focused on changes in gut microbiota (GM) across climatic zones. Methods Using 16S rRNA amplicon profiling, we analyzed GM variation between temperate (Czechia) and tropical (Cameroon) populations of 99 passerine bird species and assessed GM similarity of temperate species migrating to tropical regions with that of residents/short-distance migrants and tropical residents. Our study also considered the possible influence of diet on GM. Results We observed no consistent GM diversity differences between tropical and temperate species. In the tropics, GM composition varied substantially between dry and rainy seasons and only a few taxa exhibited consistent differential abundance between tropical and temperate zones, irrespective of migration behavior and seasonal GM changes. During the breeding season, trans-Saharan migrant GM diverged little from species not overwintering in the tropics and did not show higher similarity to tropical passerines than temperate residents/short-distance migrants. Interestingly, GM of two temperate-breeding trans-Saharan migrants sampled in the tropical zone matched that of tropical residents and converged with other temperate species during the breeding season. Diet had a slight effect on GM composition of tropical species, but no effect on GM of temperate hosts. Discussion Consequently, our results demonstrate extensive passerine GM plasticity, the dominant role of environmental factors in its composition and limited effect of diet.

Abstract
Macrophysiological research is vital to our understanding of mechanisms underpinning global life history variation and adaptation to diverse environments. Here, we examined latitudinal and elevational variation in a key substrate of energy metabolism and an emerging physiological component of pace-of-life syndromes, blood glucose concentration. Our data, collected from 61 European temperate and 99 Afrotropical passerine species, revealed that baseline blood glucose increases with both latitude and elevation, whereas blood glucose stress response shows divergent directions, being stronger at low latitudes and high elevations. Low baseline glucose in tropical birds, compared to their temperate counterparts, was mainly explained by their low fecundity, consistent with the slow pace-of-life syndrome in the tropics. In contrast, elevational variation in this trait was decoupled from fecundity, implying a unique montane pace-of-life syndrome combining slow-paced life histories with fast-paced physiology. The observed patterns suggest that pace-of-life syndromes do not evolve along the single fast-slow axis.

Abstract
Environmental productivity, i.e., the amount of biomass produced by primary producers, belongs among the key factors for the biodiversity patterns. Although the relationship of diversity to environmental productivity differs among studied taxa, detailed data are largely missing for most groups, including insects. Here, we present a study of moth diversity patterns at local and regional scales along a continent-wide gradient of environmental productivity in southern African savannah ecosystems. We sampled diversity of moths (Lepidoptera: Heterocera) at 120 local plots along a gradient of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from the Namib Desert to woodland savannahs along the Zambezi River. By standardized light trapping, we collected 12,372 specimens belonging to 487 moth species. The relationship between species richness for most analyzed moth groups and environmental productivity was significantly positively linear at the local and regional scales. The absence of a significant relationship of most moth groups' abundance to environmental productivity did not support the role of the number of individuals in the diversity-productivity relationship for south African moths. We hypothesize the effects of water availability, habitat complexity, and plant diversity drive the observed moth diversity patterns.

Abstract
Background Thanks to the high diversity of ecosystems and habitats, South Africa harbours tremendous diversity of insects. The Kruger National Park, due to its position close to the border between two biogeographic regions and high heterogeneity of environmental conditions, represents an insufficiently studied hotspot of lepidopteran diversity. During our ecological research in the Kruger National Park, we collected abundant moth material, including several interesting faunistic records reported in this study. New information We reported 13 species of moths which had not yet been recorded in South Africa. In many cases, our records represented an important extension of the species' known distribution, including two species (Ozarbagaedei and O.persinua) whose distribution ranges extended into the Zambezian biogeographic region. Such findings confirmed the poor regional knowledge of lepidopteran diversity.

Abstract
Tropical bird species are characterized by a comparatively slow pace of life, being predictably different from their temperate zone counterparts in their investments in growth, survival and reproduction. In birds, the development of functional plumage is often considered energetically demanding investment, with consequences on individual fitness and survival. However, current knowledge of interspecific variation in feather growth patterns is mostly based on species of the northern temperate zone. We evaluated patterns in tail feather growth rates (FGR) and feather quality (stress-induced fault bar occurrence; FBO), using 1518 individuals of 167 species and 39 passerine families inhabiting Afrotropical and northern temperate zones. We detected a clear difference in feather traits between species breeding in the temperate and tropical zones, with the latter having significantly slower FGR and three times higher FBO. Moreover, trans-Saharan latitudinal migrants resembled temperate zone residents in that they exhibited a comparatively fast FGR and low FBO, despite sharing moulting environments with tropical species. Our results reveal convergent latitudinal shifts in feather growth investments (latitudinal syndrome) across unrelated passerine families and underscore the importance of breeding latitude in determining cross-species variation in key avian life-history traits.

Abstract
The use of fluorinated contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) facilitates improved image quality due to the negligible amount of endogenous fluorine atoms in the body. In this work, we present a comprehensive study of the influence of the amphiphilic polymer structure and composition on its applicability as contrast agents in 19F MRI. Three series of novel fluorine-containing poly(2-oxazoline) copolymers and terpolymers, hydrophilic-fluorophilic, hydrophilic-lipophilic-fluorophilic, and hydrophilic-thermoresponsive-fluorophilic, with block and gradient distributions of the fluorinated units, were synthesized. It was discovered that the CF3 in the 2-(3,3,3-trifluoropropyl)-2-oxazoline (CF3EtOx) group activated the cationic chain end, leading to faster copolymerization kinetics, whereby spontaneous monomer gradients were formed with accelerated incorporation of 2-methyl-2-oxazoline or 2-n-propyl-2-oxazoline with a gradual change to the less-nucleophilic CF3EtOx monomer. The obtained amphiphilic copolymers and terpolymers form spherical or wormlike micelles in water, which was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), while small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) revealed the core-shell or core-double-shell morphologies of these nanoparticles. The core and shell sizes obey the scaling laws for starlike micelles predicted by the scaling theory. Biocompatibility studies confirm that all copolymers obtained are noncytotoxic and, at the same time, exhibit high sensitivity during in vitro 19F MRI studies. The gradient copolymers provide the best 19F MRI signal-to-noise ratio in comparison with the analogue block copolymer structures, making them most promising as 19F MRI contrast agents.

Abstract
We present a novel series of radioiodinated tracers and potential theranostics for diseases accompanied by pathological function of proteins involved in choline transport. Unlike choline analogues labeled with 11C or 18F that are currently used in the clinic, the iodinated compounds described herein are applicable in positron emission tomography, single-photon emission computed tomography, and potentially in therapy, depending on the iodine isotope selection. Moreover, favorable half-lives of iodine isotopes result in much less challenging synthesis by isotope exchange reaction. Six of the described compounds were nanomolar ligands, and the best compound possessed an affinity 100-fold greater than that of choline. Biodistribution data of 125I-labeled ligands in human prostate carcinoma bearing (PC-3) mice revealed two compounds with a biodistribution profile superior to that of [18F]fluorocholine.

Abstract
Background Southern Africa hosts a high diversity of ecosystems and habitats with a tremendous diversity of Lepidoptera. Although it is one of the most studied parts of the Afrotropics, the knowledge on diversity and distribution of south African moth fauna remains insufficient. To partly fill this gap, we surveyed macromoths by automatic light traps in five localities in two relatively less sampled south African countries. New information We reported six species and one genus (Remigioides) of moths which had not yet been recorded in Namibia or Zimbabwe. Although none of these records broadened the known distribution of individual species to a new biogeographical region, they still fill important gaps in their distributions. The known distributional ranges of two species have been substantially extended, although they are still within the same biogeographical regions: ca. 800 km southwards for Remigioidesremigina (Mabille, 1884) and ca. 600 km westwards for Haplopachacinerea Aurivillius, 1905.

Abstract
Coevolutionary processes that drive the patterns of host-parasite associations can be deduced through congruence analysis of their phylogenies. Feather lice and their avian hosts have previously been used as typical model systems for congruence analysis; however, such analyses are strongly biased toward nonpasserine hosts in the temperate zone. Further, in the Afrotropical region especially, cospeciation studies of lice and birds are entirely missing. This work supplements knowledge of host-parasite associations in lice using cospeciation analysis of feather lice (genus Myrsidea and the Brueelia complex) and their avian hosts in the tropical rainforests of Cameroon. Our analysis revealed a limited number of cospeciation events in both parasite groups. The parasite-host associations in both louse groups were predominantly shaped by host switching. Despite a general dissimilarity in phylogeny for the parasites and hosts, we found significant congruence in host-parasite distance matrices, mainly driven by associations between Brueelia lice and passerine species of the Waxbill (Estrildidae) family, and Myrsidea lice and their Bulbul (Pycnonotidae) host species. As such, our study supports the importance of complex biotic interactions in tropical environments.

Abstract
Positive selection acting on Toll-like receptors (TLRs) has been recently investigated to reveal evolutionary mechanisms of host-pathogen molecular co-adaptation. Much of this research, however, has focused mainly on the identification of sites predicted to be under positive selection, bringing little insight into the functional differences and similarities among species and a limited understanding of convergent evolution in the innate immune molecules. In this study, we provide evidence of phenotypic variability in the avian TLR4 ligand-binding region (LBR), the direct interface between host and pathogen molecular structures. We show that 55 passerine species vary substantially in the distribution of electrostatic potential on the surface of the receptor, and based on these distinct patterns, we identified four species clusters. Seven of the 34 evolutionarily nonconservative and positively selected residues correspond topologically to sites previously identified as being important for lipopolysaccharide, lipid IVa or MD-2 binding. Five of these positions codetermine the identity of the charge clusters. Groups of species that host-related communities of pathogens were predicted to cluster based on their TLR4 LBR charge. Despite some evidence for convergence among taxa, there were no clear associations between the TLR4 LBR charge distribution and any of the general ecological characteristics compared (migration, latitudinal distribution and diet). Closely related species, however, mostly belonged to the same surface charge cluster indicating that phylogenetic constraints are key determinants shaping TLR4 adaptive evolution. Our results suggest that host innate immune evolution is consistent with Fahrenholz's rule on the cospeciation of hosts and their parasites.

Abstract
In this report, monodisperse upconversion NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles with superior optical properties were synthesized by the oleic acid-stabilized high-temperature co-precipitation of lanthanide chlorides in octadec-1-ene as a high-boiling organic solvent. To render the particles with biocompatibility and colloidal stability in bioanalytically relevant phosphate buffered saline (PBS), they were modified by using in-house synthesized poly(ethylene glycol)-neridronate (PEG-Ner), a bisphosponate. The NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+@PEG nanoparticles showed excellent long-term stability in PBS and/or albumin without any aggregation or morphology transformation. The in vitro cytotoxicity of the nanoparticles was evaluated using primary fibroblasts (HF) and a cell line derived from human cervical carcinoma (HeLa). The particles were subsequently modified by using Bolton-Hunter-hydroxybisphosphonate to enable radiolabeling with 125I for single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) bimodal imaging to monitor the biodistribution of the nanoparticles in non-tumor mice. The bimodal upconversion 125I-radiolabeled NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+@PEG nanoparticles are prospective for near-infrared (NIR) photothermal/photodynamic and SPECT/CT cancer theranostics.

Abstract
Degradable poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) hydrogels were prepared from a linear copolymer (Mw = 49 kDa) of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), 2-(acethylthio)ethyl methacrylate (ATEMA), and zwitterionic 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC). The deprotection of ATEMA thiol groups by triethylamine followed by their gentle oxidation with 2,2'-dithiodipyridine resulted in the formation of reductively degradable polymers with disulfide bridges. Finally, a hydrogel 3D structure with an oriented porosity was obtained by gelation of the polymer in the presence of needle-like sodium acetate crystals. The pore diameter and porosity of resulting poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-2-(acethylthio)ethyl methacrylate-co-2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) [P(HEMA-ATEMA-MPC)] hydrogels varied between 59 and 65 μm and between 70 and 79.6 vol % according to Hg porosimetry, and complete degradation of these materials was reached in 86 days in 0.33 mmol solution of l-cysteine/L in phosphate buffer. The cross-linked P(HEMA-ATEMA-MPC) hydrogels were evaluated as a possible support for human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). No cytotoxicity was found for the un-cross-linked thiol-containing and protected P(HEMA-ATEMA-MPC) chains up to a concentration of 5 and 1 wt % in α-minimum essential medium, respectively.

Abstract
Owing to their tunable blood circulation time and suitable plasma stability, polymer-based nanomaterials hold a great potential for designing and utilising multifunctional nanocarriers for efficient imaging and effective treatment of cancer. When tagged with appropriate radionuclides, they may allow for specific detection (diagnosis) as well as the destruction of tumours (therapy) or even customization of materials, aiming to both diagnosis and therapy (theranostic approach). This review provides an overview of recent developments of radiolabelled polymeric nanomaterials (natural and synthetic polymers) for molecular imaging of cancer, specifically, applying nuclear techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Different approaches to radiolabel polymers are evaluated from the methodical radiochemical point of view. This includes new bifunctional chelating agents (BFCAs) for radiometals as well as novel labelling methods. Special emphasis is given to eligible strategies employed to evade the mononuclear phagocytic system (MPS) in view of efficient targeting. The discussion encompasses promising strategies currently employed as well as emerging possibilities in radionuclide-based cancer therapy. Key issues involved in the clinical translation of radiolabelled polymers and future scopes of this intriguing research field are also discussed.

In many of these applications these polymers get in contact with ionizing radiation, e.g., if they are used as carriers for radiopharmaceuticals or during radiation sterilization. Despite this fact, radiosensitivity of these polymers is largely overlooked to date. In this work, we describe the effect of electron beam ionizing radiation on the physicochemical and phase separation properties of selected thermoresponsive polymers with CPT between room and body temperature. Stability of the polymers to radiation (doses 0-20 kGy) in aqueous solutions increased in the order poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL, the least stable) ≪ poly[N-(2,2-difluoroethyl)acrylamide] (DFP) < poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) ≪ poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline-co-2-n-butyl-2-oxazoline) (POX). Even low doses of β radiation (1 kGy), which are highly relevant to the storage of polymer radiotherapeutics and sterilization of biomedical systems, cause significant increase in molecular weight due to cross-linking (except for POX, where this effect is weak). In the case of PVCL irradiated with low doses, the increase in molecular weight induced an increase in the CPT of the polymer. For PNIPAM and DFP, there is strong chain hydrophilization leading to an increase in CPT. From this perspective, POX is the most suitable polymer for the construction of delivery systems that experience exposure to radiation, while PVCL is the least suitable and PNIPAM and DFP are suitable only for low radiation demands.

Abstract
In the present study, we describe the synthesis and physicochemical properties of a novel pH- and thermoresponsive micellar drug delivery system for an anticancer ellipticinium derivative based on the triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-block-[tert-butylacrylamide-co-6-(N-methacryloylamino)hexanoic acid hydrazide]-block-poly(ethylene oxide). The system was designed to meet the basic criteria required for drug carrier systems, namely, solubility in water (overcoming the insolubility of ellipticine), satisfactory drug loading, particle size suitable for an efficient enhanced permeability and retention effect and adequate stability in blood plasma (pH 7.4) followed by rapid drug release in tumors or tumor cell endosomes (pH<6.5). The copolymer in the form of a unimer can be eliminated by kidneys because the weight-average molecular weight of 21 kDa is sufficiently below the renal threshold. The half-life of drug release in a pH 5.0 buffer solution (pH of a late endosome) was ~45 h, but a negligible amount of the free ellipticine derivative was detected at pH 7.4 (pH of blood). Consequently, this supramolecular polymer conjugate is a good candidate for the delivery of ellipticine-based drugs and will therefore be subjected to more detailed studies.

Abstract
Hansen et al. (Reports, 15 November 2013, p. 850) published a high-resolution global forest map with detailed information on local forest loss and gain. We show that their product does not distinguish tropical forests from plantations and even herbaceous crops, which leads to a substantial underestimate of forest loss and compromises its value for local policy decisions.

Abstract
Sperm competition represents an important component of post-copulatory sexual selection. It has been argued that the level of sperm competition declines in birds towards the equator. However, to date, sperm competition estimates have been available mainly for avian species inhabiting the northern temperate zone. Here we apply a novel approach, using the coefficient of between-male variation (CV(bm)) in sperm size as an index for sperm competition risk, in a comparative analysis of 31 Afrotropical and 99 northern temperate zone passerine species. We found no difference in sperm competition risk between the two groups, nor any relationship with migration distance. However, a multivariate model indicated that sperm competition risk was highest in species with a combination of low body mass and few eggs per clutch. The effect of clutch size was most pronounced in tropical species, which indicates that sperm competition risk in tropical and temperate species is differently associated with particular life-history traits. Although tropical species had lower sperm competition risk than temperate zone species for overlapping clutch sizes, the idea of a generally reduced risk of sperm competition in tropical birds was not supported by our analysis.

Abstract
Diisopropyl 8-bromo-2,6-diamino-9-[2-(phosphonomethoxy)ethyl]purine was used as a starting material for the synthesis of the 8-C-substituted 2,6-diamino-9-[2-(phosphonomethoxy)ethyl]purine (PMEDAP) analogues. A systematic screening of diverse cross-coupling reactions was carried out. Stille, Suzuki–Miyaura, Negishi, and Sonogashira cross-couplings, as well as Pd-catalysed reactions with trialkylaluminiums, were employed for the introduction of various alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, and hetaryl substituents to the C-8 position of the 2,6-diaminopurine moiety. In contrast to the potent parent compound PMEDAP, which exhibits potent antiretroviral and antitumor activity, none of the sixteen newly synthesized 8-C-substituted analogues of PMEDAP showed any specific antiviral activity.
