Abstract
We isolated an apparently new virus in the family Paramyxoviridae from stillborn piglets with deformities at a piggery in New South Wales, Australia. In 1997, the pregnancy rate and litter size at the piggery decreased markedly, while the proportion of mummified fetuses increased. We found serologic evidence of infection in pigs at the affected piggery and two associated piggeries, in humans exposed to infected pigs, and in fruit bats. Menangle virus is proposed as a common name for this agent, should further studies confirm that it is a newly recognized virus.

Abstract
In 2003 an outbreak of sudden deaths occurred in 3-4-week-old piglets on a farm in New South Wales, Australia. There was a marked increase in the birth of stillborn foetuses. Pathological changes consisted of a multifocal non-suppurative myocarditis. A viral infection was suspected but a wide range of known agents were excluded. A modified sequence independent single primer amplification (SISPA) method was used to identify a novel virus associated with this outbreak. Conserved 5'UTR motifs, the presence of a putative N(pro) coding region and limited antigenic cross-reactivity with other members of the Pestivirus genus, support the placement of this virus in the Pestivirus genus. Phylogenetic analysis of the 5'UTR, N(pro) and E2 coding regions showed this virus to be the most divergent pestivirus identified to date.

Abstract
Over the past 6 years, a number of zoonotic and vectorborne viral diseases have emerged in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. Vectorborne disease agents discussed in this article include Japanese encephalitis, Barmah Forest, Ross River, and Chikungunya viruses. However, most emerging viruses have been zoonotic, with fruit bats, including flying fox species as the probable wildlife hosts, and these will be discussed as well. The first of these disease agents to emerge was Hendra virus, formerly called equine morbillivirus. This was followed by outbreaks caused by a rabies-related virus, Australian bat lyssavirus, and a virus associated with porcine stillbirths and malformations, Menangle virus. Nipah virus caused an outbreak of fatal pneumonia in pigs and encephalitis in humans in the Malay Peninsula. Most recently, Tioman virus has been isolated from flying foxes, but it has not yet been associated with animal or human disease. Of nonzoonotic viruses, the most important regionally have been enterovirus 71 and HIV.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Determine the prevalence of the major enteric pathogens in dairy and dairy beef calves with diarrhoea in Australia. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS Faecal samples from 84 Australian dairy and dairy beef properties (597 samples) were screened for rotavirus and coronavirus using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, for Salmonella spp. using selective enrichment faecal culture, and for enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (K99) and Cryptosporidium parvum using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A logistic regression with random effects model was used to compare prevalence of pathogens in dairy and dairy beef operations. RESULTS Enteric pathogens were isolated from 97.6% of outbreaks and 95.0% of samples. Rotavirus was the most common pathogen identified (477/597, 79.9%) followed by C. parvum (349/597, 58.5%), Salmonella spp. (142/597, 23.8%), coronavirus (129/597, 21.6%) and E. coli K99 (104/597, 17.4%). Multiple pathogens were identified on 96.4% of farms and from 71.0% of samples. Samples from dairy beef properties were more likely to have multiple pathogens than dairy properties (P < 0.05), whereas rotavirus and Salmonella spp. were more likely to be identified in samples collected from dairy beef than dairy properties (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Most outbreaks of calf diarrhoea in dairy and dairy beef operations involve multiple pathogens. Rotavirus and C. parvum were the most frequently identified pathogens across production systems. Salmonella spp. and rotavirus were more frequently identified in dairy beef operations.

Abstract
Unmated heifers seronegative to bovine pestivirus were used to investigate the effects on conception and embryo-fetal survival of pestivirus infection around the time of artificial insemination. The reproductive performances of three groups were compared; the control group did not become infected during pregnancy, group 1 heifers were infected by contact with a persistently infected cow and calf four days after insemination and group 2 heifers were infected intranasally nine days before insemination. Conception rates and embryo-fetal survival were monitored by serial serum progesterone assays, transrectal ultrasonography and manual palpation of the uterus. The conception rates (determined 20 days after insemination) of 60 per cent (nine of 15) and 44 per cent (eight of 18) for groups 1 and 2 were lower than the 79 per cent (11 of 14) achieved by the control group. The group 1 heifers subsequently experienced significant embryo-fetal loss, resulting in a pregnancy rate (determined 77 days after insemination) of 33 per cent (five of 15), significantly lower than the control group's 79 per cent (11 of 14). The pregnancy rate of the group 2 heifers (39 per cent, seven of 18) was also significantly lower than that of the controls, largely as a result of the group's poor conception rate. All the heifers diagnosed pregnant 275 days after insemination were induced to calve. No persistently infected calves were born.

Abstract
After an apparently new virus in the family Paramyxoviridae was isolated from pigs in August 1997, an investigation was carried out to assess its risk for humans. More than 250 persons with potential exposure to infected pigs were tested serologically. Two piggery workers with intense occupational exposure had high convalescent-phase antibody titers to this new virus. In early June 1997, both workers had an influenzalike illness with rash; serologic testing showed no alternative cause. Strong evidence indicates that the two men became ill from this new virus, but the mode of transmission from pigs to humans remains unknown.

Abstract
Five mature bulls were studied during an acute transient infection with bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV). The bulls had been infected experimentally by the intranasal instillation of blood and serum from a cow which was a persistent carrier of the virus. Infection was confirmed by the demonstration of a low titred viraemia in four of the five animals and by the seroconversion of all five. Semen samples were collected from each bull on four occasions between seven and 14 days after infection. The virus was isolated from the semen of three of the five bulls and from nine of 12 batches of semen from them. In contrast to other studies of the infection of semen, BVDV was isolated with similar efficiency from raw, unprocessed semen and from diluted, extended semen. The titres of virus in the semen ranged from 5 to 75 TCID50/ml. The infection did not appear to affect the quality of the semen. Shedding of virus continued after the end of the period of viraemia and appeared to be a consequence of the replication of the virus in the reproductive tract and its subsequent excretion in the seminal fluid. Virological studies of the reproductive tracts of these bulls suggested that the most productive sites of virus replication were the seminal vesicles and the prostate gland. Concurrent studies in a persistently infected bull supported these findings.

Abstract
A prospective study of the incidence and severity of congenital deformities of calves, attributable to maternal infection by Akabane virus, was carried out on a population of 174 susceptible animals that were between one and nine months pregnant at the time of infection. The study was carried out in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales during 1983, after an epidemic of Akabane virus infection in late February to early March 1983. The incidence of virus-induced abnormalities in calves and fetuses was 17.8 per cent (31/174). The highest incidence of abnormalities occurred during the third and sixth months of gestation (27 to 29 per cent). The earliest abnormality was observed after infection at 76 days of gestation, and the last after infection at 249 days. The development of the pathological entities of hydranencephaly/porencephaly and arthrogryposis were found to be quite distinct. Cases of hydranencephaly and porencephaly developed after infection between 76 and 104 days of gestation whereas arthrogryposis developed after infection between 103 and 174 days of infection. It was concluded that the type of congenital deformity produced by maternal infection with Akabane virus was dependent on the stage of fetal development at the time of infection. The data suggest that the infection was transplacental and that fetuses of less than two months of age were protected from infection.

Abstract
During the certification of the bulls at an artificial breeding centre for freedom from pestivirus infection, a single viraemic bull was identified, and further testing confirmed that it was persistently infected. The two-year-old bull was healthy and of similar bodyweight to its peers. Its semen was of normal quality on the basis of density, motility and morphological criteria. Approximately 600 doses of semen had been distributed for sire evaluation purposes to 97 dairy farms. An examination of the breeding records indicated a first service conception rate of 38 per cent. All but one of the 162 cows inseminated with the bull's semen were seropositive compared with 95 of 143 cows (66.4 per cent) inseminated with semen from other bulls. Virological studies of the 61 calves sired by the persistently infected bull revealed that two were persistently infected, but that the others were healthy and uninfected. It was concluded that the semen from this bull was a potential source of pestivirus infection for 'clean' herds.

Abstract
In November of 1997 an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza occurred near the town of Tamworth, in northern New South Wales, Australia. The viruses isolated from chickens on two commercial chicken farms were identified as H7N4 viruses, with hemagglutinin cleavage site amino acid sequences of RKRKRG and intravenous pathogenicity indices of 2.52 and 2.90, respectively. A virus with an identical nucleotide sequence, but with an intravenous pathogenicity index of 1.30, was also isolated from cloacal swabs collected from asymptomatic emus kept on a third property.

Abstract
Bovine pestivirus infection has been mainly recognized as the cause of mucosal disease, a syndrome which occurs sporadically in weaned and adult cattle as a late sequel to foetal infection during the first 3-4 months of gestation. Infection has also been associated with the occurrence of congenital malformations, especially of the central nervous system. Following the development of improved diagnostic and research techniques, pestivirus has now been shown to be associated with significant early reproductive loss including fertilization failure, embryonic mortality and abortion. The principal determinant of the outcome of in utero infection in the bovine is the age of the conceptus when infection occurs.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to determine for Australian wild rabbits the specificity of a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) developed in Italy for detecting antibodies to RHDV. Analysis of 657 sera collected before the arrival of RHDV (pre-RHD) indicated that between 17 and 38% appeared to give false positive results depending on the cut-off criteria used. The finding of pre-RHD sera reacting positively in the cELISA prompted the testing of sera in a cELISA using as antigen smooth forms of RHDV (cELISA-sf) and a solid-phase ELISA (spELISA), both of which detect reactivity to an epitope shared by the lagomorph caliciviruses. Testing of a subset of the pre-RHD sera in the cELISA-sf and the spELISA revealed that 86 and 91%, respectively, were positive. Similar results were obtained for a set of sera collected pre-RHD in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Sera collected from wild-stock rabbits born and raised in isolation in an animal house in the ACT were all negative in the cELISA, 6% were positive in the cELISA-sf and 13% in the spELISA. It was concluded that a calicivirus related to RHDV and European brown hare syndrome virus (EBHSV) was present in the rabbit population before the arrival of RHDV, and may still be present. The potential consequences of these findings for epidemiological studies on RHD in Australia are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We report a single centre experience of neonatal respiratory ECMO using the Avalon® double-lumen venous cannula and compare it with reports in the literature. RESULTS Between 2008 and 2012, the Avalon® cannula was used in 72 neonates: median age at cannulation was 1.8 days (IQR 1.2-2.8 days) and bodyweight 3.4 Kg (3.0-3.7 Kg). Meconium aspiration syndrome (61.1%), persistent hypertension of the newborn (25%) and congenital diaphragmatic hernia (5.6%) were the most common diagnoses. Complications occurred in 19 patients (26.4%): cannula site bleeding in 6 (8.3%), the cannula perforating the right atrial wall and requiring emergency midline sternotomy in 5 (6.9%) and the cannula needing repositioning in 3 (4.2%). Overall survival at discharge or transfer to the referring hospital was 88.8%. Successful wean off ECMO occurred in 68 patients (94.4%) after a median of 90.5 hours (63.4-136.11). ECMO support was withdrawn in 4 patients (5.6%). CONCLUSIONS The Avalon® dual-lumen veno-venous cannula can be used for respiratory ECMO in the neonatal population. However, as the incidence of right atrial perforation is not negligible, we suspended its used in this group of patients.

Abstract
A study of the prevalence, spread and control of caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV) in dairy goat herds in New South Wales (NSW) during 1986-1988 found that 56.8% of 1484 goats in 14 dairy herds were infected with CAEV. The prevalence of CAEV infection within most herds not implementing control measures increased during the study. At the end of the study, 59.7% of 1322 goats were infected. The prevalence of CAEV increased with age. Differences between breeds were less apparent. Within seven herds with a high standard of identification of goats, 149 of 812 goats seroconverted in an ELISA. Of these newly infected goats, 142 (95.3%) were > 1 yr of age and 96 (64.4%) were > 2 yr suggesting lateral spread of the virus. Most of the goats > 2 yr of age had been in the milking herd for a minimum of 3 to 6 months. The high seroconversion rate within the milking herd suggested that factors other than the ingestion of infected colostrum and milk before weaning were important for the spread of CAEV. Observations indicated that behaviour of goats, particularly reproductive behaviour among lactating does, and milking herd management practices are important in the spread of CAEV. A high density of livestock, poor livestock control and contamination of feed, water, equipment and personnel were implicated in transmission. Poorly functioning milking machines may also be involved. CAEV was eradicated from 3 herds by the implementation of strict control measures.

Abstract
Akabane virus is a Culicoides-borne orthobunyavirus that is teratogenic to the fetus of cattle and small ruminant species. Depending upon the stage of gestation atwhich infection occurs, and the length of gestation of the mammalian host, a range of congenital defects may be observed. The developing central nervous system is usually the most severely affected, with hydranencephaly and arthrogryposis most frequently observed. Less commonly, some strains of Akabane virus can cause encephalitis in the neonate or, rarely, adult cattle. Akabane viruses are known to be widespread in temperate and tropical regions of Australia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and some African countries. Disease is infrequently observed in regions where this virus is endemic and the presence of the virus remains unrecognised in the absence of serological surveillance. In some Asian countries, vaccines are used to minimise the occurrence of disease.

Abstract
When 73 heifers (60 of which were seronegative to pestivirus) were inseminated with pestivirus-contaminated semen from a transiently infected bull, the conception rate to a single insemination was found to be normal (65 per cent). Only three animals became systemically infected, as determined by viraemia and seroconversion. Pestivirus was isolated from the reproductive tracts of two of these heifers when they were slaughtered 42 or 43 days after insemination. Although the initial incidence of infection was low, a cycle of secondary transmission occurred approximately 29 days after insemination, with a further eight heifers (all seronegative) becoming infected from one group of 11 seronegative and four seropositive animals.

Abstract
During a study of methods of synchronizing estrus in Bos indicus cattle, blood was collected from 169 heifers and 38 cows 2 to 3 days prior to artificial insemination (AI), and then again at Day 51 and Day 210 after AI to determine the incidence of infection with bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) virus. Prior to insemination 53 and 68% of the cows and heifers, respectively, were seronegative to the BVD virus. At Day 51 after AI, 70 and 32% of the seronegative cows and heifers, respectively, had seroconverted; but between Day 51 and Day 210, only 17 and 3% of the seronegative cows and heifers, respectively, had seroconverted. The Day- 51 pregnancy rate of cows which were immune (seropositive) to BVD virus infection at the time of AI was similar to the rate of the cows which became infected around the time of AI. However, the pregnancy rate of the immune heifers (44%, n=54) was significantly (P=0.04) greater than the rate of the heifers which became infected around the time of AI (24%, n=37). It was concluded that infection of susceptible females with BVD virus around the time of AI may significantly lower the pregnancy rate.

Abstract
A 300-sow farrow-to-finish herd in New South Wales was infected with influenza pandemic (H1N1) 2009 (H1N1/09) virus in July 2009 and became the first recorded case of influenza in pigs in Australia. The outbreak resulted from human-to-pig transmission. Clinical signs in affected pigs were mild compared with overseas reports of 'classical' swine influenza virus and included coughing and decreased appetite in a small proportion of non-lactating breeding stock, weaners, growers and finishers. A diagnosis of H1N1/09 influenza virus infection was confirmed using a combination of serology (haemagglutination inhibition, blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Attempts at virus isolation were unsuccessful. Results of a longitudinal study of pigs on this farm suggested that the virus continued to circulate for 9 weeks after the onset of infection, but was not present 6 months later. This report highlights the difficulties in preventing transmission of H1N1/09 influenza virus from infected humans to pigs during a human pandemic.

Abstract
An antigen-capture ELISA was developed for the detection of pestivirus-specific antigens in peripheral blood leucocytes (PBLs), blood clots and tissue samples of immunotolerant cattle persistently infected with virus. The ELISA demonstrated complete agreement with conventional virus isolation procedures undertaken on specimens from a total of 58 carrier animals and 360 uninfected animals. The technique is based on capturing antigen with a high-titred goat polyclonal antiserum and detecting the bound antigen with a combination of 3 broadly-reactive monoclonal antibodies. Increased sensitivity was obtained with the use of an avidin-biotin complex (ABC) amplification method. On average, ELISA optical densities (ODs) for PBL and blood clot samples derived from carrier animals were 1.53 and 0.95, respectively, while uninfected animals had corresponding values of less than 0.15 for all blood samples. Tissue samples from carrier cattle had OD values ranging from an average of 0.95 for liver to 1.77 for spleen, with negative values for all tissues again averaging less than 0.20. Signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios calculated from the ELISA OD readings for carrier cattle showed an average of 15.6 for blood samples and 16.4 for tissues. In contrast, all samples from negative cattle had S/N ratios less than 2.0. The antigen-capture ELISA has been validated on field samples and is suitable for routine diagnostic and certification testing.

Abstract
During the equine influenza (EI) outbreak, respiratory disease was observed in dogs that were in close proximity to infected horses. Investigations were undertaken to exclude influenza virus infection. Of the 23 dogs that were seropositive in tests using the influenza A/Sydney/2007 virus as the test antigen, 10 showed clinical signs. EI virus appeared to be readily transmitted to dogs that were held in close proximity to infected horses, but there was no evidence of lateral transmission of the virus to other dogs that did not have contact with or were not held in close proximity to horses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine flying foxes (Pteropus spp.) for evidence of infection with Menangle virus. DESIGN Clustered non-random sampling for serology, virus isolation and electron microscopy (EM). PROCEDURE Serum samples were collected from 306 Pteropus spp. in northern and eastern Australia and tested for antibodies against Menangle virus (MenV) using a virus neutralisation test (VNT). Virus isolation was attempted from tissues and faeces collected from 215 Pteropus spp. in New South Wales. Faecal samples from 68 individual Pteropus spp. and four pools of faeces were examined by transmission EM following routine negative staining and immunogold labelling. RESULTS Neutralising antibodies (VNT titres > or = 8) against MenV were detected in 46% of black flying foxes (P. alecto), 41% of grey-headed flying foxes (P. poliocephalus), 25% of spectacled flying foxes (P. conspicillatus) and 1% of little red flying foxes (P. scapulatus) in Australia. Positive sera included samples collected from P. poliocephalus in a colony adjacent to a piggery that had experienced reproductive disease caused by MenV. Virus-like particles were observed by EM in faeces from Pteropus spp. and reactivity was detected in pooled faeces and urine by immunogold EM using sera from sows that had been exposed to MenV. Attempts to isolate the virus from the faeces and tissues from Pteropus spp. were unsuccessful. CONCLUSION Serological evidence of infection with MenV was detected in Pteropus spp. in Australia. Although virus-like particles were detected in faeces, no viruses were isolated from faeces, urine or tissues of Pteropus spp.

Abstract
Sentinel herds of large ruminants were established at five centres in Yunnan Province, Peoples Republic of China, between 1995 and 1997. The application of a sensitive antigen capture ELISA to facilitate virus isolation procedures led to the isolation of 108 strains of bluetongue (BLU) virus. Serotypes isolated included types 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 11, 12, 15, 16, 21 and 23. Virus transmission occurred over a period of 1-3 months at each of the four positive sites, giving an overall BLU virus transmission period for the province of 5 months, from early June to early November. The greatest level of transmission took place in July and August. The duration of viraemia in individual animals varied from 1 to 7 weeks, with a mean calculated for each serotype between 6 and 20 days. The study represents the first detailed investigation of the epidemiology of BLU in China utilizing sentinel herds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) are found worldwide in numerous bird species, causing significant disease in gallinaceous poultry and occasionally other species. Surveillance of wild bird reservoirs provides an opportunity to add to the understanding of the epidemiology of AIVs. METHODS This study examined key findings from the National Avian Influenza Wild Bird Surveillance Program over a 5-year period (July 2007-June 2012), the main source of information on AIVs circulating in Australia. RESULTS The overall proportion of birds that tested positive for influenza A via PCR was 1.9 ± 0.1%, with evidence of widespread exposure of Australian wild birds to most low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) subtypes (H1-13, H16). LPAI H5 subtypes were found to be dominant and widespread during this 5-year period. CONCLUSION Given Australia's isolation, both geographically and ecologically, it is important for Australia not to assume that the epidemiology of AIV from other geographic regions applies here. Despite all previous highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks in Australian poultry being attributed to H7 subtypes, widespread detection of H5 subtypes in wild birds may represent an ongoing risk to the Australian poultry industry.
