Is Deceitful Autobiographical Memory Really Forgotten?

Autobiographical memory for deceitful events is said to be forgotten over time to reduce guilt and stress. People who engage in deceitful behavior continue to do so because they are able to stretch their memories to match their moral outlook. In this study, the authors wanted to see if participants who engage in deceitful behavior will change their behavior if they are reminded of their previous misdeeds and compare it with reminding them of past moral behavior and any neutral event. We also studied how the experience, or phenomenology of remembering, differs between immoral and moral memories. In Experiment 1, we found evidence to suggest that reminding deceptive autobiographical memory does not reduce deceptive behavior. In Experiment 2, we found evidence to suggest phenomenological characteristics of Immoral and moral memories are not significantly different from each other but they are both significantly different from that of neutral memory. This contradicts established results in the field. It is interesting to note that only emotional valence is significantly different between immoral and moral memory.

Vibrational analysis of substituted phenols: part I. Vibrational spectra, normal coordinate analysis and transferability of force constants of some formyl-, methoxy-, formylmethoxy-, methyl- and halogeno-phenols

The Raman (including FT-Raman) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of 1,3-dihydroxybenzene, 1,4-dihydroxybenzene, 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde, 1,2-dihydroxy-3-methoxybenzene, 2,5-dihydroxytoluene, 2,6-dihydroxytoluene, pentachlorophenol and pentabromophenol were measured. Raman polarisation measurements were made wherever possible. A normal coordinate treatment was carried out for both the in-plane and out-of-plane vibrations of these molecules using a 123-parameter-modified valence force field. An overlay least-squares technique was employed to refine the force constants using 347 frequencies of 10 molecules. The reliability of these force constants was tested by making a zero-order calculation for 10 related molecules. Unambiguous vibrational assignments of all the fundamentals were made using the potential energy distributions and eigenvectors.

Vibrational analysis of substituted phenols: part II. Transferability of valence force constants

A zero-order normal coordinate analysis was made for the in-plane and out-of-plane vibrations of 2,6-dimethylphenol, 2,3-dimethylphenol, 3,5-dimethylphenol, 2,6-dichloro-4-nitrophenol, 2,4-dichloro-6-nitrophenol, 3-chloro-4-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzaldehyde, 3-bromo-4-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzaldehyde and 3-iodo-4-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzaldehyde and for the in-plane vibrations of 2-amino-4-nitrophenol by transferring the force constants obtained beforehand. The transferability of the force constants was demonstrated by the good agreement between the observed and calculated frequencies. On the basis of calculated potential energy distributions and eigenvectors, several assignments suggested by earlier workers have been revised.
