Synoptic assessment of coastal total alkalinity through community science

Comprehensive sampling of the carbonate system in estuaries and coastal waters can be difficult and expensive because of the complex and heterogeneous nature of near-shore environments. We show that sample collection by community science programs is a viable strategy for expanding estuarine carbonate system monitoring and prioritizing regions for more targeted assessment. 'Shell Day' was a single-day regional water monitoring event coordinating coastal carbonate chemistry observations by 59 community science programs and seven research institutions in the northeastern United States, in which 410 total alkalinity (TA) samples from 86 stations were collected. Field replicates collected at both low and high tides had a mean standard deviation between replicates of 3.6 ± 0.3 μmol kg^-1 (σ _mean ± SE, n = 145) or 0.20 ± 0.02%. This level of precision demonstrates that with adequate protocols for sample collection, handling, storage, and analysis, community science programs are able to collect TA samples leading to high-quality analyses and data. Despite correlations between salinity, temperature, and TA observed at multiple spatial scales, empirical predictions of TA had relatively high root mean square error >48 μmol kg^-1. Additionally, ten stations displayed tidal variability in TA that was not likely driven by low TA freshwater inputs. As such, TA cannot be predicted accurately from salinity using a single relationship across the northeastern US region, though predictions may be viable at more localized scales where consistent freshwater and seawater endmembers can be defined. There was a high degree of geographic heterogeneity in both mean and tidal variability in TA, and this single-day snapshot sampling identified three patterns driving variation in TA, with certain locations exhibiting increased risk of acidification. The success of Shell Day implies that similar community science based events could be conducted in other regions to not only expand understanding of the coastal carbonate system, but also provide a way to inventory monitoring assets, build partnerships with stakeholders, and expand education and outreach to a broader constituency.

Perfluorinated chemicals in the arctic atmosphere

Twenty high-volume air samples were collected during a crossing of the North Atlantic and Canadian Archipelago in July 2005 to investigate air concentrations of fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) and perfluoalkyl sulfonamido ethanols (PFASs). These commercial chemicals are widely used as surface treatments and are believed to be precursors for perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) that accumulate in humans and biota, including those from remote arctic regions. The highest concentrations (sum of gas- and particle-phase) of FTOHs were for 8:2 FTOH (perfluoroctyl ethanol) (5.8-26 pg/m(3)), followed by 10:2 FTOH (perfluorodecyl ethanol) (1.9-17 pg/ m(3)) and 6:2 FTOH (perfluorohexyl ethanol) [BDL (below detection limit) to 6.0 pg/m(3)]. For the PFASs, MeFOSE (N-methyl perfluorooctane sulfonamido ethanol) was dominant and ranged from 2.6 to 31 pg/m(3); EtFOSE (N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamido ethanol) ranged from BDL to 8.9 pg/m(3) and MeFOSEA (N-methyl perfluorooctane sulfonamide ethylacrylate) was BDL in all samples. Air parcel back-trajectories showed that the sampled air was largely representative of the arctic air mass. Air concentrations of target compounds were of the same order of magnitude as reported air concentrations in source regions. For instance, the mean 8:2 FTOH concentration was only a factor of about 3 lower than for three urban samples that were collected in Toronto for comparison. These findings confirm model results that predictthe efficient, long-range atmospheric transport and widespread distribution of FTOHs and related compounds in the arctic region. Mean particulate percentages for FTOHs and PFASs in the cruise samples (mean temperature, 5+/-4 degrees C) were BDL for 6:2 FTOH, 23% for 8:2 FTOH, 15% for 10:2 FTOH, 32% for MeFOSE, and 22% for EtFOSE. Further, the partitioning to particles for MeFOSE and EtFOSE was significantly correlated with inverse absolute temperature, whereas the FTOHs did not show this trend. The Toronto samples (mean temperature, -1+/-1 degree C) showed similar particulate percentages for MeFOSE and EtFOSE; however, the FTOHs were substantially less particle-bound. Although the mechanism for this partitioning is not understood, the results do indicate the need to better account for particle phase transport when modeling the atmospheric fate of these chemicals.

Serous cystadenoma of the epididymis of common epithelial ovarian type: case report with an immunohistochemical study

We report the clinical, morphological and immunohistochemical findings of a case with non-papillary serous cystadenoma of the epididymis. The tumor was a unilocular cyst with a thin fibrous capsule, lined by cuboidal or columnar epithelium containing ciliated cells, mostly arranged in a single layer. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin (CK) AE1/AE3 and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), strongly positive for CK7, progesterone receptor (PR), estrogen receptor (ER), androgen receptor (AR), vimentin, CA-125 and S-100 protein. The cells did not stain for CK20 and CD10. Morphological and immunohistochemical features suggested a mullerian differentiation, possibly originated from vestigial remnants of the Muller duct. This tumor is one of the rare benign lesions which should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a swelling in the epididymal region.

Primary signet-ring cell carcinoma of the prostate

We report on an uncommon case of primary prostatic signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) in a 78-year-old man. His prostatic specific antigen (PSA) level at presentation was 9.8 ng/ml. Histologically the tumor had a signet-ring morphology. Detailed immunohistochemical studies confirmed the prostatic origin of this neoplasm. All mucin stains were negative. This aggressive tumor is a distinct variant of primary prostatic carcinoma which should be distinguished from artefactual vacuolation of the tumor and metastatic disease.
