Why do Si quantum dots with stronger fast emission have lower external photoluminescence quantum yield?

Silicon quantum dots (QDs) are a promising non-toxic alternative to the already well-developed platform of light-emitting semiconductor QDs based on III-V and II-VI materials. Oxidized SiQDs or those surface-terminated with long alkyl chains typically feature long-lived orange-red photoluminescence originating in quantum-confined core states. However, sometimes an additional short-lived PL band, whose mechanism is still highly debated, is reported. Here, we perform a detailed study of the room-temperature PL of SiQDs using samples covering three main fabrication techniques. We find evidence for the presence of only one set of radiative processes in addition to the typical long-lived PL. Moreover, we experimentally determine the ratio between the short- and long-lived PL component, obtaining a wide range of values (0.003 - 0.1) depending on the type of sample. In accordance with an already published report, we observe a tendency of SiQDs with stronger short-lived PL to have lower external quantum yield. We explain this trend using a model of the optical performance of an ensemble of QDs with widely varying optical characteristics through a mechanism we call selective lifetime-based quenching.

Synthesis of cyclobutane-fused chromanones via gold-mediated photocatalysis

Energy transfer (EnT) photocatalysis has emerged as a valuable tool for constructing complex organic scaffolds via [2 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions. Herein, we present the use of [Au(SIPr)(Cbz)] as a sensitizer for the [2 + 2]-cycloaddition of coumarins and unactivated alkenes. Widely used in EnT catalysis, iridium and organic sensitizers proved less efficient under the examined catalytic conditions. The developed protocol permits the synthesis of cyclobutane-fused chromanones from readily available starting materials. A wide range of alkenes and substituted coumarins, including naturally occurring compounds, were reacted under mild conditions leading to structurally complex products with good functional group tolerance. Mechanistic studies reveal a previously overlooked reaction pathway for energy transfer catalysis involving coumarins.

Modulation of the Excited States of Ruthenium(II)-perylene Dyad to Access Near-IR Luminescence, Long-Lived Perylene Triplet State and Singlet Oxygen Photosensitization

Herein, we present a novel ruthenium(II)-perylene dyad (RuPDI-Py) that combines the photophysical properties of pyrrolidine-substituted perylene diimide (PDI-Py) and the ruthenium(II) polypyridine complex [Ru(phen)3]2+. A comprehensive study of excited-state dynamics was carried out using time-resolved and steady-state methods in a dimethyl sulfoxide solution. The RuPDI-Py dyad demonstrated excitation wavelength-dependent photophysical behavior. Upon photoexcitation above 600 nm, the dyad exclusively exhibits the near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence of the 1PDI-Py state at 785 nm (τfl = 1.50 ns). In contrast, upon photoexcitation between 350 and 450 nm, the dyad also exhibits a photoinduced electron transfer from the {[Ru(phen)3]2+} moiety to PDI-Py, generating the charge-separated intermediate state {Ru(III)-(PDI-Py)•-} (4 μs). This state subsequently decays to the long-lived triplet excited state 3PDI-Py (36 μs), which is able to sensitize singlet oxygen (1O2). Overall, tuning 1O2 photoactivation or NIR fluorescence makes RuPDI-Py a promising candidate for using absorbed light energy to perform the desired functions in theranostic applications.

Solvent and alkyl substitution effects on charge-transfer mediated triplet state generation in BODIPY dyads: a combined computational and experimental study

Donor-acceptor dyads based on BODIPYs have been recently employed to enhance the formation of triplet excited states with the process of spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC) which does not require introduction of transition metals or other heavy atoms into the molecule. In this work we compare two donor-acceptor dyads based on meso-naphthalenyl BODIPY by combining experimental and computational investigations. The photophysical and electrochemical characterization reveals a significant effect of alkylation of the BODIPY core, disfavoring the SOCT-ISC mechanism for the ethylated BODIPY dyad. This is complemented with a computational investigation carried out to rationalize the influence of ethyl substituents and solvent effects on the electronic structure and efficiency of triplet state population via charge recombination (CR) from the photoinduced electron transfer (PeT) generated charge-transfer (CT) state. Time dependent-density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations including solvent effects and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) calculations uncover the combined role played by solvent and alkyl substitution on the lateral positions of BODIPY.

"The Sulfur Dance" Around Arenes and Heteroarenes - the Reversible Nature of Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitutions

We disclose the features of a category of reversible nucleophilic aromatic substitutions in view of their significance and generality in dynamic aromatic chemistry. Exchange of sulfur components surrounding arenes and heteroarenes may occur at 25 °C, in a process that one may call a "sulfur dance". These SN Ar systems present their own features, apart from common reversible reactions utilized in dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC). By varying conditions, covalent dynamics may operate to provide libraries of thiaarenes with some selectivity, or conversion of a hexa(thio)benzene asterisk into another one. The reversible nature of SN Ar is confirmed by three methods: a convergence of the products distribution in reversible SN Ar systems, a related product redistribution between two per(thio)benzenes by using a thiolate promoter, and from kinetic/thermodynamic data. A four-component dynamic covalent system further illustrates the thermodynamically-driven formation of a thiacalix[2]arene[2]pyrimidine by sulfur component exchanges. This work stimulates the implementation of reversible SN Ar in aromatic chemistry and in DCC.

Developing the next generation of renewable energy technologies: an overview of low-TRL EU-funded research projects

A cluster of eleven research and innovation projects, funded under the same call of the EU's H2020 programme, are developing breakthrough and game-changing renewable energy technologies that will form the backbone of the energy system by 2030 and 2050 are, at present, at an early stage of development. These projects have joined forces at a collaborative workshop, entitled ' Low-TRL Renewable Energy Technologies', at the 10th Sustainable Places Conference (SP2022), to share their insights, present their projects' progress and achievements to date, and expose their approach for exploitation and market uptake of their solutions.

Elucidating the Excited State Behavior of Pyridyl Pyridinium Systems via Computational and Transient Absorption Studies of Tetrahedral Multichromophoric Arrays and their Model Compounds

The tetrahedral shape-persistent molecule 14+ , containing four identical pyridyl pyridinium units connected via a sp3 hybridized carbon atom, has been investigated in detail by means of steady-state and time resolved spectroscopy. Remarkable photophysical properties are observed, particularly in comparison with protonated and methylated analogues (1H4 8+ , 1Me4 8+ ), which exhibit substantially shorter excited state lifetimes and lower emission quantum yields. Theoretical studies have rationalized the behavior of the tetrameric molecules relative to the monomers, with DFT and TD-DFT calculations corroborating steady-state (absorption and emission) and transient absorption spectra. The behavior of the monomeric compounds (each consisting in one of the four identical subunits of the tetramers, i. e., 2+ , 2H2+ and 2Me2+ ) considerably differs from that of the tetramers, indicating a strong electronic interaction between the subunits in the tetrameric species, likely promoted by the homoconjugation through the connecting sp3  C atom. 2+ is characterized by a peculiar S1 -S2 excited state inversion, whereas the short-lived emitting S1 state of 2H2+ and 2Me2+ exhibits a partial charge-transfer character, as substantiated by spectro-electrochemical studies. Among the six investigated systems, only 14+ is a sizeable luminophore (Φem =0.15), which is related to the peculiar features of its singlet state.

Electrochemical C(sp3)-H functionalization of ethers via hydrogen-atom transfer by means of cathodic reduction

The chemo- and stereoselective electrochemical allylation/alkylation of ethers is presented via a C(sp³)-H activation event. The electrosynthetic protocol enables the realization of a large library of functionalized ethers (35 examples) in high yields (up to 84%) via cathodic activation of a new type of redox-active carbonate (RAC), capable of triggering HAT (Hydrogen-Atom-Transfer) events through the generation of electrophilic oxy radicals. The process displayed high functional group tolerance and mild reaction conditions. A mechanistic elucidation via voltammetric analysis completes the study.

A high-sensitivity long-lifetime phosphorescent RIE additive to probe free volume-related phenomena in polymers

The photophysical behaviour of phosphorescent rigidification-induced emission (RIE) dyes is highly affected by their micro- and nanoenvironment. The lifetime measure of RIE dyes dispersed in polymers represents an effective approach to gain valuable information on polymer free volume and thus develop materials potentially able to self-monitor physical ageing and mechanical stresses.

NIR-emissive, singlet-oxygen-sensitizing gold tetra(thiocyano)corroles

Presented herein are two fully characterized gold tetrathiocyanocorroles representing a potentially significant new class of NIR-emissive 5d-metallocorroles. The four SCN groups on the bipyrrole unit of the corrole exert a powerful electron-withdrawing effect, upshifting both the oxidation and reduction potentials by roughly half a volt relative to their unsubstituted counterparts. That said, the upshift of the LUMO is somewhat higher than that of the HOMO so these complexes also exhibit a smaller HOMO-LUMO gap, as evinced in both electrochemical measurements and Q band energies (∼595 nm relative to ∼571 nm for their SCN-free counterparts). The new compounds exhibit NIR phosphorescence under ambient conditions with emission maxima around 900 nm (compared with 790 nm for simple Au triarylcorroles), phosphorescence quantum yields around 0.3%, phosphorescence lifetimes around 10 μs, and singlet oxygen sensitization with a quantum yield of around 50 ± 5% in solution, together signifying wide-ranging potential applications as triplet photosensitizers in oxygen sensing and photodynamic therapy.

Moving Beyond Cyanoarene Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Compounds as Photocatalysts: An Assessment of the Performance of a Pyrimidyl Sulfone Photocatalyst in Comparison to 4CzIPN

Carbazolyl dicyanobenzene (CDCB) derivates exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) have shown themselves to be excellent photocatalysts over recent years, particularly 4CzIPN, although investigation into organic TADF compounds as photocatalysts outside of the CDCB group has been limited. Herein, we report an alternative donor-acceptor TADF structure, 9,9'-(sulfonylbis(pyrimidine-5,2-diyl))bis(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazole), pDTCz-DPmS, for use as a photocatalyst (PC). A comparison of the electrochemical and photophysical properties of pDTCz-DPmS with 4CzIPN in a range of solvents identifies the former as a better ground state reducing agent and photoreductant, while both exhibit similar oxidation capabilities in the ground and excited state. The increased conjugation of pDTCz-DPmS relative to 4CzIPN presents a more intense CT band in the UV-vis absorption spectrum, aiding in the light absorption of this molecule. Prompt and delayed emission lifetimes are observed for pDTCz-DPmS, confirming the TADF nature, both of which are sufficiently long-lived to participate in productive photochemistry. These combined properties make pDTCz-DPmS useful in photocatalysis reactions, covering a range of photoredox oxidative and reductive quenching reactions, as well as those involving a dual Ni(II) cocatalyst, alongside energy transfer processes. The higher triplet energy and increased photostability of pDTCz-DPmS compared with 4CzIPN were found to be advantages of this organic PC.

Personal Health Budget: a new rehabilitation approach for severe mental illness within a caring community

Introduction

Personal Health Budget (PHB) has been provided to consumers with severe mental illness within a policy shift toward a person-tailored mental healthcare treatment based on individual unmet needs. PHB is an amount of money to support patient’s health and wellbeing needs, which is planned and agreed between patients and their local NHS team. It is not new money, but it may mean spending money differently so that patients can get the care that they need. However, evidence of beneficial effects of PHB is still scarce.

Objectives

The aim of this study was to provide preliminary data on clinical and social benefits of adding PHB to a standard pharmacotherapy in patients with severe mental illness across a 24-month follow-up period.

Methods

137 individuals with severe mental illness (aged 18–50 years) were recruited in one of the adult mental health services of an Italian Department of Mental Health. They completed the Global Assessment of Functioning scale, the Health of the Nation Outcome Scale and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. Friedman’s test for repeated measure was used to assess the longitudinal stability of functioning and clinical parameters. A linear regression analysis was also performed.

Results

A significant decrease in all GAF scale, HoNOS and BPRS scores along the 24 months of follow-up was observed. Regression analysis results specifically showed a relevant association between a PHB multiaxial intervention and the longitudinal reduction in BPRS ‘Negative Symptoms’ and HoNOS ‘Social Problems’ subscores.

Conclusions

Our findings support the useful implementation of a PHB approach for severe mental illness patients within the Italian mental health service network.

Diastereoselective and enantioselective photoredox pinacol coupling promoted by titanium complexes with a red-absorbing organic dye

The pinacol coupling reaction, a reductive coupling of carbonyl compounds that proceeds through the formation of ketyl radicals in the presence of an electron donor, affords the corresponding 1,2-diols in one single step. The photoredox version of this transformation has been accomplished using different organic dyes or photoactive metal complexes in the presence of sacrificial donors such as tertiary amines or Hantzsch's ester. Normally, the homo-coupling of such reactive ketyl radicals is neither diastereo- nor enantio-selective. Herein, we report a highly diastereoselective pinacol coupling reaction of aromatic aldehydes promoted by 5 mol% of the non-toxic, inexpensive and available Cp₂TiCl₂ complex. The key feature that allows the complete control of diastereoselectivity is the employment of a red-absorbing organic dye in the presence of a redox-active titanium complex. Taking advantage of the well-tailored photoredox potential of this organic dye, the selective reduction of Ti(iv) to Ti(iii) is achieved. These conditions enable the formation of the d,l (syn) diastereoisomer as the favored product of the pinacol coupling (d.r. > 20 : 1 in most of the cases). Moreover, employing a simply prepared chiral SalenTi complex, the new photoredox reaction gave a complete diastereoselection for the d,l diastereoisomer, and high enantiocontrol (up to 92% of enantiomeric excess).

A metallaphotoredox, diastereoselective and enantioselective pinacol coupling reaction promoted by titanium complexes with the use of a red-absorbing organic dye was developed.

Light-harvesting antennae based on copper indium sulfide (CIS) quantum dots

Copper indium sulfide quantum dots (CIS QDs) and their core-shell analogues (CIS@ZnS QDs) were functionalized with pyrene chromophores via a dihydrolipoamide bifunctional binding moiety: UV excitation of the pyrene chromophores resulted in sensitized emission of the CIS core because of an efficient energy transfer process; the core-shell hybrid system exhibits a 50% increased brightness when excited at 345 nm.

Boosting Gold(I) Catalysis via Weak Interactions: New Fine-Tunable Impy Ligands

A series of modular ImPy-carbene-Au(I) complexes are synthesized and fully characterized both in the solid state and in solution. The presence of oligoaryl units (phenyl and thienyl rings) at the C5-position of the ImPy core (in close proximity to the gold center) imprints on the organometallic species fine-tunable and predictable catalytic properties. A marked accelerating effect was recorded in several [Au(I)]-catalyzed electrophilic activations of unsaturated hydrocarbons when a CF₃-containing aromatic ring was accommodated at the ImPy core.

Nickel Mediated Enantioselective Photoredox Allylation of Aldehydes with Visible Light

Here we report a practical, highly enantioselective photoredox allylation of aldehydes mediated by chiral nickel complexes with commercially available allyl acetate as the allylating agent. The methodology allows the clean stereoselective allylation of aldehydes in good to excellent yields and up to 93% e.e. using a catalytic amount of NiCl 2 (glyme) in the presence of the chiral aminoindanol-derived bis(oxazoline) as the chiral ligand. The photoredox system is constituted by the organic dye 3DPAFIPN and a Hantzsch's ester as the sacrificial reductant. The reaction proceeds under visible light irradiation (blue LEDs, 456 nm) at 8-12 °C with excellent stereoselectivities. Compared to other published procedures, no metal reductants (such as Zn or Mn), additives (e.g. CuI) or air-sensitive Ni(COD) 2 are necessary for this reaction. Accurate DFT calculations and photophysical experiments have clarified the mechanistic picture of this stereoselective allylation reaction showing a key role played by Hantzsch's ester for the turnover of the catalyst.

Giant Shape-Persistent Tetrahedral Porphyrin System: Light-Induced Charge Separation

Tetraphenylmethane appended with four pyridylpyridinium units works as a scaffold to self‐assemble four ruthenium porphyrins in a tetrahedral shape‐persistent giant architecture. The resulting supramolecular structure has been characterised in the solid state by X‐ray single crystal analysis and in solution by various techniques. Multinuclear NMR spectroscopy confirms the 1 : 4 stoichiometry with the formation of a highly symmetric structure. The self‐assembly process can be monitored by changes of the redox potentials, as well as by modifications in the visible absorption spectrum of the ruthenium porphyrin and by a complete quenching of both the bright fluorescence of the tetracationic scaffold and the weak phosphorescence of the ruthenium porphyrin. An ultrafast photoinduced electron transfer is responsible for this quenching process. The lifetime of the resulting charge separated state (800 ps) is about four times longer in the giant supramolecular structure compared to the model 1 : 1 complex formed by the ruthenium porphyrin and a single pyridylpyridinium unit. Electron delocalization over the tetrameric pyridinium structure is likely to be responsible for this effect.

Luminescent copper indium sulfide (CIS) quantum dots for bioimaging applications

Copper indium sulfide (CIS) quantum dots are ideal for bioimaging applications, by being characterized by high molar absorption coefficients throughout the entire visible spectrum, high photoluminescence quantum yield, high tolerance to the presence of lattice defects, emission tunability from the red to the near-infrared spectral region by changing their dimensions and composition, and long lifetimes (hundreds of nanoseconds) enabling time-gated detection to increase signal-to-noise ratio. The present review collects: (i) the most common procedures used to synthesize stable CIS QDs and the possible strategies to enhance their colloidal stability in aqueous environment, a property needed for bioimaging applications; (ii) their photophysical properties and parameters that affect the energy and brightness of their photoluminescence; (iii) toxicity and bioimaging applications of CIS QDs, including tumor targeting, time-gated detection and multimodal imaging, as well as theranostics. Future perspectives are analyzed in view of advantages and potential limitations of CIS QDs compared to most traditional QDs.

Luminescent silicon nanocrystals appended with photoswitchable azobenzene units

Confinement of multiple azobenzene chromophores covalently linked at the surface of luminescent silicon nanocrystals preserves the photoswitching behavior and modulates the nanocrystal polarity. Concomitantly, the thermal Z→E isomerization is strongly accelerated and the nanocrystal luminescence is reduced by an energy transfer process resulting in photosensitized E→Z isomerization.

Understanding the mechanism of direct visible-light-activated [2 + 2] cycloadditions mediated by Rh and Ir photocatalysts: combined computational and spectroscopic studies

The mechanism of [2 + 2] cycloadditions activated by visible light and catalyzed by bis-cyclometalated Rh(iii) and Ir(iii) photocatalysts was investigated, combining density functional theory calculations and spectroscopic techniques. Experimental observations show that the Rh-based photocatalyst produces excellent yield and enantioselectivity whereas the Ir-photocatalyst yields racemates. Two different mechanistic features were found to compete with each other, namely the direct photoactivation of the catalyst-substrate complex and outer-sphere triplet energy transfer. Our integrated analysis suggests that the direct photocatalysis is the inner working of the Rh-catalyzed reaction, whereas the Ir catalyst serves as a triplet sensitizer that activates cycloaddition via an outer-sphere triplet excited state energy transfer mechanism.

Design of BODIPY dyes as triplet photosensitizers: electronic properties tailored for solar energy conversion, photoredox catalysis and photodynamic therapy

BODIPYs are renowned fluorescent dyes with strong and tunable absorption in the visible region, high thermal and photo-stability and exceptional fluorescence quantum yields. Transition metal complexes are the most commonly used triplet photosensitisers, but, recently, the use of organic dyes has emerged as a viable and more sustainable alternative. By proper design, BODIPY dyes have been turned from highly fluorescent labels into efficient triplet photosensitizers with strong absorption in the visible region (from green to orange). In this perspective, we report three design strategies: (i) halogenation of the dye skeleton, (ii) donor-acceptor dyads and (iii) BODIPY dimers. We compare pros and cons of these approaches in terms of optical and electrochemical properties and synthetic viability. The potential applications of these systems span from energy conversion to medicine and key examples are presented.

Highly Emissive Water-Soluble Polysulfurated Pyrene-Based Chromophores as Dual Mode Sensors of Metal Ions

Pyrene-based materials have gained considerable attention as stimuli-responsive chemical sensors. We designed a polysulfurated arene system based on a tetra(phenylthio)pyrene core decorated with four carboxylic acid units. Three different regioisomers, ortho, meta and para were studied in organic and aqueous solution. These systems are soluble in water at pH≥8 due to the deprotonation of carboxylic acids. The addition of metal ions cannot only quench the fluorescence of the central pyrene core, but also control the formation of three-dimensional nanoscopic objects in a dual mode function. Several divalent metal ions were tested and compared. Addition of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) disassembles the non-emissive supramolecular system and restores the initial fluorescence of the pyrene core.

A supramolecular bifunctional iridium photoaminocatalyst for the enantioselective alkylation of aldehydes

The construction of a hybrid metal-organo-photoredox catalyst based on the conjugation of an imidazolidinone organocatalyst and Ir(ppy)2(bipy) (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, bipy = bipyridine) is described. The introduction of the desired organocatalyst into the bipyridine moiety is quite modular, allowing the preparation of different hybrid photocatalysts, and is realized though a simple click reaction. The hybrid photocatalysts obtained were employed in the benchmark photoredox alkylation of aldehydes. Remarkably, the conjugation of a first-generation MacMillan catalyst produces an active and stereoselective hybrid photoredox catalyst.

Amine functionalised silicon nanocrystals with bright red and long-lived emission

When functionalised with amines, silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) are known to have surface-state emission with loss of colour tunability, low quantum yield and short nanosecond lifetimes. These changes in optical properties are produced by direct amine bonding on the silicon surface. In this article, secondary amine functionalised SiNCs with bright, red (λmax = 750 nm) and long-lived emission (τ ca. 50 μs) are reported for the first time via a three-step synthetic approach. These SiNCs are colloidally stable in several polar solvents and can be further functionalised by reaction with carboxylic acid groups. We proved the feasibility of further functionalization with pyrene butyric acid: ca. 40 pyrene units per nanoparticle were attached via amide bond formation. The resulting hybrid system works as a light-harvesting antenna: excitation of pyrene units at 345 nm results in sensitised emission at 700 nm by the silicon core.

Water-soluble silicon nanocrystals as NIR luminescent probes for time-gated biomedical imaging

Luminescent probes based on silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) have many advantages for bioimaging compared to more conventional quantum dots: abundancy of silicon combined with its biocompatibility; tunability of the emission color of SiNCs in the red and NIR spectral region to gain deeper tissue penetration; long emission lifetimes of SiNCs (hundreds of μs) enabling time-gated acquisitions to avoid background noise caused by tissue autofluorescence and scattered excitation light. Here we report a new three-step synthesis, based on a low temperature thiol-ene click reaction that can afford SiNCs, colloidally stable in water, with preserved bright red and NIR photoluminescence (band maxima at 735 and 945 nm for nanocrystals with diameters of 4 and 5 nm, respectively) and long emission lifetimes. Their luminescence is insensitive to dioxygen and sensitive to pH changes in the physiological range, enabling pH sensing. In vivo studies demonstrated tumor accumulation, 48 hours clearance and a 3-fold improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio compared to steady-state imaging.

Pentasulfurated benzene-cored asterisks: relationship between crystal structure and luminescence properties

Pentasulfurated benzene chromophores are not luminescent in fluid solution and are phosphorescent in the solid state; in particular, the cyano-derivative which displays a bright orange luminescence.

One- and two-photon absorption properties of quadrupolar thiophene-based dyes with acceptors of varying strengths

The one-photon (1P) and two-photon (2P) absorption properties of three quadrupolar dyes, featuring thiophene as a donor and acceptors of varying strengths, are determined by a combination of experimental and computational methods employing the density functional theory (DFT). The emission shifts in different solvents are well reproduced by time-dependent DFT calculations with the linear response and state specific approaches in the framework of the polarizable continuum model. The calculations show that the energies of both 1P- and 2P-active states decrease with an increase of the strength of the acceptor. The 2P absorption cross-sections predicted by the response theory are accounted for by considering just one intermediate state (S1) in the sum-over-states formulation. For the chromophore featuring the stronger acceptor, the energetic positions of the 1P- and 2P-active states prevent the exploitation of the theoretically predicted very high 2P activity due to the competing 1P absorption into the S1 state.
