Abstract
OBJECTIVE to evaluate the association between psychological demands, control over the work and the reduction of work ability of nursing professionals. METHOD this cross-sectional study involved 498 nursing professionals of a university hospital in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Data collection was carried out in 2009 using the Brazilian versions of the Work Ability Index and Job Stress Scale, with logistic regression models used for the data analysis. RESULTS the prevalence of 43.3% for reduced work ability and 29.7% for high-strain in the job (high psychological demand and low control) were observed. The chances for professionals presenting reduced work ability under high-strain were higher and significant when compared to those classified as being under low-strain, even after adjusting for potential confounders, except for age and gender. CONCLUSION a high prevalence of reduced work ability was observed. This evidence indicates the need for investigation and detailed analysis of the psychosocial aspects of the professionals with regard to the health/disease process of nursing professionals.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the association between minor psychological disorders and the reduction of work capacity of nursing professionals. Epidemiological study (cross-sectional) involving 498 (84.1%) nursing professionals at a university hospital in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We used the Brazilian versions of the Work Ability Index and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20, with descriptive and multivariate analysis. The prevalence of minor psychological disorders and the reduction of work ability corresponded to 33.7% and 43.3%, respectively. The analyses adjusted due to confounding factors showed that nursing professionals with suspected minor psychological disorders were twice as likely to have their work ability reduced when compared to those without suspected minor psychological disorders. It is concluded that there is a positive association between minor psychological disorders and reduced work ability among the investigated professionals. Measures are needed to minimize the psychological demands and empower the work ability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE to analyze the effectiveness of auriculotherapy for decreasing anxiety and stress of perioperative nursing professionals. METHOD mixed methods research, embedded experimental model. In the quantitative stage, a randomized, triple-blind clinical trial was conducted with perioperative nursing professionals, who answered a characterization questionnaire, the List of Signs and Symptoms of Stress, and the General Anxiety Disorder-GAD 7. The participants attended eight auriculotherapy sessions with semi-permanent needles. The qualitative stage was exploratory and descriptive, in which data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Data were mixed with the incorporation of qualitative findings to examine the intervention in the experimental study. RESULTS 13 professionals participated in the intervention group and 14 in the control group. Anxiety and stress levels decreased significantly within groups, though no statistical difference was found between groups (p>0.05). The central category, "Auriculotherapy as an intervention to treat anxiety and stress," emerged from the qualitative data, which was subdivided into a base unit and three categories concerning the therapy's benefits. CONCLUSION applying real and sham auriculotherapy had the same effect on the participants' anxiety and stress levels; the reports reinforced such evidence. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as auriculotherapy, are essential for recovering and promoting the health of perioperative nursing professionals. Abstract
OBJECTIVE to analyze exposure to ergonomic risks and the occurrence of musculoskeletal pain in workers in the Hospital Cleaning Service. METHOD Convergent Care Research, with data production designed using mixed methods, implemented with 149 hospital cleaning workers. The methodological strategy of the convergent parallel project was employed, using observation, photographic records, questionnaires and convergence groups. The results were integrated through joint display. Data analysis with descriptive and inferential statistics and content analysis. RESULTS the mixing of data highlighted the multifactorial nature of exposure to ergonomic risks (uncomfortable work postures; repetitive movements; prolonged orthostatism; use of equipment not adapted to the psychophysiological needs of workers) and musculoskeletal pain in the population investigated. The latter was prevalent in the lumbar spine, ankles or feet, wrists or hands, thoracic spine and shoulders. The concept of ergonomic risk was expanded and was influenced by the psychosocial aspects of work. CONCLUSION the workers investigated are exposed to modifiable multifactorial ergonomic risks related to musculoskeletal pain. It is possible to promote innovations and teaching-learning actions to minimize them, such as the continuing education program, collectively constructed with recommendations for improvements.
