Planarization of tetracarboxamides: tuning the self-assembly of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

The geometry-dependent self-assembling features of two PAHs, 1 and 2, is reported. The more planar 1 forms H-type supramolecular polymers, in a highly cooperative fashion by combination of H-bonding and π-stacking, with rod-like morphology. However, the highly distorted 2 interacts only by means of H-bonding yielding lamellar supramolecular structures.

Synthesis and Structural Characterization of a Series of One-Dimensional Heteronuclear Dirhodium-Silver Coordination Polymers

Herein, we describe the preparation of heteronuclear dirhodium-silver complexes by reaction between molecular Rh(II)-Rh(II) compounds [Rh₂(μ-O₂CR)₄L₂] (R = Me, Ph (1), CH₂OEt (2); L = solvent molecules) with paddlewheel structure and PPh₄[Ag(CN)₂]. One-dimensional coordination polymers of (PPh₄)n[Rh₂(μ-O₂CR)₄Ag(CN)₂]n (R = Me (3), Ph (4), CH₂OEt (5)) formula have been obtained by replacement of the two labile molecules in the axial positions of the paddlewheel structures by a [Ag(CN)₂]- bridging unit. The crystal structures of 3⁻5 display a similar arrangement, having anionic chains with a wavy structure and bulky (PPh₄)⁺ cations placed between the chains. The presence of the (PPh₄)⁺ cations hinders the existence of intermolecular Ag-Ag interactions although several C-H····π interactions have been observed. A similar reaction between [Rh₂(μ-O₂CCMe₃)₄(HO₂CCMe₃)₂] and PPh₄[Ag(CN)₂] led to the molecular compound (PPh₄)₂{Rh₂(μ-O₂CCMe₃)₄[Ag(CN)₂]₂} (6) by replacement of the axial HO₂CCMe₃ ligands by two [Ag(CN)₂]- units. The trimethylacetate ligand increases the solubility of the complex during the crystallization favouring the formation of discrete heteronuclear species.

Regiospecific Synthesis and Structural Studies of 3,5-Dihydro-4H-pyrido[2,3-b][1,4]diazepin-4-ones and Comparison with 1,3-Dihydro-2H-benzo[b][1,4]diazepin-2-ones

Nine 3,5-dihydro-4H-pyrido[2,3-b][1,4]diazepin-4-ones (17-25), some of which contain fluoro-substituents, have been regiospecifically prepared by reaction of 2,3-diaminopyridines with ethyl aroylacetates. In two cases, open intermediates have been isolated and these are related to the reaction pathway. The X-ray crystal structure of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-3,5-dihydro-4H-pyrido[2,3-b][1,4]diazepin-4-one (23) has been solved (formula, C₁₅H₁₃N₃O; crystal system, monoclinic; space group, C2/c). This is an asymmetric unit constituted by a single nonplanar molecule and its conformational enantiomer due to the presence of the seven-membered diazepin-2-one moiety, which introduces a certain degree of torsion in the adjacent pyridine ring. The ¹H, ¹³C, ¹⁵N, and ¹⁹F NMR spectra were obtained and the chemical shifts, together with those of the previously published 1,3-dihydro-2H-benzo[b][1,4]diazepin-2-ones (1-16), i.e., a total of 544 values, were successfully compared with the chemical shifts calculated at the gauge invariant atomic orbital (GIAO)/Becke, three-parameter, Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p) level. The seven-membered ring inversion barrier in 5-benzyl-2-phenyl-3,5-dihydro-4H-pyrido[2,3-b][1,4]diazepin-4-one (25) was determined and, in conjunction with the data from the literature, compared with the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) computed values. This allowed the determination of several structural effects. The rotation about the exocyclic N1-CR bond was also calculated and its dynamic properties were discussed.

A structural analysis of 2,5-diaryl-4H-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ones: NMR in the solid state, X-ray crystallography, and GIPAW calculations

The ¹ H, ¹³ C, ¹⁵ N, and ¹⁹ F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of 11 2,5-diaryl-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ones have been acquired in DMSO-d₆ solution and the ¹³ C, ¹⁵ N, and ¹⁹ F NMR spectra have also been acquired in the solid state (solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance [SSNMR] and magic angle spinning [MAS]). The X-ray structures of Compounds 3, 5, and 6 have been determined by X-ray diffraction. Theoretical calculations at the gauge-independent atomic orbital (GIAO)/B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level have provided a set of 321 chemical shifts that were compared with 310 experimental values in DMSO-d₆ . To obtain good agreements, some effects need to be included. The SSNMR chemical shifts have been compared with gauge-including projector-augmented wave (GIPAW) calculations and with the heavy atom-light atom (HALA) effects.

Heteronuclear Dirhodium-Gold Anionic Complexes: Polymeric Chains and Discrete Units

In this article, we report on the synthesis and characterization of the tetracarboxylatodirhodium(II) complexes [Rh2(μ-O2CCH2OMe)4(THF)2] (1) and [Rh2(μ-O2CC6H4-p-CMe3)4(OH2)2] (2) by metathesis reaction of [Rh2(μ-O2CMe)4] with the corresponding ligand acting also as the reaction solvent. The reaction of the corresponding tetracarboxylato precursor, [Rh2(μ-O2CR)4], with PPh4[Au(CN)2] at room temperature, yielded the one-dimensional polymers (PPh4)n[Rh2(μ-O2CR)4Au(CN)2]n (R = Me (3), CH2OMe (4), CH2OEt (5)) and the non-polymeric compounds (PPh4)2{Rh2(μ-O2CR)4[Au(CN)2]2} (R = CMe3 (6), C6H4-p-CMe3 (7)). The structural characterization of 1, 3·2CH2Cl2, 4·3CH2Cl2, 5, 6, and 7·2OCMe2 is also provided with a detailed description of their crystal structures and intermolecular interactions. The polymeric compounds 3·2CH2Cl2, 4·3CH2Cl2, and 5 show wavy chains with Rh-Au-Rh and Rh-N-C angles in the ranges 177.18°-178.69° and 163.0°-170.4°, respectively. A comparative study with related rhodium-silver complexes previously reported indicates no significant influence of the gold or silver atoms in the solid-state arrangement of these kinds of complexes.

catena-Poly[[tetrakis(μ-3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoato-κ2 O:O′)diruthenium(II,III)(Ru—Ru)]-μ-chlorido] with an unknown solvent

[Ru2Cl{μ-O2CC6H2-3,4,5-(OMe)3}4] n was prepared by the reaction of [Ru2Cl(μ-O2CCH3] n with 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid. The complex shows a paddlewheel structure with pairs of Ru atoms bridged by four carboxylate ligands. The axial positions are occupied by shared chloride ions giving zigzag chains. These chains are disposed parallel to each other to give a three-dimensional arrangement packed only by van der Waals forces. The final refinement shows high values of residual non-modelled electronic density. Therefore, the SQUEEZE utility [Spek (2015). Acta Cryst. C71, 9–18] was used to remove its contribution to the overal intensity data. The electron density modelled by SQUEEZE is consistent with around eight water molecules per unit cell.

Tetracarbonatodiruthenium Fragments and Lanthanide(III) Ions as Building Blocks to Construct 2D Coordination Polymers

Two-dimensional coordination polymers of [Pr(DMSO)₂(OH₂)₃][Ru₂(CO₃)₄(DMSO)(OH₂)]·5H₂O (Prα) and [Ln(OH₂)₅][Ru₂(CO₃)₄(DMSO)]·xH₂O (Ln = Sm (Smβ), Gd (Gdβ)) formulae have been obtained by reaction of the corresponding Ln(NO₃)₃·6H₂O dissolved in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and K₃[Ru₂(CO₃)₄]·4H₂O dissolved in water. Some DMSO molecules are coordinated to the metal atoms reducing the possibilities of connection between the [Ru₂(CO₃)₄]³⁻ and Ln³⁺ building blocks giving rise to the formation of two-dimensional networks. The size of the Ln³⁺ ion and the synthetic method seem to have an important influence in the type of two-dimensional structure obtained. Slow diffusion of the reagents gives rise to Prα that forms a 2D net that is built by Ln³⁺ ions as triconnected nodes and two types of Ru₂⁵⁺ units as bi- and tetraconnected nodes with (2-c)(3-c)₂(4-c) stoichiometry (α structure). An analogous synthetic procedure gives Smβ and Gdβ that display a grid-like structure, (2-c)₂(4-c)₂, formed by biconnected Ln³⁺ ions and two types of tetraconnected Ru₂⁵⁺ fragments (β structure). The magnetic properties of these compounds are basically explained as the sum of the individual contributions of diruthenium and lanthanide species, although canted ferrimagnetism or weak ferromagnetism are observed at low temperature.
