Vadose-zone alteration of metaschoepite and ceramic UO2 in Savannah River Site field lysimeters

Uranium dioxide (UO₂) and metaschoepite (UO₃•nH₂O) particles have been identified as contaminants at nuclear sites. Understanding their behavior and impact is crucial for safe management of radioactively contaminated land and to fully understand U biogeochemistry. The Savannah River Site (SRS) (South Carolina, USA), is one such contaminated site, following historical releases of U-containing wastes to the vadose zone. Here, we present an insight into the behavior of these two particle types under dynamic conditions representative of the SRS, using field lysimeters (15 cm D x 72 cm L). Discrete horizons containing the different particle types were placed at two depths in each lysimeter (25 cm and 50 cm) and exposed to ambient rainfall for 1 year, with an aim of understanding the impact of dynamic, shallow subsurface conditions on U particle behavior and U migration. The dissolution and migration of U from the particle sources and the speciation of U throughout the lysimeters was assessed after 1 year using a combination of sediment digests, sequential extractions, and bulk and μ-focus X-ray spectroscopy. In the UO₂ lysimeter, oxidative dissolution of UO₂ and subsequent migration of U was observed over 1-2 cm in the direction of waterflow and against it. Sequential extractions of the UO₂ sources suggest they were significantly altered over 1 year. The metaschoepite particles also showed significant dissolution with marginally enhanced U migration (several cm) from the sources. However, in both particle systems the released U was quantitively retained in sediment as a range of different U(IV) and U(VI) phases, and no detectable U was measured in the lysimeter effluent. The study provides a useful insight into U particle behavior in representative, real-world conditions relevant to the SRS, and highlights limited U migration from particle sources due to secondary reactions with vadose zone sediments over 1 year.

Particulate plutonium released from the Fukushima Daiichi meltdowns

Traces of Pu have been detected in material released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) in March of 2011; however, to date the physical and chemical form of the Pu have remained unknown. Here we report the discovery of particulate Pu associated with cesium-rich microparticles (CsMPs) that formed in and were released from the reactors during the FDNPP meltdowns. The Cs-pollucite-based CsMP contained discrete U(IV)O₂ nanoparticles, <~10 nm, one of which is enriched in Pu adjacent to fragments of Zr-cladding. The isotope ratios, ²³⁵U/²³⁸U, ²⁴⁰Pu/²³⁹Pu, and ²⁴²Pu/²³⁹Pu, of the CsMPs were determined to be ~0.0193, ~0.347, and ~0.065, respectively, which are consistent with the calculated isotopic ratios of irradiated-fuel fragments. Thus, considering the regional distribution of CsMPs, the long-distance dispersion of Pu from FNDPP is attributed to the transport by CsMPs that have incorporated nanoscale fuel fragments prior to their dispersion up to 230 km away from the Fukushima Daiichi reactor site.

Hierarchical Porous Wood Cellulose Scaffold with Atomically Dispersed Pt Catalysts for Low-Temperature Ethylene Decomposition

Despite the excellent catalytic properties of individual nanoparticles and atomic clusters, the current capabilities to assemble them into a complex system are insufficient for many practical applications. An objective of this work is to develop a fabrication technology that allows for the simultaneous control of the nanoparticle surface chemistry, elemental distribution, microscale geometry, and large-scale assembly. Using a cellulose structure derived from wood, we fabricate hierarchical porous cellulose scaffolds combining with cerium-doped TiO₂. This hybrid material serves as the support for atomically dispersed Pt catalysts and is used to successfully decompose ethylene at 0 °C. The fabrication concept developed in this work would allow mitigating the conflict between the required large active surfaces and the difficulties in handling nanopowders in environmental catalysis, including food preservation and indoor air purification. We thus discover a promising route to manufacture multifunctional materials with complex structures by combining a controllable chemical synthesis with the nature-designed wood scaffold.

Nanoparticle-Based Magnetoelectric BaTiO3-CoFe2O4 Thin Film Heterostructures for Voltage Control of Magnetism

Multiferroic composite materials combining ferroelectric and ferromagnetic order at room temperature have great potential for emerging applications such as four-state memories, magnetoelectric sensors, and microwave devices. In this paper, we report an effective and facile liquid phase deposition route to create multiferroic composite thin films involving the spin-coating of nanoparticle dispersions of BaTiO₃, a well-known ferroelectric, and CoFe₂O₄, a highly magnetostrictive material. This approach offers great flexibility in terms of accessible film configurations (co-dispersed as well as layered films), thicknesses (from 100 nm to several μm) and composition (5-50 wt % CoFe₂O₄ with respect to BaTiO₃) to address various potential applications. A detailed structural characterization proves that BaTiO₃ and CoFe₂O₄ remain phase-separated with clear interfaces on the nanoscale after heat treatment, while electrical and magnetic studies indicate the simultaneous presence of both ferroelectric and ferromagnetic order. Furthermore, coupling between these orders within the films is demonstrated with voltage control of the magnetism at ambient temperatures.

Entanglement and manipulation of the magnetic and spin-orbit order in multiferroic Rashba semiconductors

Entanglement of the spin–orbit and magnetic order in multiferroic materials bears a strong potential for engineering novel electronic and spintronic devices. Here, we explore the electron and spin structure of ferroelectric α-GeTe thin films doped with ferromagnetic Mn impurities to achieve its multiferroic functionality. We use bulk-sensitive soft-X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) to follow hybridization of the GeTe valence band with the Mn dopants. We observe a gradual opening of the Zeeman gap in the bulk Rashba bands around the Dirac point with increase of the Mn concentration, indicative of the ferromagnetic order, at persistent Rashba splitting. Furthermore, subtle details regarding the spin–orbit and magnetic order entanglement are deduced from spin-resolved ARPES measurements. We identify antiparallel orientation of the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic polarization, and altering of the Rashba-type spin helicity by magnetic switching. Our experimental results are supported by first-principles calculations of the electron and spin structure.

In α-GeTe, ferroelectric polarization acts to break inversion symmetry of the lattice and induce a strong Rashba-type spin splitting of the electronic band structure. Here, the authors study how this effect competes with Zeeman splitting due to ferromagnetic exchange coupling in Mn-doped GeTe.

Additive interfacial chiral interaction in multilayers for stabilization of small individual skyrmions at room temperature

Facing the ever-growing demand for data storage will most probably require a new paradigm. Nanoscale magnetic skyrmions are anticipated to solve this issue as they are arguably the smallest spin textures in magnetic thin films in nature. We designed cobalt-based multilayered thin films in which the cobalt layer is sandwiched between two heavy metals and so provides additive interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMIs), which reach a value close to 2 mJ m(-2) in the case of the Ir|Co|Pt asymmetric multilayers. Using a magnetization-sensitive scanning X-ray transmission microscopy technique, we imaged small magnetic domains at very low fields in these multilayers. The study of their behaviour in a perpendicular magnetic field allows us to conclude that they are actually magnetic skyrmions stabilized by the large DMI. This discovery of stable sub-100 nm individual skyrmions at room temperature in a technologically relevant material opens the way for device applications in the near future.

Single domain spin manipulation by electric fields in strain coupled artificial multiferroic nanostructures

We demonstrate in situ 90° electric field-induced uniform magnetization rotation in single domain submicron ferromagnetic islands grown on a ferroelectric single crystal using x-ray photoemission electron microscopy. The experimental findings are well correlated with micromagnetic simulations, showing that the reorientation occurs by the strain-induced magnetoelectric interaction between the ferromagnetic nanostructures and the ferroelectric crystal. Specifically, the ferroelectric domain structure plays a key role in determining the response of the structure to the applied electric field, resulting in three strain-induced regimes of magnetization behavior for the single domain islands.

Nonadiabatic spin transfer torque in high anisotropy magnetic nanowires with narrow domain walls

Current induced domain wall (DW) depinning of a narrow DW in out-of-plane magnetized (Pt/Co)_{3}/Pt multilayer elements is studied by magnetotransport. We find that for conventional measurements Joule heating effects conceal the real spin torque efficiency and so we use a measurement scheme at a constant sample temperature to unambiguously extract the spin torque contribution. From the variation of the depinning magnetic field with the current pulse amplitude we directly deduce the large nonadiabaticity factor in this material and we find that its amplitude is consistent with a momentum transfer mechanism.

Perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy in tetragonally distorted Fe-Co alloys

We report on the experimental realization of tetragonal Fe-Co alloys as a constituent of Fe0.36Co0.64/Pt superlattices with huge perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, reaching 210 microeV/atom, and a saturation magnetization of 2.5 microB/atom at 40 K, in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions. At room temperature the corresponding values and are achieved. This suggests that Fe-Co alloys with carefully chosen combinations of composition and distortion are good candidates for high-density perpendicular storage materials.
