Far-travelled 3700 km lateral magma propagation just below the surface of Venus

The Great Dyke of Atla Regio (GDAR) is traced for ~3700 km on Venus, as a surface graben (narrow trough) interpreted to overlie a continuous laterally-emplaced underlying mafic dyke (vertical magma-filled crack). The GDAR belongs to a giant radiating dyke swarm associated with Ozza Mons (volcano), Atla Regio plume, and was fed from a magma reservoir ~600 km south of the Ozza Mons centre. A 50-degree counter-clockwise swing of the GDAR at 1200 km from the centre is consistent with a 1200 km radius for the underlying Ozza Mons plume head, and a stress link to the 10,000 km long Parga Chasmata rift system. Our discovery of the GDAR, should spur the search for additional long continuous single dykes on Venus (and Earth), with implications for estimating plume head size, locating buffered magma reservoirs, mapping regional stress variation at a geological instant, and revealing relative ages (through cross-cutting relationships) over regional-scale distances.

Tesserae on Venus may preserve evidence of fluvial erosion

Fluvial erosion is usually assumed to be absent on Venus, precluded by a high surface temperature of ~450 °C and supported by extensive uneroded volcanic flows. However, recent global circulation models suggest the possibility of Earth-like climatic conditions on Venus for much of its earlier history, prior to catastrophic runaway greenhouse warming. We observe that the stratigraphically oldest, geologically most complex units, tesserae, exhibit valley patterns morphologically similar to the patterns resulting from fluvial erosion on Earth. Given poor topographic resolution, we use an indirect technique to recognize valleys, based on the pattern of lava flooding of tesserae margins by adjacent plains volcanism. These observed valley patterns are attributed to primary geology, tectonic deformation, followed by fluvial erosion (and lesser wind erosion). This proposed fluvial erosion in tesserae provides support for climate models for a cool, wet climate on early Venus and could be an attractive research theme for future Venus missions.

Integrated Paleomagnetism and U-Pb Geochronology of Mafic Dikes of the Eastern Anabar Shield Region, Siberia: Implications for Mesoproterozoic Paleolatitude of Siberia and Comparison with Laurentia

This article reports the first joint paleomagnetic and U-Pb geochronologic study of Precambrian diabase dikes in the Anabar Shield and adjacent Riphean cover of Siberia. It was undertaken to allow comparison with similar published studies in Laurentia and to test Proterozoic reconstructions of Siberia and Laurentia. An east-trending Kuonamka dike yielded a provisional U-Pb baddeleyite emplacement age of 1503+/-5 Ma and a virtual geomagnetic pole at 16 degrees S, 221 degrees E (dm=17&j0;, dp=10&j0;). A paleomagnetic pole at 6 degrees N, 234 degrees E (dm=28&j0;, dp=14&j0;) was obtained from five Kuonamka dikes. An east-southeast-trending Chieress dike yielded a U-Pb baddeleyite emplacement age of 1384+/-2 Ma and a virtual geomagnetic pole at 4 degrees N, 258 degrees E (dm=9&j0;, dp=5&j0;). Kuonamka and Chieress poles are interpreted to be primary but do not average out secular variation. Assuming that the Siberian Plate has remained intact since the Mesoproterozoic, except for mid-Paleozoic opening of the Viljuy Rift, then the above results indicate that the Siberian Plate was in low latitudes at ca. 1503 and 1384 Ma, broadly similar to low latitudes determined for Laurentia from well-dated paleopoles at 1460-1420, 1320-1290, and 1267 Ma. This would allow Laurentia and Siberia to have been attached in the Mesoproterozoic, as suggested in several recent studies based on geological criteria. However, because paleomagnetic results from the Anabar Shield region do not average out secular variation and the ages of poles from Siberia and Laurentia are not well matched, it is not yet possible to distinguish between these reconstructions or to rule out other configurations that also maintain the two cratons at low paleolatitudes.

The genetic program of hematopoietic stem cells

Blood cell production originates from a rare population of multipotent, self-renewing stem cells. A genome-wide gene expression analysis was performed in order to define regulatory pathways in stem cells as well as their global genetic program. Subtracted complementary DNA libraries from highly purified murine fetal liver stem cells were analyzed with bioinformatic and array hybridization strategies. A large percentage of the several thousand gene products that have been characterized correspond to previously undescribed molecules with properties suggestive of regulatory functions. The complete data, available in a biological process-oriented database, represent the molecular phenotype of the hematopoietic stem cell.

Phylogenetic footprinting of the human cytochrome c oxidase subunit VB promoter

The human COX5B gene encodes subunit Vb of cytochrome c oxidase (COX). COX Vb is 1 of the 10 subunits of the mitochondrial COX complex encoded by a nuclear gene. We have defined a region in the human COX5B promoter essential for gene expression and shown by phylogenetic footprinting of 11 primate COX5B promoters that many cis-regulatory elements in this region are evolutionarily conserved. The transcription start site of human COX5B was mapped 58 bp upstream of the initiation Met codon by primer extension using a thermostable reverse transcriptase. A 475-bp region (-456 to +20) of the human COX5B gene was shown to function as a promoter for the chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT) gene in expression vectors when transfected into HeLa cells. The human COX5B gene is located in a CpG island and contains several potential binding sites for the transcription factor Sp1, but no consensus TATA box element. Several sequence elements associated with the transcriptional regulation of respiratory genes were also found in the promoter and 5' flanking region, including a single NRF-1 site and two 9-bp direct repeats containing binding sites for ets-domain proteins, such as NRF-2/GABP. Many features of the human COX5B promoter are conserved in the COX5B promoters of primates, in particular, the presence of a single binding site for NRF-1 and multiple sites for Sp1 and NRF-2/GABP. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays demonstrate that the conserved NRF-1 site in primate COX5B promoters is specifically recognized by a factor present in HeLa nuclear extracts. Phylogenetic footprinting has identified additional conserved elements that may also function as binding sites for regulatory factors.
