Experimental Study and Modeling of the UV-Vis and Infrared Spectra of the [VO(O2)Hheida]- Complex Dissolved in Water

Combined theoretical and experimental studies of the [VO(O₂)Hheida]^- anion dissolved in water that may serve as a functional model for vanadium haloperoxidase enzymes have been performed. The geometrical structure and absorption and vibrational spectra of this system have been evaluated within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). The obtained theoretical results on the equilibrium structure and optical spectra are in quite good agreement with the experimental data. With the aid of the combination of UV-visible spectroscopy and electronic structure calculations, it has been revealed that, in the apparent absorption spectra of the [VO(O₂)Hheida]^- anion, the highest in energy band corresponds to a ligand to metal electron excitation, while the band with a maximum at 430 nm arises from the peroxo group. The calculations also reproduce quite well the positions, intensities and the grouping of frequencies in the near-infrared (NIR) spectra. The visualization of the calculated vibrations in the energy range of 400-1100 cm^-1 has been presented.

Reversible Bulk Oxidation of Ni Foil During Oscillatory Catalytic Oxidation of Propane: A Novel Type of Spatiotemporal Self-Organization

A novel type of temporal and spatial self-organization in a heterogeneous catalytic reaction is described for the first time. Using in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and mass spectrometry, we show that, under certain conditions, self-sustained reaction-rate oscillations arise in the oxidation of propane over Ni foil because of reversible bulk oxidation of Ni to NiO, which can be observed even with the naked eye as chemical waves propagating over the catalyst surface.

The electronic structure of iridium oxide electrodes active in water splitting

Iridium oxide based electrodes are among the most promising candidates for electrocatalyzing the oxygen evolution reaction, making it imperative to understand their chemical/electronic structure. However, the complexity of iridium oxide's electronic structure makes it particularly difficult to experimentally determine the chemical state of the active surface species. To achieve an accurate understanding of the electronic structure of iridium oxide surfaces, we have combined synchrotron-based X-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopies with ab initio calculations. Our investigation reveals a pre-edge feature in the O K-edge of highly catalytically active X-ray amorphous iridium oxides that we have identified as O 2p hole states forming in conjunction with Ir(III). These electronic defects in the near-surface region of the anionic and cationic framework are likely critical for the enhanced activity of amorphous iridium oxides relative to their crystalline counterparts.

Atmospheric pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy apparatus: Bridging the pressure gap

One of the main goals in catalysis is the characterization of solid/gas interfaces in a reaction environment. The electronic structure and chemical composition of surfaces become heavily influenced by the surrounding environment. However, the lack of surface sensitive techniques that are able to monitor these modifications under high pressure conditions hinders the understanding of such processes. This limitation is known throughout the community as the "pressure gap." We have developed a novel experimental setup that provides chemical information on a molecular level under atmospheric pressure and in presence of reactive gases and at elevated temperatures. This approach is based on separating the vacuum environment from the high-pressure environment by a silicon nitride grid-that contains an array of micrometer-sized holes-coated with a bilayer of graphene. Using this configuration, we have investigated the local electronic structure of catalysts by means of photoelectron spectroscopy and in presence of gases at 1 atm. The reaction products were monitored online by mass spectrometry and gas chromatography. The successful operation of this setup was demonstrated with three different examples: the oxidation/reduction reaction of iridium (noble metal) and copper (transition metal) nanoparticles and with the hydrogenation of propyne on Pd black catalyst (powder).

Special Issue: Energy Conversion and Storage. Critical issues in current energy-based societies are its generation through methods utilizing alternatives to fossil fuels as well as its storage. Considering the scope, it is not surprising that the research becomes more and more multidisciplinary. Therefore, it is important to keep focused. The ChemEner symposia, the last one being highlighted in this Special Issue, achieve this by focusing on the state of the art and the newest development of the Chemistry of hydrogen generation, carbon dioxide reduction, and other related topics, exploring new concepts for clean future energy.

Spatially coupled catalytic ignition of CO oxidation on Pt: mesoscopic versus nano-scale

Spatial coupling during catalytic ignition of CO oxidation on μm-sized Pt(hkl) domains of a polycrystalline Pt foil has been studied in situ by PEEM (photoemission electron microscopy) in the 10(-5) mbar pressure range. The same reaction has been examined under similar conditions by FIM (field ion microscopy) on nm-sized Pt(hkl) facets of a Pt nanotip. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the digitized FIM images has been employed to analyze spatiotemporal dynamics of catalytic ignition. The results show the essential role of the sample size and of the morphology of the domain (facet) boundary in the spatial coupling in CO oxidation.

The Role of Defects in the Local Reaction Kinetics of CO Oxidation on Low-Index Pd Surfaces

The role of artificially created defects and steps in the local reaction kinetics of CO oxidation on the individual domains of a polycrystalline Pd foil was studied by photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM), mass spectroscopy (MS), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The defects and steps were created by STM-controlled Ar+ sputtering and the novel PEEM-based approach allowed the simultaneous determination of local kinetic phase transitions on differently oriented μm-sized grains of a polycrystalline sample. The independent (single-crystal-like) reaction behavior of the individual Pd(hkl) domains in the 10-5 mbar pressure range changes upon Ar+ sputtering to a correlated reaction behavior, and the reaction fronts propagate unhindered across the grain boundaries. The defect-rich surface shows also a significantly higher CO tolerance as reflected by the shift of both the global (MS-measured) and the local (PEEM-measured) kinetic diagrams toward higher CO pressure.

Silicon Oxide Surface Segregation in CO Oxidation on Pd: An in situ PEEM, MS and XPS Study

ABSTRACT

The effect of silicon oxide surface segregation on the locally-resolved kinetics of the CO oxidation reaction on individual grains of a polycrystalline Pd foil was studied in situ by PEEM, MS and XPS. The silicon oxide formation induced by Si-impurity segregation at oxidizing conditions, was monitored by XPS and its impact on the global and local (spatially resolved) kinetics of the CO oxidation was determined by MS and PEEM. The results reveal a drastic inhibiting effect of silicon oxide on the Pd reactivity towards CO oxidation, manifested both in the collapse of the global CO2 formation rate and in the modified local reactive properties of individual Pd micrograins. The presence of adsorbed oxygen on the Pd surface effectively enhances the silicon segregation to the Pd surface.

Al13Fe4 as a low-cost alternative for palladium in heterogeneous hydrogenation

Replacing noble metals in heterogeneous catalysts by low-cost substitutes has driven scientific and industrial research for more than 100 years. Cheap and ubiquitous iron is especially desirable, because it does not bear potential health risks like, for example, nickel. To purify the ethylene feed for the production of polyethylene, the semi-hydrogenation of acetylene is applied (80 × 10(6) tons per annum; refs 1-3). The presence of small and separated transition-metal atom ensembles (so-called site-isolation), and the suppression of hydride formation are beneficial for the catalytic performance. Iron catalysts necessitate at least 50 bar and 100 °C for the hydrogenation of unsaturated C-C bonds, showing only limited selectivity towards semi-hydrogenation. Recent innovation in catalytic semi-hydrogenation is based on computational screening of substitutional alloys to identify promising metal combinations using scaling functions and the experimental realization of the site-isolation concept employing structurally well-ordered and in situ stable intermetallic compounds of Ga with Pd (refs 15-19). The stability enables a knowledge-based development by assigning the observed catalytic properties to the crystal and electronic structures of the intermetallic compounds. Following this approach, we identified the low-cost and environmentally benign intermetallic compound Al(13)Fe(4) as an active and selective semi-hydrogenation catalyst. This knowledge-based development might prove applicable to a wide range of heterogeneously catalysed reactions.

Mapping the local reaction kinetics by PEEM: CO oxidation on individual (100)-type grains of Pt foil

The locally-resolved reaction kinetics of CO oxidation on individual (100)-type grains of a polycrystalline Pt foil was monitored in situ using photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). Reaction-induced surface morphology changes were studied by optical differential interference contrast microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Regions of high catalytic activity, low activity and bistability in a (p,T)-parameter space were determined, allowing to establish a local kinetic phase diagram for CO oxidation on (100) facets of Pt foil. PEEM observations of the reaction front propagation on Pt(100) domains reveal a high degree of propagation anisotropy both for oxygen and CO fronts on the apparently isotropic Pt(100) surface. The anisotropy vanishes for oxygen fronts at temperatures above 465 K, but is maintained for CO fronts at all temperatures studied, i.e. in the range of 417 to 513 K. A change in the front propagation mechanism is proposed to explain the observed effects.

Reactor for in situ measurements of spatially resolved kinetic data in heterogeneous catalysis

The present work describes a reactor that allows in situ measurements of spatially resolved kinetic data in heterogeneous catalysis. The reactor design allows measurements up to temperatures of 1300 degrees C and 45 bar pressure, i.e., conditions of industrial relevance. The reactor involves reactants flowing through a solid catalyst bed containing a sampling capillary with a side sampling orifice through which a small fraction of the reacting fluid (gas or liquid) is transferred into an analytical device (e.g., mass spectrometer, gas chromatograph, high pressure liquid chromatograph) for quantitative analysis. The sampling capillary can be moved with microm resolution in or against flow direction to measure species profiles through the catalyst bed. Rotation of the sampling capillary allows averaging over several scan lines. The position of the sampling orifice is such that the capillary channel through the catalyst bed remains always occupied by the capillary preventing flow disturbance and fluid bypassing. The second function of the sampling capillary is to provide a well which can accommodate temperature probes such as a thermocouple or a pyrometer fiber. If a thermocouple is inserted in the sampling capillary and aligned with the sampling orifice fluid temperature profiles can be measured. A pyrometer fiber can be used to measure the temperature profile of the solid catalyst bed. Spatial profile measurements are demonstrated for methane oxidation on Pt and methane oxidative coupling on Li/MgO, both catalysts supported on reticulated alpha-Al(2)O(3) foam supports.

General structural relationships between rutile-type VO2 and the Magnéli-phases VnO2 n –1

The structures of the Magnéli-phases V n O2 n –1 (3 ≤ n ≤ 7) are reviewed with respect to their structural relationships to rutile-type VO2. The general expressions for the transformation matrices P and Q = P –1 are derived allowing the prediction of lattice parameters and atomic coordinates for hypothetical structures of V n O2 n –1 with n ≥ 8.

Characterization of carbon nanofibers grown over Ni and Ni-cu catalysts

Carbon nanofibers were obtained by thermo-catalytic decomposition of methane at 700 degrees C over Ni and Ni-Cu catalysts prepared by different methods (co-precipitation, impregnation and fusion) and using either Al or Mg as textural promoter. Characterization of the carbon thus obtained was performed by N2 adsorption isotherms (BET surface area), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), temperature programmed oxidation (TPO), X-ray diffraction, Raman spectrometry, and electron microscopy SEM and TEM. The carbon obtained possesses high crystallinity and poor surface chemistry. The crystallinity is enhanced when using Mg as textural promoter and in the presence of copper. SEM and TEM examinations show that the fibers have fishbone structure and they grow generally from one nickel particle (tip growing) although there are some bidirectional growing. Copper-doping lead to the formation of thicker filaments and promotes the formation of bamboo-like structures. Catalyst particles higher than 100 nm do not promote the formation of nanofibers and the carbon deposits as uniform coatings.

A novel catalyst for synthesis of styrene: carbon nanofibers immobilized on activated carbon

Carbon NanoFibers (CNFs) with hierarchically structure have been immobilized onto Activated Carbon (AC) by impregnation with an aqueous solution of Fe(CH3COO)2, reduction and subsequent chemical vapor decomposition of ethylene. The morphology of the CNFs can be modulated by adjusting the pH of the Fe(CH3COO)2 solution used for impregnating the AC. A stable yield of 35% in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene was obtained at a temperature of 673 K, around 200 K lower than the current industrial process. The immobilized CNFs on AC catalysts combine the catalytic properties of the carbon nanofibers and the suprastructure of the AC host. The final material is an easy to handle active catalyst, with an open structure of immobilized CNFs avoiding the pressure drop problem, which is typically observed for fine powder forms of CNFs. The immobilized CNFs on AC are attractive for gas-phase fixed-bed industrial applications.

Monitoring in situ catalytically active states of Ru catalysts for different methanol oxidation pathways

One of the prerequisites for the detailed understanding of heterogeneous catalysis is the identification of the dynamic response of the catalyst surface under variable reaction conditions. The present study of methanol oxidation on different model Ru pre-catalysts, performed approaching the realistic catalytic reaction conditions, provides direct evidence of the significant effect of reactants' chemical potentials and temperature on the catalyst surface composition and the corresponding catalytic activity and selectivity. The experiments were carried out for three regimes of oxygen potentials in the 10(-1) mbar pressure range, combining in situ analysis of the catalyst surface by synchrotron-based photoelectron core level spectroscopy with simultaneous monitoring of the products released in the gas phase by mass spectroscopy. Metallic Ru with adsorbed oxygen and transient 'surface oxide', RuO(x), with varying x have been identified as the catalytically active states under specific reaction conditions, favouring partial or full oxidation pathways. It has been shown that the composition of catalytically active steady states, exhibiting different activity and selectivity, evolves under the reaction conditions, independent of the crystallographic orientation and the initial pre-catalyst chemical state, metallic Ru or RuO(2).

High-pressure STM of the interaction of oxygen with Ag(111)

To identify surface phases that could play a role for the epoxidation of ethylene on Ag catalysts we have studied the interaction of Ag(111) with O(2) at elevated pressures. Experiments were performed using high-pressure scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at temperatures between 450 and 480 K and O(2) pressures in the mbar range. Below p(O(2)) approximately 1 mbar the surface largely showed the structure of bare Ag(111). At p(O(2)) above approximately 1 mbar the (4 x 4)O structure and the closely related (4 x 5 radical 3)rect structure were observed. The findings confirm theoretical predictions that the (4 x 4)O structure is thermodynamically stable at the oxygen partial pressure of the industrial ethylene oxide synthesis. However, in other experiments only a rough, disordered structure was observed. The difference is caused by the chemical state of the STM cell that depends on the pretreatment and on previous experiments. The surface was further analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Although these measurements were performed after sample transfer to ultra-high vacuum (UHV), so that the surface composition was modified, the two surface states could still be identified by the presence of carbonate or a carbonaceous species, and by the absence or presence of a high-binding energy oxygen species, respectively. It turns out that the (4 x 4)O structure only forms under extremely clean conditions, indicating that the (4 x 4)O phase and similar oxygen-induced reconstructions of the Ag(111) surface are chemically unstable. Chemical reactions at the inner surfaces of the STM cell also complicate the detection of the catalytic formation of ethylene oxide.
