Optic nerve meningioma and cloacal adenocarcinoma in a Humboldt penguin

A 26-y-old, male, captive Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) was euthanized following a 3.5-mo history of weakened elimination mechanics, recurrent tenesmus, intermittent hemorrhagic droppings, and a cloacal mass. Blepharospasm, of unknown cause, of the right eye was present for ~3 mo before euthanasia. Autopsy revealed a cloacal adenocarcinoma with localized coelomic carcinomatosis and distant metastases to the liver and lungs. On histopathology, a 2.6 × 1.2 × 0.5-mm, well-demarcated mass was found surrounding the right optic nerve, expanding the subdural space and wrapping the leptomeninges. The mass was composed of neoplastic spindle-to-polygonal cells consistent with a meningioma, meningothelial subtype. No evidence of neoplasia was found in the optic chiasm or brain, indicating a primary retrobulbar meningioma. Immunohistochemistry for cytokeratin AE1/AE3, vimentin, and S100 revealed robust and consistent immunoreactivity to vimentin, and weak and variable immunoreactivity to cytokeratin and S100, supporting the diagnosis. Meningiomas have been described only rarely in avian species, and we found no reports of optic nerve meningiomas in any avian species to date. The optic nerve meningioma in this case was considered a clinically incidental finding.

External Collaboration Results in Student Learning Gains and Positive STEM Attitudes in CUREs

The implementation of course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) has made it possible to expose large undergraduate populations to research experiences. For these research experiences to be authentic, they should reflect the increasingly collaborative nature of research. While some CUREs have expanded, involving multiple schools across the nation, it is still unclear how a structured extramural collaboration between students and faculty from an outside institution affects student outcomes. In this study, we established three cohorts of students: 1) no-CURE, 2) single-institution CURE (CURE), and 3) external collaborative CURE (ec-CURE), and assessed academic and attitudinal outcomes. The ec-CURE differs from a regular CURE in that students work with faculty member from an external institution to refine their hypotheses and discuss their data. The sharing of ideas, data, and materials with an external faculty member allowed students to experience a level of collaboration not typically found in an undergraduate setting. Students in the ec-CURE had the greatest gains in experimental design; self-reported course benefits; scientific skills; and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) importance. Importantly this study occurred in a diverse community of STEM disciplinary faculty from 2- and 4-year institutions, illustrating that exposing students to structured external collaboration is both feasible and beneficial to student learning.

An evaluation of a required computer-applications course for psychology majors

This study describes and evaluates a psychology course specifically focused on computer skills for undergraduate psychology majors. Learning by 136 undergraduates was evaluated on a 57-item objective test. Mean posttest scores were significantly higher than the mean pretest scores in all classes across all topic areas.

Imagination inflation: a statistical artifact of regression toward the mean

In the imagination inflation procedure of Garry, Manning, Loftus, and Sherman (1996), subjects rated a list of events in terms of how likely each was to have occurred in their childhood. Two weeks later, some of the events were imagined; control events were not. The subjects then rated the likelihood of occurrence for each event a second time. Garry et al. (1996) reported that the act of imagining the target events led to increased ratings of likelihood. This finding has been interpreted as indicating that false events can be suggestively planted in memory by simply having people imagine them. The present study tests and confirms the hypothesis that the results that have been attributed to imagination inflation are simply a statistical artifact of regression toward the mean. The experiment of Garry et al. (1996) was reproduced (with some procedural changes), using younger and older adults. The results of Garry et al. (1996) were replicated; likelihood ratings for events initially rated low in likelihood did increase from Time 1 to Time 2. However, ratings for events initially rated high in likelihood decreased under the same conditions, and these results were consistent with the imagined target events, the target events not imagined, and the nontarget events.
