Abstract
The poly(hydroxy-amide) [PHA] family of polymers possess not only high temperature stability, but also form a more thermally stable polymer (polybenzoxazole) [PBO] during thermal decomposition. The synthesis occurs in solution at low temperature, preventing premature ring cyclization to PBO. The molecular structure was confirmed from 1H-, 13C-NMR, and elemental analysis. One drawback for the highly aromatic PHA is the lack of a softening temperature before the onset of ring closure to PBO. Thus, poly(methoxy-amide) [PMeOA] and random copolymers of PHA and PMeOA have been synthesized and characterized. From microcalorimetry, the peak heat release capacity values for the copolymers is typically higher than that of the pure PHA (while still much lower than most other polymers); however, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis has shown glass transition temperatures to as low as 151°C for the copolymers. Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) displays a three-step degradation associated with two ring closures to PBO from PHA and PMeOA (with the release of small low-fuel molecules) and the thermal degradation of PBO. The magnitude of the weight loss associated with each step is dependant on the percent of PHA, PMeOA, and aliphatic content in the copolymer. TGA and DSC analysis of PMeOA films under isothermal conditions show degradation and demethylation (cyclization) occurring simultaneously above 300°C and FT-IR displays benzoxazole ring forming under the same condition. Fibers have been spun from the molten state of PMeOA using a Micro-compounder. Fibers spun at 320°C, with average diameter of 180 μm, show an ultimate tensile strength, elongation at break, and Young's modulus of 60 MPa, 2.2% and 3.6 GPa, respectively. Films were also made by spin-coating or solvent casting to observe the effect of cyclization on tensile properties. These films had an ultimate tensile strength and Young's modulus of 120 MPa and 3 GPa, respectively.

Abstract
AbstractPolyimide thin films and coatings (< 20μm) for electronic applications have been fully characterized. Analysis of residual stresses and determination of all 21 anisotropic constants are necessary for a better understanding of these coatings in complex geometries. The residual stresses have been measured by a real-time vibrational holographic interferometry technique. The number of elastic constants is reduced to 9 independent constants by finding the orthotopic axes. All the 9 orthotropic constants - 3 normal compliances, 3 shear compliances and 3 independent Poisson’s ratios - have been determined. Moisture diffusion constants have also been measured.

Abstract
AbstractHigh-modulus PPTA and PBZT fibers have been surface-modified by a series of reactions to allow single filaments to be wetted by sodium silicate solutions as well as to exhibit good adhesion to the resulting glass coating. Fiber surfaces have been characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. PBZT and PPTA fibers showed little or no decrease of their tensile properties as a consequence of the surface-modification. Glass coatings have been applied to single filaments by dip-coating in an aqueous sodium silicate solution followed by air- and vacuumdrying. Coated PPTA and PBZT fibers with shear moduli as high as 5 GPa have been prepared. The compressive strain at failure of PPTA filaments coated with a 0.5 μm thick air-dried coating was raised to 0.6%, compared to 0.4% for uncoated filaments.

Abstract
The Ribosomal Database Project (RDP) provides researchers with quality-controlled bacterial and archaeal small subunit rRNA alignments and analysis tools. An improved alignment strategy uses the Infernal secondary structure aware aligner to provide a more consistent higher quality alignment and faster processing of user sequences. Substantial new analysis features include a new Pyrosequencing Pipeline that provides tools to support analysis of ultra high-throughput rRNA sequencing data. This pipeline offers a collection of tools that automate the data processing and simplify the computationally intensive analysis of large sequencing libraries. In addition, a new Taxomatic visualization tool allows rapid visualization of taxonomic inconsistencies and suggests corrections, and a new class Assignment Generator provides instructors with a lesson plan and individualized teaching materials. Details about RDP data and analytical functions can be found at http://rdp.cme.msu.edu/.

Through its website (http://rdp.cme.msu.edu), RDP-II offers aligned and annotated rRNA sequence data, analysis services, and phylogenetic inferences (trees) derived from these data. RDP-II release 8.1 contains 16 277 prokaryotic, 5201 eukaryotic, and 1503 mitochondrial small subunit rRNA sequences in aligned and annotated format. The current public beta release of 9.0 debuts a new regularly updated alignment of over 50 000 annotated (eu)bacterial sequences. New analysis services include a sequence search and selection tool (Hierarchy Browser) and a phylogenetic tree building and visualization tool (Phylip Interface). A new interactive tutorial guides users through the basics of rRNA sequence analysis. Other services include probe checking, phylogenetic placement of user sequences, screening of users' sequences for chimeric rRNA sequences, automated alignment, production of similarity matrices, and services to plan and analyze terminal restriction fragment polymorphism (T-RFLP) experiments. Abstract
Abstract
High-pressure high-temperature sintering (HPHTS) is a novel recycling technique that makes it possible to recycle vulcanized rubber powders made from waste rubber (namely scrap tires) through only the application of heat and pressure. A brief look into the mechanism of sintering will be presented along with information about the influence of molding variables, such as time, temperature, pressure and rubber particle size on the mechanical properties of the produced parts. One of the most interesting observations is that powders of every crosslinked elastomer attempted sintered together via this technique, including silicone rubber (SI), sulfur cured [natural rubber (NR), ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)], peroxide cured butadiene rubber (BR), and fluoroelastomers (FKM). Early work on sintered rubber made from commercially available rubber powder had a modulus of 1 to 2 MPa, strength of 4 to 7 MPa and an elongation at break of 150–250%. Recently, in-house ground samples of SBR have had sintered values over 9.5 MPa strength and 275% elongation, or greater than 60% retention of the original properties. Many of these mechanical properties are comparable with industrially manufactured rubbers, and it is believed that recycled rubbers produced via HPHTS offer the potential to replace virgin rubber in numerous applications.

Abstract
The Ribosomal Database Project (RDP-II), previously described by Maidak et al. [Nucleic Acids Res. (2000), 28, 173-174], continued during the past year to add new rRNA sequences to the aligned data and to improve the analysis commands. Release 8.0 (June 1, 2000) consisted of 16 277 aligned prokaryotic small subunit (SSU) rRNA sequences while the number of eukaryotic and mitochondrial SSU rRNA sequences in aligned form remained at 2055 and 1503, respectively. The number of prokaryotic SSU rRNA sequences more than doubled from the previous release 14 months earlier, and approximately 75% are longer than 899 bp. An RDP-II mirror site in Japan is now available (http://wdcm.nig.ac.jp/RDP/html/index.h tml). RDP-II provides aligned and annotated rRNA sequences, derived phylogenetic trees and taxonomic hierarchies, and analysis services through its WWW server (http://rdp.cme.msu.edu/). Analysis services include rRNA probe checking, approximate phylogenetic placement of user sequences, screening user sequences for possible chimeric rRNA sequences, automated alignment, production of similarity matrices and services to plan and analyze terminal restriction fragment polymorphism experiments. The RDP-II email address for questions and comments has been changed from curator@cme.msu.edu to rdpstaff@msu.edu.
