Biosynthesis of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles: a review

Nanoparticles promise to revolutionize the way we think of ordinary materials thanks to the new features such small structures exhibit which include strength, durability, optical and magnetics properties. Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are a prominent class of NMs because of their potential application in magnetic separation, hyperthermia, targeted drug delivery, and catalysis. Most synthetic nanoparticulate platforms rely on the use of tough chemical procedures associated with unfriendly, harmful and costly reactants. For this reason, bio-inspired approaches have become the most successful alternatives to fabricate nanomaterials in an "eco-friendly" manner, and many bio-protocols that make use of substrates from plants and microorganisms have been successfully applied in the synthesis of magnetic IONPs. In this review, the main biosynthesis protocols applied in the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles are discussed. A discussion on the challenges for a second stage perspective which would be a large scale production is also given.

Toxicological aspect of water treated by chlorine-based advanced oxidation processes: A review

As well established in the literature, residual toxicity is an important parameter for evaluating the sanitary and environmental safety of water treatment processes, and this parameter becomes even more crucial when chlorine-based processes are applied for water treatment. Eliminating initial toxicity or preventing its increase after water treatment remains a huge challenge mainly due to the formation of highly toxic disinfection by-products (DBPs) that stem from the degradation of organic contaminants or the interaction of the chlorine-based oxidants with different matrix components. In this review, we present a comprehensive discussion regarding the toxicological aspects of water treated using chlorine-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and the recent findings related to the factors influencing toxicity, and provide directions for future research in the area. The review begins by shedding light on the advances made in the application of free chlorine AOPs and the findings from studies conducted using electrochemical technologies based on free chlorine generation. We then delve into the insights and contributions brought to the fore regarding the application of NH₂Cl- and ClO₂-based treatment processes. Finally, we broaden our discussion by evaluating the toxicological assays and predictive models employed in the study of residual toxicity and provide an overview of the findings reported to date on this subject matter, while giving useful insights and directions for future research on the topic.

Using a sensitive screen-printed electrode based on printex L6 and polyaniline activated carbon for piroxicam detection

This study reports the development and implementation of a straightforward, rapid, and cost-effective voltammetric technique for piroxicam (PIR) detection at nanomolar concentrations in biological and environmental samples. The method involved the use of a screen-printed electrode (SPE) enhanced with a combination of Printex L6 carbon (PL6C) and polyaniline-based activated carbon (PAC) on a chitosan film crosslinked with epichlorohydrin (CTS:EPH). The detection was carried out using square-wave adsorptive anodic stripping voltammetry (SWAdASV) in a 0.10 mol L-1 phosphate buffer solution at pH 6.0. The approach employed yielded a low limit of detection of 4.5 × 10-9 mol L-1 and a linear range of 5.0 × 10-8 to 8.8 × 10-6 mol L-1 (r = 0.999). The PAC-PL6C-CTS:EPH/SPE sensor was effectively employed for PIR detection in synthetic urine and river water samples, where its reliability was proven through addition and recovery tests. The results obtained from the application of the proposed voltammetric method closely matched those recorded under high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which was used as a reference method. The findings show that the technique proposed in this study offers a simple, quick, and highly effective alternative mechanism for PIR detection in both biological and environmental matrices.

Effective Nitrate Electroconversion to Ammonia Using an Entangled Co3O4/Graphene Nanoribbon Catalyst

There has been huge interest among chemical scientists in the electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO3-) to ammonia (NH4+) due to the useful application of NH4+ in nitrogen fertilizers and fuel. To conduct such a complex reduction reaction, which involves eight electrons and eight protons, one needs to develop high-performance (and stable) electrocatalysts that favor the formation of reaction intermediates that are selective toward ammonia production. In the present study, we developed and applied Co3O4/graphene nanoribbon (GNR) electrocatalysts with excellent properties for the effective reduction of NO3- to NH4+, where NH4+ yield rate of 42.11 mg h-1 mgcat-1, FE of 98.7%, NO3- conversion efficiency of 14.71%, and NH4+ selectivity of 100% were obtained, with the application of only 37.5 μg cm-2 of the catalysts (for the best catalyst ─Co3O4(Cowt %55)GNR, only 20.6 μg cm-2 of Co was applied), confirmed by loadings ranging from 19-150 μg cm-2. The highly satisfactory results obtained from the application of the proposed catalysts were favored by high average values of electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) and low Rct values, along with the presence of several planes in Co3O4 entangled with GNR and the occurrence of a kind of "(Co3(Co(CN)6)2(H2O)12)1.333 complex" structure on the catalyst surface, in addition to the effective migration of NO3- from the cell cathodic branch to the anodic branch, which was confirmed by the experiment conducted using a H-cell separated by a Nafion 117 membrane. The in situ FTIR and Raman spectroscopy results helped identify the adsorbed intermediates, namely, NO3-, NO2-, NO, and NH2OH, and the final product NH4+, which are compatible with the proposed NO3- electroreduction mechanism. The Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations helped confirm that the Co3O4(Cowt %55)GNR catalyst exhibited a better performance in terms of nitrate electroreduction in comparison with Co3O4(Cowt %75), considering the intermediates identified by the in situ FTIR and Raman spectroscopy results and the rate-determining step (RDS) observed for the transition of *NO to *NHO (0.43 eV).
