Abstract
PURPOSE Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used as analgesic in postoperative pain to reduce opioid side effects, such as drowsiness and nausea. However, NSAIDs have not been used extensively in cardiac surgical patients due to the fear of untoward effects on gastric, renal, and coagulation parameters. This study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of three NSAIDs for pain control in CABG patients. METHODS One hundred and twenty patients scheduled for elective CABG surgery were enrolled in randomized, double blind, controlled study. Standardized fast track cardiac anesthesia was used. One dose of drug (75 mg diclofenac, 100 mg ketoprofen, 100 mg indomethacin, or placebo) was given pr one hour before tracheal extubation and a second dose 12 hr later. Pain was treated with morphine iv and acetaminophen po. Visual analogue pain scores were recorded at baseline, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hr after the first dose of drug. RESULTS There were no differences among the groups in pain scores. Only patients who received diclofenac required less morphine than patients in the control group (P < 0.05). When the total amounts of pain medications were computed to morphine equivalents, only patients in the diclofenac group received less pain medications than the placebo group (P < 0.05). Proportion of patients with postoperative increase of creatinine level (20% and over) did not differ between placebo and drug groups. CONCLUSION Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be used for analgesia management post CABG surgery in selected patients. Diclofenac appears to have the best analgesic effects by reducing the morphine and other analgesic requirement postoperatively.

Abstract
Primary cilia, with highly regulated cellular sensory functions, play key roles in tissue development and function maintenance. Intraflagellar transport 140 (IFT140) is a subunit of IFT complex A, which is specialized for retrograde transportation in cilia. Mutations of Ift140 are usually associated with syndromic ciliopathy and may cause isolated diseases such as retinal dystrophy, short ribs, and polycystic kidney. However, the role of IFT140 in tooth development has not been well investigated. In this study, a close relationship between IFT140 and dentin formation is disclosed. During tooth development, IFT140 was highly expressed in odontoblasts. To further understand the role of IFT140 in dentinogenesis, Ift140flox/flox/Osx-Cre mouse was generated. The dentin thickness of Ift140flox/flox/Osx-Cre mouse is thinner and the dentin formation is slower than that in control. In vitro, deletion of IFT140 in odontoblasts led to poor odontogenic differentiation, abnormal primary cilia, and decreased Sonic hedgehog signaling molecules. More important, due to loss of primary cilia in odontoblasts by IFT140 deletion, reparative dentin formation was impaired in a tooth-drilling model. These results suggest that cilia gene IFT140 is essential in promoting dentin formation and reparation.

Abstract
AIMS To synthesize silver-loaded mesoporous silica SBA-15 (Ag/SBA-15) materials and examine their antimicrobial action and antimicrobial mechanism. METHODS AND RESULTS Ag/SBA-15 materials were prepared by means of incipient wetness impregnation, impregnation and direct hydrothermal synthesis methods. The antimicrobial activity of Ag/SBA-15 was investigated using Escherichia coli as an indicator bacterium, and the antimicrobial mechanism was explored. The properties and Ag(+) release behaviour of Ag/SBA-15 materials were compared. Experimental results showed that Ag/SBA-15 materials resulted in 7·5 log inactivation of E. coli for only 60 min, which exhibited very high antimicrobial activities at room temperature without using any light or electrical power input. The cell wall and cell membrane were destroyed in the antimicrobial process, leading to leakage of intracellular components. The formation of extracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) involved in the bactericidal process was confirmed. Production of intracellular ROS was also discovered. CONCLUSIONS Ag/SBA-15 exhibited high antimicrobial activity against E. coli. This antimicrobial effect was a synergistic action between extracellular ROS and the toxicity of Ag(+) , which induced intracellular ROS production and subsequent cell death. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study revealed for the first time the antimicrobial activities and mechanisms of Ag/SBA-15 materials prepared with different methods.

Abstract
The activities of hybrid dimers of alkaline phosphatase containing two chemically modified subunits have been investigated. One hybrid species was prepared by dissociation and reconstitution of a mixture of two variants produced by chemical modification of the native enzyme with succinic anhydride and tetranitromethane, respectively. The succinyl-nitrotyrosyl hybrid was separated from the other members of the hybrid set by DEAE-Sephadex chromatography and then converted to a succinyl-aminotyrosyl hybrid by reduction of the modified tyrosine residues with sodium dithionite. A comparison of the activities of these two hybrids with the activities of the succinyl, nitrotyrosyl and aminotyrosyl derivatives has shown that either the subunits of alkaline phosphatase function independently or if the subunits turnover alternately in a reciprocating mechanism, then the intrinsic activity of each subunit must be strongly dependent on its partner subunit.

Abstract
Quercetin is a flavonoid with significant biological and pharmacological activity. In this paper, quercetin was modified at the 3-OH position. Rutin was used as a raw material. We used methyl protection, Williamson etherification reactions, and then substitution reactions to prepare 15 novel quercetin derivatives containing a quinoline moiety. All these complexes were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR and HRMS. Of these, compound 3e (IC50 = 6.722 μmol·L-1) had a better inhibitory effect on human liver cancer (HepG-2) than DDP (Cisplatin) (IC50 = 26.981 μmol·L-1). The mechanism of the action experiment showed that compound 3e could induce cell apoptosis.

Abstract
BackgroundThe quality of starch greatly affects the quality of processed products. There are many indexes for quality evaluation of starch. Currently, amylose content is considered the chief index in the quality evaluation of sweet potato starch, which is entirely based on tradition (experience) method. The existing evaluation standards lack quality evaluation standards for sweet potato starch.PurposeTo screen reasonable evaluation indexes of sweet potato starch, and establish a scientific and systematic evaluation system of sweet potato starch.MethodsTwenty-two components and quality indexes of sweet potato starch were measured. The evaluation indexes of sweet potato starch were screened based on a statistical description, correlation analysis, and principal component analysis (PCA), and a quality evaluation model of sweet potato starch for brewing was established based on analytic hierarchy process. The calculated values of the model were verified by linear fitting with standardized sensory evaluation values.ResultsThe coefficient of variation of total starch content (%), amylose content (%), amylopectin content (%), L* value, ΔE, water absorption capacity (g/g), and pasting temperature was less than 6%, while the coefficient of variation of other indexes was larger. In addition, there were different degrees of correlation among the indexes. PCA was used to identify interrelated variables, and the first six principal components together account for 82.26% of the total variability. Then, seven core indexes — setback (cp), rate of regression (%), ratio of amylose to amylopectin (%), gel strength (kgf/cm2), a* value, ash content (%), and solubility (%) — were selected from the six principal components according to the load value of the rotation matrix. These seven core indexes replaced the original 22 indexes to simplify the evaluation of sweet potato starch. The quality evaluation model of sweet potato starch was Y = 0.034X2 + 0.321X6 + 0.141X8 + 0.08X17 + 0.023X19 + 0.08X21 + 0.321X22.ConclusionThe comprehensive evaluation system of sweet potato starch can accurately predict the quality of sweet potato starch. The development of such a system is of great significance to the post-harvest processing of high-starch sweet potato and the breeding of high-quality and high-starch sweet potato varieties.

Abstract
Introduction: Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) followed by radiation therapy has proven to be as effective as modified radical mastectomy, and has, therefore, been considered as the standard treatment for patients with localized breast cancer in Western societies. However, performance of BCS for the treatment of breast cancer in China is not as common as in Western countries. This study was to evaluate healthy women's attitudes towards BCS in an urban region of China.Method: Between February and March 2009, three hundred and fifty healthy women from three urban suburbs of Taiyuan city in Northern China were invited to complete a self-administered questionnaire. Participants' characteristics, including age, education, occupation, and attitudes towards breast cancer treatment options and involvement of treatment decisions, were collected and analyzed.Results: Three hundred and fifteen women returned the questionnaire. The response rate was 90%. The median age of the participants was 31.2 years old (range: 16 – 69 years old). Among them, 49.2% were married, 27.9% had received high levels of education, and 87.3%, 95.2% and 71.4% would like to know the disease status, to involve making treatment decisions, and to accept BCS, respectively, if they were diagnosed with breast cancer. Women aged above 45 years were more likely to choose BCS compared with those less than 45 years old (73.4% vs 61.5%, P = 0.08). There was no association between choices of surgical approaches and levels of education or occupation. As for breast cancer treatment information sources, 76.8% of the participants mentioned oncologists, followed by the internet (12.1%), friends, and media (10.8%). Almost all responders (93.3%) would like to attend hospitals specialized in cancer treatment if breast lumps were detected.Conclusion: Although only 7.1% of breast cancer patients attending a specialized tumor hospital in Taiyuan city underwent BCS, the current study indicate that most women in Northern China would prefer BCS to mastectomy if they were diagnosed with breast cancer. Therefore, further occupational training is warranted for oncologists in China so that optimal treatments for patients with breast cancer can be carried out.

Abstract
The discovery of novel two-dimensional (2D) half-metallic materials with a robust ferromagnetic (FM) order and a high Curie temperature (Tc) is attractive for the advancement of next-generation spintronic devices. Here, we propose a monolayer with stable 2D intrinsic FM half-metallicity, i.e., the CrSc2Te4 monolayer, which was constructed by intercalating a monolayer of 1T-CrTe2-type sandwiched between two layers of 2H-ScTe2 monolayers. Our calculations reveal that it exhibits exceptional dynamical, thermal, and mechanical stabilities accompanied by a robust half-metallicity characterized by a wide bandgap of 1.02 eV and FM ordering with a high Tc of 326 K. Notably, these properties remain intact in almost the entire range of the biaxial strain from -5% to 5%. Furthermore, our investigations demonstrate excellent spin transport capabilities, including an outstanding spin-filtering effect, and a remarkably high tunneling magnetoresistance ratio peaking at 6087.07%. The remarkable magnetic features of the 2D CrSc2Te4 monolayer with room temperature FM, intrinsic half-metallicity, and 100% spin-polarization make it a promising candidate for the next-generation high-performance spintronic nanodevices as well as high-density magnetic recording and sensors.

Abstract
Polyphenols and polysaccharides are very important natural products with special physicochemical properties and extensive biological activities. Recently, polyphenol-polysaccharide conjugates have been synthesized to overcome the limitations of polysaccharides and broaden their application range. Grafted copolymers are produced through chemical coupling, enzyme-mediated, and free radical-mediated methods, among which the free radical-induced grafting reaction is the most cost-effective, ecofriendly, safe, and plausible approach. Here, we review the grafting reactions of polysaccharides mediated by free radicals with various bioactive polyphenols, such as gallic acid (GA), ferulic acid (FA), and catechins. A detailed introduction of the methods and their mechanisms for free radical-mediated grafting is given. Structural characterization methods of the graft products, including thin-layer chromatography (TLC), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are introduced. Furthermore, the biological properties of polyphenol-polysaccharide conjugates are also presented, including antioxidant, antibacterial, antidiabetic, and neuroprotection activities, etc. Moreover, the potential applications of polyphenol-polysaccharide conjugates are described. Finally, the challenges and research prospects of graft products are summarized.

Abstract
Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by antiplatelet autoantibodies, thrombocytopenia, and bleeding, however, its treatment options are limited. In this study, a kind of active component, chlorogenic acid compounds (CGAs) from sweetpotato leaves was extracted out to explore its medicinal value and provide novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of ITP. CGAs was isolated by ionic liquids-ultrasound (IL-UAE), which contains six isomers of chlorogenic acid with total purity of 95.69%. The thrombopoietic effect and mechanism of CGAs were investigated using in silico prediction and experimental validation. The changes of HEL cells morphology in volume and the increase in the total cell percentage of polyploid cells indicated that CGAs could promote megakaryocyte differentiation. Meanwhile, CGAs could promote platelet formation in a murine model of ITP, which was established by injection of antiplatelet antibody. Further quantitative proteomics analysis and Western blot verification revealed that CGAs could activate PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, which confirmed the mechanism prediction. It suggested that CGAs may provide a novel therapeutic strategy that relies on the PI3K/AKT pathway to facilitate megakaryocyte differentiation and platelet production.

Abstract
Introduction: The incidence rate of female breast cancer has increased rapidly over the past 20 years in China. It has become the leading cause of newly diagnosed cancer and a major cause of mortality among women in some large Chinese cities with higher socio-economic status. This was partly explained by the change of lifestyle and reproductive risk factors. However, little data exists on the extent to which the menstrual and reproductive factors with breast cancer risk have changed in other less developed Chinese cities.Method: One cross sectional study was conducted in urban region of Taiyuan of China from September 2008 to March 2009. One thousand and five hundreds healthy women were invited to complete a self-administered questionnaire. Participants' characteristics, including age, education, occupation, weight, height, age at menarche, age at first birth, parity, duration of breastfeeding, and age at menopause were collected and analyzed. Study subjects were divided into six groups: younger than or equal to 20, 21 to 30, 31 to 40, 41 to 50, 51 to 60 and older than 60 years old.Results: One thousand four hundreds and twenty eight women returned the questionnaire. The response rate was 95.2%. Median age of women in this study was 39 years old (range: 16 – 86 years old). There was a 4.8cm difference in the mean height between women born in 1990s and 1940s. The average age at menarche dropped from 16 years for women aged above 60 to 14.3 years for those younger than 20 years old. The average birth rate markedly decreased from 4.4 births per woman in the 1960s to 1.1 births per woman in the 1990s. The mean age at first birth increased 5.6 years through the period from the 1940s to 1980s. The breastfeeding time significantly reduced from 20.3 months to 3.6 months over 40 years.Conclusion: This study indicates that there has been significant change in the menstrual and reproductive factors associated with breast cancer risk in the last 40 years. These changes will certainly influence the incidence rate of breast cancer in the local city. Therefore, measures are needed to enhance the awareness of breast cancer and its early-detection methods among the urban region women in China.

Abstract
To examine the effects of different solvents on the molecular weight, yield, chemical composition, and bioactivity of pectins, four RG-I type pectins were separately extracted from sweet potato residue (SPR) using hot water extraction (HWSP), sodium hydroxide extraction (SHSP), hydrochloric acid extraction (HASP), and chelating agents (CASP). The results showed that the four pectin samples comprised GalUA, Gal, Rha, Ara, Glc, GlcUA, Man, and Xyl components. Among these components, GalA content was the highest in all four pectins. SHSP exhibited relatively higher yield (3.16 %, w/w). Additionally, SHSP exhibited a lower molecular weight (44.49 kDa) and the largest proportion of the RG-I region (75.42 %) compared with other extraction methods. On the contrary, HASP showed relatively lower yield (2.14 %, w/w), and its corresponding prepared pectin had relatively high molecular weight (69.81 kDa) and the minimum range of RG-I region (46.87 %) compared with HWSP, SHSP, and CASP. The anti-inflammation effect of the four SPR pectin samples was investigated using in vitro experiments. Results showed that all of SPR pectin significantly inhibited the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated iBMDM macrophage cells. The preliminary structure-activity relationship between pectin structure and anti-inflammatory activity was also analyzed. SPR pectin can be developed as a potential bioactive ingredient for applications in the food and medicine industries.

Abstract
Anthocyanin-rich steamed purple sweet potato (SPSP) is a suitable raw material to produce smart packaging films. However, the application of SPSP-based films is restricted by the low antimicrobial activity of anthocyanins. In this study, SPSP-based smart packaging films were produced by adding mandarin essential oil (MEO) as an antimicrobial agent. The impact of MEO content (3%, 6%, and 9%) on the structures, properties, and application of SPSP-based films was measured. The results showed that MEO created several pores within films and reduced the hydrogen bonding system and crystallinity of films. The dark purple color of the SPSP films was almost unchanged by MEO. MEO significantly decreased the light transmittance, water vapor permeability, and tensile strength of the films, but remarkably increased the oxygen permeability, thermal stability, and antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the films. The SPSP-MEO films showed intuitive color changes at different acid-base conditions. The purple-colored SPSP-MEO films turned blue when chilled shrimp and pork were not fresh. The MEO content greatly influenced the structures, physical properties, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the films. However, the MEO content had no impact on the color change ability of the films. The results suggested that SPSP-MEO films have potential in the smart packaging of protein-rich foods.
