In the Pursuit of Effective Affective Computing: The Relationship Between Features and Registration

For facial expression recognition systems to be applicable in the real world, they need to be able to detect and track a previously unseen person's face and its facial movements accurately in realistic environments. A highly plausible solution involves performing a "dense" form of alignment, where 60-70 fiducial facial points are tracked with high accuracy. The problem is that, in practice, this type of dense alignment had so far been impossible to achieve in a generic sense, mainly due to poor reliability and robustness. Instead, many expression detection methods have opted for a "coarse" form of face alignment, followed by an application of a biologically inspired appearance descriptor such as the histogram of oriented gradients or Gabor magnitudes. Encouragingly, recent advances to a number of dense alignment algorithms have demonstrated both high reliability and accuracy for unseen subjects [e.g., constrained local models (CLMs)]. This begs the question: Aside from countering against illumination variation, what do these appearance descriptors do that standard pixel representations do not? In this paper, we show that, when close to perfect alignment is obtained, there is no real benefit in employing these different appearance-based representations (under consistent illumination conditions). In fact, when misalignment does occur, we show that these appearance descriptors do work well by encoding robustness to alignment error. For this work, we compared two popular methods for dense alignment-subject-dependent active appearance models versus subject-independent CLMs-on the task of action-unit detection. These comparisons were conducted through a battery of experiments across various publicly available data sets (i.e., CK+, Pain, M3, and GEMEP-FERA). We also report our performance in the recent 2011 Facial Expression Recognition and Analysis Challenge for the subject-independent task.

The influence of economic incentives on treatment patterns in a third-party funded dental service

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the response of dental practitioners to administration and remuneration adjustments to the Dental Treatment Services Scheme (DTSS) in the Republic of Ireland.

DESIGN

Following the introduction of a series of administration and fee adjustments by a third party payments system in December 1999 the pattern of extractions and restorations are examined to determine whether the adjustments had influenced provider behaviour, in particular whether a substitution effect from extractions to restorations would result from a relative fee increase of 62% for amalgam fillings.

DATA AND METHODS

Data on patient and provider characteristics from June 1996 to April 2005, collected by the Health Service Executive (HSE) National Shared Services Primary Care Reimbursement Service to facilitate remuneration to dentists providing services in the DTSS, was used in this analysis. A graphical analysis of the data revealed a structural break in the time-series and an apparent substitution to amalgam fillings following the introduction of the fee increases. To test the statistical significance of this break, the ratio of amalgams to restorations was regressed on the trend, growth and level dummy variables, using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression. The diagnostics of the model were assessed using the Jarque-Bera normality test and the LM to test for serial correlation.

RESULTS

The initial results showed no evidence of a structural break. However on further investigation, when a pulse dummy was included to account for the immediate impact of the fee adjustment the results suggest a unit root process with a structural break in December 1999. This implies that the amalgam fee increase of December 1999 influenced the behaviour patterns of providers.

CONCLUSIONS

System changes can be used to change the emphasis from a scheme that was principally exodontia/emergency based to a scheme that is more conservative and based on restoration/prevention.

Case report: Cone-beam ct imaging in the management of a double tooth

BACKGROUND

The diagnosis and management strategies of double teeth have largely relied on clinical examination and conventional radiographic findings. Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (Cone-beam CT) was developed in the late 1990's and, therefore, is a relatively recent addition to the imaging armamentarium for use in Maxillofacial Radiology. There have been no publications in the dental literature demonstrating the use of Cone-beam CT or 3D stereolithography in the diagnosis and surgical planning of the management of double teeth.

CASE REPORT

An 11 year old girl presented with a double left lateral maxillary incisor. Conventional plain film radiography failed to provide the requisite information for pre-operative planning. Cone-beam Computed Tomography (Cone-beam CT) allowed determination of location of fusion, three-dimensional (3D) visualisation of pulpal anatomy and the construction of a 3D stereolithographic model for surgical planning. The double tooth was surgically divided in situ under local analgesia. The redundant distal unit was extracted and the residual mesial unit built up in composite resin following physiological mesial drift of displaced maxillary left canine. No endodontic therapy was required.

FOLLOW-UP

At a 10-month follow-up visit, clinical and radiographic vitality and success was noted.

CONCLUSION

The great amount of radiological information which Cone-beam CT can offer not only improves pre-operative and surgical planning, but the 3D models provided can be used to further educate and inform patients and guardians in the management of double teeth.

Effect of pre-heating on the viscosity and microhardness of a resin composite

The effect of pre-heating resin composite on pre-cured viscosity and post-cured surface hardness was evaluated. Groups of uncured specimens were heated to 60 degrees C and compared with control groups (24 degrees C) with respect to viscosity and surface hardness. Mean (SD) viscosities of the pre-heated specimens (n = 15) were in the range of 285 (13)-377 (11) (Pa) compared with 642 (35)-800 (23) (Pa) at ambient temperature. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.001). Mean (SD) Vickers microhardness (VHN) of the pre-heated group (n = 15) was 68.6 (2.3) for the top surface and 68.7 (1.8) for the bottom surface measured at 24 h post curing (specimen thickness = 1.5 mm). The corresponding values for the room temperature group were 60.6 (1.4) and 59.0 (3.5). There was a statistically significant difference between corresponding measurements taken at the top and bottom for the pre-heated and room temperature groups (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference between top and bottom measurements within each group. Pre-heating resin composite reduces its pre-cured viscosity and enhances its subsequent surface hardness. These effects may translate as easier placement together with an increased degree of polymerization and depth-of-cure.

Costs in providing facilities for treatment of handicapped patients under general anaesthesia

The cost of providing dental treatment for severely mentally/physically handicapped patients under general anaesthesia in a specially designed unit are investigated in this study. The costs involved in the provision of such treatment were found to be high at 613 IR Pounds per patient. It is recommended that the full potential of primary care services for handicapped patients be developed in order to reduce the use of these necessary, but expensive secondary care facilities. It is also recommended that such facilities should be shared with other services in order to reduce overall costs.

The association between lameness and fertility in dairy cows

One thousand, four hundred and ninety-one lactations in 770 Friesian, Holstein and Ayrshire crossbred cows have been used to study the associations between lameness and fertility. Lameness was associated with a longer interval between calving and first service and a longer interval between calving and conception. The largest increases in these intervals, of 17 and 30 days, respectively, occurred in cows with either sole or white line lesions occurring between 36 and 70 days after calving. The conception rate during the 63 days before a diagnosis of lameness was made was lower (31 per cent) than at other times (40 per cent).

Short-term associations between disease and milk yield of dairy cows

Short-term associations between disease and milk yield were studied in 1594 lactations occurring between 1977 and 1982 in 732 Friesian, Ayrshire and Holstein crossbred cows. Statistically significant differences in milk yield between one week before and one week after clinical diagnosis were observed for ketosis (5.1 kg/d), hypomagnesaemia (4.1 kg/d), mastitis occurring after peak yield (2.1 kg/d) and lameness (1.1 kg/d). Milk yield declined for as much as 2-4 weeks before diagnosis of disease, and total losses in milk yield associated with ketosis or hypomagnesaemia were estimated to be 60-70 kg. No significant differences were found for endometritis or for mastitis when it occurred before peak yield. Milk yield was suppressed for about 4 weeks after calvings with retained placenta, but there were no corresponding effects of dystocia or hypocalcaemia on milk yield. It is suggested that if automatic daily milk recording is available it may be possible to detect deviations from normal, and hence detect subclinical disease 2 or more weeks before its clinical appearance.

Use of COSREEL clinical codes in large animal veterinary practice

COSREEL, a computerised animal health recording system with a versatile coding system for recording diagnoses, symptoms and medical and surgical treatments, has been tested by veterinary surgeons in practice. The codes were found to be logical and generally easy to use. The application of these codes, with particular reference to their use in infertility investigations, is illustrated.

Use of COSREEL, a computerised recording system, for herd health management of two dairy herds

COSREEL, a computerised animal health recording system, has been used since October 1980 by two agricultural colleges for the management of their dairy herds. Each college and the veterinary practice which served the college has had its own typewriter terminal connected to a remote computer. Management and milk data have been coded and entered at the college and clinical data at the veterinary practice. An average of just over one management and veterinary event per week has been coded for every three cows in milk. Error rates were on average 11 per cent by one pair of users and 4 per cent by the other pair. COSREEL has provided a valuable aid to the management of the health of the two herds, and the regular use of pregnancy diagnosis, infertility investigation and oestrus detection action lists resulted in a considerable improvement in herd fertility at the two colleges.

Differentiation of canine coronavirus and porcine transmissible gastroenteritis virus by neutralization with canine, porcine and feline sera

Monospecific antisera were prepared in rabbits against canine coronavirus (CCV) and transmissible gastroenteritis virus of pigs (TGEV), and in 24 pigs and 3 cats against TGEV alone. Neutralizing antibody titres were higher for the immunizing than the heterologous virus, although cross-neutralization usually was detected. This confirmed that CCV and TGEV are distinct, but antigenically related coronaviruses. In sera from 41 dogs, CCV-neutralizing titres were on average 2.7 fold higher than TGEV-neutralizing titres, suggesting that CCV was the causal agent. Sera from 29 cats in colonies with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) and known to contain TGEV-neutralizing antibody, were found to have titres 12.3 fold higher against CCV. The FIP virus (FIPV) is probably more closely related to CCV than TGEV as judged by antigens involved in virus neutralization.

Antisera to two isolates of bovine coronavirus, three isolates of haemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus, seven strains of avian infectious bronchitis virus and the 229E strain of human coronavirus all failed to neutralize CCV and TGEV. Thus CCV, TGEV and probably FIPV fall into a group of antigenically related agents, separable from other members of the family Coronaviridae, by both virus neutralization and immunofluorescence tests.
