Intense THz Pulses with large ponderomotive potential generated from large aperture photoconductive antennas

We report the generation of free space terahertz (THz) pulses with energy up to 8.3 ± 0.2 µJ from an encapsulated interdigitated ZnSe Large Aperture Photo-Conductive Antenna (LAPCA). An aperture of 12.2 cm² is illuminated using a 400 nm pump laser with multi-mJ energies at 10 Hz repetition rate. The calculated THz peak electric field is 331 ± 4 kV/cm with a spectrum characterized by a median frequency of 0.28 THz. Given its relatively low frequency, this THz field will accelerate charged particles efficiently having very large ponderomotive energy of 15 ± 1 eV for electrons in vacuum. The scaling of the emission is studied with respect to the dimensions of the antenna, and it is observed that the capacitance of the LAPCA leads to a severe decrease in and distortion of the biasing voltage pulse, fundamentally limiting the maximum applied bias field and consequently the maximum energy of the radiated THz pulses. In order to demonstrate the advantages of this source in the strong field regime, an open-aperture Z-scan experiment was performed on n-doped InGaAs, which showed significant absorption bleaching.

Highly enhanced Raman scattering of graphene using plasmonic nano-structure

Highly enhanced Raman scattering of graphene on a plasmonic nano-structure platform is demonstrated. The plasmonic platform consists of silver nano-structures in a periodic array on top of a gold mirror. The gold mirror is used to move the hot spot to the top surface of the silver nano-structures, where the graphene is located. Two different nano-structures, ring and crescent, are studied. The actual Raman intensity is enhanced by a factor of 890 for the G-peak of graphene on crescents as compared to graphene on a silicon dioxide surface. The highest enhancement is observed for the G-peak as compared to the 2D-peak. The results are quantitatively well-matched with a theoretical model using an overlap integral of incident electric field intensities with the corresponding intensities of Raman signals at the G- and 2D-peaks. The interaction of light with nano-structures is simulated using finite element method (FEM).

Electrically switching transverse modes in high power THz quantum cascade lasers

The design and fabrication of a high power THz quantum cascade laser (QCL), with electrically controllable transverse mode is presented. The switching of the beam pattern results in dynamic beam switching using a symmetric side current injection scheme. The angular-resolved L-I curves measurements, near-field and far-field patterns and angular-resolved lasing spectra are presented. The measurement results confirm that the quasi-TM(01) transverse mode lases first and dominates the lasing operation at lower current injection, while the quasi-TM(00) mode lases at a higher threshold current density and becomes dominant at high current injection. The near-field and far-field measurements confirm that the lasing THz beam is maneuvered by 25 degrees in emission angle, when the current density changes from 1.9 kA/cm(2) to 2.3 kA/cm(2). A two-dimension (2D) current and mode calculation provides a simple model to explain the behavior of each mode under different bias conditions.

A study of coupling interactions in finite arbitrarily-shaped grooves in electromagnetic scattering problem

A study of coupling between finite number of general-shaped grooves in electromagnetic plane-wave scattering problem is presented. The formulation for a single groove [1] is extended to two grooves. The importance of inclusion of coupling interaction between two grooves in scattering analysis is presented and its dependence on the grooves separation distance and the angle of incident of the electromagnetic field is demonstrated quantitatively. For larger angle of incident and smaller separation distance between grooves indicate larger discrepancy between between simulation results with and without inclusion of the coupling effects. Although the results presented here considers two grooves, the formulation can be extended to arbitrary number of grooves.
