Abstract
The thriving solar-driven water evaporation (SDWE) technology is considered the ideal candidate for next-generation water treatment because of its high efficiency, environment-friendliness, and low cost. The irresistible trend of diversified energy demand presents multi-functional requirements for a successful SWDE. However, the current SDWE technology rarely breaks through this technical dilemma. Here, we have designed a bifunctional polypyrrole-based capacitor to achieve water purification and energy storage. The hydrophilicity of the filter paper and the high light absorptance of polypyrrole (96.18%) promote the generation of solar steam. The evaporation rate of the PPy-200 (Polypyrrole-200) filter paper reached 1.54 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 kW m-2. Interestingly, the symmetric supercapacitor assembled with PPy-based filter paper electrodes could simultaneously realize efficient evaporation (1.94 kg m-2 h-1) and electrochemical energy storage. As a single electrode, the PPy-200 filter paper exhibited ultra-high specific capacitance (4129.50 mF cm-2) and favorable cycling stability (71.16% after 4000 cycles). More importantly, the capacitance of PP-PPy-200 (Polyvinyl alcohol/Polyethylene glycol-Polypyrrole-200) increased to 2.55 times under one sun illumination. This work not only points out a direction for solar thermal utilization, but also provides new design inspiration for high-efficiency flexible electrochemical energy storage devices.

Abstract
Background The activation of melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) on melanocytes stimulates the production of eumelanin. A tridecapeptide α melanocyte‐stimulating hormone (αMSH) is known to induce skin pigmentation. Objectives We characterised the properties of a novel oral MC1R agonist dersimelagon (MT‐7117) with respect to its specific binding to MC1R, downstream signalling and eumelanin production in experimental models. Methods The competitive binding and production of intracellular cyclic adenosine 3′, 5′‐monophosphate in cells expressing recombinant melanocortin receptors were examined. A mouse melanoma cell line B16F1 was used for the evaluation of in vitro melanin production. The in vitro activity of MT‐7117 was determined with αMSH and [Nle4, D‐Phe7]‐αMSH (NDP‐αMSH) as reference comparators. The change of coat colour and skin pigmentation were evaluated after repeat administration of MT‐7117 by oral gavage to C57BL/6J‐Ay/+ mice and cynomolgus monkeys, respectively. Results MT‐7117 showed the highest affinity for human MC1R compared to the other melanocortin receptors evaluated and agonistic activity for human, cynomolgus monkey and mouse MC1R, with EC50 values in the nanomolar range. In B16F1 cells, MT‐7117 increased melanin production in a concentration‐dependent manner. In vivo, MT‐7117 (≥0.3 mg/kg/day p.o.) significantly induced coat colour darkening in mice. MT‐7117 (≥1 mg/kg/day p.o.) induced significant skin pigmentation in monkeys and complete reversibility was observed after cessation of its administration. Conclusions MT‐7117 is a novel oral MC1R agonist that induces melanogenesis in vitro and in vivo, suggesting its potential application for the prevention of phototoxic reactions in patients with photodermatoses, such as erythropoietic protoporphyria and X‐linked protoporphyria.

Abstract
Background:PD-1hi CXCR5- T peripheral helper (Tph) cells are newly identified pathogenic CD4+ helper T cells in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Since Tph cells have been emerged quite recently, the characteristics of Tph cells as a biomarker of RA are not fully understood.Objectives:The aim of the study is to evaluate how useful Tph cells in peripheral bloods are when compared to other immune cell subsets, and to clarify which Tph subset most accurately reflects the disease activity of RA.Methods:The RA patients who visited our rheumatology department between January 2000 and February 2017, and met the 2010 ACR/European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) classification criteria were included. We first assessed correlation with 40 immune cell subsets and the disease activity of RA. Next, the proportions of these immune cells were compared between RA and healthy controls (HCs). We also investigated the immune cell subsets which reflected the time course change of the disease activity after the methotrexate (MTX) treatment. The study protocol was approved by the ethics committee at Keio University School of Medicine.Results:Thirty-four seropositive RA, 12 seronegative RA and 34 HCs were included. The Immune cell subsets which showed correlation with DAS28-ESR (r> 0.2 or r> -0.2) were activated CD4 T cells (r= 0.31), HLA-DR+Th1 cells (r= 0.20), HLA-DR+Th1-17 cells (r= 0.25), Tfh1-17 cells (r= -0.25), HLA-DR+Tph cells (r= 0.22), CD3+CD8+naïve T cells (r= -0.25), CD3+CD8+effector memory T cells (r= -0.26), plasma cells (r= 0.40) and CD14++CD16+intermediate monocyte (r= 0.23). The proportions of HLA-DR+Th1 cells (2.3% vs. 5.7%), HLA-DR+Th1-17 cells (0.7% vs. 2.2%), Tfh1-17 cells (1.7% vs. 2.0%), HLA-DR+Tph cells (0.02% vs. 0.1%), CD3+CD8+effector memory T cells (16.6% vs 25.7%), plasma cells (0.04% vs. 0.17%) were statistically higher in the patients with RA compared to HCs. While the proportion of Tph cells showed weak correlation with DAS28-ESR (r= 0.18), that was extremely higher in RA (0.08% vs. 0.25%). Interestingly, when assessing the correlations with the disease activity in seropositive and seronegative RA separately, the proportions of Tph cells (r= 0.52) and HLA-DR+Tph cells (r= 0.50) were highly reflected in seropositive RA, but not in seronegative RA. Regarding the disease activity after the MTX treatment, the change of proportion of Tph cells between week 0 and 52 significantly reflected the change of DAS28-ESR (r= 0.75, p= 0.025), but not HLA-DR+Tph cells because of the non-specific reduction by the MTX treatment. Rather, HLA-DR-Tph cells significantly reflected the change of DAS28-ESR while receiving the MTX treatment (r= 0.76, p= 0.021).Conclusion:Tph cells and HLA-DR+Tph cells highly reflected the disease activity of seropositive RA. Abstract
Considerable efforts have been made to shift the phase transition temperature of metal-doped vanadium dioxide (VO2) films nearer the ambient temperature while maintain the excellent thermochromic properties simultaneously. Here, we describe a facile and economic solution-based method to fabricate W-doped VO2 (V(1-x)W(x)O2) thin films with excellent thermochromic properties for the application of smart windows. The substitutional doping of tungsten atoms notably reduces the phase transition temperature to the ambient temperature and retains the excellent thermochromic property. Furthermore, Ag nanowires (NWs) are employed as capping layers to effectively decrease the thermal emissivity from 0.833 to 0.603, while the original near infrared region (NIR) modulation ability is not severely affected. Besides, the Ag NWs layers further depress the phase transition temperature as well as the hysteresis loop width, which is important to the fenestration application. These solution-grown Ag NWs/V(1-x)W(x)O2 thin films exhibit excellent solar modulation ability, narrowed hysteresis loop width as well as low thermal emissivity, which provide a promising perspective into the practical application of VO2-based smart windows.

Abstract
Monoclinic VO2(M) in nanostructure is a prototype material for
interpreting correlation effects in solids with fully reversible phase transition
and for the advanced applications to smart devices. Here, we report a facile
one-step hydrothermal method for the controlled growth of single crystalline
VO2(M/R) nanorods. Through tuning the hydrothermal temperature,
duration of the hydrothermal time and W-doped level, single crystalline
VO2(M/R) nanorods with controlled aspect ratio can be synthesized in
large quantities, and the crucial parameter for the shape-controlled synthesis is
the W-doped content. The dopant greatly promotes the preferential growth of (110) to
form pure phase VO2(R) nanorods with high aspect ratio for the W-doped
level = 2.0 at% sample. The shape-controlled process of
VO2(M/R) nanorods upon W-doping are systematically studied. Moreover,
the phase transition temperature (Tc) of VO2 depending on
oxygen nonstoichiometry is investigated in detail.

A Facile Surfactant-Assisted Reflux Method for the Synthesis of Single-Crystalline Sb2Te3 Nanostructures with Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance. Abstract
Antimony telluride (Sb2Te3) and its based alloys are of importance to p-type semiconductors for thermoelectric applications near room temperature. Herein, we report a simple, low-energy intensive, and scalable surfactant-assisted reflux method for the synthesis of Sb2Te3 nanoparticles in the solvent ethylene glycol (EG) at low temperatures (120-180 °C). The formation mechanism of platelike Sb2Te3 nanoparticles is proposed. Also, it is found that the size, shape, and chemical composition of the products could be controlled by the introduction of organic surfactants (CTAB, PVP, etc.) or inorganic salts (EDTA-Na2, NaOH, etc.). Additionally, the collected Sb2Te3 nanoparticles were further fabricated into nanostructured pellets using cold-compaction and annealing techniques. Low resistivity [(7.37-19.4) × 10(-6) Ω m], moderate Seebeck coefficient (103-141 μV K(-1)), and high power factor (10-16 × 10(-4) W m(-1) K(-2)) have been achieved in our Sb2Te3-nanostructured bulk materials. The relatively low thermal conductivity (1.32-1.55 W m(-1) K(-1)) is attained in the nanobulk made of PVP-modified nanoparticles, and values of ZT in the range of 0.24-0.37 are realized at temperatures ranging from 50 to 200 °C. Our researches set forth a new avenue in promoting practical applications of Sb2Te3-based thermoelectric power generation or cooling devices.

Abstract
Polypropylene (PP) is a general-purpose plastic, but some applications are constrained by its high flammability. Thus, flame retardant PP is urgently demanded. In this article, intumescent flame retardant PP (IFRPP) composites with enhanced fire safety were prepared using 1-oxo-4-hydroxymethyl-2,6,7-trioxa-1-phosphabicyclo [2.2.2] octane (PEPA) functionalized graphene oxide (PGO) as synergist. The PGO was prepared through a mild chemical reaction by the covalent attachment of a caged-structure organic compound, PEPA, onto GO nanosheets using toluene diisocynate (TDI) as the intermediary agent. The novel PEPA-functionalized graphene oxide not only improves the heat resistance of GO but also converts GO and PEPA from hydrophobic to hydrophilic materials, which leads to even distribution in PP. In our case, 7 wt% addition of PGO as one of the fillers for IFRPP composites significantly reduces its inflammability and fire hazards when compared with PEPA, by the improvement of first release rate peak (PHRR), total heat release, first smoke release rate peak (PSRR) and total smoke release, suggesting its great potential as the IFR synergist in industry. The reason is mainly attributed to the barrier effect of the unburned graphene sheets, which protects by the decomposition products of PEPA and TDI, promotes the formation of graphitized carbon and inhibits the heat and gas release.

Abstract
Recently, researchers spare no efforts to fabricate desirable vanadium dioxide (VO2) film which provides simultaneously high luminous transmittance and outstanding solar modulation ability, yet progress towards the optimization of one aspect always comes at the expense of the other. Our research devotes to finding a reproducible economic solution-processed strategy for fabricating VO2-SiO2 composite films, with the aim of boosting the performance of both aspects. Compare to VO2 film, an improvement of 18.9% (from 29.6% to 48.5%) in the luminous transmittance as well as an increase of 6.0% (from 9.7% to 15.7%) in solar modulation efficiency is achieved when the molar ratio of Si/V attains 0.8. Based on the effective medium theory, we simulate the optical spectra of the composite films and the best thermochromic property is obtained when the filling factor attains 0.5, which is consistent with the experimental results. Meanwhile, the improvement of chemical stability for the composite film against oxidation has been confirmed. Tungsten is introduced to reduce the phase transition temperature to the ambient temperature, while maintain the thermochromism required for application as smart window. Our research set forth a new avenue in promoting practical applications of VO2-based thermochromic fenestration.

Abstract
Nanoporous silica cryogels with a high specific surface area of 1095 m2 g-1 were fabricated using tert-butyl alcohol as a reaction solvent, via a cost-effective sol-gel process followed by vacuum freeze drying. The total time of cryogel production was reduced markedly to one day. The molar ratio of solvent/precursor, which was varied from 5 to 13, significantly affected the porous structure and thermal insulating properties of the cryogels. The silica cryogels with low densities in the range of 0.08-0.18 g cm-3 and thermal conductivities as low as 6.7 mW (m·K)-1 at 100 Pa and 28.3 mW (m·K)-1 at 105 Pa were obtained using this new technique.

Abstract
Broadband near ultraviolet (NUV) random laser was achieved by Au nanoparticle loaded ZnO 3-D nanowalls. Au nanoparticle was loaded on ZnO 3-D nanowalls by photo-chemical deposition method using ionic liquid. The optical confinement by the 3-D nanowalls and enhancement of incident light scattering by Au nanoparticle increase the number of resonant modes, and thus leading to a broadband multiple spectrum random lasing. The results demonstrate an important step towards to expand the application scope of NUV laser on medical imaging of cells, solid-state lighting and optical sensor.

Abstract
Monovalent, bivalent and trivalent cations of Li+, Sn2+, Al3+, Fe3+ with different values of electronegativity were designed as doped-ions to prepare cations-intercalated titanate nanobelts through ex-situ ion-exchange reaction. XRD results revealed that the d200 values of layered TNBs decreased as the following sequence: Li-intercalated TNBs > Al-intercalated TNBs > Fe-intercalated TNBs > Sn-intercalated TNBs. The electronegativity differences between respective doped-cations and oxygen can well explain the trend of the reduction of d200 values for the synthesized layered nanobelts with different cations. The width change of nanobelts depending on intercalated cations showed similar tendency as that of d200 excluding Sn-intercalated case. That is mostly due to the crystallization of SnO2 nanoparticles on the nanobelts. Sn2+ is easily crystallized to form SnO2 nanoparticles on the surface of TNBs and being considered as unfavorable metal dopant for the present intercalation purpose. The reduction of d200 values of the doped TNBs from that of the undoped TNBs confirms the intercalation of the doped cations into layered structure. Such simple electronegativity-difference depending mechanism may be convenient for the designing of metal ion intercalation into octahedral TiO6 layered-oxide materials.

Abstract
Titanate nanotubes Na(2-x)H(x)Ti(3)O(7) produced by alkali hydrothermally treated ground TiO(2) aerogels are investigated as possible materials for high-temperature thermoelectric conversion by measuring their thermoelectric properties. Strikingly, the Seebeck coefficients increased sharply in the temperature range 745 to 1032 K, reaching a maximum of 302 muV/K. The electrical resistivity of the TNNTs ranged from 325 to 525 Omegam, which is lower than that of bulk TiO(2), and thermal conductivities at room temperature were also very low, ranging from 0.55 to 0.75 Wm(-1) K(-1). The hollow structure of the titanate nanotubes, with small, uniform diameters, is thought to be responsible for the ultralow thermal conductivity. The large thermoelectric power and ultralow thermal conductivity suggest that titanate nanotubes represent a new kind of p-type oxide thermoelectric material.

Abstract
The nanostructure of titanate nanotubes known as a one-dimensional catalytic/electric subject is combinatorially characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman, photoluminescence (PL) and advanced electron microscopy. The micro-Raman and PL spectra prove the successful synthesis of TiO6 octahedron units in macroscopic scale. Cryo-high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF)-STEM and aberration-corrected (AC) TEM visualize in real-space the TiO6 octahedron unit formed as a TiO2-based tubular structure prepared by the alkaline hydrothermal methods. The chirality and scrolling-up mechanism of the TiO6 octahedron nanosheets in relation to an asymmetrical chemical environment and mechanical tensions are discussed.

Abstract
The spectral complex optical constants in the visible and the near-infrared region of VO(2) and V(1-x)W(x)O(2) films deposited on glass substrates were determined from observed reflectance and transmittance spectra for which the least-squares method was used. In the metallic phase, the optical properties were characterized by the Drude model in wavelength regions longer than 750 nm.

Abstract
Tryptophan auxotroph trpo-28 is anomalous since preliminary mapping and suppression studies indicate the presence of a single amber nonsense mutation either late in trpE or early in trpD, but enzymological tests indicate the complete inactivation of both genes in this strain. Since the trpE and trpD genes are contiguous and encode the two subunits of a multifunctional enzyme complex, it was of interest to learn the mechanism of action of this apparent pleiotropic nonsense mutation. Our study has revealed that the phenotype of this strain derives not from a single mutation, but from the presenc and interaction of multiple mutations. Besides the recognized amber mutation (designated trpD28), this strain carries two additional, conditionally expressed missense mutations (designated trpE1651 and trpD1652). The trpD28 amber codon maps in the promoter-proximal region 1 of trpD and eliminates the glutamine amidotransferase activity of the bifunctional trpD polypeptide. The trpD1652 mutation maps in the promoter-distal region 2 of trpD and severely reduces (but does not eliminate) the phosphoribosyl transferase activity of the trpD polypeptide. The trpE1651 mutation maps in the anterior part of trpE and causes a rapid loss of activity of the trpE polypeptide, but only when it exists as an umcomplexed subunit. The existence of the two missense mutations escaped prior notice in standard recombinational tests since the nature of ech mutation is such that neither is detectable by the nutritional screens normally used in such tests unless an unsuppressed chain-terminating mutation, such as trpD28, is also present.

Abstract
Prototrophic revertants of a trpD deletion mutant that lacks the glutamine amidotransferase domain of the bifunctional component II subunit of the anthranilate synthetase-phosphoribosyltransferase complex have been found to arise by the occurrence of sublethal missense mutations in either the pheA or tyrA loci. Such suppressor mutations were obtained directly by mutation of the wild-type pheA gene as well as indirectly by partial reversion of a variety of nonleaky pheA and tyrA mutations. The suppressor strains have only a portion of the normal level of the pheA or tyrA enzyme activity and thus experience a partial limitation in the synthesis of phenylalanine or tyrosine. This limitation leads to a relaxation of end-product regulation of the phenylalanine- or tyrosine-specific enzymes of the common aromatic pathway and to the overproduction of the branch point intermediate, chorismic acid, which is one of the substrates of the anthranilate synthetase reaction. It is proposed that the high intracellular level of chorismic acid acts to elevate the non-physiological NH3-dependent anthranilate synthetase activity of the component I subunit, thereby eliminating the need for the glutamine amidotransferase activity of the component II subunit. Consistent with this is the finding that phenylalanine and tyrosine are specific inhibitors of growth of the pheA and tyrA suppressor strains, respectively, causing a shutdown of the overproduction of chorismic acid by reestablishing normal end-product control of the common pathway.

Abstract
Previous studies on histidinol dehydrogenase from His(+) revertants have shown that the frameshift mutation hisD3018 is a +1 type, resulting from inclusion of an extra cytidylate residue in messenger ribonucleic acid. Histidinol dehydrogenase from newly isolated spontaneous and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NG)-induced intragenic revertants has been examined for amino acid replacements. The results provide additional evidence that NG can delete guanine plus cytosine base pairs from deoxyribonucleic acid. One spontaneous revertant was found to result from a +2 addition of approximately 16 nucleotide residues before the +1 parent frameshift, and another by a -4 deletion about six residues before the same. Circumstantial evidence suggests the in vivo codon assignment GAG for glutamic acid. A region of histidinol dehydrogenase highly permissive of amino acid changes encoded in the minus (-) phase is now apparent.

Abstract
Prototrophic revertants of ICR-191A-induced frameshift mutant hisD3018 have been induced spontaneously by ICR-191A and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NG) treatment. In each case two genetically distinct prototroph classes were differentiated by transducibility into his deletion recipients: (i) transducible, generally fast-growing revertants within the hisD gene producing from 10 to 100% of normal amounts of histidinol dehydrogenase and (ii) nontransducible slow-growing prototrophs with very low levels of enzyme activity of which at least some arose by external suppression. These nontransducible revertants, whether arising spontaneously or in the presence of ICR-191A or NG, contain histidinol dehydrogenase which is electrophoretically similar to the wild-type enzyme.
