Abstract
Construction of population atlases is a key issue in medical image analysis, and particularly in brain mapping. Large sets of images are mapped into a common coordinate system to study intra-population variability and inter-population differences, to provide voxel-wise mapping of functional sites, and help tissue and object segmentation via registration of anatomical labels. Common techniques often include the choice of a template image, which inherently introduces a bias. This paper describes a new method for unbiased construction of atlases in the large deformation diffeomorphic setting. A child neuroimaging autism study serves as a driving application. There is lack of normative data that explains average brain shape and variability at this early stage of development. We present work in progress toward constructing an unbiased MRI atlas of 2 years of children and the building of a probabilistic atlas of anatomical structures, here the caudate nucleus. Further, we demonstrate the segmentation of new subjects via atlas mapping. Validation of the methodology is performed by comparing the deformed probabilistic atlas with existing manual segmentations.

Abstract
One third of the Indian babies are of low birth weight (<2.5 kg), and this is attributed to maternal undernutrition. We therefore examined the relationship between maternal nutrition and birth size in a prospective study of 797 rural Indian women, focusing on macronutrient intakes, dietary quality and micronutrient status. Maternal intakes (24-h recall and food frequency questionnaire) and erythrocyte folate, serum ferritin and vitamin C concentrations were measured at 18 +/- 2 and 28 +/- 2 wk gestation. Mothers were short (151.9 +/- 5.1 cm) and underweight (41.7 +/- 5.1 kg) and had low energy and protein intakes at 18 wk (7.4 +/- 2.1 MJ and 45.4 +/- 14.1 g) and 28 wk (7.0 +/- 2.0 MJ and 43.5 +/- 13.5 g) of gestation. Mean birth weight and length of term babies were also low (2665 +/- 358 g and 47.8 +/- 2.0 cm, respectively). Energy and protein intakes were not associated with birth size, but higher fat intake at wk 18 was associated with neonatal length (P < 0.001), birth weight (P < 0.05) and triceps skinfold thickness (P < 0.05) when adjusted for sex, parity and gestation. However, birth size was strongly associated with the consumption of milk at wk 18 (P < 0.05) and of green leafy vegetables (P < 0.001) and fruits (P < 0.01) at wk 28 of gestation even after adjustment for potentially confounding variables. Erythrocyte folate at 28 wk gestation was positively associated with birth weight (P < 0.001). The lack of association between size at birth and maternal energy and protein intake but strong associations with folate status and with intakes of foods rich in micronutrients suggest that micronutrients may be important limiting factors for fetal growth in this undernourished community.

Abstract
Theories of the pathophysiology of schizophrenia have implicated the hippocampus, but controversy remains regarding hippocampal abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia. In vivo studies of hippocampal anatomy using high resolution magnetic resonance scanning and manual methods for volumetric measurement have yielded inconclusive results, perhaps because of the normal variability in hippocampal volume and the error involved in manual measurement techniques. To resolve this controversy, high dimensional transformations of a computerized brain template were used to compare hippocampal volumes and shape characteristics in 15 matched pairs of schizophrenia and control subjects. The transformations were derived from principles of general pattern matching and were constrained according to the physical properties of fluids. The analysis and comparison of hippocampal shapes based on these transformations were far superior to the comparison of hippocampal volumes or other global indices of hippocampal anatomy in showing a statistically significant difference between the two groups. In the schizophrenia subjects, hippocampal shape deformations were found to be localized to subregions of the structure that send projections to prefrontal cortex. The results of this study demonstrate that abnormalities of hippocampal anatomy occur in schizophrenia and support current hypotheses that schizophrenia involves a disturbance of hippocampal-prefrontal connections. These results also show that comparisons of neuroanatomical shapes can be more informative than volume comparisons for identifying individuals with neuropsychiatric diseases, such as schizophrenia.

Abstract
The human cerebral cortex is notorious for the depth and irregularity of its convolutions and for its variability from one individual to the next. These complexities of cortical geography have been a chronic impediment to studies of functional specialization in the cortex. In this report, we discuss ways to compensate for the convolutions by using a combination of strategies whose common denominator involves explicit reconstructions of the cortical surface. Surface-based visualization involves reconstructing cortical surfaces and displaying them, along with associated experimental data, in various complementary formats (including three-dimensional native configurations, two-dimensional slices, extensively smoothed surfaces, ellipsoidal representations, and cortical flat maps). Generating these representations for the cortex of the Visible Man leads to a surface-based atlas that has important advantages over conventional stereotaxic atlases as a substrate for displaying and analyzing large amounts of experimental data. We illustrate this by showing the relationship between functionally specialized regions and topographically organized areas in human visual cortex. Surface-based warping allows data to be mapped from individual hemispheres to a surface-based atlas while respecting surface topology, improving registration of identifiable landmarks, and minimizing unwanted distortions. Surface-based warping also can aid in comparisons between species, which we illustrate by warping a macaque flat map to match the shape of a human flat map. Collectively, these approaches will allow more refined analyses of commonalities as well as individual differences in the functional organization of primate cerebral cortex.

Abstract
The Dissociative Experiences Scale was administered to a random sample of 1,055 adults in the city of Winnipeg. Results showed that scale scores did not differ between men and women and were not influenced by income, employment status, education, place of birth, religious affiliation, or number of persons in the respondent's household. Dissociative experiences are common in the general population and decline with age. The findings suggest that dissociative disorders may also be common in the general population.

Abstract
PURPOSE To test automated three-dimensional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging morphometry of the human hippocampus, to determine the potential gain in precision compared with conventional manual morphometry. MATERIAL AND METHODS A canonical three-dimensional MR image atlas was used as a deformable template and automatically matched to three-dimensional MR images of 10 individuals (five healthy and five schizophrenic subjects). A subvolume containing the hippocampus was defined by using 16 landmarks that constrained the automated search for hippocampal boundaries. Transformation of the hippocampus template was automatically performed by using global pattern matching through a sequence of low-then high-dimensional translations, rotations, and scalings. RESULTS The average test-retest volume difference measured with the automatic method was 3.1%, compared with the manual test-retest difference of 7.1%. Correlation between automated and manually determined volumes demonstrated the validity of the automated technique (intraclass correlation coefficient = .86). CONCLUSION The automated method estimates hippocampal volumes with less variability (ie, lower variance) than that of manual out-lining.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to define the influence of feeding mean arterial pressure (FMAP) in conjunction with other morphological or clinical risk factors in determining the probability of hemorrhagic presentation in patients with cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). METHODS Clinical and angiographic data from 340 patients with cerebral AVMs from a prospective database were reviewed. Patients were identified in whom FMAP was measured during superselective angiography. Additional variables analyzed included AVM size, location, nidus border, presence of aneurysms, and arterial supply and venous drainage patterns. The presence of arterial aneurysms was also correlated with site of bleeding on imaging studies. RESULTS By univariate analysis, exclusively deep venous drainage, periventricular venous drainage, posterior fossa location, and FMAP predicted hemorrhagic presentation. When we used stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis in the cohort that had FMAP measurements (n = 129), only exclusively deep venous drainage (odds ratio [OR], 3.7; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.4 to 9.8) and FMAP (OR, 1.4 per 10 mm Hg increase; 95% CI, 1.1 to 1.8) were independent predictors (P < 0.01) of hemorrhagic presentation; size, location, and the presence of aneurysms were not independent predictors. There was also no association (P = 0.23) between the presence of arterial aneurysms and subarachnoid hemorrhage. CONCLUSIONS High arterial input pressure (FMAP) and venous outflow restriction (exclusively deep venous drainage) were the most powerful risk predictors for hemorrhagic AVM presentation. Our findings suggest that high intranidal pressure is more important than factors such as size, location, and the presence of arterial aneurysms in the pathophysiology of AVM hemorrhage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the feasibility of using high-dimensional brain mapping (HDBM) to assess the structure of the hippocampus in older human subjects, and to compare measurements of hippocampal volume and shape in subjects with early dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT) and in healthy elderly and younger control subjects. BACKGROUND HDBM represents the typical structures of the brain via the construction of templates and addresses their variability by probabilistic transformations applied to the templates. Local application of the transformations throughout the brain (i.e., high dimensionality) makes HDBM especially valuable for defining subtle deformities in brain structures such as the hippocampus. METHODS MR scans were obtained in 18 subjects with very mild DAT, 18 healthy elderly subjects, and 15 healthy younger subjects. HDBM was used to obtain estimates of left and right hippocampal volume and eigenvectors that represented the principal dimensions of hippocampal shape differences among the subject groups. RESULTS Hippocampal volume loss and shape deformities observed in subjects with DAT distinguished them from both elderly and younger control subjects. The pattern of hippocampal deformities in subjects with DAT was largely symmetric and suggested damage to the CA1 hippocampal subfield. Hippocampal shape changes were also observed in healthy elderly subjects, which distinguished them from healthy younger subjects. These shape changes occurred in a pattern distinct from the pattern seen in DAT and were not associated with substantial volume loss. CONCLUSIONS Assessments of hippocampal volume and shape derived from HDBM may be useful in distinguishing early DAT from healthy aging.

Abstract
The effect of deimination of arginyl residues in bovine myelin basic protein (MBP) on its susceptibility to digestion by cathepsin D has been studied. Using bovine component 1 (C-1) of MBP, the most unmodified of the components with all 18 arginyl residues intact, we have generated a number of citrullinated forms by treatment of the protein with purified peptidylarginine deiminase (PAD) in vitro. We obtained species containing 0-9.9 mol of citrulline/mol of MBP. These various species were digested with cathepsin D, a metalloproteinase which cleaves proteins at Phe-Phe linkages. The rate of digestion compared to component 1 was only slightly affected when 2.7 or 3.8 mol of citrulline/mol of MBP was present. With 7.0 mol of citrulline/mol of MBP, a large increase in the rate of digestion occurred. No further increase was observed with 9.9 mol of citrulline/mol of MBP. The immunodominant peptide 43-88 (bovine sequence) was released slowly when 2.7 and 3.8 mol of citrulline/mol of MBP was present, but it was released rapidly when 7.0 mol of citrulline/mol of MBP was present. The dramatic change in digestion with 7.0 mol of citrulline/mol of MBP or more could be explained by a change in three-dimensional structure. Molecular dynamics simulation showed that increasing the number of citrullinyl residues above 7 mol/mol of MBP generated a more open structure, consistent with experimental observations in the literature. We conclude that PAD, which deiminates arginyl residues in proteins, decreases both the charge and compact structure of MBP. This structural change allows better access of the Phe-Phe linkages to cathepsin D. This scheme represents an effective way of generating the immunodominant peptide which sensitizes T-cells for the autoimmune response in demyelinating disease.

Abstract
Toward gene therapy for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infections in AIDS, Moloney murine leukemia virus-derived retroviral vectors were engineered to allow constitutive and tat-inducible expression of an HIV-1 5' leader sequence-specific ribozyme (Rz1). These vectors were used to infect the human CD4+ lymphocyte-derived MT4 cell line. The stable MT4 transformants expressing an HIV-1 RNA-specific ribozyme, under the control of the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (tk) promoter, were found to be somewhat resistant to HIV-1 infection as virus production was delayed. In cells allowing ribozyme expression under control of the simian virus 40 or cytomegalovirus promoter, the rate of HIV-1 multiplication was slightly decreased, and virus production was delayed by about 14 days. The highest level of resistance to HIV-1 infection was observed in MT4 cells transformed with a vector containing a fusion tk-TAR (trans activation-responsive) promoter to allow ribozyme expression in a constitutive and tat-inducible manner; no HIV-1 production was observed 22 days after infection of these cells. These results indicate that retroviral vectors expressing HIV-1 RNA-specific ribozymes can be used to confer resistance to HIV-1 infection.

Abstract
NDM-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae strains represent major clinical and infection control challenges, particularly in resource-limited settings with high rates of antimicrobial resistance. Determining whether transmission occurs at a gene, plasmid, or bacterial strain level and within hospital and/or the community has implications for monitoring and controlling spread. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is the highest-resolution typing method available for transmission epidemiology. We sequenced carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae isolates from 26 individuals involved in several infection case clusters in a Nepali neonatal unit and 68 other clinical Gram-negative isolates from a similar time frame, using Illumina and PacBio technologies. Within-outbreak chromosomal and closed-plasmid structures were generated and used as data set-specific references. Three temporally separated case clusters were caused by a single NDM K. pneumoniae strain with a conserved set of four plasmids, one being a 304,526-bp plasmid carrying bla(NDM-1). The plasmids contained a large number of antimicrobial/heavy metal resistance and plasmid maintenance genes, which may have explained their persistence. No obvious environmental/human reservoir was found. There was no evidence of transmission of outbreak plasmids to other Gram-negative clinical isolates, although bla(NDM) variants were present in other isolates in different genetic contexts. WGS can effectively define complex antimicrobial resistance epidemiology. Wider sampling frames are required to contextualize outbreaks. Infection control may be effective in terminating outbreaks caused by particular strains, even in areas with widespread resistance, although this study could not demonstrate evidence supporting specific interventions. Larger, detailed studies are needed to characterize resistance genes, vectors, and host strains involved in disease, to enable effective intervention.

Abstract
We describe a novel, biotin-responsive basal ganglia disease in 10 patients. At onset, it appears as a subacute encephalopathy, with confusion, dysarthria and dysphagia with occasional supranuclear facial nerve palsy or external ophthalmoplegia, and progresses to severe cogwheel rigidity, dystonia and quadriparesis. These symptoms disappear within a few days if biotin (5-10 mg/kg/day) is administered, and there are no neurological sequelae. They reappear within 1 month if biotin is discontinued. Patients diagnosed late, or who have had repeated episodes, suffer from residual symptoms such as paraparesis, mild mental retardation or dystonia. The numerous biochemical studies of intermediary metabolism, like the autoimmune and toxicological studies, enzyme assays including biotinidase, carboxylase and lysosomal activities, and bacterial and viral studies were all normal. The aetiology may be related to a defect in the transporter of biotin across the blood-brain barrier. The only consistent radiological abnormality was central necrosis of the head of the caudate bilaterally and complete, or partial, involvement of the putamen on brain MRI. This was present during the initial acute encephalopathy and remained unchanged during follow-up of 3-10 years. Although its aetiology is unknown, it is important to recognize this disease, since its symptoms may be reversed and the progression of its clinical course prevented simply by providing biotin.

Abstract
Within the past few years, lectins have become a well-established means for understanding varied aspects of cancer and metastasis. Evidence is now emerging that lectins are dynamic contributors to tumor cell recognition (surface markers), cell adhesion and localization, signal transduction across membranes, mitogenic stimulation, augmentation of host immune defense, cytotoxicity, and apoptosis. To advance understanding of these lectin-dependent processes, attempts are being made to discover new lectins that have one or more of these functions and to develop lectin- (or glycoconjugate-) based tools that could be used to home in on tumor cells. This review will summarize current research on the lectins and recent advances in the development of lectin-based diagnostic and therapeutic tools for cancer. Additionally, the future potential of lectin-based diagnosis and therapy is discussed.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of crocin, a pharmacologically active constituent of Crocus sativus L., in isoproterenol (ISO)-induced cardiotoxicity with reference to hemodynamic, antioxidant, histopathological and ultrastructural parameters. Rats were administered crocin (5, 10 and 20mg/kg/day) or vehicle orally for 21 days along with ISO (85mg/kg, subcutaneously, at 24h interval) on 20th and 21st day. On 22nd day ISO-control rats showed cardiac dysfunction as indicated by lowering of systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressures. In addition, a significant decrease in maximum positive and negative rate of developed left ventricular pressure (+/-LVdp/dt(max)) and an increase in left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) were observed. Furthermore, a marked reduction in the activities of myocardial creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) isoenzyme, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels along with an increase in content of malondialdehyde (MDA) were observed. Myocardial necrosis, edema and inflammation were evident from the light microscopic and ultrastructural changes. Crocin at the dose of 20mg/kg/day significantly modulated hemodynamic and antioxidant derangements. The preventive role of crocin on ISO-induced MI was reconfirmed by histopathological and ultrastructural examinations. The effect at the dose of 20mg/kg/day of crocin was more pronounced than that of other two doses (5 and 10mg/kg/day). The results suggest that crocin may have cardioprotective effect in ISO-induced cardiac toxicity through modulation of oxidative stress in such a way that maintains the redox status of the cell.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Human cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are speculated to result from abnormal angiogenesis. Vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGF-Rs) and Tie-2 play critical roles in vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. We hypothesized that the abnormal vascular phenotype of AVMs may be associated with abnormal expression of VEGF-Rs and Tie-2. METHODS We measured the expression of Tie-2, VEGF-R1, and VEGF-R2 in AVMs and normal brain tissue, using immunoblotting. To assess active vascular remodeling, we also measured endothelial nitric oxide synthase expression. CD31 expression was used to control for endothelial cell mass for Tie-2, VEGF-Rs, and endothelial nitric oxide synthase. Immunoblotting data were presented as relative expression, using normal brain tissue values as 100%. RESULTS CD31 was expressed to similar degrees in AVMs and normal brain tissue (99+/-29% versus 100+/-20%, mean +/- standard error, P = 0.98). Tie-2 expression was markedly decreased in all AVMs, compared with normal brain tissue (16+/-9% versus 100+/-37%, P = 0.04). VEGF-R1 expression was decreased in four of five AVMs, but the difference between the mean values was not significant (35+/-8% versus 100+/-42%, P = 0.14). VEGF-R2 expression was decreased in all AVMs, compared with normal brain tissue (28+/-6% versus 100+/-29%, P = 0.03). There was no difference in endothelial nitric oxide synthase expression between AVMs and normal brain tissue (106+/-42% versus 100+/-25%, P = 0.91). CONCLUSION AVM vessels exhibited abnormal expression of Tie-2 and VEGF-Rs, both of which may contribute to the pathogenesis of AVMs.

Abstract
This paper reviews recent developments by the Washington/Brown groups for the study of anatomical shape in the emerging new discipline of computational anatomy. Parametric representations of anatomical variation for computational anatomy are reviewed, restricted to the assumption of small deformations. The generation of covariance operators for probabilistic measures of anatomical variation on coordinatized submanifolds is formulated as an empirical procedure. Populations of brains are mapped to common coordinate systems, from which template coordinate systems are constructed which are closest to the population of anatomies in a minimum distance sense. Variation of several one-, two- and three-dimensional manifolds, i.e. sulci, surfaces and brain volumes are examined via Gaussian measures with mean and covariances estimated directly from maps of templates to targets. Methods are presented for estimating the covariances of vector fields from a family of empirically generated maps, posed as generalized spectrum estimation indexed over the submanifolds. Covariance estimation is made parametric, analogous to autoregressive modelling, by introducing small deformation linear operators for constraining the spectrum of the fields.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the estrogenicity of genistein in the neonatal and adult male mouse reproductive tract. In intact adults, genistein (2.5 mg s.c./kg of body weight/day for 9 days) reduced testicular and serum testosterone concentrations, pituitary LH-content and prostate weight. In castrated adults, genistein (0.025-2.5 mg s.c./kg of body weight) increased expression of c-fos gene in prostatic urethra. In adult, neonatally estrogenized mice showing an increased estrogen sensitivity, a 10-day treatment with genistein (2.5 mg s.c./kg of body weight) induced development of squamous epithelial metaplasia in prostatic collecting ducts. Neonatally, only a very high dose of genistein (1 mg/pup per day; i.e. approximately 500 mg/kg of body weight) induced persistent structural changes, similar to those seen in mice treated neonatally with diethylstilbestrol, in the urethroprostatic complex. These results suggest that in adult males, genistein induces the typical estrogenic effects in doses comparable to those present in soy-based diets, while in neonatal animals, considerably higher doses are required to show estrogen-like activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reliable tests of correct anatomic placement of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) may enhance safety during use and minimize the need for fiberoptic instrumentation during airway manipulation through the device. This study assessed the correlation between the outcomes of nine clinical tests to place the LMA and the anatomic position of the device as graded on a standard fiberoptic scale. METHODS During 150 anesthetics, the outcome of nine clinical tests of correct placement was individually scored as satisfactory (positive) or unsatisfactory (negative) for clinical use of the LMA. Anatomic placement was assessed (by fiberoptic evaluation) by an anesthesiologist, who was blinded to the placement of the device, as grade 1, vocal cords not seen; grade 2, cords plus the anterior epiglottis seen; grade 3, cords plus the posterior epiglottis seen; and grade 4, only vocal cords seen. The outcomes of clinical tests were correlated with fiberoptic grade. RESULTS Tests that correlated with the fiberoptic grade were the ability to generate an airway pressure of 20 cm water, the ability to ventilate manually, a black line on the LMA in midline, anterior movement of the larynx, outward movement of the LMA on inflation of the cuff, and movements of the reservoir bag with spontaneous breathing. Two tests, ability to generate airway pressure of 20 cm water and ability to ventilate manually, correlated with fiberoptic grades 4 and 3 combined (i.e., the epiglottis was supported by the LMA) and grade 2 (the epiglottis was not supported by the LMA). Tests with poor correlation with fiberoptic grade were the presence of resistance at the end of insertion, inability to advance LMA after inflation of the cuff, and presence of a capnographic trace. CONCLUSIONS The outcome of clinical tests correlates with the anatomic placement of LMAs, as judged by fiberoptic examination. Two tests that best correlated with the fiberoptic grade were the ability to generate airway pressure of 20 cm water and the ability to ventilate manually.

Abstract
The Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule was administered to a random sample of 502 adults in the general population of Winnipeg, a midwestern Canadian city. Results showed that paranormal/extrasensory experiences were common in the general population. They were linked to a history of childhood trauma and to other dissociative symptom clusters. A factor analysis of the paranormal experiences identified three factors which together accounted for 44.0% of the combined variance of the scores. A model is proposed in which paranormal experiences are conceptualized as an aspect of normal dissociation. Like dissociation in general, paranormal experiences can be triggered by trauma, especially childhood physical or sexual abuse. Such experiences discriminate individuals with childhood trauma histories from those without at high levels of significance.

Abstract
We used the setting of clinically indicated internal carotid artery balloon test occlusions in 44 patients with inoperable carotid cavernous aneurysms or head and neck tumours to examine real-time changes in higher cerebral function that correlate with specific levels of cerebral blood flow. By making detailed haemodynamic and neurobehavioural measurements during the 30 min the carotid artery was occluded, we were able to quantify higher cerebral function patterns in relation to absolute cerebral blood flow (CBF) levels. We found that once the carotid artery was occluded, patients whose CBF averaged 47 ml/100 g/min (no different from baseline) maintained consistent performance on a sustained attention task; those whose CBF dropped to an average 37 ml/100 g/min had a reversible deterioration of sustained attention, and those whose CBF fell to 27 ml/100 g/min had impaired sustained attention that persisted until the carotid occlusion was reversed. The relevance of these results to the pathological state of clinical stroke is discussed with respect to the haemodynamic and physiological mechanisms that may determine how brain function is lost and regained in the setting of acute cerebral hypoperfusion.

Abstract
In five patients with mesial temporal sclerosis, the authors verified the precision and reproducibility of hippocampal segmentations with deformation-based magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The overall percentage overlap between automated segmentations was 92.8% (SD, 3.5%), between manual segmentations was 73.1% (SD, 9.5%), and between automated and manual segmentations was 74.8% (SD, 10.3%). Deformation-based hippocampal segmentations provided a precise method of hippocampal volume measurement in this patient population.

Abstract
Myocardial infarction (MI) was produced in rats with 85, 200 and 300 mg/kg of isoproterenol (ISO) administered subcutaneously (sc) twice at an interval of 24 h. Shift in antioxidant parameters, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) together with morphological and histopathological changes were investigated. Two hundred mg/kg ISO dose was selected for the present study as this dose offered significant alteration in biochemical parameters along with moderate necrosis in heart. Effect of pre- and co-treatment of hydroalcoholic extract of Ocimum sanctum (Os) at different doses (25, 50, 75, 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg) was investigated against ISO (200 mg/kg) induced myocardial infarction in rats. Modulation of various biochemical parameters and membrane integrity was studied. Os at the dose of 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg/kg reduced significantly glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and LDH levels. It also inhibited the lipid peroxidation as observed by the reduced thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels. In the present study Os at the dose of 50 mg/kg was found to demonstrate maximum cardioprotective effect. Above results were further confirmed by histopathological findings. Thus from the present study it is concluded that Os may be of therapeutic and prophylactic value in the treatment of MI.

Abstract
Bromo- and cucumovirus RNAs contain a tRNA-like structure as an integral part of their genome. This structure is located at the 3' end of the viral RNA and is an acceptor of tyrosine. The 3' regions of representative viral RNAs have been sequenced and quite unorthodox secondary foldings have been proposed for these 3' ends. The question therefore remained as to how these structures could be recognized by tRNA-specific enzymes. We have established the minimum number of nucleotides from the 3' end of the brome mosaic virus and broad bean mottle virus RNAs required for the formation of structures recognized by the tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase and/or the tRNA nucleotidyltransferase. The results obtained delineate the length of the tRNA-like region, and indicate that the 5' region of the tRNA-like structure participates in the formation of the amino acid stem. This has led us to propose an 'L'-shaped secondary structure for these tRNA-like regions.

Abstract
Donation after circulatory death (DCD) liver transplantation (LT) reportedly yields inferior survival and increased complication rates compared with donation after brain death (DBD). We compare 100 consecutive DCD LT using a protocol that includes thrombolytic therapy (late DCD group) to an historical DCD group (early DCD group n = 38) and a cohort of DBD LT recipients (DBD group n = 435). Late DCD LT recipients had better 1- and 3-year graft survival rates than early DCD LT recipients (92% vs. 76.3%, p = 0.03 and 91.4% vs. 73.7%, p = 0.01). Late DCD graft survival rates were comparable to those of the DBD group (92% vs. 93.3%, p = 0.24 and 91.4% vs. 88.2%, p = 0.62). Re-transplantation occurred in 18.4% versus 1% for the early and late DCD groups, respectively (p = 0.001). Patient survival was similar in all three groups. Ischemic-type biliary lesions (ITBL) occurred in 5%, 3%, and 0.2% for early DCD, late DCD, and DBD groups, respectively, but unlike in the early DCD group, in the late DCD group ITBL was endoscopically managed and resolved in each case. Using a protocol that includes a thrombolytic therapy, DCD LT yielded patient and graft survival rates comparable to DBD LT.
